• How can I quickly change display settings from dual monitor to single monitor on laptop?

  I have my laptop (running Windows XP SP3) at work hooked up to an external monitor. Whenever I unplug the external monitor (time to go home!) I have to manually change the display settings. This takes time and involves a lot of clicks. Is there a way to automate changing these settings? I'm thinking of a hotkey solution or a little application that I can start with Launchy to toggle between two profiles. I use the MultiMon tool for "extending" the taskbar to the second monitor - will I have to give that up?

• Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue?

  If I set my Windows 7 account to automatically logon so I don't have to type a password, and I don't have to click my username on the logon screen, I heard it's a security risk. From Windows 7 Auto Login: Although I don’t personally recommend this, there are some people out there who don’t want to bother with using a password to protect their Windows user account. Of course, using a password in Windows isn’t required, only suggested. But even if you don’t fill one in, you still have to click your user icon to start the login process. An easier way - although again much less secure - is to enable auto-logins for your Windows PC. This is possible in Windows 7, as it was in prior versions, but it takes a little finagling to do so. (And for good reason, darn it.) What is risky about it besides people being able to logon locally? Does it make it easier for hackers to logon remoately?

  Hi guys - I got all of a sudden a number of strange feedback messages from my sites feedback form its where normally users would come and enter feedback and then I would review it on an admin panel. • Moving from Analogue PBX to digital VoIP?

  I don't even know if this belongs here?. If not, do let me know. So we have an analogue Alkatel PABX system in our little office. We have extensions, direct lines and PBX lines. We are trying to move to a more digital/flexible way of handling the phones and I've heard good things about FreeSwitch. I have zero knowledge about it. My biggest question is how would one handle existing phone lines with such a system. Surely there must be a way to make and receive calls from outside. Just a help in the right direction would be fine. Thanks.

• Is it possible to use the MMM tool without virtual IP capability?

  We are on a host (Serverbeach) that does not support Virtual/floating IPs until you reserve at least a half-rack, which is just a little more than we are willing to spend per month right now. We do have 2 machines in one of their datacenters, and I am using these 2 machines right now in the Master-Master in Active-Passive Mode just like done by MMM -- http://mysql-mmm.org/. I have just set them up and I managing them manually, with manual switch on the Web frontend to tell it to connect to the correct (active) master. Is there any way to use MMM without virtual IPs? Any other comments on this setup?

  Hi all, Have a unique URL-rewriting situation in Apache. I need to be able to take a URL that starts with "\u002f[X]" or '\u002f[X]" Where X is the rest of some URL, and substitute the text "\u002fmeis2\u002f[X] I'm not sure how the Regex works in Apache -- I think it's the same as Perl 5? -- but even then I'm a little unsure how this would be done. My hunch is that it has to do with Regex grouping and then using $1 to pull the variable out, but I'm entirely unfamiliar with this process in Apache. Hoping someone can help -- thanks!

• IIS6 won't respond to a request for a JS file after accessing through subdomain

  I have a site running of www.mysite.com for example. There is a JS file I'm accessing: www.mysite.com/packages.js The first and subsequent times that I acccess that packages.js file causes no problems........until I access a sub-site like this: sub-site.mysite.com This naturally makes a request for that same packages.js....but the site hangs as it just keeps waiting and waiting for that JS file. Going back to the main site, the problem perists there. If I then rename packages.js to say packages2.js it then works in the same way. I can access the file on the main site but after I try and access it through a sub-site IIS then fails to respond to a request for that file. I realise this explanation is a little vague, but has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before? Thanks very much, James.

• How to enlarge a .PDF document to better show it in a Kindle 6"?

  I have a kindle 6". The problem is that I often read pdf files that are technical, therefore, it doesn't get converted very well to kindle's native format (for example, code blocks get messed, and things like that). When I view the pdf page, it's very small to read easily, so I have to rotate the screen to a horizontal position in order to see it better, but my page get divided. But some documents would be easy to read in vertical position if I had the chance to enlarge the font size a little bit in a external pdf editor, therefore enabling the reading in the vertical orientation. Has anybody had the same situation? Is there a solution for that?

• Uninstall Dell Wave

  The image we put on our company laptops includes the Dell Wave interface for Biometric log in. The Wave UI increases boot time by about 5 minutes (because it loads the fingerprint database(a feature I don't use)), so I'm trying to uninstall it, but with little success. There is no line-item in the Add/Remove Programs menu to formally delete it, nor is there a Service I can stop/remove to disable the Wave UI. I've tried looking online, but all I find instead are hits for Google Wave and virus-removal forums with HyjackThis dumps that include Dell Wave records. Any ideas?

