  I will work on a website SEO and before starting with it I would like to "take a snapshot" of the present status so that I will be able to compare it with the new situation in a few months and evaluate my work and the real improvement. I don't mean whether the website is well implemented or not, but how well it is seen by Google and others. What prominence it has. I am taking some variables from Google Analytics (average day visits...), from Google Webmaster Tools (Search traffic and average position...) and some other indicators, like automatic SEO audit figures (website estimated worth, real pagerank...).   It's been quite a few years since Code Complete was published. I really love the book, I keep it in the bathroom at the office and read a little out of it once or twice a day. What developments in computer software... development need to be added to Code Complete 3e, and for the sake of reductionism, what should be removed to make room for them? Is it necessary even possible to call Code Complete Code Complete if it doesn't have language features that even Delphi has like anonymous methods and generics? Also, what languages would be more appropriate than C++ to use for a majority of code examples?

• Wireless connection shows up but can't connect to internet with an Intel WiFi Link 5100

  I'm using an Asus G50V and I'm completely new to ubuntu. I just installed it and can connect to the internet with a wired connection and through wireless from my windows vista that I installed wubi on, and I can connect to my wireless network, but I can't actually connect to the internet through my wireless network. Thanks in advance. Network controller is an Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 according to lspci if that helps Also, the connection somehow started working after I decided to unplug my ethernet cable for the third time and headed upstairs after giving up for the day.. not sure how it happened, but after restarting, the connection stopped working again.. Wifi works on 11.10, but stops working when I upgrade back to 12.04..

• Why are there two different kinds of linking, i.e. static and dynamic?

  I've been bitten for the n-th time now by a library mismatch between a build and deployment environment. The build environment had libruby.so.2.0 and the deployment environment had libruby.a. One ruby was built with RVM, the other was built with ruby-build. The reason I ran into a problem was because zookeeper was compiled in a build environment that had the shared library but the deployment environment only had the static library. In all the years I've been writing application code I have never once wished that the binaries I was using where linked against shared objects. What is the reason the dichotomy persists to this day on modern operating systems?

• DockbarX Applet not loading

  I used to have dockbarX applet installed on my gnome panel. However one day when I login in I got a error message which can be seen in the screenshot below. So I removed it, and then tried adding it again to the gnome panel but I still get the error message. I am running the latest version of dockbarX 0.43 with the helpers enabled and media buttons etc. I did not update it recently and have been using this version for a couple of weeks now and got this problem only now. How can I solve this problem?

• Ubuntu 13.10 New keyboard stuff bugged wine games

  I have made recently a fresh install of ubuntu 13.10. Since the first day I have problems with keyboard probably because of the new ibus thing... My language is PT-PT. One of those problems is the wrong behaviours on wine. games I was running in ubuntu 13.04 (tomb-raider, Skyrim, Shadow Warrior and Dark Souls) installed in the new ubuntu 13.10 they started to get key stuck when there is a combination like W+D+R (Drifting right + reloading) and its not because of windows/wine problems because the prefixes are the same that I had in 13.04. The key stuck as already been reported on winehq for Skyrim for some one using Linux Mint that was based on the 13.10. Is there a way of making the keyboard work like I was in 13.04? Or can i change the input type? Or downgrade ibus or something like that?

• What does Avg Position from Google Webmaster really mean

  I have a website I am tracking on Google's Webmaster tools. When I look at the Search queries page it shows me a graph of Impressions and clicks per day. Underneath that there is a table showing specific results. One of the columns is Avg Position. That columns seems to include paid ads. Is that correct, does the Avg Position also include the top result ads(the ads at the top of the search results)? I am asking because the company I work for has a not so common name and whenever I Google it our site is the #1 result 100% of the time. The only thing above it is 1 paid add. When I checkout Webmaster tools I notice that searching for our name returns with us at an Avg Position of 2.0. That seems like it would be only possible if paid top result ads were included in that position. Does anyone know?

• A little SQL tip for C# developers

  The other day at work I came across a handy little block of SQL code from Jeremiah Clark's blog. It's pretty simple logic but through the mind of a C# developer making some quick DB updates, seems to me that it's more likely to end up writing out the code in Solution 1 instead of Solution 2 below to solve the problem. Basically, I needed to check and see if a specific record existed in Table1. If it does exist, then update that record, otherwise insert a new record into Table1. Solution 1: IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column1='SomeValue')     UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' ELSE     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...) Solution 2: UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' IF @@ROWCOUNT=0     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...)         As Jeremiah explains, they both accomplish the same thing but from a performance standpoint, Solution 2 is the better way to go (saved table/index scan). • Store HighRes photos in Database or as File?

