• pyODBC and Unicode Problem

  Hey guys, I'm working with pyODBC communicate with a MS SQL 2005 Express server. The table to which i'm trying to save the data consists of nvarchar columns. query = u"INSERT INTO tblPersons (name, birthday, gender) VALUES('" query = query + name + u"', '" query = query + birthday + u"', '" query = query + gender + u"')" cur.execute(query ) The variables name, birthrday and gende are read from an Excel file and they are Unicode strings. When I execute the query and either look at the table with SQL Server Management Studio or execute a query that fetches the data that was just inserted, all the data that was written in a non-English languages turn into question marks. The data that was written in English is preserved and appears in the table in the correct way. I tried adding CHARSET=UTF16 to my connection string, but had no luck with that. I can use UTF-8 which works fine but as a working convention, I need all the data saved in my DB to be UTF16. Thanks!

• How to effectively measure developer's work hours?

  I have a few software developers working for my projects and I would like to provide them a way to register time they spent on real development. There is good will to register development hours, no force, but we try to avoid techniques like excel sheets register because this is so uncomfortable. I can track svn commits, but this is unreliable. Developers also helps supporting different projects during the day, so assuming they work on one project by whole day is not true. I've seen utilities that popups a message every hour to confirm the project you're working on but this is annoying. Some kind of active-window-title-anaylzer might help (you can get solution name from there in the case of Visual Studio) but I have no experience with such idea. If you have any experience with programmers/designers work hours registration, please share with me. Thanks

• Data import wizard library for .Net?

  Does anyone know of a 3rd party data import wizard that can be embedded into applications? It should import from Excel, Access, SQLServer, csv, tab-separated flat file, XML, Oracle etc. We have a fixed data structure within our application and the user should be able to configure the wizard to match his/her import fields to our own data structure. The wizard should be a library of sorts – preferably a .Net type library. We may want to have it both web-based and desktop based (hence we may need an ASP.Net controls version and a Winforms version). We may also want integration with WPF and Silverlight. If there’s no UI wizard available, does anyone know of a non-UI library that supports easily configurable import from many, many different datasources?

• How to retrieve a binary file from .NET assembly?

  I have an excel file that I want to embed in my C# assembly. I have changed the build action of the XLSX file to "Embedded Resource". During runtime, I have to retrieve this XLSX file from the assembly. Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("AssemblyName.Output.xlsx"), true); StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(strPath); sw.Write(sr.ReadToEnd()); sr.Dispose(); sw.Dispose(); System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(strPath); As expected, this fails for the XLSX file since it is a binary data. This could works well with a text file. I tried binary read/write, but I am not able to get the code running. Thoughts?

  i am using the following code to read the details from a network folder which is restricted for only one user shell("net use q: \\serveryname\foldername /user:admin pwrd", AppWinStyle.Hide, True, 10000) Process.Start(path) shell("net use q: /delete") when i run this to open any pdf or jpg or any other files except word/excel/powerpoint, everything is working fine. but the problem comes only when i access a word file. in the step one, i am giving permission to access the word file. in the step two, word file is open. in the third, i am deleting the q drive. the problem is the word file is still open. so i am getting a dos window, saying that "some connections of still connected or searching some folders, do you want to force disconnect" please help.... how to access a word file (editable files) providing user name and password from the code and at the same time he shoud not have access to any other folders directly.

• Dynamic size canvas with Scroll bars

  Hi, I am developing a simple WPF application without any auto layout. The goal is when a user clicks (mouse down) a element (say textBlock) will appear at the location of the mouse click. For this I am using canvas panel embedded in a Grid of 1 row, 1 column and scrollviewer (visible). The issues are: 1. when the application window is resized the scroll viewers do not become active. 2. I want the ability to auto grow the canvas with mouse drag. Something like in MS-Excel when user drags the mouse horizontally/vertically the canvas should grow. I have searched net a lot to figure this out and am unable to get an answer.   Hi, I want to scrape data from www.marktplaats.nl . I want to analyze the scraped description, price, date and views in Excel/Access. I tried to scrape data with Ruby (nokogiri, scrapi) but nothing worked. (on other sites it worked well) The main problem is that for example selectorgadget and the add-on firebug (Firefox) don’t find any css I can use to scrape the page. On other sites I can extract the css with selectorgadget or firebug and use it with nokogiri or scrapi. Due to lack of experience it is difficult to identify the problem and therefore searching for a solution isn’t easy. Can you tell me where to start solving this problem and where I maybe can find more info about a similar scraping process? Thanks in advance!

