Best architecture for a social media app

Hey guys, Im working on promising project that develops a new social media app for web and mobile. We are at begin defining functionalities. Nevertheless, I'm thinking ahead on architecture. So I'm asking: 1 - Whats the best plataform to develop the core of this aplication that will have a Rest API interface. 2 - Whats the best database that will scale and grow with my application. As far as I researched, these were the answers I found most interesting: For database: Cassandra NoSQL DB, amazing scalabilty, amazing write performance, good read performance (will be improved on 0.6). I think i will choose that one. Zookeer for transactions on Cassandra. I think that 2 technologies rly good for that propose. What do you think guys? On the front end that will serve the REST API, i dont have a final candidate. For this one i have questions based on Perfomance X Scalabilty X Fast Development/Maintenance. Java or .Net As far as I researched, brings the best balance of this requisits. Python, pearl and Rail, has the best (Fast Development/Maintenance), but sux on all other. C or C++ I dont even consider, because its (Fast Development/Maintenance) sux... So what do you guy think about it?

Django: Serving Media Behind Custom URL

How can I accomplished what I get above while still making nginx/apache serve the media? Is this something that should be done at the webserver level? Rails : fighting long http response times with ajax. Is it a good idea? Please, help with implementa

Hi, everybody! I've googled some tutorials, browsed some SO answers, and was unable to find a recipe for my problem. I'm writing a web site which is supposed to display almost realtime stock chart. Data is stored in constantly updating MySQL database, I wrote a find_by_sql query code which fetches all the data I need to get my chart drawn. Everything is ok, except performance - it takes from one second to one minute for different queries to fetch all the data from the database, this time includes necessary (My)SQL-server side calculations. This is simply unacceptable. I got the following idea: if the data is queried from the MySQL server one point a time instead of entire dataset, it takes only about 1-100ms to get an individual point. I imagine the data fetch process might be browser-driven. After the user presses the button in order to get a chart drawn, controller makes one request to the database and renders, say, a progress bar, say 1% ready. When the browser gets the response, it immediately makes an (ajax) request, and the server fetches the next piece of data and renders "2%". And so on, until all the data is ready and the server displays the requested chart. Could this be implemented in rails+js, is there a tutorial for solving a similar problem on the Web? I suppose if the thing is feasible at all, somebody should have already done this before. I have read several articles about ajax, I believe I do understand general principles, but never did nontrivial ajax programming myself. Thanks for your time!

Method for launching audio player on Android from web page for streaming media

To link to SHOUTcast/HTTP internet radio streams, traditionally you would link to a playlist file, such as an M3U or PLS. From there, the browser would launch the audio player registered to handle the playlist. This works great on any PC, Palm, Blackberry, and iPhone. This method does not work in Android without installing extra software. Sure, Just Playlists or StreamFurious can handle it just fine, but I am assuming there has to be a way to invoke the audio or video player commonly installed by default on Android installations. By default, no audio player is capable of handling M3U or PLS. The player seems to open it, but says "Unsupported Media Type". To make this more annoying, the browser is capable of streaming MP3 audio over HTTP, simply by opening a link to an MP3 file. I have tried simply linking directly to the MP3 stream hosted by SHOUTcast, which should end up in the same result, but SHOUTcast detects "Mozilla" in the user-agent string, and instead of sending the stream, it sends the information page for the station. How should I link to a SHOUTcast stream on Android, from a normal mobile site, without using extra applications?

i have a system there user(sender) can write a note to friends(receivers), number of receivers=0. Text of the message is saved in DB and visible to sender and all receivers then they login to system. Sender can add more receivers at any time. More over any of receivers can edit the message and even remove it from DB. For this system i created 3 tables, shortly: users(userID, username, password) messages(messageID, text) list(id, senderID, receiverID, messageID) in table "list" each row corresponds to pair sender-receiver, like sender_x_ID -- receiver_1_ID -- message_1_ID sender_x_ID -- receiver_2_ID -- message_1_ID sender_x_ID -- receiver_3_ID -- message_1_ID Now the problem is: 1. if user deletes the message from table "messages" how to automatically delete all rows from table "list" which correspond to deleted message. Do i have to include some foreign keys? More important: 2. if sender has let say 3 receivers for his message1 (username1, username2 and username3) and at certain moment decides to add username4 and username5 and at the same time exclude username1 from the list of receivers. PHP code will get the new list of receivers (username2, username3, username4, username5) That means insert to table "list" sender_x_ID -- receiver_4_ID -- message_1_ID sender_x_ID -- receiver_5_ID -- message_1_ID and also delete from table "list" the row corresponding to user1 (which is not in the list or receivers any more) sender_x_ID -- receiver_1_ID -- message_1_ID which sql query to send from PHP to make it in an easy and intelligent way? What resources will help me understand the data model for QC 10.0 in order to write my SQL queries?

I am a fresher in Quality Center 10.0 HP software testing tool. As per my understanding in order to generate reports from QC and to troubleshoot the scenarios, we need to write SQL queries in the QC back end database. In my case it is SQL db. I downloaded the database reference help file but I could not understand from where I can start. It just gave the table name and its information. For a starter like me are there any online tutorials or helpful websites,hands on exercises,scenario's where I can better understand how to write queries for the QC data model? Does connection pooling work fine to execute 60 DB queries to load a page?

