  • Announcing the New Windows Azure Web Sites Shared Scaling Tier

    - by Clint Edmonson
Windows Azure Web Sites has added a new pricing tier that will solve the #1 blocker for the web development community. The shared tier now supports custom domain names mapped to shared-instance web sites. This post will outline the plan changes and elaborate on how the new pricing model makes Windows Azure Web Sites an even richer option for web development shops of all sizes. Free Shared Reserved # of Sites 10 100 100 Egress 165MB/Day 5GB/Month Included 5GB/Month Included Storage 1GB 1GB 10GB Throttling CPU/Memory/Egress CPU/Memory Unlimited Price Free $.02/hr per site, per instance $.08/hr per core Setting the Stage In June, we released the first public preview of Windows Azure Web Sites, which gave web developers a great platform on which to get web sites running using their web development framework of choice. PHP, Node.js, classic ASP, and ASP.NET developers can all utilize the Windows Azure platform to create and launch their web sites. Likewise, these developers have a series of data storage options using Windows Azure SQL Databases, MySQL, or Windows Azure Storage. The Windows Azure Web Sites free offer enabled startups to get their site up and running on Windows Azure with a minimal investment, and with multiple deployment and continuous integration features such as Git, Team Foundation Services, FTP, and Web Deploy.  The response to the Windows Azure Web Sites offer has been overwhelmingly positive. Since the addition of the service on June 12th, tens of thousands of web sites have been deployed to Windows Azure and the volume of adoption is increasing every week. Preview Feedback In spite of the growth and success of the product, the community has had questions about features lacking in the free preview offer. The main question web developers asked regarding Windows Azure Web Sites relates to the lack of the free offer’s support for domain name mapping. During the preview launch period, customer feedback made it obvious that the lack of domain name mapping support was an area of concern. We’re happy to announce that this #1 request has been delivered as a feature of the new shared plan. New Shared Tier Portal Features In the screen shot below, the “Scale” tab in the portal shows the new tiers – Free, Shared, and Reserved – and gives the user the ability to quickly move any of their free web sites into the shared tier. With a single mouse-click, the user can move their site into the shared tier. Once a site has been moved into the shared tier, a new Manage Domains button appears in the bottom action bar of the Windows Azure Portal giving site owners the ability to manage their domain names for a shared site. This button brings up the domain-management dialog, which can be used to enter in a specific domain name that will be mapped to the Windows Azure Web Site. Shared Tier Benefits Startups and large web agencies will both benefit from this plan change. Here are a few examples of scenarios which fit the new pricing model: Startups no longer have to select the reserved plan to map domain names to their sites. Instead, they can use the free option to develop their sites and choose on a site-by-site basis which sites they elect to move into the shared plan, paying only for the sites that are finished and ready to be domain-mapped Agencies who manage dozens of sites will realize a lower cost of ownership over the long term by moving their sites into reserved mode. Once multi-site companies reach a certain price point in the shared tier, it is much more cost-effective to move sites to a reserved tier.  Long-term, it’s easy to see how the new Windows Azure Web Sites shared pricing tier makes Windows Azure Web Sites it a great choice for both startups and agency customers, as it enables rapid growth and upgrades while keeping the cost to a minimum. Large agencies will be able to have all of their sites in their own instances, and startups will have the capability to scale up to multiple-shared instances for minimal cost and eventually move to reserved instances without worrying about the need to incur continually additional costs. Customers can feel confident they have the power of the Microsoft Windows Azure brand and our world-class support, at prices competitive in the market. Plus, in addition to realizing the cost savings, they’ll have the whole family of Windows Azure features available. Continuous Deployment from GitHub and CodePlex Along with this new announcement are two other exciting new features. I’m proud to announce that web developers can now publish their web sites directly from CodePlex or GitHub.com repositories. Once connections are established between these services and your web sites, Windows Azure will automatically be notified every time a check-in occurs. This will then trigger Windows Azure to pull the source and compile/deploy the new version of your app to your web site automatically. Walk-through videos on how to perform these functions are below: Publishing to an Azure Web Site from CodePlex Publishing to an Azure Web Site from GitHub.com These changes, as well as the enhancements to the reserved plan model, make Windows Azure Web Sites a truly competitive hosting option. It’s never been easier or cheaper for a web developer to get up and running. Check out the free Windows Azure web site offering and see for yourself. • Change NSNumber value by allocating new NSNumber?