• Job conditions conflicting with personal principles on software-development - how much is too much?

  Sorry for the incoming wall'o'text (and for my probably bad English) but I just need to get this off somehow. I also accept that this question will be probably closed as subjective and argumentative, but I need to know one thing: "how much BS are programmers supposed to put up with before breaking?" My background I'm 27 years old and have a B.Sc. in Computer engineering with a graduation grade of 1.8 from a university of applied science. I went looking for a job right after graduation. I got three offers right away, with two offers paying vastly more than the last one, but that last one seemed more interesting so I went for that. My situation I've been working for the company now for 17 months now, but it feels like a drag more and more each day. Primarily because the company (which has only 5 other developers but me, and of these I work with 4) turned out to be pretty much the anti-thesis of what I expected (and was taught in university) from a modern software company. I agreed to accept less than half of the usual payment appropriate for my qualification for the first year because I was promised a trainee program. However, the trainee program turned out to be "here you got a computer, there's some links on the stuff we use, and now do what you colleagues tell you". Further, during my whole time there (trainee or not) I haven't been given the grace of even a single code-review - apparently nobody's interested in my work as long as it "just works". I was told in the job interview that "Microsoft technology played a central role in the company" yet I've been slowly eroding my congnitive functions with Flex/Actionscript/Cairngorm ever since I started (despite having applied as a C#/.NET developer). Actually, the company's primary projects are based on Java/XSLT and Flex/Actionscript (with some SAP/ABAP stuff here and there but I'm not involved in that) and they've been working on these before I even applied. Having had no experience either with that particular technology nor the framework nor the field (RIA) nor in developing business scale applications I obviously made several mistakes. However, my boss told me that he let me make those mistakes (which ate at least 2 months of development time on their own) on purpose to provide some "learning experience". Even when I was still a trainee I was already tasked with working on a business-critical application. On my own. Without supervision. Without code-reviews. My boss thinks agile methods are a waste of time/money and deems putting more than one developer on any project not efficient. Documentation is not necessary and each developer should only document what he himself needs for his work. Recently he wanted us to do bug tracking with Excel and Email instead of using an already existing Bugzilla, overriding an unanimous decision made by all developers and testers involved in the process - only after another senior developer had another hour-long private discussion with him he agreed to let us use the bugtracker. Project management is basically not present, there are only a few Excel sheets floating around where the senior developer lists some things (not all, mind you) with a time estimate ranging from days to months, trying to at least somehow organize the whole mess. A development process is also basically not present, each developer just works on his own however he wants. There are not even coding conventions in the company. Testing is done manually with a single tester (sometimes two testers) per project because automated testing wasn't given the least thought when the whole project was started. I guess it's not a big surprise when I say that each developer also has his own share of hundreds of overhours (which are, of course, unpaid). Each developer is tasked with working on his own project(s) which in turn leads to a very extensive knowledge monopolization - if one developer was to have an accident or become ill there would be absolutely no one who could even hope to do his work. Considering that each developer has his own business-critical application to work on, I guess that's a pretty bad situation. I've been trying to change things for the better. I tried to introduce a development process, but my first attempt was pretty much shot down by my boss with "I don't want to discuss agile methods". After that I put together a process that at least resembled how most of the developers were already working and then include stuff like automated (or at least organized) testing, coding conventions, etc. However, this was also shot down because it wasn't "simple" enought to be shown on a business slide (actually, I wasn't even given the 15 minutes I'd have needed to present the process in the meeting). My problem I can't stand working there any longer. Seriously, I consider to resign on monday, which still leaves me with 3 months to work there due to the cancelation period. My primary goal since I started studying computer science was being a good computer scientist, working with modern technologies and adhering to modern and proven principles and methods. However, the company I'm working for seems to make that impossible. Some days I feel as if was living in a perverted real-life version of the Dilbert comics. My question Am I overreacting? Is this the reality each graduate from university has to face? Should I betray my sound principles and just accept these working conditions? Or should I gtfo of there? What's the opinion of other developers on this matter. Would you put up with all that stuff?

