• How can i determine the version of the Windows SDK installed on my computer?

  Hello everyone :) I've very recently decided to teach myself c++ and win32 programming after learning vb.net, and i've got a very simple question: How can I determine what version of the Windows SDK is installed on my computer? I'm asking so I can install the latest version if it isn't installed allready, before i start playing around with c++. I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 as my IDE. (I spent 10 minutes using Google to search for an answer, but I couldn't find one) If anyone could help me, it would be very much appreciated. Matt.

• Has anyone managed to get Visual Studio 2003 running on Windows 7?

  Yes, I know... I could set up a virtual machine running XP. Unfortunately our build environment is such that we need to be running VC2003, 2005 and 2008 concurrently and it would be much more convenient if I could run 2003 natively on Windows 7 for the few projects we have that require it. I realize some things may not be available in the IDE, but I was able to run 2003 under windows Vista and if I could get the same base level of functionality under Windows 7 I would be extremely happy. Right now I get an error opening the *.pdb file when I compile after switching vc2003 to run as Administrator under compatibility mode for XP SP 2. Thanks!

  I'm trying to attach to a remote machine with code similar to the following: Debugger2 db (Debugger2)dte.Debugger; Transport trans = db.Transports.Item("Default"); Process2 proc2 = (Process2)db.GetProcesses(trans, "MACHINENAME").Item("SERVICENAME"); proc2.Attach2(); I've gotten it to work by logging on through remote desktop and manually starting the debugger, but I have to stay logged in. The problem is, I don't want to stay logged into the remote machine. Is there a way to automatically launch the debugger, similar to what happens when I attach through the IDE?

I'm talking about methods to fast-hide\camouflage not job related web pages on your desktop when boss arrives like a ghost\ninja behind your shoulders. I know how much can be frustrating, programming hard for ten hours and then been caught by your boss watching XKCD during a 2 minutes break. I think the most common anti boss trick is the evergreen CTRL+TAB, but you have to be fast and your left hand has to be near the keyboard. I saw pitch black brightness on Lcd (how can you pretend to program on that?) or custom sized browser to fit a little space just below the IDE. My favourite one at the moment is using fire gesture plugin with FF; with a micro gesture you can hide FF to your tray in a blink of an eye. Do you have any trick to share?

  Hi, I'm looking to do some development in flash 10, specifically for the new file api (reading/writing files on the user's local machine). • Java session facade not being found via InitialContext lookups

  I have a project that is Java EE 5 running on Glassfish. The IDE is Netbeans 6.7.1. We periodically have a very annoying problem with new session facades not being located via InitialContext: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: No object bound to name java:comp/env/GlobalConfigEntityFacadeLocal In my class (within the same EJB container), I can use the other session facades just fine. This sort of problem happens periodically, and a mixture of clean&build and deleting the build-impl.xml files from nbproject sometimes resolve this. • Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

• Huge page buffer vs. multiple simultaneous processes

  One of our customer has a 35 Gb database with average active connections count about 70-80. Some tables in database have more than 10M records per table. Now they have bought new server: 4 * 6 Core = 24 Cores CPU, 48 Gb RAM, 2 RAID controllers 256 Mb cache, with 8 SAS 15K HDD on each. 64bit OS. I'm wondering, what would be a fastest configuration: 1) FB 2.5 SuperServer with huge buffer 8192 * 3500000 pages = 29 Gb or 2) FB 2.5 Classic with small buffer of 1000 pages. Maybe some one has tested such case before and will save me days of work :) Thanks in advance.

• Trouble dragging and dropping gui components onto other .net forms using NHibernate

  Hi, using VS2008, here. I have a GUI component that loads some stuff from a database mapped by nhibernate in its constructor. When I drag and drop this component onto another form from the toolbox, NHibernate complains that it can't find the config file in program files\visual studio 9\common7\ide. Why is it looking here for the cfg file? I'm actually calling database stuff through another project in the same solution, and the cfg file is located at the root of that project. copy/pasting the cfg file over to there does work, but I'm working with svn here and I don't want to have configuration files outside the repository. Something else that would help would be turning off how it tries to load the data in the form design screen. How would I do that?

