• How to use integrated Intel graphics instead of Nvidia graphics on MacBook Pro?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on MacBook Pro 15" 2010 (MacBookPro6,2) and I would like to use the integrated Intel graphics instead of the dedicated Nvidia graphics Ubuntu boots with on this machine. I am booting with UEFI, not REFIT or similar. I managed to switch to UEFI with the help of this page. This wiki page also contains tips on switching to Intel graphics which include some (for me) cryptic boot commands to grub. However if I follow the guide, my display stays just black. Currently, I am only looking for solution to use Intel graphics for Ubuntu to save power and keep my MacBook cool. Dynamic switching or stuff like that is not required.

• Rob Blackwell on interoperability and Azure

  At QCon in March we had a sample Azure application implemented in both Java and Ruby to demonstrate that the Windows Azure Platform is not just about .NET. The following is an interesting interview with Rob Blackwell, the R&D director of the partner who implemented the application. UK Interoperability Team Interviews Rob Blackwell, R&D Director at Active Web Solutions. Is Microsoft taking interoperability seriously? Yes. In the past, I think Microsoft has, quite rightly come in for criticism, but architects and developers should look at this again. The Interoperability Bridges site (http://www.interoperabilitybridges.com/ ) shows a wide range of projects that allow interoperability from Java, Ruby and PHP for example. The Windows Azure platform has been architected with interoperable APIs in mind. It's straightforward to access the various storage facilities from just about any language or platform. Azure compute is capable of running more than just C# applications! Why is interoperability important to you? My company provides consultancy and bespoke development services. We're a Microsoft Gold Partner, but we live in the real world where companies have a mix of technologies provided by a variety of vendors. When developing an enterprise software solution, you rarely have a completely blank canvas. We often see integration scenarios where we need to exchange data with legacy systems. It's not unusual to see modern Silverlight applications being built on top of Java or Mainframe based back ends. Could you give us some examples of where interoperability has been important for your projects? We developed an innovative Sea Safety system for the RNLI Lifeboats here in the UK. Commercial Fishing is one of the most dangerous professions and we helped developed the MOB Guardian System which uses satellite technology and man overboard devices to raise the alarm when a fisherman gets into trouble. The solution is implemented in .NET running on Windows, but without interoperable standards, it would have been impossible to communicate with the satellite gateway technology. We built the site using Java and Restlet and hosted it in Windows Azure Compute. The site accepts feedback from visitors and all the data is stored in Windows Azure Storage. We also ported the application to Ruby on Rails for demonstration purposes. Visitors to the stand were surprised that this was even possible. Why should Java developers be interested in Windows Azure? Windows Azure Storage consists of Blobs, Queues and Tables. The storage is scalable, durable, secure and cost-effective. Using the WindowsAzure4j library, it's easy to use, and takes just a few lines of code. If you are writing an application with large data storage requirements, or you want an offsite backup, it makes a lot of sense. Running Java applications in Azure Compute is straightforward with tools like the Tomcat Solution Accelerator (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/winazuretomcat )and AzureRunMe (http://azurerunme.codeplex.com/ ). The Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus can also be used to connect heterogeneous systems running on different networks and in different data centres. How can The Service Bus be considered an interoperability solution? I think that the Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus is one of Microsoft’s best kept secrets. Think of it as “a globally scalable application plumbing kit in the sky”. If you have used Enterprise Service Buses before, you’ll be familiar with the concept. Applications can connect to the service bus to securely exchange data – these can be point to point or multicast links. With the AppFabric Service Bus, the applications can exist anywhere that has access to the Internet and the connections can traverse firewalls. This makes it easy to extend or scale your application or reach out to other networks and technologies. For example, let’s say you have a SQL Server database running on premises and you want to expose the data to a Java application running in the cloud. You could set up a point to point Service Bus connection and use JDBC. Traditionally this would have been difficult or impossible without punching holes in firewalls and compromising security. • Can't add repository due to 'missing' fingerprint

  I am trying to install nginx with php but when I am following a guide, like this one: http://www.justincarmony.com/blog/2011/10/24/setting-up-nginx-php-fpm-on-ubuntu-10-04/ I am always told to add that repository (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:brianmercer/php) but I can't. I'll just get "Error: can't find signing_key_fingerprint at https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~nginx/+archive/php5" and when I go to that website I find that there is a fingerprint specified but still I get that error message. Is there anyway to specify it myself? And for the last thing, how I can fix this so I can continue my installation towards a working nginx enviroment with php. Thanks for your advice and better wisdom.

But for over 2 months prior to that I had to keep it a secret. It was so tough; I didn't even tell my family when they asked me what I was working on. Anyway, OHDF is an enterprise healthcare data model. Unlike Healthcare Transaction Base, OHDF is in 3rd normal form. It is logical and reasonably easy to understand for anyone with some experience in the healthcare domain. OHDF is emerging as the core of Oracle's healthcare business intelligence applications.

