• MSAccess Change Date Value Before Validation

  In a grid I have a date/time field where I would like the user to be able to type in short-hand formats for dates and times. For example, if they type in "435p" and then focus off of the cell they get the message "The value you entered isn't valid for this field.". Instead, I want to trap a pre-validationevent and change it to "4:35pm" for them. What event can I use? I've tried: LostFocus & BeforeUpdate: too late (validation fires before event) Dirty & OnChange: too early (they haven't left the cell yet) Or is there a way to turn off the native validation rule that is checking for date formats?

  hi all, I have a requirement to come up with a time line chart and a few more controls on a single page[with rich ui]. I have short listed Flex, JSF[apache trinidad], html5, gwt these technologies. None of them provide timeline charts on their own. I am looking at other options such as using third party libraries. The chart should have drill down capabilities as well. Right now, I have imzip.zip which has three txt files: a.txt b.txt c.txt When I try to load imzip.zip using: http://pastebin.com/m1d974990 It loads the files alphabetically. In this case: a.txt b.txt c.txt However, I would like to be able to have the class load on different variables such as by size, date or simply random. The problem is I have no idea how I would go about modifying the class to fit my needs. I would really appreciate your help! :D

  Hello: In short, currently I am using the following code to pull records from multiple tables in a Sqlite Db and insert them in a single combobox ($SearchBar): set SrchVals1 [db eval {SELECT DISTINCT Stitle From Subcontract Order By Stitle ASC}] set SrchVals2 [db eval {... set SrchVals3 ... set SrchValsALL [concat $SrchVals1 $SrchVals2 $SrchVals3] $SearchBar configure -value $SrchValsAll For the variable "SrchVals1", I am trying to figure out a way to concatenate the text "Sub: " to each individual record in SrchVals1. For example, if SrchVals1 shows the following records in the combobox: First Title Second Title Third Title I would like to concatenate so that the records in the combobox look like this: Sub: First Title Sub: Second Title Sub: Third Title I understand that I might have to use a foreach statement; however, I am having no luck writing one that adds "Sub: " in front of each record, as opposed to one. This seems like something that should be pretty easy, but I cannot seem to figure it out. Does anyone know how I can achieve these results? Thank you, DFM

• Is it a good idea to define a variable in a local block for a case of a switch statement?

  I have a rather long switch-case statement. Some of the cases are really short and trivial. A few are longer and need some variables that are never used anywhere else, like this: switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: { int specialVariable = 5; // Do something complex with specialVariable } break; } The alternative would be to declare that variable before going into the switch like this: int specialVariable = 5; switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: // Do something complex with specialVariable break; } This can get rather confusing since it is not clear to which case the variable belongs and it uses some unnecessary memory. However, I have never seen this usage anywhere else. Do you think it is a good idea to declare variables locally in a block for a single case?

• Which "platform" should we use for a notifier-component?

  Hi all We need to develop a notifier component. What it will do, is to scan a database at given intervals (say, every 15th minute), to see if any notifications needs to be sent out. We're running on Windows, and so we've been looking into either a Windows Service or the Windows Task Scheduler. Our biggest concern is the robustness of our implementation. If it, for some reason, crashes, can it be auto-restarted the next interval? Can we use custom logging logic, to take care of crashes? I'd like an educated guess on what to use here :) Feel free to say if you need additional info, to make such a guess.. Props will be given if someone could make a short listing of the pros n cons of a windows service vs. the windows task scheduler. Also, it should be noted, that we aren't set on either of these, so if you have any alternatives, please, do post away. Thanks in advance :)

I have a dynamic dns account where I map my machine's dynamic IP to an address say, www.xxx.yyy.net Now, I have registered another short domain name say www.yyy.com, the hosting is on a linux server. Now, my machine is actually a webserver which runs .net website which can be accessed by www.xxx.yyy.net I need my homepage(index.php) in my www.yyy.com handle the redirection in a way that the pages to be loaded from www.xxx.yyy.net/.... but it should look in the browser as www.yyy.com/... Is there any way to do this using php?

For example: for (std::vector<EnumServiceInformation>::const_iterator currentService = services.begin(); currentService != services.end(); currentService++) However, I've heard many arguments for 80 character wide limits. I'm assuming this 80 character limit comes from the traditional command prompt, which is typically 80 characters wide. However -- most of us are working on something much better than a typical command prompt, and I feel that using an 80 character limit encourages use of variable names that are far too short and do not describe what the variable is used for. What is a reasonable limit for a new project with no existing coding width standard?

  This is a methodology question from a freelancer, with a corollary on MySQL.. Is there a way to migrate from an old dedicated server to a new one without losing any data in-between - and with no downtime? In the past, I've had to lose MySQL data between the time when the new server goes up (i.e., all files transferred, system up and ready), and when I take the old server down (data still transferred to old until new one takes over). There is also a short period where both are down for DNS, etc., to refresh. Is there a way for MySQL/root to easily transfer all data that was updated/inserted between a certain time frame?