  I run a site which has a couple of million photos and gets over 1000 photos uploaded each day. Up to now, we haven't kept the original file that was uploaded to conserve on space. However, we are getting to a point that we are starting to see a need to have high-res original versions. I was wondering if its better to store these in the filesystem as an actual file or if its better to store them in a database (ie: mysql). The highres images would be rarely referenced but may be used when someone decides to download it or we decide to use it for rare processes like making a new set of thumbnails sizes/etc.

The button has a Command and a CommandParameter. The command binds to the ButtonCommand that we have in our ViewModel RelayCommand _buttonCommand;         /// <summary>         /// Gets the button command.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The button command.</value>         public RelayCommand ButtonCommand         {             get             {                 if (_buttonCommand == null)                 {                     _buttonCommand = new RelayCommand(                         x => x != null && x.ToString().Length > 0 && CheckCommandAvailable(x.ToString()),                         x => ExecuteCommand(x.ToString()));                 }                 return _buttonCommand;             }         }   In our relay command we then do some checks with a lambda expression. We check if the command  parameter is null, is the length greater than 0 and we have a CheckCommandAvailable method that will tell  us if the button is even enabled. After we check on these three items we then pass the command parameter to an action method. This is all pretty straight forward, the issue that we solved a few days ago centered around having a control that needed to use a Relay Command and this control was a nested control and was using a different DataContext. The example below illustrates how we handled this scenario. We set the name of this control to “StatusView”. In our button control we set our command parameters and commands different than the example above. <HyperlinkButton Content="{Binding BigBoardButtonText, Mode=TwoWay}" CommandParameter="{Binding 'Position.PositionName'}" Command="{Binding ElementName=StatusView, Path=DataContext.BigBoardCommand, Mode=TwoWay}" /> This hyperlink button lives in a ListBox control and this listbox has an ItemSource of PositionSelectors. The Command Parameter is binding to the Position.Position property of that PositionSelectors object. This again is pretty straight forward again. What gets a bit tricky is the Command property in the hyperlink. It is binding to the element name we created in the user control (StatusView) Because this hyperlink is in a listbox and is in the item template it doesn’t have a direct handle on the DataContext that the RadTileViewItem has so we have to make sure it does. We do that by binding to the element name of status view then set the path to DataContext.BigBoardCommand. BigBoardCommand is the name of the RelayCommand in the view model. private RelayCommand _bigBoardCommand = null;         /// <summary>         /// Gets the big board command.         /// </summary>         /// <value>The big board command.</value>         public RelayCommand BigBoardCommand         {             get             {                 if (_bigBoardCommand == null)                 {                     _bigBoardCommand = new RelayCommand(x => true, x => AddToBigBoard(x.ToString()));                 }                 return _bigBoardCommand;             }         } From there we check for true again and then call the action and pass in the parameter that we had as the command parameter. What we are working on now is a bit trickier than this second example. In the above example we are only creating this TileViewItem with this name “StatusView” once. In another part of our application we are generating multiple TileViewItems, so we cannot set the name in the control as we cant have multiple controls with the same name. When we run the application we get an error that reads that the value is out of expected range. My searching has led me to think we cannot have multiple controls with the same name. This is today’s problem and Ill post the solution to this once it is found.

• How does apt-btrfs-snapshot work?

  I read on the planet that apt-btrfs-snapshot would be available for Natty. The brief description of what it does sounds very nice: it will automatically create filesystem snapshot (of everything but /home) when apt installs/removes/upgrades. With the apt-btrfs-snapshot cli app its easy to list/remove/rollback the snapshots But before I convert my entire life to btrfs for the sole purpose of gaining a built-in backup system, can anybody tell me how btrfs's snapshots work. To my layman's brain, it sounds like this would eat a devastating amount of disk space if you're taking snapshots every time you install or upgrade something (I do this more than once a day). I assume the system is smarter than I'm allowing it but I really don't know. How do the snapshots work?