  Hi there! I've got an XML file that is parsed and written in my application. From within my IDE (Eclipse) I simply address it like this: Reading: private String xmlFile = "file.xml"; and then I build the document: doc = sax.build(xmlFile); Writing is done like this: writer = new FileWriter("file.xml"); Runs great so far, but after bundling my application, the file is no longer accessible. What exactly do I have to do to make it accessible from within an application bundle? I'm absolutely not familiar with the classpath or whatever I need for that, so please go easy on me! • Curious: Could LLVM be used for Infocom z-machine code, and if so how? (in general)

  Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if/how LLVM could be used to obtain a higher performance Z-Machine VM for interactive fiction. (If it could be used, I'm just looking for some high-level ideas or suggestions, not a detailed solution.) It might seem odd to desire higher performance for a circa-1978 technology, but apparently Z-Machine games produced by the modern Inform 7 IDE can have performance issues due to the huge number of rules that need to be evaluated with each turn.   Hi, I am working with rails 2.3 with netbeans 6.5.1 on vista. I want to install more plugins from Git in netbeans like shoulda, cucumber etc. I have these questions: 1) I do not have much knowledge of Git. Is it necessary to install Git to make use of the Git plugins in netbeans? Are gems and plugins dependant on each other? 2) In case Git is needed and I do install msysgit , for example I can use the command ruby script/plugin install http://github.com/thoughtbot/shoulda.git/ to install shoulda plugin. • VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

  This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project.   I am validating constructor and method arguments, as I want to the software, especially the model part of it, to fail fast. Something like: public MyModelClass(@NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class, message="arg1 must not be null") String arg1, @NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class) String arg2, OtherModelClass otherModelInstance) { // actual constructor code... } In my eyes this would make the actual code a lot more readable. • Debug a local maven dependency with eclipse

The variables are complex data types and depending on the current language, the appropriate phrase is returned. Some brief pro and cons: Since Eclipse is use, tracking and finding unused localizations are easier when they are saved as variables, compared to having them in a file.   I use Netbeans IDE (6.5) and I have a SQLite 2.x database. I installed a JDBC SQLite driver from zentus.com and added a new driver in Nebeans services panel. Instead the old ugly and useless debug dialog comes up: To make sure, I've checked the following: "Tools / Options / Debugging / General / Enable the exception assistant" is on. "Debug / Exceptions / Common Language Runtime Exceptions / Thrown" is on. I reset my Visual Studio Settings. I googled. I checked all relevant stackoverflow questions. How can I get the Exception Assistant back? Who gives me the golden tip?

• $(MSBuildStartupDirectory) in Visual Studio points to different places on different machines

  In a large solution, I'm integrating Gendarme into Visual Studio 2008 compilation process. I am using GendarmeMsBuild task along with a .targets file to add a AfterBuild target to every project in the solution. I am looking for a way to import this file into .csproj files in a way that wouldn't require me to change the include path (the projects have different nesting levels). Apart from using NuGet SolutionDir variable, best way to solve this seemed to be to use $(MSBuildStartupDirectory). However, as it turns out, on some machines, using the same version of VS 2008 (as same updates installed, as far as I was able to check) this resolves to the solution directory, and on others to c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE. How can I either get this to always resolve to the solution folder or obtain the base folder in another consistent way?

  I am developing a simple platform game using Java using BlueJ as the IDE. Right now I have player/enemy sprites, platforms and other items in the game drawn using polygons and simple shapes. Eventually I hope to replace them with actual images. (This does not imply a program launched with javaw was launched from eclipse). I can find the arguments passed using RuntimeMXBean RuntimemxBean = ManagementFactory.getRuntimeMXBean(); List<String> lst=RuntimemxBean.getInputArguments(); for(int i=0;i<lst.size();i++) System.out.println(lst.get(i)); But this does not tell me whether it was launched using java or javaw. Is there any way to find it out? Another related question is why does eclipse use javaw to launch programs?

• Can GraphViz be used for a graph editing GUI?

  I am creating an application which will allow a developer to create a program flow-chart by selecting pre-defined functions from a ToolBox (which will show up as small graphical elements). In other words, developer will select one or more pre-defined functions (graphical elements) from ToolBox and drag-drop on the main work area. The application will then, based on the flow of functions selected, will auto-generate ready-to-compile-code. I looked a GraphViz, but am not sure whether it can be used to create a GUI IDE for editing graphical elements. I am looking for a functionality similart to Microsoft Visio, where users can add/remove/drag-drop/ various shapes to create a diagram. Does GraphViz fit in here? If yes, can you direct me to some examples showing how to do it? If GraphViz cannot be used, what are the other open source/free components available? I am intending to build the final application in .Net.

• What coding standards do you follow?

  I was just curious what coding standards people followed. I for one use the following: Brackets ALWAYS go on the next line. For instance: int main() { //Blah... } I never use code folding. (Yes my IDE's do support it (Xcode and Eclipse). Put related functions/methods single-spaced, otherwise double space. Here is an example: int foo = 0; printf("%d",foo); those are related while these are not: printf("Hello, World!"); return(0); I don't put else statements on the same line as the closing bracket for the preceding if statement. Most of the time in Java if a program needs multiple try catch statements I will just put the whole thing in one try catch.
