• UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

• Admin user runs slower than the guest account

  My user is the Admin, it runs fine, not bugs or anything, I used Ubuntu Tweak for a few things like logging options and the sidebar and Unity Tweak for hotcornes and minimize window and that's about it. My second user (for my mother) is faster. I don't know how or why. Let me know what I need to enter on the terminal to give you more info, if you think it's normal also let me know. I have a Compaq Presario CQ56, Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual boot with Windows 7 Premium, 3GB of ram DDR3, Celeron(R) Dual-Core CPU T3500 @ 2.10GHz × 2.

• Is there a ppa or repository where we can update LibreOffice to version 3.6?

  On http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ there is only RPM version - when great majority of Desktop Linux users are using systems based on APT... ppa:libreoffice/ppa seems to be very outdated with version 3.5 It's frustating to see several fixes on Windows version and Ubuntu versions so outdated... People generally reply as: we don't update due to security/stability reasons, etc example 1 example 2 why don't you compile yourself ? For those easy answers, I generally reply: let me decide which version to use at my own risk. I just want to try a newer version and I trust on LibreOffice devs. I understand that update a core lib is very dangerous but Libreoffice is an user application and it don't just break the whole system. Why don't I compile ? Because I am a regular user and don't have time to learn it. I would love to have this time but unfortunately, I don't have. Red Hat/Fedora guys have the same concerns but they update their LibreOffices...

• What is the best way of testing Ubuntu?

  I'm a little confused as to whether I should install Ubuntu on its own partition on my hard drive, use VirtualBox or another virtualization package to install it, or use Wubi to install it directly on top of my current OS (Win 7). I definitely want to learn and use Ubuntu, so this is not just for playing around with it. Also, if I choose to partition, should I partition the hard drive myself or should I let the Ubuntu installation menu do it for me? I understand that I am going to need a main partition, for Ubuntu's core components, and also a swap partition. Then there is the option to add a partition for "home"- I don't understand what combination of these partitioning options I should choose, or whether it is better to partition in Windows before I install Ubuntu or just partition my hard drive when I install Ubuntu itself

• Problem installing libva (VAAPI), vainfo fails

  I'm following a wiki on how to make VLC use the GPU in the Core i3 integrated graphics chipset, but I'm stuck at one of the first steps, installing VAAPI. I installed libva1 and vainfo by using "sudo apt-get install libva1 vainfo", but when I run vainfo it says libva: libva version 0.32.0 libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit It should say VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointVLD VAProfileVC1Advanced : VAEntrypointVLD according to the wiki. /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so doesn't exist in my system, but I installed libva1 with apt-get.

• khotkey script calling bindings stop to work on switching to Quantal

  I have many scripts which I call with khotkey. For example I have a hotkey which executes: bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole On updating to Quantal -- it stops to work: if I call that key -- it searches bk_starts_or_brings.bash 'Konsole' konsole in google in default web-browser. I tried: sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases fakeroot libqtgui4 When I start the command from konsole -- it works as expected, but when I call it with khotkey -- it doesn't. I guess someone shadows my keybiding. Or some daemon is not run on startup.

• Switching Workspace in Xubuntu Oneiric is slow, how to improve it?

  The processor is a single core AMD Sempron 1.6 GHz. While it is a few years old, workspace switching under Ubuntu Lucid / Gnome to ANY workspace was always instant, even when a lot of apps were open. Under Xubuntu Oneiric, switching to an empty workspace is instant, but switching to a workspace with 5 open applications takes 8 to 9 seconds. Compiz is not installed. Since XFCE is said to be more light weight than Gnome, switching should be instant too, isn't it ? How can this be improved ?

• usb stop working

  I'm using Xubuntu 12.04 on a 64 bit Intel core duo laptop and the 3 USB 3.0 ports stopped working if I do not use the mouse. I updated the kernel to 3.9 but the bug persists. I googled too much and the few reponses I got cannot fixed this. The only solution is shuting down, unplugging and then plugging them back, then all works fine. But after half an hour or two days the bug reappears. How can I solve this? Thanks and excuse my poor english.

Edit : The Solution : Upgrade kernel and then update all graphic card drivers.Now there is no problem .

• Comparisons of Javascript 'data grids'?

  I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

  I found a ton of formulae and what not, but 3D isn't my forte so I'm at a loss of what specifically to use. My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).   i'm having some troubles with screen resolution. First of all, i'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad E520, with BackTrack 5 R2 installed. As far as I know, BT is based on Ubuntu 3.2, so I hope this is the right place to ask for help. My natural resolution is 1366x768, but I'm stuck with 1024x768. This is my hardware: lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Interl Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) How can I fix that? Is there a ready-to-use driver or I have to compile that from source? At least, is there a solution, at all? :(

• Are there any resources for motion-planning puzzle design?

  Some background: I'm poking at a set of puzzles along the lines of Rush Hour/Sokoban/etc; for want of a better description, call them 'motion planning' puzzles - the player has to figure out the correct sequence of moves to achieve a particular configuration. (It's the sort of puzzle that's generically PSPACE-complete if that actually helps anyone's mental image). While I have a few straightforward 'building blocks' that I can use for puzzle crafting and I have a few basic examples put together, I'm trying to figure out how to avoid too much sameness over a large swath of these kinds of puzzles, and I'm also trying to figure out how to make puzzles that have more of a feel of logical solution than trial-and-error. Does anyone know of good resources out there for designing instances of this sort of puzzle once the core puzzle rules are in place? Most of what I've found on puzzle design only covers creating the puzzle rules, not building interesting puzzles out of a set of rules.

I have a two core processor. So two threads can run in parallel. I was trying to see if I have a work w that is done by 2 threads, and if I have the same work done by t threads with each thread doing w/t of the work.   I am trying to use Nvidia Optimus on my laptop by using Bumblebee, I have an Intel Core i5 with an Nvidia Geforce GT 630M. I have followed the instructions on the wiki page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee, but when trying to run optirun with Firefox (or any other program, like glxspheres), I get the following error: [ 1921.452820] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not load GPU driver [ 1921.452905] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.   I bought a brand new computer yesterday (Toshiba Satellite Pro L770-10T : Intel Core i5 2410M, 2,3 GHz, 4096 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 525M) that simply won't boot any livecd I tried. I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW. • Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade succeeded partially - I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that?

  When I wanted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 the update manager told me that there was an unresolvable problem with calculating the upgrade. In order to see more details I performed the following on the command line: apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core do-release-upgrade Now do-release-upgrade tells me that no newer version is available but the "about" box in the main menu tells me I am still on 13.10. I think the latter is right, as for instance in the "system settings" there is no way to select local menus, which is present in 14.04 (I tried with a DVD, and there it is). Maybe the problem is related to the fact that "apt-get update" cannot get two resources called "saucy/InRelease" and "saucy/main/binary-i386/Packages" from the mirror (mirror.informatik.uni-mannheim.de; 404 not found). I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that? Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.