    - by Peter Hajas
I understand that NSNumber is immutable, but I still have the need to change it in my app. I use it because it's an object, and therefore usable with @property (if I could, I would use float or CGFloat in a heartbeat, but sadly, I can't). Is there any way to just overwrite the old NSNumber instance? I'm trying this: NSNumber *zero = [[NSNumber alloc] initWithFloat:0.0]; myNSNumber = zero but this doesn't change the value. This is a simplified version of my code, as I'm changing the root view controller's parameter (I know, not MVC-friendly). Still, the changing of the value should be the same assignment, right? Should I release myNSNumber first? What should I set the @property at for myNSNumber? Thanks!

  • UIEvent for iPhone locking & unlocking?

    - by Jason
I am building an iPhone app in which I want to time user activity. However, I don't want to count time when the iPhone was locked (or when the user received a phone call) when calculating the times. What is the best way to do this? Is there a UIEvent which my app can receive (and act upon) when the iPhone locks or unlocks?

  • cocoa - making a class like UIButton

    - by Mike
For some reason that will take too much time to explain, I have to create a UIImageView based class that has some properties of a button. Imagine a class like the UISwitch (no I cannot base my class on the UISwitch) with two states, on and off. WHen the user selects one state, it runs a method like a button that was clicked and the method receives the sender id. I have already the class more or less working. The class is based on UIImageView. I am having difficulties to understand the following. WHen I create a new button I have a line that is like [myButton addTarget:self action:NSSelectorFromString(myMethod) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; This line defines a target and an action to run when the button is triggered. I my case I would need something like [myObject addTarget:self action:myMethod ifState:1] //or another thing ifState:2 I have no idea what kind of code I should put on the class to make this work. Remember that as a button the class should send the "sender" information to identify the object which triggered the action... Can you guys, transcendental gurus help? thanks.

  • per build configuration files on iPhone ?

    - by Matt
I'm looking for the best way to store per-Build configuration information for an iPhone app. In my iPhone app there are several url's and storage location settings that are specific to a particular build (DEBUG RELEASE etc) Currently i have three recipients for my app, QA/Test, myself and the customer, each has specific settings for the url's and storage locations mentioned above. whats the best way to do this? NOTE: they don't necessarily have to be defined in the build but what im looking for is advice on the best way to store alternate configuration settings. ALSO NOTE: i do not want these settings to be editable through the settings app thanks

  • MPMediaItem - NSCoding problem with MPMediaItemArtwork

    - by z s
Hi, So MPMediaItem conforms to NSCoding, but it contains a pointer to MPMediaItemArtwork, which doesn't conform to NSCoding. So if I try to archive a MPMediaItem, if that item has some artwork in it, it will not be able to unarchive. I tried to make a category of MPMediaItemArtwork and make it conform to NSCoding, but I can't seem to do that because we don't have access to the actual UIImage that it stores. Does anyone know of any other creative ways to get around this problem? I want to be able to archive an MPMediaItem, even if it means somehow stripping off the artwork object. Is there a way to make a category of a class to strip away certain functionality (instead of just adding more, like we do with categories)? Or any other clever way to achieve this? Thanks.

  • Cannot show scene with Cocos2D when using UITabBarController

    - by gw1921
Hi I'm new to Cocos2D but am having serious issues when trying to load a cocos scene in one of the UIViewControllers mixed with other normal UIKit UIViewControllers. My project uses a UITabBarController to manage four view controllers. Three are normal UIKit view controllers while one of them I want to use cocos2D for (to draw some sprites and animate them). The following is what I've done so far. In the applicationDidFinishLaunching method, I initialize cocos2D to use the window and take the first tabbarcontroller view: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { if( ! [CCDirector setDirectorType:CCDirectorTypeDisplayLink] ) { [CCDirector setDirectorType:CCDirectorTypeDefault]; } [[CCDirector sharedDirector] setPixelFormat:kPixelFormatRGBA8888]; [CCTexture2D setDefaultAlphaPixelFormat:kTexture2DPixelFormat_RGBA8888]; [[CCDirector sharedDirector] setDisplayFPS:YES]; [[CCDirector sharedDirector] attachInView: window]; [[[CCDirector sharedDirector] openGLView] addSubview: tabBarController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; } Then in the third UIViewController code (where I want to use cocos2D) I do this (note: the view is being loaded from a NIB file which has a blank UIView and nothing else):\ - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; // 'scene' is an autorelease object. CCScene *myScene = [CCScene node]; // 'layer' is an autorelease object. MyLayer *myLayer = [MyLayer node]; // add layer as a child to scene [myScene addChild: myLayer]; [[CCDirector sharedDirector] runWithScene: myScene]; } However all I see is a blank white view and nothing else. If I call the following in viewdidLoad: [[CCDirector sharedDirector] attachInView: self.view]; The app crashes complaining that CCDirector is already attached. Please help!