• Look Inside WebLogic Server Embedded LDAP with an LDAP Explorer

  Today a question came up on our internal WebLogic Server mailing lists about an issue deleting a Group from WebLogic Server.  The group had a special character in the name. The WLS console refused to delete the group with the message a java.net.MalformedURLException and another message saying “Errors must be corrected before proceeding.” as shown below. The group aa:bb is the one with the issue.  Click to enlarge. WebLogic Server includes an embedded LDAP server that can be used for managing users and groups for “reasonably small environments (10,000 or fewer users)”.  For organizations scaling larger or using more high-end features, I recommend looking at one of Oracle’s very popular enterprise directory services products like Oracle Internet Directory or Oracle Directory Server Enterprise Edition.  You can configure multiple authenicators in WebLogic Server so that you can use multiple directories at the same time. Follow the instructions here, being sure to change the authentication credentials to the Embedded LDAP server to some value you know, as by default they are some unknown value.  You’ll need to reboot the WebLogic Server Admin Server after making this change. Now configure JXplorer to connect as described in the documentation.  I’ve circled the important inputs.  In this example, my domain name is “hotspot_domain” which listens on the localhost listen address and port 7001.  The cn=Admin user name is a constant identifier for the Administrator of the embedded LDAP and that does not change, but you need to know what it is so you can enter it into the tool you use. Once you connect successfully, you can explore the entries and in this case delete the group that is no longer desired.

  As announced by Jason Zender in his blog post, Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 is available for download for MSDN subscribers since March 8 and is available to the general public since March 10. Brian Harry provides information related to TFS and S. "Soma" Somasegar provides information on the latest Visual Studio 2010 enhancements. With this service pack for Visual Studio an update to the .NET Framework 4.0 is also released. Canceling the installation didn’t work and I had to kill the setup.exe process. When reapplying it again, rollbacks were reported, so I reapplied it again – this time with succes.

Juric has worked on performance analysis and optimization of RMI-IIOP, as well as being a member of the BPEL Advisory Board, and a Java mentor and trainer.Regarding BPEL he remarks, "Probably the most important thing to understand is what should be programmed in Java and what should be programmed in BPEL. There is still some confusion. BPEL is for the process logic, while Java is for functionalities. Together, BPEL and Java form a strong alliance and enable faster development and maintenance of enterprise applications and their integrations. On the other hand, the integration between Java and BPEL could be improved. There have been different approaches, including Java snippets. • Software location after installing via Ubuntu Software Center

  Let me tell you my problem: I just move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu and I'm trying to setup my programming environment. I installed Eclipse via Ubuntu Software Center, then opened it and installed additional plugins. Problem came up when I tried to install Subclipse: according to the official guide, I installed JavaHL, but that damned library wasn't automatically linked by Eclipse, so I was told to "Note that JavaHL does not install in a location that is on Eclipse's default path, so eclipse must be launched with -vmargs -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni". Yes I know I have to modify eclipse.ini and add that vmargs line, but where is eclipse.ini??? I opened /usr/bin, the eclipse.exe is there but I can't found the rest. I really don't want to remove this Eclipse and download another from Eclipse download page, because I will have to reinstall every plugins again. Please can anyone tell me how to find the directory which contains software which installed via USC? Any help will be appreciated.

• How to remove the “AMD Testing use only” watermark from Ubuntu 12.10

  I've installed the latest catalyst driver (beta) following the step in this guide for Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal. My system is 64 bit and my graphic card is an ATI RadeonHD 6670, this g.c. is Officially Supported (Catalyst & Open Source), you can confirm that from this AMD Linux Community thread. I don't have any problem, except the AMD testing use only watermark. I see the following frame in any stage into the OS (logged, unlloged, etc.) except in the terminals. I found different versions of how to remove this image, but this change according to the system, so I want an answer from this popular (trusted) site. How to solve this issue in Ubuntu 12.10 32b? This procedure is different in a 64b system?