• WPA Enterprise Wireless Bridge

  I live in college housing at a university with wifi available. unfortunately, my bedroom(where I'd like to place my PC) gets little to no reception. I'd like to place a router in the strongest spot and rebroadcast. I understand this can be done with DD-WRT/etc, but this particular network is WPA Enterprise with my own personal username/password. I can't find any concrete evidence that I can get my router to act as a repeater for this encryption. I don't currently have a router to test it on, otherwise this would be easy, I just don't want to buy a router if it will be worthless to me. Thanks for your help

• Creating a DVD-player compatible movie file

  I've created encoded a MPEG-4 file with mplayer and placed it on a DVD. The file is identified as RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 320 x 240, 25.00 fps, video: FFMpeg MPEG-4, audio: uncompressed PCM (stereo, 96000 Hz) I've tried playing it on a Samsung 1080p DVD player and the codecs were not recognised. There are no firmware upgrades available for my region (Romania). How should I pick the codecs to make sure that the files are readable by this DVD player? Update: The command line I used is similar to mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1 -oac copy -o movie.avi mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=2 -oac copy -o movie.avi

But instead of relying on forum anecdotes and advertisements, I call on the much wiser Super User beta community for some depth on this one. Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == wife). • External optical drive won't plug 'n play...sometimes.

  alright, I've looked a lot of different ways, but here goes. i have an external DVD burner that connects via USB and should be plug 'n play however sometimes when I connect it a message pops up requesting any CD or installation software it came with. It didn't come with any though. The confusing part is that if I wait a couple weeks and plug it in, then it works fine, but if I turn it off and back on the problem arises again. I've tried different computers, same problem. There's little to no customer support from the company, Ativa, and no drivers for the product. I'm hoping there's a registry trick for this. any help?

  Hi, What are the main guidelines to setting up a user account on a Linux machine for a web app? In my case it is a Rails application that does file management. First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider? I've heard of ACL's and SELinux, do I need to look into any of these to guaranty decent security for my simple web app? Any advice about this and anything not mentioned welcomed, Thanks, Max. • Converting a Full HD Inspiron 9400 laptop LCD to a standalone monitor

  Has anyone tried converting a LCD laptop monitor (17" full HD in this instance) to a stand-alone monitor? Are there any converters that one can buy to send DVI or VGA signals to the plug that is used to connect said LCD to the laptop motherboard? My laptop is the infamous Dell Inspiron 9400 (1705) model. They can have awesome monitors but if you check out ebay, there are many there for sale for little to nothing since the graphic cards fault unsually often in those machines. I'd like to be able to use the LCD and just scrap the rest.

• Is my disk hot or not?

  I am trying to figure out the temperature of my dedicated server's harddisk. For this purpose, I've downloaded HDTune to monitor the S.M.A.R.T. Status. The problem is that the current temperature for "C2 Temperature" is 73 degrees celsius, but the little thermometer on top of the window shows 27 degrees celsius. See this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/OGJhZGIxND Another monitoring software (Anfibia Reactor) shows similar behavior: Disk temperature is around 30 degrees, but it says that the disk is too hot. So, is my disk hot or not? Since this is a dedicated server, I can't just open the case and put a thumb on it.

• Does anyone use the L-Track trackball?

  I've been using the Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse for years. Now I'm looking for a trackball with a scroll wheel, larger and heavier ball, and preferably rollers instead of pins. It must be finger (not thumb) operated. The Kensington Expert Mouse is close, but from what I've read the scroll wheel is poorly implemented. They also switched from rollers to pins. I bought a Kensington Orbit Trackball and it's not bad but the scroll wheel is rough and the ball is the same as the marble mouse. I'm still looking for something better. I found the L-Trac and it looks good but there's little info on the web. Has anyone used it and can provide their impressions? Or can you point out another option?

  I'm trying to learn to rename files with the command line, and after browsing around a lot of pages I finally found a command that uppercases the first letter of a file, but the problem is that I want to understand the meaning of each command. The command is: for i in *; do new=`echo "$i" | sed -e 's/^./\U&/'`; mv "$i" "$new";done I understand the 'for' kinda... but not the 'echo' or '`' and especially the sed command. if someone has a little patience to explain the meaning of each thing that'd be awesome! • Using LDAP as auth method for git repositories

  I want to convince my boss that we should be using git for version control. He says, that it absolutely must authenticate users through our central LDAP server. I looked at the various solutions (gitweb, gitorious ... ) and couln't really find a definitive answer about whether they support LDAP authentication. The only solution I could find a little info on was a Apache+mod_ldap setting. But that would mean that the user authenticating on LDAP wouldn't necessarily be the same as the actual git user, right? (Not that this is a huge problem, but just something which would bug me.) So, what's the best way to authenticate git users via LDAP?

• Please recommend a good wifi to ethernet device.

  I need that because I am running a free version of iESX server and there is very little that I can configure in the OS itself. The server is sitting rather far from my router and I want to get rid of that cable. Now, I have seen a device which is allows to cut a cable with a transmitter and a receiver.   I have two networks and I want to join them. Only one has a router. The other is currently just a bunch of computers joined via a switch. So it looks a little like this: 1. Router + comp1 + comp2 + wireless ap 2. comp3 + comp4 + Netgear WG602 Is it possible to use the WG602 to connect to the WIFI of the main network (the one with the router) and connect via wire to the 2nd network - therefore allowing the computers on network 2 to use the router on network 1?

• Portable trackball mouse, any recommendations?

  Hi, I know there are other "mouse recommendation" questions, but I'm after some specific advise: Are there any useful and portable trackball mice? I'm particularly interested to hear if the recommendation has been used by the recommender! I have some space for a mouse on my travels, which are mainly on a train. A trackball mouse is the only real viable option as I don't really have room to "move around" a lot. I'm aware of the Genius Traveller 350: And some more crazy inventions: Anybody actually used any of these? Or anyone know of anything a little better? I have the Logitech Trackman, but the receiver makes it wholly unportable (and it's quite big anyway): Any thoughts?
