• Databound Accordian Control

  This sample shows how to bind data to an AJAX Accordian control, using the AJAX Control Toolkit. The first thing you will need to do, is to download it from the AJax.ASP.Net website. Then, once it's downloaded and installed, go to the Bin folder, where it's located, find the AjaxcontrolToolkit.dll and copy it to the Bin folder of your website. Once it's there, you're off to the races. Note the 'Register' statement at the top of the code here, and then, look at the different properties in the control itself. When databinding the Accordian control, you will use the HeaderTemplate and ContentTemplate tags, instead of the normal Header and Content pane tags. Add a little CSS for flavor (see the ContentCssClass property of the Accordian control, and the DIV class for the header), and we're good to go.

• Plymouth did not install properly

  I was installing the plymouth manager in hopes of making a custom loading screen. While the terminal was working, my computer unexpectedly powered off. I can open up the manager and it appears to do what it is supposed to (minus the fact that I can't make my own theme) and the screen only shows on powering down. Anyway, all of the advice I have seen so far have resulted in errors and nothing getting fixed. I do not have permissions to simply select the folder and delete it for some reason and I have not been able to find out how to grant myself those permissions. I guess my question then is how do I get rid of the plymouth manager so I can reinstall it properly? • Can't bind gnome-do to Super + Space or Ctrl+Alt+Space

  With today's updates to 12.04 I can no longer bind gnome-do to either ctrl+alt+space or super+space. With 11.10 it wasn't possible to use super+space, on a fresh install of 12.04 super+space was working properly. Today it stopped working, if I try to bind control+alt+space then the controlkey shows up in the keyboard binding as Primary. I am running Unity, which in the past blocked super+space, it seemed to have stopped blocking it on 12.04. It shouldn't affect ctrl+alt+space. Configuring either binding produces the following error in the gnome-do output: libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! libdo-WARNING **: Binding 'space' failed! I'm stuck binding to shift+alt+space.

• Share Folders & Files Between Vista and XP Machines

  Since Microsoft has three operating systems in use, chances are you’ll find yourself needing to share files between XP, Vista, Windows 7, or some combination of the three. Here we take a look at sharing between a Vista and XP on your home network. Share Without Password Protected Sharing If you’re not worried about who’s accessing the files and folders, the easiest method is to disable Password Protected Sharing. So on the Vista machine open Network and Sharing Center. Under Sharing and Discovery make sure Network Discovery, File Sharing, and, Public Folder Sharing are turned on. Also turn off Password Protected Sharing… Now go into the Vista Public folder, located in C:\Users\Public, and add what you want to share or create a new folder. In this example we created a new folder called XP_Share and added some files to it. On the XP machine go into My Network Places and under Network Tasks click on View Workgroup Computers. Now you’ll see all of the computers on your network which should be part of the same Workgroup. Here we need to double-click on the Vista computer. And there we go…no password to enter so we can access the XP_Share folder or anything else that is located in the Public folder. Share with Password Protected Sharing If you want to keep Password Protected Sharing turned on, then we need to do things a little different. When it’s turned on and you try to access the Vista machine from XP, you’re prompted for a password, and no matter what you think the credentials are, you can’t get access…very annoying. So what we need to do is add the XP Machine as a user. Right-click on Computer from the Start Menu or desktop icon and select Manage from the context menu. The Computer Management screen opens up and you want to expand Local Users and Groups, then the Users folder. Then right-click any open area an select New User. Now create a new user name and password, you can also fill in the other fields if you want. Then make sure to uncheck User must change password at next logon and check the box next to Password never expires. Click the Create button and close out of the New User screen. You’ll then see the new user we created in the list and you can close out of the Computer Management window. Now back on the XP computer when you double-click on the Vista machine, your prompted to log in. Just type in the username and password you just created. Now you’ll have access to the Public folder contents. Set up Sharing on XP If you want to access a shared folder from the Vista computer located on the XP machine, it’s the same process in reverse. On the XP computer in Shared Documents, right-click on the folder you want to share and select Sharing and Security. Then select the radio button next to Share this folder and click Ok. Go into Computer Management and create a new user… Now from the Vista machine double click on the XP machine icon, enter the password, then access the folders and files you need. If you have multiple versions of Windows on your home network, you’ll now be able to access files and folders from each of them.   BIG Data – such a big word – everybody talks about this now a days. It is the word in the database world. In one of the conversation I asked my friend Jasjeet Sigh the same question – what is Big Data? He instantly came up with a very effective write-up.  Jasjeet is working as a Technical Manager with Koenig Solutions. He leads the SQL domain, and holds rich IT industry experience. Talking about Koenig, it is a 19 year old IT training company that offers several certification choices. Some of its courses include SharePoint Training, Project Management certifications, Microsoft Trainings, Business Intelligence programs, Web Design and Development courses etc. Big Data, as the name suggests, is about data that is BIG in nature. The data is BIG in terms of size, and it is difficult to manage such enormous data with relational database management systems that are quite popular these days. Big Data is not just about being large in size, it is also about the variety of the data that differs in form or type. Some examples of Big Data are given below : Scientific data related to weather and atmosphere, Genetics etc Data collected by various medical procedures, such as Radiology, CT scan, MRI etc Data related to Global Positioning System Pictures and Videos Radio Frequency Data Data that may vary very rapidly like stock exchange information Apart from difficulties in managing and storing such data, it is difficult to query, analyze and visualize it. The characteristics of Big Data can be defined by four Vs: Volume: It simply means a large volume of data that may span Petabyte, Exabyte and so on. However it also depends organization to organization that what volume of data they consider as Big Data. Variety: As discussed above, Big Data is not limited to relational information or structured Data. It can also include unstructured data like pictures, videos, text, audio etc. Velocity:  Velocity means the speed by which data changes. The higher is the velocity, the more efficient should be the system to capture and analyze the data. Missing any important point may lead to wrong analysis or may even result in loss. Veracity: It has been recently added as the fourth V, and generally means truthfulness or adherence to the truth. In terms of Big Data, it is more of a challenge than a characteristic. It is difficult to ascertain the truth out of the enormous amount of data and the one that has high velocity. There are always chances of having un-precise and uncertain data. It is a challenging task to clean such data before it is analyzed. Big Data can be considered as the next big thing in the IT sector in terms of innovation and development. If appropriate technologies are developed to analyze and use the information, it can be the driving force for almost all industrial segments. These include Retail, Manufacturing, Service, Finance, Healthcare etc. This will help them to automate business decisions, increase productivity, and innovate and develop new products.   I know there are site tools to check if your webpage is alive, has compression, etc but lets not get into that. What are useful sites to paste code in and to share links of? The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.

