    When attempting to telnet postfix from a different host in the same LAN through the FQDN (and thus the LAN's public IP), the following error occurs: root@mailer:/var/log# telnet mail.domain.com 25 Trying 1.2.3.4... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused Other services can be reached from the exact same host, however: root@mailer:/var/log# telnet mail.domain.com 22 Trying 1.2.3.4... Connected to mail.domain.com. Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_6.0p1 Debian-4+deb7u1 To make matters more intriguing, Postfix can be accessed from outside the LAN: nunos-mbp:mailog nzimas$ telnet mail.domain.com 25 Trying 1.2.3.4... Connected to mail.domain.com. Escape character is '^]'. 220 mail.domain.com ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu) To sum thing up: a) Postfix (running on 10.10.10.4 / mail.domiain.com) refuses connection from a host in the same LAN (10.10.10.2), but only when queried through the FQDN (mail.domain.com) b) mail.domain.com accepts connections to other services (but Postfix) from 10.10.10.2 c) mail.domain.com accepts connections to all services, including Postfix, from the outside world If it were a firewall issue, then I believe it would not be possible to connect to any service from 10.10.10.2 through the FQSN / public IP. It ought to be some missing parameter in Postfix, although I haven't found any clear pointers so far.

  • iPhone App with Web Service Access

    I have been asked to write a compliment website/service for an iPhone app. The app creates images. The author wants these images to be uploaded onto the server, into their personal storage area. These images need to be able to be pulled down to the iPhone later for editing. The user will be able to use the website as well to see these images. I have yet to decide (or understand) what the best way of implementing this would be. And with no experience with iPhone development I have no idea what it can actually handle.

  • Pin same app multiple times in Windows 7

    I use some programs with command line arguments and like to have shortcuts for launching those programs with those arguments. For example, I keep several Firefox profiles around and like to specify the profile name on the command line. Similarly I have several Eclipse shortcuts with a command line argument specifying the workspace to open. I would like to be able to pin these shortcuts to the start menu or taskbar in Windows 7. The problem I have is that once I've pinned one of these, no other shortcuts which launch the same exe can be launched. I'm also open to suggestions such as a suitable desktop gadget which can contain a bunch of arbitrary shortcuts, yet remain in a fixed position on my desktop somewhere, or some way of adding a secondary taskbar (this was possible in XP).

    I'm using the Python "units" package (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/units/) and I've run into some trouble when trying to pickle them. I've tried to boil it down to the simplest possible to case to try and figure out what's going on. Here's my simple test: from units import unit, named_unit from units.predefined import define_units from units.compatibility import compatible from units.registry import REGISTRY a = unit('m') a_p = pickle.dumps(a) a_up = pickle.loads(a_p) logging.info(repr(unit('m'))) logging.info(repr(a)) logging.info(repr(a_up)) logging.info(a.is_si()) logging.info(a_up.is_si()) logging.info( compatible(a,a_up) ) logging.info(a(10) + a_up(10)) The output I'm seeing when I run this is: LeafUnit('m', True) LeafUnit('m', True) LeafUnit('m', True) True True False IncompatibleUnitsError I'd understand if pickling units broke them, if it weren't for the fact that repr() is returning identical results for them. What am I missing? This is using v0.04 of the units package, and Google App Engine 1.4 SDK 1

  • Running Ruby app on Apache

    I have been learning Ruby lately, and I want to upload a test web application to my server. But I can't figure out how to get it to run on my shared hosting. My Hosting Details Shared Hosting with JustHost (see here for list of features) OS: Linux Apache: 2.2.11 cPanel: 11.25.0-STABLE No SSH access. Can install Ruby Gems. Can't install Apache modules. Can "Manage Ruby on Rails Applications" through cPanel. Mongrel gem is installed. I built the following simple HelloWorld Ruby Rack app using Sinatra: #!/usr/bin/ruby ruby require 'rubygems' require 'sinatra' get '/hi' do "Hello World!" end I just can can't figure out how to "start" the application. Do I need to tell Mongrel (or maybe Apache) that the application exists somehow? How do I start this app running? I am happy to provide more info if needed.

