• Freeware Programmer Calculator

  There have been lots of times in the past where a good programmer-oriented calculator would've saved me a lot of time. Lately, I've been doing quite a lot of bit manipulation, and having to do build/run to debug my calculations feels really slow. I've looked for something like this in the past, but found nothing that worked very well. The only thing that comes close is this one from AnalogX, but I can't get it to work or really do anything on my vista box which is where I'm doing most of my work at the moment. (btw - please send comments about my vista usage here;). Anyway, I'm looking for something for simple calculations using a C-like syntax with support for proper precenedce, operators, etc. Bonus points for cross-platform. The python interpreter was a great idea and is totally cross-platform. For windows only SpeQ is amazing. Thanks for the suggestions.

• Which is more user friendly: TortoiseGIT or TortoiseHG?

  I have been experimenting with using Mercurial and TortoiseHG to track my work when I am working remotely (with a slow VPN I don't want to commit to SVN unless I have something that works). I have found TortoiseHG a bit hard to use - or at least it often doesn't work the way I expect it to, so I am considering switching to GIT and TortoiseGIT. (For example I had problems rolling back source code to an earlier version and I still don't know what I did wrong) My question whether they have a similar level of functionality / user friendliness or whether one is better than the other. What has your experience been?

• What are modern and old compilers written in?

  As a compiler, other than an interpreter, only needs to translate the input and not run it the performance of itself should be not that problematic as with an interpreter. Therefore, you wouldn't write an interpreter in, let's say Ruby or PHP because it would be far too slow. However, what about compilers? If you would write a compiler in a scripting language maybe even featuring rapid development you could possibly cut the source code and initial development time by halv, at least I think so. To be sure: With scripting language I mean interpreted languages having typical features that make programming faster, easier and more enjoyable for the programmer, usually at least. Examples: PHP, Ruby, Python, maybe JavaScript though that may be an odd choice for a compiler What are compilers normally written in? As I suppose you will respond with something low-level like C, C++ or even Assembler, why? Are there compilers written in scripting languages? What are the (dis)advantages of using low or high level programming languages for compiler writing?

• Core Data performance deleteObject and save managed object context

  I am trying to figure out the best way to bulk delete objects inside of my Core Data database. I have some objects with a parent/child relationship. At times I need to "refresh" the parent object by clearing out all of the existing children objects and adding new ones to Core Data. The 'delete all' portion of this operation is where I am running into trouble. I accomplish this by looping through the children and calling deleteObject for each one. I have noticed that after the NSManagedObjectContext:Save call following all of the deleteObject calls is very slow when I am deleting 15,000 objects. How can I speed up this call? Are there things happening during the save operation that I can be aware of and avoid by setting parameters different or setting up my model another way? I've noticed that memory spikes during this operation as well. I really just want to "delete * from". Thanks.

  I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development. I hope veteran programmers would give me some suggestions. Thanks!

• IPC::Open3 Fails Running Under Apache

  I have a module that uses IPC::Open3 (or IPC::Open2, both exhibit this problem) to call an external binary (bogofilter in this case) and feed it some input via the child-input filehandle, then reads the result from the child-output handle. The code works fine when run in most environments. However, the main use of this module is in a web service that runs under Apache 2.2.6. And under that environment, I get the error: Cannot fdopen STDOUT: Invalid argument This only happens when the code runs under Apache. Previously, the code constructed a horribly complex command, which included a here-document for the input, and ran it with back-ticks. THAT worked, but was very slow and prone to breaking in unique and perplexing ways. I would hate to have to revert to the old version, but I cannot crack this.

  I have form which has many tabs. Every tab has many controls textboxes, comboboxes, datagrids and e .t.c. I bind form to one data source in such way this.DataContext=MyClassInstance But with this way my form opening very slow. about one minute. When I comment above code, form opens very quickly. All My controls I bound to the class properties in XAML. Please tell me the way to bind every tab when it's activated, or bind controls in background thread or any other idea which can help me to speed up my form. Thanks in advance.