  Hello, i often work on private projects using the WinApi, and as you might know, it has thousands of named and typedefed structs like MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION. I will stick to this one in my question, what still is preferred, or better when you want to name a variable of this type. Is there some kind of style guide for this case? For example if i need that variable for the VirtualQueryEx function. Some ideas: MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memoryBasicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memory_basic_information; Just use the name of the struct non capitalized and with or without the underlines. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION basicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION information; Short form? MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION mbi; I often see this style, using the abbreviation of the struct name. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION buffer; VirtualQueryEx defines the third parameter lpBuffer (where you pass the pointer to the struct), so using this name might be an idea, too. Cheers

  I am trying to write a simple program, preferably in C, that will watch a given directory. Whenever a process accesses that directory, I just want to print out the name of that process. It seems simple, but I am coming up short for solutions on MSDN. Does anyone know which library calls I will need for this, or any helpful advice? I have considered repeatedly querying for what processes have handles on the given directory and just watching for additions to that list.This approach just seems very intensive and I am hoping there is an easier way.   The need has arisen within our organisation to monitor (on a daily basis) where our site appears (both organic and PPC) on the page 1 of Google. Also where a key competitor appears. For certain key words. In the immediate short term a colleague is doing this by hitting Google manually and jotting down the results. Yep. It occurs to us we can write a script (e.g. using C#) to do this. I know Analytics will tell us an awful lot but it doesn't note the competitor's position, plus I don't think it has other data we want. Question is, is there an existing basic tool which does this (for free, I guess)? And if we write it ourselves, where to start and are there obvious pitfalls to avoid (for example can Google detect and block automated requests?)

• How to manage large amounts of delegates and usercallbacks in C# async http library

  I'm coding a .NET library in C# for communicating with XBMC via its JSON RPC interface using HTTP. I coded and released a preliminary version but everything is done synchronously. I then recoded the library to be asynchronous for my own purposes as I was/am building an XBMC remote for WP7. I now want to release the new async library but want to make sure it's nice and tidy before I do. Due to the async nature a user initiates a request, supplies a callback method that matches my delegate and then handles the response once it's been received. The problem I have is that within the library I track a RequestState object for the lifetime of the request, it contains the http request/response as well as the user callback etc. as member variables, this would be fine if only one type of object was coming back but depending on what the user calls they may be returned a list of songs or a list of movies etc. My implementation at the moment uses a single delegate ResponseDataRecieved which has a single parameter which is a simple Object - As this has only be used by me I know which methods return what and when I handle the response I cast said object to the type I know it really is - List, List etc. A third party shouldn't have to do this though - The delegate signature should contain the correct type of object. So then I need a delegate for every type of response data that can be returned to the third party - The specific problem is, how do I handle this gracefully internally - Do I have a bunch of different RequestState objects that each have a different member variable for the different delegates? That doesn't "feel" right. I just don't know how to do this gracefully and cleanly.

Sometimes when I try to get a dynamically generated page it returns its actual content, but other times (with another parameter) all I get is a short sequence of \t,\r and \n. How could I track what's going on on the different cases in order to find where is the bug? • How does one record audio from a Javascript based webapp?

  I'm trying to write a web-app that records WAV files (eg: from the user's microphone). I know Javascript alone can not do this, but I'm interested in the least proprietary method to augment my Javascript with. My targeted browsers are Firefox for PC and Mac (so no ActiveX). Please share your experiences with this. I gather it can be done with Flash (but not as a WAV formated file). I gather it can be done with Java (but not without code-signing). Are these the only options? @dominic-mazzoni I'd like to record the file as a WAV because because the purpose of the webapp will be to assemble a library of good quality short soundbites. I estimate upload will be 50 MB, which is well worth it for the quality. The app will only be used on our intranet. Are there cases where the primitive would be auto-boxed instead, and reference identity comparisons are performed? (which would all then be false!)

  Hello guys, I am working on a larger GUI with Java and I am becoming angry on Layout Managers. I have a "Settings-Panel" with a variable number of JComponents in it (Labels, Buttons, JSpinners, JSliders,...). I just want the following: JLabel <- JComponent JLabel <- JComponent JLabel <- JComponent ... My Panel has a size of 500px, so that there is enough space for a lot of components. Unfortunatly the GridLayout always stretches the size of the Components to the whole Panel, even if I set a MaximumSize for every component. It looks stupid if there are only two buttons each with a height of 250px. I tried flow Layout, but i cannot figure out a way to make new lines properly. I tried BoxLayout.Y_AXIS, but the Components are always centered, and Label and Component are not in the same line. Does anybody know a good and short way with LayoutManagers to handle this properly?

  Occasionally I read news articles that mention about some computer models that computer scientists use to predict winners of some sporting events or the odds for betting which I think there must be a mathematical model behind it. I never bothered to think twice even though I am a "pseudo computer scientist" myself. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup just underway, and since I am also a "pseudo football/soccer player" myself, I just started to wonder about these calculations algorithms. For example, I know one factor is determining the strength of opponents, so that a win against a strong opponent can count more than a win against a weak opponent. But it now kind of gets in a circular loop, or at least how does one determine the strength of a team in the first place, before that team can be considered strong or weak? If it's based on a historical data then there's no way that could be accurate, because those players of the past are no longer on the fields so their impact is none (except maybe if they become coaches like Maradona) Anyway, long question short, if you're happen to be working in this field or have some knowledge, please shed some lights.