• Finding intersection of two spheres

  Hi, Consider the following problem - I am given 2 links of length L0 and L1. P0 is the point that the first link starts at and P1 is the point that I want the end of second link to be at in 3-D space. I am supposed to write a function that should take in these 3-D points (P0 and P1) as inputs and should find all configurations of the links that put the second link's end point at P1. My understanding of how to go about it is - Each link L0 and L1 will create a sphere S0 and S1 around itself. I should find out the intersection of those two spheres (which will be a circle) and print all points that are on the circumference of that circle. I saw gmatt's first reply on the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1406375/finding-intersection-points-between-3-spheres but could not understand it properly since the images did not show up. I also saw a formula for finding out the intersection at mathworld[dot]wolfram[dot]com/Sphere-SphereIntersection[dot]html . I could find the radius of intersection by the method given on mathworld. Also I can find the center of that circle and then use the parametric equation of circle to find the points. The only doubt that I have is will this method work for the points P0 and P1 mentioned above ? Please comment and let me know your thoughts.

• this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer

  I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

• Need help parsing file/writing script

  Hey all, I have been doing nothing but web development over the last few years and haven't written any Java or C++ in what feels like forever. I don't necessarily need to use these languages, so I'm entirely open to suggestion. I was given an email list by a client to import into their mailchimp account yesterday and unfortunately, Mailchimp couldn't read the file. It's a text file, but I don't believe it's tab delimited (which would make this much, much easier for me). A small portion of the file (I've changed last names and email addresses) can be viewed here: http://sparktoignite.com/patients.txt If anyone has suggestions on how I can get this into a Mailchimp readable format (csv, tab delimited txt, excel) please let me know. I feel like 3 years ago I would've been able to do this in a matter of minutes, but given that I haven't touched anything other than RoR, PHP, and jQuery for the last few years, I don't know where to start. • Automating WebTrends analysis

  Every week I access server logs processed by WebTrends (for about 7 profiles) and copy ad clickthrough and visitor information into Excel spreadsheets. A lot of it is just accessing certain sections and finding the right title and then copying the unique visitor information. I tried using WebTrends' built-in query tool but that is really poorly done (only uses a drag-and-drop system instead of text-based) and it has a maximum number of parameters and maximum length of queries to query with. As far as I know, the tools in WebTrends are not suitable to my purpose of automating the entire web metrics gathering process. I've gotten access to the raw server logs, but it seems redundant to parse that given that they are already being processed by WebTrends. To me it seems very scriptable, but how would I go about doing that? Is screen-scraping an option?

• "Could not load file or assembly" error on trying to access auxillary assemblies from COM

  We have the project structure as follows: COMExposedCCW.dll -refers- BusinessLayer.dll -refers- Utils.dll COMExposedCCW.dll -refers- Utils.dll The COMExposedCCW.dll has been registered for COM interop. From the COM application{Excel} we can successfully create the CCW object and access its properties, but when we try to invoke methods that refer to the Business/Utils layer, it throws an exception that the file or assembly{Business/Utils} could not be found. The Business/Utils dlls are present in the same folder as the CCW. On copying the Business/Utils to the COM application directory it works fine. I've tried the following: Set "HintPath/" in the CCW project I dont want to dynamically load the assemblies using Reflection {there should be a more elegant solution} Thanks in advance.

• Calculating bounding grid coordinates to a user click on google maps/google earth

  Hello, I have a requirement to calculate the centroid or geodesic midpoint of when a user clicks in between the lat/long grid crossing. The crossing forms a square in most parts of GE and sometimes elongated rectangles. This is due to the shape of the earth of course. I'm looking for a valid mathematical formula that would allow a user to click anywhere in between this grid and then an accurate function (in Javascript or server side code) that would take an assumed grid resolution (say 1km intervals for this discussion) and the input coordinates that should return a centroid coordinate within that graticule grid. If we assume that the grid is UTM standard and has a max resolution of 1km (or make this a parameter), I need to detect the four other points nearby and then calculating the centroid is not as difficult. I welcome any feedback you all may have and appreciate it. I don't have a simple way of letting a user click anywhere on the grid and finding the grid bounding coordinates (making a square of 4 coordinates) or the centroid / midpoint of the graticule grid square necessary. One thought is to use assumptions as much as possible using a reference such as UTM coordinate reference. If I assume that the grid is X degrees wide, can we have a pure javascript function take any input coordinate and return for me the bounding graticule coordinates in Decimal Degrees? Another thought I had was to create the grid in a geo-spatial layer to take any input coordinate and return the nearest centroid of the graticule? Does this make sense? Thanks! Omar

• Writing an app with Perl and Ruby?