• Implementing google dashboard type interface in asp.net

  I'm looking at implementing a Google IG type dashboard in a .net app. There are a number of options I've found to do this, and i'm trying to establish what is going to be the best to use, in terms of speed, versatility etc. So far the options I am looking at are either to use asp.net webparts and .net Ajax, this would make it quicker to build, but I'm concerned this is going to make the application bulky and slow, or using JQuery, and either .net MVC or Webforms, to custom build an interface. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the best option may be, or any options I may have missed? All I want to do here is to allow users to customise a dashboard with a number of components (which will be user controls). I do also have access to Telerik controls, but I'm not sure if they would be any use here.

I want to ask if there is a way to avoid add the path every time the path is redrawn? Also, the way the draw method is set up, the drawing gets a bit slow and choopy after a few seconds. • Email sent by ActionMailer is taking six hours to deliver mail.

  So I have been asked to help maintain a website that uses Ruby on Rails. Now, let me just say I've been programming Ruby for awhile but I am still new to Rails. The first problem brought to my attention is how the activation email takes about six hours to arrive. It would be one thing if the email was not being sent due to errors but it is being send correctly, just slow. Also the server this is running on is also its own SMTP. I checked how the email was being formatted before calling the setup_email method and everything looks okay. I even dug into the ActionMailer lib and read through the files there and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. So what is most likely causing the email to take six hours to deliver?

  When creating functions that use strsplit, vector inputs do not behave as desired, and sapply needs to be used. This is due to the list output that strsplit produces. Is there a way to vectorize the process - that is, the function produces the correct element in the list for each of the elements of the input? • Fastest way to call a COM objects method without using a RCW

  I'm trying to find the cleanest and fastest way for calling a COM objects methods. I was using a RCW for the object but every time a new version of the third party COM object comes out its GUID changes which then renders the RCW useless, so I had to change and start using Type mytype = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("MyCOMApp.Application"); so that every time a new version of the COM object comes out I don't have to recomplie and redeploy my app. At the moment I am using refelection like mytype.InvokeMemeber but I feel it is so slow compared to just calling the RCW. How does everyone else tackle the problem of changing 3rd party COM object versions, but still maintaining the speed of a RCW?

• Drawing and Animating with UIView or CALayer?

  hello, i am trying to implement a graph which a uiview draws. There are 3 UIViews to animate a left/right slide. The problem is, that i can't cancel the UIView animation. So I replaced the UIViews by CALayer. Now, the question is if CALayer is appicable for this? Is it normal to draw on a CALayer like this? And why is a CALayer so slow when I manipulate the frame properties. CGRect frame = curve.frame; frame.origin.x -= diffX; [curve setFrame:frame]; Is there a alternativ? P.S. I am a german guy.   I have a query that runs in less than 1 ms: SELECT product_to_value.category AS category, features.name AS featurename, featurevalues.name AS valuename FROM product_to_value, features, featurevalues WHERE product_to_value.category IN(:int, :bla, :bla1) AND product_to_value.feature = features.int AND product_to_value.value = featurevalues.int LIMIT 10 However, when I combine it with another query using INTERSECT, the query now takes more than 250ms: SELECT product_to_value.category AS category, features.name AS featurename, featurevalues.name AS valuename FROM product_to_value, features, featurevalues WHERE product_to_value.category IN(:int, :bla, :bla1) AND product_to_value.feature = features.int AND product_to_value.value = featurevalues.int INTERSECT SELECT product_to_value.category AS category, features.name AS featurename, featurevalues.name AS valuename FROM product_to_value, features, featurevalues WHERE product_to_value.category IN(:int, :bla, :bla1) AND product_to_value.feature = features.int AND product_to_value.value = featurevalues.int LIMIT 10 This can't be right.   I am looking for a lightweight php framework with the following qualifications: ability to write my own sql queries ( i simply don't trust CakePHP like method where the framework does your sql for you); ability to integrate Jquery easily; built-in templating, or relatively easy to introduce Smarty (or another templating engine) into it; MVC; fast Any advice/comparison? i have looked into CodeIgniter, Symfony and CakePHP so far. Symfony is slow, and CakePHP is too inaccessible ...so far my choice would be CodeIgniter. I played with it a bit, but i would like to hear more experiences. I am looking for a framework that will "enforce" organization of my app in a logical way - MVC seems like a great choice.