• 5 Ways to Determine Mobile Location

  In my previous post, I mentioned the importance of determining the location of a consumer using their mobile phone.  Retailers can track anonymous mobile phones to determine traffic patterns both inside and outside their stores.  And with consumers' permission, retailers can send location-aware offers to mobile phones; for example, a coupon for cereal as you walk down that aisle.  When paying with Square, your location is matched with the transaction.  So there are lots of reasons for retailers to want to know the location of their customers.  But how is it done? I thought I'd dive a little deeper on that topic and consider the approaches to determining location. 1. Tower Triangulation By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple antenna towers, a general location of a phone can be roughly determined to an accuracy of 200-1000 meters.  The more towers involved, the more accurate the location. 2. GPS Using Global Positioning Satellites is more accurate than using cell towers, but it takes longer to find the satellites, it uses more battery, and it won't well indoors.  For geo-fencing applications, like those provided by Placecast and Digby, cell towers are often used to determine if the consumer is nearing a "fence" then switches to GPS to determine the actual crossing of the fence. 3. WiFi Triangulation WiFi triangulation is usually more accurate than using towers just because there are so many more WiFi access points (i.e. radios in routers) around. The position of each WiFi AP needs to be recorded in a database and used in the calculations, which is what Skyhook has been doing since 2008.  Another advantage to this method is that works well indoors, although it usually requires additional WiFi beacons to get the accuracy down to 5-10 meters.  Companies like ZuluTime, Aisle411, and PointInside have been perfecting this approach for retailers like Meijer, Walgreens, and HomeDepot. Keep in mind that a mobile phone doesn't have to connect to the WiFi network in order for it to be located.  The WiFi radio in the phone only needs to be on.  Even when not connected, WiFi radios talk to each other to prepare for a possible connection. 4. Hybrid Approaches Naturally the most accurate approach is to combine the approaches described above.  The more available data points, the greater the accuracy.  Companies like ShopKick like to add in acoustic triangulation using the phone's microphone, and NearBuy can use video analytics to increase accuracy. 5. Magnetic Fields The latest approach, and this one is really new, takes a page from the animal kingdom.  As you've probably learned from guys like Marlin Perkins, some animals use the Earth's magnetic fields to navigate.  By recording magnetic variations within a store, then matching those readings with ones from a consumer's phone, location can be accurately determined.  At least that's the approach IndoorAtlas is taking, and the science seems to bear out.  It works well indoors, and doesn't require retailers to purchase any additional hardware.  Keep an eye on this one.

• Authorship tag or Customer reviews to enhance click-through rate

  I was first using authorship tag on all the pages of my website. That gave me a pretty decent improvement in the click through rate. However, I have recently added ratings on my website, i.e. all my pages are being rated by the readers and the same has been made available to Google via rich snippets. The result being the image of the author from the google search results has been removed. It shows ratings given by the customers and just writes the name of the author. What will be its impact on the click-through rate ? Is it OK to have the ratings or should I switch back to only authorship tag as I was using in the past ? Please comment if I am unclear in asking my problem. Thanks :)

• How do I get adobe flash working in Chrome or Chromium on Ringtail?

