• Using PC or Mac keyboard as Bluetooth keyboard for iPad?

  I would like to use my computer keyboard (USB) as a Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad, while I am using it with my computer. I was hoping their was an "app for that" that I could run on either Mac or Windows. I imagine how it would work: It would have to emulate a Bluetooth keyboard, and be able to pair with the iPad. Then, when you give focus to this app, it transmits keystrokes from your built-in keyboard out over the Bluetooth connection. Seems simple, but I can't seem to find anything definitive on Google. Has anybody done this? I figure this is cheaper that buying a Apple iPad Keyboard Dock or a Apple Wireless Keyboard from the Apple Store. Also, it's one less item on my desk, which gets cluttered enough with one keyboard.

• Is there a way reinstall a fresh Adobe trial on Mac?

  I was wondering if it is easier to fool the Adobe Installer into giving a second and third etc 30 day trial of various product on Mac OS X 10.5 than it is on Windows. Is this doable? How so. I am expecting to get a PC version of CS4 soon possibly through a legit source, this is just for the interim. Edit : I am not a big fan of pirating, but as I stated above, I expecting a legit copy soon. Why the downvotes?

  Im automating my mac installation using 'puppet'. as a part of it I need to install several programs that come in a .dmg format. I use the following to mount them: sudo /usr/bin/hdiutil mount -plist -nobrowse -readonly -quiet -mountrandom /tmp Program.dmg The problem is that some .dmg files come with a license attached, and so script is stuck accepting the license. (there is no stdin/out when running with puppet, so I can't manually approve it to continue). Is there a way to pre-approve or force-approve the license?

• How can I figure out exactly which process is keeping my Mac from going to sleep and waking it up?

  I have read this knowledgebase article, but would like to know if there's a way to tell exactly which process is causing my Mac not to follow the sleep schedule I have set in System Preferences Energy Saver. I have narrowed it down to a being a process and will explain why I think so (see below). I am running OS X (10.6.5) on the new iMac 27" and I am certain it's not the following: The "Wake for Network Access" checkbox in Energy Saver settings (has never been a previous issue) Peripherals (has never been a previous issue) Any active GUI application (all are closed) Additional USB/FireWire drives (none are connected) Bluetooth (it's off) Sharing services (has never been a previous issue) The symptoms are as follows: The computer doesn't go to sleep at the predetermined time. It will wake up some number of hours after being put manually to sleep (but not within the first few seconds/minutes.) Is there a specific string I should be looking for in Console? I have tried searching for "wake" and "sleep" but can't make total sense of the results.

  I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion which has a single local user (the local administrator account that I setup) and then the domain user setup on the laptop. I've gone into "Login Options" under System Preferences Users & Groups and set the option "Display login window as: Name and password". When the laptop first boots, it has automatically selected the local admin account, and I don't see where I have the option to change users. However, when if I log into that local administrator account and then log out (without rebooting) it will allow me to enter the user and password.

• Which Large File System Format to use for USB Flash drive compatible with Ubuntu/Mac/Windows?

  I've had this problem for a long time and can't find a solution. I switch between the 3 OSes all the time and use a 1TB USB Drive to do so. I can't seem to find a format that is compatible across all systems that handles large files (at least 8-9 GB). Does anyone have a solution for this? Recently I've tried exFat but that messes up the filesystem when trying to read on windows after adding files from Ubuntu (using the fuse driver). The OSes currently I'm using are Windows Vista/7, Mac OS X (10.6.5) and Ubuntu 10.10

  I have a Macbook Air with Mac OSX 10.8.2 . I have been wondering how do I select the File Menu which I am so used to doing in Windows using Alt + F, so that I do not have to click on the File menu each time I need to do something. I googled and checked out a bunch of articles as well. This wikipedia article suggests http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts CTRL +F2 then F. I tried this in Sublime Text and did not work for me. Any clues? Thanks.

My Cisco VPN clients connects fine in Mac OS X but I am unable to remote desktop. I am also unable to ping my work laptop. The laptop is powered on and not sleeping. I can access it via LogMeIn. If I were to actually pug into our network at the building. I can remote desktop to my work laptop from my Macbook. If I use a Windows virtual machine and connect using the Windows Cisco VPN client, I am able to RDP and ping my work laptop. What is wrong with my OS X VPN connection?