  Hi Folks, I have an application with client server architecture. The client use Java Web Start with Java Swing / AWT and the sert uses HTTP server / Servlet with Tomcat. The communication is made from the serialization of objects, create a ObjectOutput serializes a byte array and send to the server respectively called the ObjectInputStream and deserializes. The application follows communicating correctly to a certain time of concurrency where starting to show error "SocketException read timeout". The erro happens when the server invoke the method ObjectInputStream.getObject() in my servlet doPost method. The tomcat will come slow and the errors start to decrease server response time until the crash time where i must restart the server and after everything works. Someone went through this problem ?

• Use sed to replace first 8 and last 4 pipes on every line in a file

  Here's the situation, I have a text file that is pipe-delimited and one of fields contains pipe characters. I already have a sed script that will change it to be tab-delimited, but the problem is it's terribly slow. It will replace the first occurrence of a pipe 8 times, then replace the last occurrence of a pipe 4 times. I'm hoping there's a quicker way to do what I need. Any thoughts would be appreciated. • Why isn't my assets folder being installed on emulator?

  Where are my assets being installed to? I utilize an assets folder in my new app. I have two files in the folder. When I install my app on the emulator, I cannot access my assets, and furthermore I cannot see them on the emulator filesystem. Extracted my apk and confirmed the assets folder exists: $ ls -ltr assets/ total 16 -rw-rw-r--. 1 brad brad 1050 2010-05-20 00:33 schema-DashDB.sql -rw-rw-r--. 1 brad brad 9216 2010-05-20 00:33 dash.db On the emulator, no assets folder: # pwd /data/data/com.gtosoft.dash # ls -l drwxr-xr-x system system 2010-05-20 00:46 lib # I just want to package a pre-built database with my app and then open it to obtain data when needed. Just tried it on my Moto Droid, unable to access/open the DB, just like the emulator: DBFile=/data/data/com.gtosoft.dash/assets/dash.db Building the DB on the fly from a schema file is out of the question because its such a slow process (about 5-10 statements per second is all I get for throughput).

• Sound Effects/Manipulation?

  Hello, I am creating an android app that basically records an applies an "Effect" on the audio track then plays it back. I got my app to record an play back but I am stuck an not sure where do go from here. I have been Googling for days now trying to find a open source audio library or some way to change the audio after I record it. I currently have it setup to play back using SoundPool an I't lets me speed up an slow down the audio. • Saving selected rows in a jqGrid while paging

  I have a jqGrid with which users will select records. A large number of records could be selected across multiple pages. The selected rows seem to get cleared out when the user pages through the data. Is it up to the developer to manually track the selected rows in an array? I'm fine doing this, but I'm not sure what the best way is. I'm not sure I want to be splicing an array whenever any number of records are selected as that seems like it could really slow things down. My end goal is to have a jQueryUI dialog that, when closed, while store all the selected rows so I can post it to the server. Insight, questions, comments; all are appreciated! Note: added aspnetmvc tag only because this is for an MVC app

• Mysql Sub Select Query Optimization

  I'm running a query daily to compile stats - but it seems really inefficient. This is the Query: SELECT a.id, tstamp, label_id, (SELECT author_id FROM b WHERE b.tid = a.id ORDER BY b.tstamp DESC LIMIT 1) AS author_id FROM a, b WHERE (status = '2' OR status = '3') AND category != 6 AND a.id = b.tid AND (b.type = 'C' OR b.type = 'R') AND a.tstamp1 BETWEEN {$timestamp_start} AND {$timestamp_end} ORDER BY b.tstamp DESC LIMIT 500 This query seems to run really slow. Apologies for the crap naming - I've been asked to not reveal the actual table names. The reason there is a sub select is because the outer select gets one row from the table a and it gets a row from table b. But also need to know the latest author_id from table b as well, so I run a subselect to return that one. I don't want to run another select inside a php loop - as that is also inefficient. It works correctly - I just need to find a much faster way of getting this data set.