  I have recently upgraded to Ringtail and for some reason flash isn't working on either Chrome or Chromium. It works in firefox but I prefer Chrome as my browser so switching to firefox when a website containing flash appears is a bit annoying. According to just about every source, flash it built into Chrome and should just work even on Ubuntu. I tried removing chrome and reinstalling it, but the problem persists. I've checked about://plugins and flash is enabled. • Uninstall, Disable, or Remove Windows 7 Media Center

  Although Windows 7 Media Center has improved a lot over previous versions of Windows, but you might want to disable it for different reasons. Here we take a look at a couple of methods to get rid of it. There are a variety of reasons you might want to disable Windows 7 Media Center. Maybe you own a business and don’t want it to run on the machines. Or perhaps you don’t use it at all and just don’t want it around. Turn Off WMC Using Programs and Features Probably the easiest way to get rid of it on all versions of Windows 7 is to open Control Panel and select Programs and Features. This method is similar to disabling Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7. On the left hand panel click on Turn Windows Features on or off. Scroll down to Media Features and expand the folder. Then Uncheck Windows Media Center… You’ll get a verification message making sure you want to disable it, click Yes. Then the box next to Windows Media Center will be empty…click OK. Wait while WMC is disabled… To complete the process a reboot is required. After getting back from the restart, the WMC icon will be gone and there won’t be any way to launch it. Re-enable WMC If you want to re-enable it, just go back in and recheck it. Again you’ll need to wait while it’s configured, but when it’s done, a restart is not required.   Disable Media Center Using Group Policy Note: This process uses Group Policy Editor which is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Click on the Start menu and type gpedit.msc into the Search box and hit Enter. Now navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Media Center. Double-click on Do not allow Windows Media Center to run. Then select the radio button next to Enabled, click OK and close out of Group Policy Editor. Now if a user tries to launch WMC they will get the following message. Conclusion If you’re not a fan of Windows Media Center or want to disable it for whatever reason, the process is simple and there are a couple of ways you can do it. WMC is not included in Starter or Home Basic versions of Windows 7. If you’re new to Windows 7 Media Center, you might want to check out our guide on getting started and setting up live TV. • Bastion on ubuntu 12.04 64bit black screen

  I just downloaded the Humblebundle with bastion. After installing Bastion and starting it up, only a blank screen shows the the mouse arrow. I can here the sound fine. I read a message board that recommended starting it with -windowed -x 1280 -y 720 which does not work. I am on ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, with a intel 3000 integrated graphics card. Does anyone know how I can get this to work properly? thank you.

Ping.eu is a free service which would let you test various aspects related to networks which would typically be pain inducing doing it on your own. For seasoned network professional having a MAC address of their own instead of a name :) this might not be that useful. However for a layperson like me this an invaluable resource. • Getting error-'General Error Mounting Filesystems' while installing ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 starter edition

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my HP Mini 110 with 2 gb of ram and Windows 7 starter edition. However, when I try to boot from USB, the Ubuntu screen loads and then shows the message-'General Error Mounting Filesystem'. I have to press Ctrl+D to reboot, and the same process starts again until I remove my pen drive. I have tried making a Live USB from UNetBootin and the software Ubuntu suggests, downloaded from pendrivelinux.com. However, Ubuntu still won't load. I am new to the Ubuntu world and don't know what to do, please help.

  I recently installed ubuntu 12.04 on my asus N55SF, which runs nvidia geforce gt 555m and an integrated graphics, via optimus but after installation i found no such thing on ubuntu. i went o nvidia website and installed the driver from there(ver 259.59 i guess) after reboot, i was stuck at 640x480 resolution and my card was still undetected i reinstalled ubuntu but this time i installed bumblebee, but the system settings still shows the graphics as 'unknown' i dont know whether the driver has been installed or not, but from the 'unknown' i figure its not there. when i run sudo nvidia-settings i get this msg "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server." however i can run the settings page by sudo nvidia-settins -c :8 i just want to know why ubuntu hasnt still detected the gpu? is it because bumblebee disables it? and i forgot one v important thing..I AM A NOOB :(

• Black & White screen after resuming from Suspend [Ubuntu 12.04]

  I recently thought of giving Linux a try with Ubuntu 12.04. So far I managed to figure out how to troubleshoot and fix some of my older issues. But i wasnt able to find a problem similar to mine. The issue is, whenever my laptop starts up after suspend, the screen stays black for a short while. then after that comes a black and white 8-bit kinda screen with nothing else. I am not sure if it's an issue with the graphic card or not. because I am able to write my login password and proceed normally if i wait till this screen shows up...after that everything is displayed normally. is there a fix for this?

• SQL Saturday #39 in NYC

  This weekend I will be speaking at the NYC SQL Saturday . The whole event was supposed to be BI focused but now the schedule shows a lot of non BI stuff as well. I will be presenting SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Programming , one of my favorite topics to present on. It seems that the event if fully booked. I'll be coming down on my bike taking scenic roads through MA and CT so I will not make it to the speaker dinner.