• Browsing Your ADF Application Module Pooling Params with WLST

  In ADF 11g you can of course use Enterprise Manager (EM) to browse and configure the settings used by ADF Business Components  Application Modules, as shown here for one of my sample deployed applications. This screen you can access from the EM homepage by pulling down the Application Deployment menu, and then ADF > Configure ADF Business Components. Then select the profile that you are actually using (Hint: look in the DataBindings.cpx file to work this out - probably the "Local" version unless you've explicitly changed it. )So, from this screen you can change the pooling parameters and the world is good. But what if you don't have EM installed? In that case you can use the WebLogic scripting capabilities to view (and Update) the MBean Properties. Explanation The pooling parameters and many others are handled through Message Driven Beans that are created for the deployed application in the server. In the case of the ADF BC pooling parameters, this MBean will combine the configuration deployed as part of the application, along with any overrides defined as -D environement commands on the JVM startup for the application server instance. Using WLST to Browse the Bean ValuesFor our purposes here I'm doing this interactively, although you can also write a script or write Java to achieve the same thing.Step 0: Before You Start You will need the followingAccess to the console on the machine that is running the serverThe WebLogic Admin username and password (I'll use weblogic/password as my example here - yours will be different)The name of the deployed application (in this example FMWdh_application1)The package path to the bc4j.xcfg file (in this example oracle.demo.fmwdh.model.service.common.bc4j.xcfg) This is based on the default path for your model project so it shoudl be fairly easy to work out.The BC configuration your AM is actually running with (look in the DataBindings.cpx for that. In this example DealHelpServiceDeployed is the profile being used..)Step 1: Start the WLST consoleTo start at the beginning, you need to run the WLST command but that needs a little setup:Change to the wlserver_10.3/server/bin directory e.g. under your Fusion Middleware Home[oracle@mymachine] cd /home/oracle/FMW_R1/wlserver_10.3/server/binSet your environment using the setWLSEnv script. e.g. on Oracle Enterprise Linux:[oracle@mymachine bin] source setWLSEnv.shStart the WLST interactive console[oracle@mymachine bin] java weblogic.WLSTInitializing WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST) ...Welcome to WebLogic Server Administration Scripting ShellType help() for help on available commandswls:/offline> Step 2:Enter the WLST commandsConnect to the server wls:> connect('weblogic','password')Change to the Custom root, this is where the AMPooling MBeans are registered wls:> custom()Change to the b4j MBean directorywls:> cd ('oracle.bc4j.mbean.config')Work out the correct directory for the AM configuration you need. This is the difficult bit, not because it's hard to do, but because the names are long. The structure here is such that every child MBean is displayed at the same level as the parent, so for each deployed application there will be many directories shown. In fact, do an ls() command here and you'll see what I mean. Each application will have one MBean for the app as a whole, and then for each deployed configuration in the .xcfg file you'll see: One for the config entry itself, and then one each for Security, DB Connection and AM Pooling. So if you deploy an app with just one configuration you'll see 5 directories, if it has two configurations in the .xcfg you'll see 9 and so on.The directory you are looking for will contain those bits of information you gathered in Step 0, specifically the Application Name, the configuration you are using and the xcfg name: First of all narrow your list to just those directories returned from the ls() command that begin oracle.bc4j.mbean.config:name=AMPool. These identify the AM pooling MBeans for all the deployed applications. • How to configure a zone cluster on Solaris Cluster 4.0

  This is a short overview on how to configure a zone cluster on Solaris Cluster 4.0. This is a little bit different as in Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3 because Solaris Cluster 4.0 is only running on Solaris 11. The name of the zone cluster must be unique throughout the global Solaris Cluster and must be configured on a global Solaris Cluster. Please read all the requirements for zone cluster in Solaris Cluster Software Installation Guide for SC4.0. For Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3 please refer to my previous blog Configuration steps to create a zone cluster in Solaris Cluster 3.2/3.3. A. Configure the zone cluster into the already running global clusterCheck if zone cluster can be created # cluster show-netprops to change number of zone clusters use # cluster set-netprops -p num_zoneclusters=12 Note: 12 zone clusters is the default, values can be customized! Create config file (zc1config) for zone cluster setup e.g: Configure zone cluster # clzc configure -f zc1config zc1 Note: If not using the config file the configuration can also be done manually # clzc configure zc1 Check zone configuration # clzc export zc1 Verify zone cluster # clzc verify zc1 Note: The following message is a notice and comes up on several clzc commands Waiting for zone verify commands to complete on all the nodes of the zone cluster "zc1"... Install the zone cluster # clzc install zc1 Note: Monitor the consoles of the global zone to see how the install proceed! (The output is different on the nodes) It's very important that all global cluster nodes have installed the same set of ha-cluster packages! Boot the zone cluster # clzc boot zc1 Login into non-global-zones of zone cluster zc1 on all nodes and finish Solaris installation. # zlogin -C zc1 Check status of zone cluster # clzc status zc1 Login into non-global-zones of zone cluster zc1 and configure the shell environment for root (for PATH: /usr/cluster/bin, for MANPATH: /usr/cluster/man) # zlogin -C zc1 If using additional name service configure /etc/nsswitch.conf of zone cluster non-global zones. hosts: cluster files netmasks: cluster files Configure /etc/inet/hosts of the zone cluster zones Enter all the logical hosts of non-global zones B. Add resource groups and resources to zone cluster Create a resource group in zone cluster # clrg create -n <zone-hostname-node1>,<zone-hostname-node2> app-rg Note1: Use command # cluster status for zone cluster resource group overview. • Leveraging Microsoft Patterns and Practices
