  Amazon recently introduced a free tier for its cloud offering. I signed up for AWS and while signing up for the free tier of S3, i found this As part of AWS Free Usage Tier, you can get started with Amazon S3 for free. Upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 5 GB of Amazon S3 storage, 20,000 Get Requests, 2,000 Put Requests, 15GB of bandwidth in and 15GB of bandwidth out each month for one year. source:aws.amazon.com , emphasis mine. 20,000 GET requests & 2000 puts mean , 20,000 page views(max) and 2000 file uploads per month. Isn't that lower than what App Engine offers 43,200,000 requests per day.Am I missing some thing, please help.

  I am new to Linux and I am having issues installing. I have tried multiple versions and all seem to give me the same issue. The LiveCD worked and I used it to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. Here's a few screen shots of what I get. I am currently trying to install most the most recent version of Ubuntu.   I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why?   Ok I am in the process of backing up my film collection to a NAS and I wanted to automate this as much as possible as I have to work at the same time. I am trying to setup a daily dump of ISO's ready to be converted overnight. I would like to do this as a cron job using gnomevfs. I have been able to connect and do an ls command successfully with gnomevfs-ls smb://user:WORKGROUP:password@media-centre/videos/ but I am having trouble setting up a mv command from a local folder to the same shared folder keep getting the Usage: gnomevfs-mv <from> <to> quote which isn't particularly informative ;) any ideas?

• How to remove the graphical user interface?

  Ok my question is that, I want to run a heavy application, on a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox) with just 2 GB RAM (Windows 7 32Bit Host has 4 GB, 3.5 GB effective). Initially I thought of installing Ubuntu Server 12.04.1, which doesn't come with a GUI, so I thought it would be efficient in performance, but I have only Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop. My question is, is it possible to remove the GUI parts in Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (Not Server), keeping only the core OS, after installation in a virtual machine? Or, is there anyway to improve the performance of the OS? If you need more information, I am ready to provide. I don't want the GUI or anything, even a small terminal window is fine for me, I can access files through FTP.

• Why does F. Wagner consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

  In his article on Virtual Environments (a part of his VFSM specification method) Ferdinand Wagner describes some new ways of thinking about Boolean Algebra as a software design tool. On page 4 of this PDF article, when describing operators in his system he says this: Control statements need Boolean values. Hence, the names must be used to produce Boolean results. To achieve this we want to combine them together using Boolean operators. There is nothing wrong with usage of AND and OR operators with their Boolean meaning. For instance, we may write: DI_ON OR AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1 AND TIMER_OVER to express the control situation: digital input is on or analog input is larger than 8.1 and timer is over. We cannot use the NOT operator, because the result of the Boolean negation makes sense only for true Boolean values. The result of, for instance, NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1) would be ambiguous. If "AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1" is acceptable, why would he consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

• Some websites are not opening in any web browser (firefox/chrome). What should I do? [closed]

  Some websites are not opening in my system. I am using Ubuntu 12.10. Earlier, when I was using Ubuntu 10.10,11.10 there was no such issue. The problem was started in ubuntu 12.04, but it remained the same even after formatting and installing ubuntu 12.10. I have tried Firefox as well as Chromium and I am sure the issue is not with the browser. same websites are opening perfectly with Windows. Google, Twitter and Ubuntu related websites are running perfect. Other websites like www.downrightnow.com, easy-mantra.com, facebook.com, sourceforge.net are not opening. Installed dual boot with win xp. Ubuntu 12.10 is 64 bit.   My Ubuntu get into error when I try to mount one of my internal disks and it gives this error message: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 3). Failed to mount '/dev/sda7': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. pls advise how to solve above error ,Many thanks to you in advance.

Since the site doesn't exist yet, and since this is my first endeavor of this sort, I'm not really sure how much bandwidth to estimate to begin with. We will be using Linux, Apache, PHP and Mysql. The content will be generated dynamically. There will be images as part of the site design but user's will also upload images that will be displayed and documents that will be stored for download at later times. We'd like to be able to support 500,000 page loads per month with estimated image loads being about two to three times that.

• OpenGL: Filtering/antialising textures in a 2D game

  I'm working on a 2D game using OpenGL 1.5 that uses rather large textures. I'm seeing aliasing effects and am wondering how to tackle those. I'm finding lots of material about antialiasing in 3D games, but I don't see how most of that applies to 2D games - e.g. antisoptric filtering seems to make no sense, FSAA doesn't sound like the best bet either. I suppose this means texture filtering is my best option? Right now I'm using bilinear filtering, I think: glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameterf(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); From what I've read, I'd have to use mipmaps to use trilinear filtering, which would drive memory usage up, so I'd rather not. I know the final sizes of all the textures when they are loaded, so can't I somehow size them correctly at that point? (Using some form of texture filtering).

  Hi, I have the following configuration: CPU: amd athlon 64bit Motherboard: Phoenix with awardBIOS v6.0 APIC mode = disabled Video card: GeForce 5500 Sound card: soundblaster live 24bit RAM: 1.5GB Partitions: ext3 32GB where I installed Ubuntu. Swap 500MB. 180GB Fat32 unmounted. contains data only. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and used the "Additional driver" program to get the nVidia proprietary drivers. The system works for sometime and randomly freezes. The mouse and keyboard are not responding and I am not able to do a SSH. The only solution is pressing the power button. I tried Kubuntu 10.10 and 32/64-bits versions as well. There is nothing in the logs to suggest what the reason might be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I'm currently looking for a hosting company that can provide a very solid service with a 100% SLA. In the search both cloud hosting and managed dedicated hosting have come up. (I'd rather not manage the server myself as I'm still rather new to Linux.) I'm not sure if phrasing this as a "which is best" would make sense, but what advantages does cloud hosting have over dedicated server hosting? I need a reliable service above all else, and some elements of the application to be hosted will be relatively CPU intensive, although those spikes in CPU usage will be sporadic, so the hosting needs to be able to deal with that.

  Im programming on a turn based war-game for some years now (along with the engine) and Im having quite a hard time at figuring out what the games server architecture should look like, since most game server architecture articles I found focus either on FPS oder MMOGs, which doesn't really fit since I want many matches with 1- 16 players on my server, with each match being played in turn based mode. My chief concern is memory usage, since the most basic approach of loading every game that is being played completely into RAM should be quite inefficient, so is there a suitable strategy for selecting only the needed bits and loading them? Another question I got is how to design the threading on the server, since I think using only a single thread could be a problem due to the fact that the game or part of it might have to be loaded from the database. I would be very happy if you could share your knowledge or point me to material on this topic.

  (I was encouraged to ask this question here.) In C, we say: GCC compiles foo.c. For interpreters (such as Lua), what is the equivalent verb? The Lua interpreter ____ foo.lua. When I write instructions for users of my Lua script, I often say: Run the interpreter on foo.lua. I think this can be said more succinctly: Interpret (or Translate) foo.lua. but that sounds awkward for some reason (perhaps because I'm unsure of its correctness). I can't really say compile because users may confuse it with the usage of the Lua compiler when I actually mean the Lua interpreter.

• Asus Eee PC 701 4G hangs on boot

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Install Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?
