• How many developers do I need to build a website like Freelancer.com in about 3-5 months? [closed]

  I have been asked to make a list of people that I need to build something similar to freelancer.com. Not exactly same, has a few more features to it too but I can't really get my head around the whole freelancer.com site. I have built a social networking site from scratch which is 70% of Facebook and 20% Google+ in about 5 months with raw PHP, JS, CSS and Ajax. I dont think it will take me more than a month or something to build the whole freelancer.com from scratch. Please suggest anything that should I pay attention to. I am thinking about: 2 php developers 1 mysql engineer 1 network/server engineer 1 graphics artist 1 UI developer Time frame: 20 days Is this a good estimation?

• Parleys Testimonial at GlassFish Community Event, JavaOne 2012

  Parleys.com is an e-learning platform that provide a unique experience of online and offline viewing presentations, with integrated movies and chaptering, from the top notch developer conferences and about 40 JUGs all around the world. Stephan Janssen (the Devoxx man and Parleys webmaster) presented at the GlassFish Community Event at JavaOne 2012 and shared why they moved from Tomcat to GlassFish. The move paid off as GlassFish was able to handle 2000 concurrent users very easily. Now they are also running Devoxx CFP and registration on this updated infrastructure. The GlassFish clustering, the asadmin CLI, application versioning, and JMS implementation are some of the features that made them a happy user. • Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

I heard some story about some behavior: one software developer sells his software in some way. He is installing it on every client's computer and this software does not work on other computers or cannot be copied physically. How to implement the first and second protection. • 2D management game [on hold]

  Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project. • What are my options for selling software independently on Windows?

  I am looking to port a tool from the Mac app store over to Windows, the platform where I spend most of my time these days. I've spoken with the author of the original app and we've begun talking about licensing options should I decide to sell the application, and it seems like it would be feasible. I've never sold software independently, let alone on Windows. That I know of, there is not (yet) an equivalent app store for Windows (maybe one coming with Windows 8). Assuming my product was done today and I was ready to go to market, what options do I have for selling software for Windows as an independent developer or Micro-ISV? I know can sell it through my own website and accept PayPal, but are there options that will offer more visibility, similar to that of the Apple app stores? Any options to avoid?

As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: Learn about some of the "behind the scenes" work for an application, such as threads, events, and binding with the new learning trail on the landing page. Learn how to use cell editors with the List View component. The new example in the UI Controls tutorial shows how to build a list of names by selecting them from a combo box. But as we go through our usual dev cycles, we create these ApplicationIDs. Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy!The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. • How to use short breaks at work effectively for self-development?

  At the moment my daily work as a developer requires me to have short 10-20 min breaks after every 2-3 hours. It would be nice if I could use those effectively to improve my expertise in programming or CS in general. I tried several things: Reading jokes online gets boring very soon. Trying to solve some (even the most simple) tasks from different code contests requires more time, as long as I have some idea of an algorithm the time is over. Reading a randomly picked Wikipedia-article about Computer Science: depending upon the article sometimes it requires more time and is not an easy reading for a break. So, I ended up reading StackOverflow questions and answers with most votes: that is entertaining and educative. Do you have any other suggestions?

• Are developers expected to have skills of business analysts?

  Our business analyst has left the team. We are now expected to do the work which was previously done by the business analyst, and the management thinks that a task which is done in three months by a business analyst can be done in one month by a developer. My experience is in programming only, and I'm not familiar to the business intelligence tools. To me this seems like maybe an unfair comparison or expectation, and might even trivialize the role of a business analyst. Has anyone else encountered this situation? How to deal with it?

• Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

  I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)

• Website inheritance of ownership question

  I paid for a web site for my motel business, then due to my landlord actions I was placed in a position to file for bankrupcy. I asked my IT manager and web developer to close down the web site for the business. He has since then sold my web site to the new owners. I took all the photos myself and I am in at least 4 of the photos on the site. There are no changes to the site as I left it and it now states that it is under the copyright on the new owners? I am not sure what I should do as this happen 10 months ago and I have just found this out. Thank you for your help, I am in Australia.

• Moving from C# to Java [closed]

  I worked over 5 years as C# software developer, but last time I often think, should I learn Java platform (especially Java EE)? On job sites I see that there are much more Java jobs than .NET (financial, corporate sector) and Java salaries 20-25% higher than C#. But on the opposite side I see that job count trend for C# is growing last 7 years, but Java job trend is nearly constant. Is this fact a sign that soon situation will change and C# job became more profitable? I will be grateful for any advice or your opinion! Thank you.