  I am working on a project that is mostly Ruby on Rails. However, I need to generate and parse Excel files in this project (I know, I know...), so I've been using Perl's Spreadsheet::WriteExcel and Spreadsheet::ParseExcel which work well. However, what is the best way to combine this use of Perl with the larger Ruby on Rails app? Is calling the Perl script with backticks the kosher way to go about this? It feels a little hacky to me, but if that is the only (or best) way, then that's what I'll do. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has some suggestions or advise. Thank you!

Programming best practice includes the use of unit-testing to test the functions within these packages while they are being written and when they are used. I am aware of a few packages for unit testing within R, these being RUnit Svunit Testthat I'm interested to know; Are there any other packages out there ? Given peoples experience, do these packages excel at different things ? What's the current state of the art in unit testing for R ?

• How can I test that my hash function is good in terms of max-load?

  I have read through various papers on the 'Balls and Bins' problem and it seems that if a hash function is working right (ie. it is effectively a random distribution) then the following should/must be true if I hash n values into a hash table with n slots (or bins): Probability that a bin is empty, for large n is 1/e. Expected number of empty bins is n/e. Probability that a bin has k collisions is <= 1/k!. Probability that a bin has at least k collisions is <= (e/k)**k. These look easy to check. But the max-load test (the maximum number of collisions with high probability) is usually stated vaguely. Most texts state that the maximum number of collisions in any bin is O( ln(n) / ln(ln(n)) ). Some say it is 3*ln(n) / ln(ln(n)). Other papers mix ln and log - usually without defining them, or state that log is log base e and then use ln elsewhere. Is ln the log to base e or 2 and is this max-load formula right and how big should n be to run a test?   Is there a way to calculate the average distance of array elements from array average value, by only "visiting" each array element once? (I search for an algorithm) Example: Array : [ 1 , 5 , 4 , 9 , 6 ] Average : ( 1 + 5 + 4 + 9 + 6 ) / 5 = 5 Distance Array : [|1-5|, |5-5|, |4-5|, |9-5|, |6-5|] = [4 , 0 , 1 , 4 , 1 ] Average Distance : ( 4 + 0 + 1 + 4 + 1 ) / 5 = 2 The simple algorithm needs 2 passes. 1st pass) Reads and accumulates values, then divides the result by array length to calculate average value of array elements. 2nd pass) Reads values, accumulates each one's distance from the previously calculated average value, and then divides the result by array length to find the average distance of the elements from the average value of the array. The two passes are identical. It is the classic algorithm of calculating the average of a set of values. The first one takes as input the elements of the array, the second one the distances of each element from the array's average value. Calculating the average can be modified to not accumulate the values, but caclulating the average "on the fly" as we sequentialy read the elements from the array. The formula is: Compute Running Average of Array's elements ------------------------------------------- RA[i] = E[i] {for i == 1} RA[i] = RA[i-1] - RA[i-1]/i + A[i]/i { for i > 1 } Where A[x] is the array's element at position x, RA[x] is the average of the array's elements between position 1 and x (running average). My question is: Is there a similar algorithm, to calculate "on the fly" (as we read the array's elements), the average distance of the elements from the array's mean value? The problem is that, as we read the array's elements, the final average value of the array is not known. Only the running average is known. So calculating differences from the running average will not yield the correct result. I suppose, if such algorithm exists, it probably should have the "ability" to compensate, in a way, on each new element read for the error calculated as far.

  is there any way to do something like a mail merge, where the data (9-15 chars long) is converted to a barcode? im using trying to use openoffice's code128 for calc, but for some reason, every 10 strings, the barcode goes crazy, and the ascii tells me to register at the site where the extension came from, which i dont want to do i also found one for oodraw, but that requires the values to be inputted manually. since im not familiar with the macros, i can't write something that will do it automatically what im trying to do is: take an old pdf (only 1 page) covert it to word or picture or something add a function/macro/whatever to show a barcode (whether or not the barcode shows in this file, i dont care), given a string from excel data reconvert to separate pdfs or some other way that adds barcodes to pdfs all other free programs i have found do not do this nicely, and since im not really a pdf person, im not going to buy random programs. i just need this done for one large batch of data

  Hi, Last year, I worked as a free lancer on one project. Unfortunately, person I worked for, decided that he is not happy about my work, and he decided to fired me. After 7 months, he called me, and ask to me return "his" money. In any other case, he will sue me. His version is that I have to give him 1500 euros, but my version is that he own me another 1500. I have no contract, only emails and Excel file with counted hours. What do I have to do? I don't want to give him back 1500, because it was my work, and his bad management. Also, I do not want my 1500, because I think it's not fair from my side. What should I do?