    I have been trying to configure munin-plugins-rails to monitor the performance of our rails apps from Munin. The graphs appear, but no data is shown in the graphs. The log files show Error output from : 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Request-log-analyzer, by Willem van Bergen and $ 2013/06/27-15:39:06 [5540] Website: http://railsdoctors.com I have tried running Request-log-analyzer manually and pointing it at the production log file, and this reports as % for every item. There is data in the log file. I have tried changing the version of the gems installed, and also the type of the log file, but no luck. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

  • Ruby class variable is reset after rails app initialized

    I tried to assign a class static variable like this class QueryLogger < Logger @@query_logger_default_instance = nil def self.default_instance # Use global variable because static variable doesn't work @@query_logger_default_instance ||= self.new(STDOUT) end end In initializers folder of my rails app, I added a file with this code block ActiveRecord::Base.logger = QueryLogger.default_instance In a request (action of controller), I make a call to this: QueryLogger.default_instance. My assumption is that the call to default_instance will always report the same. However, it does not. Now I try to watch stuff in NetBeans by setting breakpoint inside default_instance. Thing happen as expected, the default_instance get called twice, one due to the initializer block and one due to the call to my action. Surprising thing is, in both times, @@query_logger_default_instance report nil inside NetBeans inspector. The first nil report is correct, but the second shocked me. It's look like static variable gets reset after rails app initialized. Is there some magic there?

Please see the screenshots linked above. I'm currently on 2.2 with NexusOne, but same thing happened on 2.1update1 (esp. case 2) as well before.

  • handling activity destruction in multithreaded android app

    Hi, I have a multithreded app where background threads are used to load data over network or from disk/db. Every once in a while user will perform some action e.g. fetch news over network, which will spawn a background AsyncTask, but for some reason user will quit the app (press back button so that activity gets destroyed). In most such scenarios, I make appropriate checks in the background thread after it returns from n/w i/o, so that it won't crash by accessing members of the activity that is destroyed by now. However some corner cases are left where crashes happen, because the background thread would access some member of activity that is now null. Do other Android developers have some generic/recommended framework to handle such scenarios? These are the times when I wish android would have guaranteed termination of all threads when activity destroys (in the same way that regular linux process cleans up when it's quit)... but I guess Android devs had good reasons for not exposing process lifetimes through the api.

    I'm working on an app which supports live editing. That is you update properties in one area and their impact is seen in another with hitting "apply". Happens to be a charting app. One such edit "group" allows specifying a range. A triple range in fact: High, Target and Low. Our validation is such that High must be greater than target, target must be greater than Low (rocket science). Our dilemma is that the visual experience is a bit jarring when someone wants to go from say 30,20,10 to 15,10,5. I'm curious if anyone has implemented a mechanism for this scenario that might fit well in our situation such that we don't "yell" at the user as they change the range values.

    I have a GUI application which can create many similar windows on desktop. All windows have same title. I have to enumerate all dialogs with same title and make some tests against each of such dialogs. If I call: dialog = app['Window Name'] pywinauto returns a WindowSpecification object which is useful along with accessing controls by name. When I call: dialogs = app.windows_(title='Window Name') pywinauto returns me a list of HwndWrapper instances which are not so useful. How to obtain a list of windows with specified title but as WindowSpecification objects?

    They have asks to turn off caching on our browsers. I was aghast that they would ask such a thing. I said to them; To avoid caching it is best practice to use; <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> This should work across all browsers. Their reply was; We need to refresh javascript at runtime, this will not help us – any more ideas? I replied; Unsure what you mean by “refresh javascript at runtime”. If you are using ajax, browser caching can effect the XMLHttpRequest open method. Adding these meta tags to the source has fixed this for me in the past. Browser caching only caches resources, it should have no effect on site scripting. These meta tags will bypass browser caching. This is a reasonable request, isn't it?

  • I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

    Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load.     I have several copies/instances of my xp mode image and have a bunch of apps that were auto-published to Win7. I have since disabled the "auto-publish" apps in the instances but still have the applications listed. What is the correct/best way to clear them out. I read a post somewhere that you can just delete the shortcut in the start menu but I want to remove all links and don't know if that would suffice? Thanks TK

    I have a .NET solution with an installer project that generates an MSI. One of the projects installed by the MSI contains an App.Config file. It appears that the values of that config file are embedded into the MSI at compile time. Is there a way to override them at runtime? For instance, the App.Config I'm working with sets the URL of a web service that the installer talks to. Is it possible to override this URL at runtime, so that I don't have to recompile the MSI if the URL changes?