• Can I format a USB key in GUID mode in windows 7 to make it Mac OSX boot friendly?

  I have a macbookpro that wont boot properly. I've tried resetting the PRAM (holding down option - alt - P - R), but it doesn't work, it gets halfway through the boot process and says "You need to restart your computer" in several languages. Recently I downloaded a USB Key compatible Linux OS. This USB Key works as a boot loader on Windows machines, but on OSX it can only find the Harddrive partitions when I go into the boot loader menu (holding down Option on startup). I am assuming it is because it is formatted as FAT32, and not GUID Table. I believe my CD drive is also bust, it hasn't worked in a long time. I don't have another Mac computer, so is there a way I can format the USB key as GUID Partition from a windows 7 machine?

  I installed a 30-day "test drive" of QuarkXpress, but got pulled in to other projects and didn't have time to test it. I now need to test it, but the 30 days are up. So I want to install the "test drive" again, but it won't let me. So far I uninstalled the old copy, signed up under a different account, and downloaded a new version. I know there has to be application data somewhere, but I am a PC person and don't know where to look in the Apple. HELP! Thanks.   On my Mac OS X machine, how would you recommend I install various software that's been ported from Linux? I don't install such software very frequently, but I've been using MacPorts and it always seems quite slow, presumably because it has to compile the packages on-the-fly. I'd much prefer a package management system that has binary packages, saving me the need to compile things every time I want to download something new. I think Fink has binaries for some of the packages, but I usually see MacPorts recommended as the system to use. Which do you think works better and why? (Or is there another system that I haven't heard of?)

• Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

  So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

• Why does Mac OS X sometimes complain that a copy failed because a file is in use?

  Recently I've been copying files from DVDs to network storage on my Mac running Leopard 10.5.7. I'm just dragging and dropping in Finder to perform the copy. Occasionally the copy will fail with a dialog complaining that a file is in use. If I repeat the copy generally it completes successfully. I could understand this being a problem if one was trying to move a file and it was open by another app. But none of these files are open in other apps. I just pop the DVD in, drag and drop the files to my NAS's network share and sometimes it fails with the "file in use" error. This is very annoying. Anyone have any ideas?

• Linux: how to "zoom" into a screen area à la Mac OS X?

  It seems to me on Mac OS X it is possible to "zoom" (like a photocamera does) into a region of the screen. It is handy for example to put at full monitor size a video which would otherwise be limited to be just into a small window (ie. embedded in a web page and not watchable standalone.), obviously losing some quality due to the "zoom". Do you know of any tool or way to do the same thing on a Linux desktop (with Gnome as desktop manager if it is desktop manager dependant). Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

  I'm writing a shell script, and I need to know the archetecture, ie PPC or Intel. Back in the day, there was a program /bin/arch that told you, but my mac doesn't seem to have it... Is there an easy way I can do this? Grep for something in a logfile? call some other program that spits that out as a side effect? • Programmatically change height of the window more than the height of the screen in Mac OS X

  Respected low-level users of Mac OS, please, help. I'm trying programmatically to change height of window of safari (or other window). I'm was trying used AppleScript and AXUIElementSetAttributeValue of Carbon, but none of these methods can't increase the window bigger than the height of the screen. But, the width changes without any problems. I guess I'd be starting with something like SetWindowPos with SWP_NOSENDCHANGING flag under Win32. Maybe, you can disable this functionality, which monitors the size of the window or completely shutdown the one who is responsible for it? Note that I want to do this programmatically from an external process - I'm not asking how to control just my own app's window size and position. Thanks.

  I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion.   We have 1 Mac, with 1 iTunes account, and 3 iOS devices. Every time we sync one device, iTunes either spams it with ALL apps from ALL devices, OR it removes all of the apps from the device including all the data. Which is very annoying. Someone told me there is a way to tell iTunes to keep separate track of the devices. How can I setup iTunes such that it will not transfer all my iPhone-only apps to my iPad every time I sync? Basically I want the devices to be the "master". They give the direction which apps should be on the device, and not the other way around.

• Why does everybody have the same MAC address as me?

  I just bought some consumer-grade McCheap PCI-E NICs (and this was a bad idea). They both have the same MAC address. When I google it, it seems like every card of that company has the same address: 00:50:43:00:45:3e. Shouldn't they be unique? According to lspci it's a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 20). Is there a way to permanently flash a new address?