  • What is the proper way to align UITableViewCells when only some have an imageView?

    - by Topher Fangio
Hello all, I am new to iPhone programming and working on my first real application (i.e. one not written in a book or online) and I've run into a small problem which I could solve a multitude of ways, but feel like there should be a good solution that perhaps I am just missing. Here is the scenario: I have a UITableView with a bunch of standard UITableViewCells in it. What I want to do is toggle a green check mark when the cell is selected and I have that part working (note: I'm already using the accessoryType for something else, so I can't use it for the checkmark...besides, it's not as pretty). Unfortunately, when I toggle the checkmark like so: if (...) { cell.imageView.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"checkmark.png"]; } else { cell.imageView.image = nil; } It makes the cell's label bounce back and forth depending on whether it is checked or not. What is the proper way to align the cell's text (set via cell.textLabel.text) regardless of whether or not it has an image set? The solutions I have come up with are: Create a blank 40x40 png image in Photoshop and set the unchecked to that Create a blank 40x40 image solely in code Set some setting that I don't know about that will align it for me Create a subclass of UITableCellView that does what I need (which would be stupid, I'd just go with option 1...) Suggestions? Thoughts? Comments? Thank you very much :-) P.S. I'd like the solution to work with OS 3.0 and 4.0 if that makes any sort of difference.

  • iphone: how do I obtain a list of all files with a given extension on the app's document folder?

    - by Mike
I have saved all my files using something like this NSString *fileName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@.plist", myName]; NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES); NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0]; NSString *appFile = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:fileName]; [myDict writeToFile:appFile atomically:YES]) //where myDic is a dictionary containing the value of all parameters I would like to save. All these files were saved with the .plist extension. The same directory contains several JPG and PNG files. Now, how do I retrieve the list of all .plist files on that directory? thanks for any help.

  • cocoa - converting a double to string

    - by Mike
I have a double number and I would like to convert it to string. The number is, for example, something like 24.043333332154465777... but if I convert it to string using something like NSString *myString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%f", myDouble]; The string is just 24.043333 how do I get a full string the corresponds to the whole double number? What other methods do I have to convert this?

  • Cocoa - array not sorting?

    - by Mike
I have this set NSMutableSet *mySet = [NSMutableSet setWithObjects: @"2", @"8", @"7", @"0", @"3", nil]; I copy the set to an array and sort it using NSArray *sortedArray = [[mySet allObjects] sortedArrayUsingSelector:@selector(compare:)]; The resulting array is in exactly the same order as the set and is not being sorted. Why? thanks for any help. EDIT: CORRECING A TYPO.

  • CAScrollLayer doesn't scroll!

    - by Cliff
    Maybe it's because it's late. Whatever the reason I can't figure out why I'm having trouble with a simple CSScrollLayer example I'm trying. I add a 50 pixel Eclipse icon to a view based project and in my initialize method (called from initWithNibName:bundle:) I have this: -(void) initialize { CAScrollLayer *scrollLayer = [CAScrollLayer layer]; scrollLayer.backgroundColor = [[UIColor blackColor] CGColor]; CGRect bounds = self.view.bounds; scrollLayer.bounds = CGRectMake(0, 0, bounds.size.width, bounds.size.height); scrollLayer.contentsRect = CGRectMake(0, 0, bounds.size.width + 800, bounds.size.height + 800); scrollLayer.borderWidth = 2.5; scrollLayer.borderColor = [[UIColor redColor] CGColor]; scrollLayer.position = CGPointMake(self.view.center.x, self.view.center.y - 20); scrollLayer.scrollMode = kCAScrollBoth; [self.view.layer addSublayer:scrollLayer]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"eclipse32.gif"]; for(int i=0; i<6; i++) { layer = [CALayer layer]; layer.backgroundColor = [[UIColor blackColor] CGColor]; layer.bounds = CGRectMake(0, 0, 100, 100); layer.contents = (id)[image CGImage]; layer.position = CGPointMake(layer.bounds.size.width * i, self.view.center.y); [scrollLayer addSublayer:layer]; } // [button removeFromSuperview]; // [self.view addSubview:button]; // self.view.userInteractionEnabled = YES; [image release]; } The scroll layer shows, the icon is repeated on the layer I have a border around the edge of the screen. Everything is lovely except I can't scroll the icons. I've tried with/without setting scroll mode. I've tried with a single stretched icon that falls off screen. I've tried everything. What am I doing wrong?