We use Linq2Sql in an ASP.NET application. Unfortunately the eager-loading in Linq2Sql isn't as powerful as in Entity Framework, so a lot of the data has to be lazy loaded as needed. Taking connection pooling into account, is it OK for a web page to execute 60 queries to load a page? Executing a single big query probably won't be much better, as those 60 queries will all those connection pooled connections and not open a new connection each time (which I realize is slow). Any thoughts?

Internet Explorer percent based layout issue

Heya, My goal is to make a layout that is 200% width and height, with four containers of equal height and width (100% each), using no javascript as the bear minimum (or preferably no hacks). Right now I am using HTML5, and CSS display:table. It works fine in Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, and Chrome 5. I haven't tested it yet on older versions. Nonetheless, in IE7 and IE8 this layout fails completely. SIP UAS asks for OPTIONS

Hey, I have UAC that registers to a UAS, after registration the UAS sends me an OPTIONS request, what should I answer it? only the audio media streams? Update I: Allow me to explain myself better... if I want to invite someone to a session I USE the INVITE method and negotiate the media then, for that specific session. But once I register to the server, and it asks me for OPTIONS, then what should I supply, everything my client supports? once I answer it would it deduce that every INVITE I would request from now on would use these medias? or would I need to supply new media with every request? Networking with Windows 7

I got several computers connected to my home wireless network and I want to make use of some of the features of Windows 7 for home networks but I can't seem to get them working: How do I keep files and folders in sync between specific computers? I'm not talking about Live Sync. How can I stream to Windows Media Player from another computer? I would appreciate if someone could provide me some links / solutions that address my needs. Thanks! To anyone who thinks this question is a duplicate and wants to close it please bare in mind the following: I'm not looking for additional software, I know I can use Live Sync, Dropbox and so on but I'm asking this: how do I configure Windows 7 to sync files between my home network - no Internet required! Fine control over zoom and aspect ratio in VLC player

In VLC Player (v1.01), how do I zoom video and control aspect ratio with fine control, as is possible with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC)? The standard zoom appears to only support double, normal, quarter size etc, not useful to me at all. An example: I play an older music video file that is in 4:3 aspect ratio. In MPCHC I can use the number pad to zoom in small increments until I have removed the left and right letterbox bars and the video fills the whole screen. I can also stretch and move the video in small increments until I am happy with the aspect ratio and position. I could continue using MPCHC, but I have two displays and really like VLC feature enabling full-screen video on the main screen and the VLC interface (menus etc) on the second. I have not found a way to do this on MPCHC, if anyone knows I'd also be interested to hear.

UPNP/DLNA music player for Windows?

I'm looking for a UPNP/DLNA Client for Windows. The server is MediaTomb on a Ubuntu box. The clients are Windows (any, XP and up). I'm looking for a simplistic music player program but failed to identify any. I'm hoping for something in the style of Winamp or Windows Media Player. I've looked, but so far only been able to achieve playback on Windows with HTPC-ish software like XBMC, and on an android cellphone (several players for that there, all worked fine). Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not looking for an HTPC Suite (IE XBMC), I'm looking for a regular-looking music player.

Connecting HDMI MediaCenter PC to Standard Def TV

I just purchased a ASRock ION 330-HT-BD to use as my new Media Center. Sadly I still have a crappy standard-def old tube TV for the foreseeable future. The TV has Coax & Composite (Red, White, Yellow) inputs, and my new MediaCenterr has HDMI & VGA outputs. So my question is, how do I hook up the two together! All of the HDMI-to-Composite cables I have found explicitly state that they can not be used to hook a PC up to a TV. Any ideas?

Create bootable partition from image

I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition? Partition layout: 150GB OS X 50GB Ubuntu destination 5GB Ubuntu install image

Can't play blu ray on sony vaio fz

Hi. I have a Sony Vaio FZ (VGN-FZ31M) with a blu ray drive. I have just recently purchased the 2001 Space Odissey in blu ray but haven't been able to play on my laptop. When I try to play it with WMP i get this: "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD. The disc was created in a manner that the Player does not support." and this with VLC: "VLC cannot open MRL. Check log for details." I have once formatted the pc and done a clean install without the sony vaio recovery cd. Is it possible that it is necessary a specific blu ray driver that I have not installed? Thanks.

How to fix monitor detection on Windows 7?

Hi, I'm using Windows 7 + Windows Media Center for my HTPC. It works great except from one annoying issue. Whenever I turn off my TV while listening the music, the music stop for a second or while Windows 7 tries to figure out what monitor is attached. After that second it settles down on a default 800x640. While not a big deal, it is annoying as I don't want to have the TV on while playing music. Is there anyway to fix the monitor/disable monitor auto-detection on Windows 7 so it would not start recalibrating everything when I turn off my TV? Thanks, Boaz

Hide Content for Printing

Current, our users can view SCORM contents using frames. We would like to disable print or hide the content for printing. So far, we have tried: @media print { body { display:none } frameset {display:none} } The above line worked very inconsistently. For example, using IE8, the print preview does not show the content but when printing without preview it shows the content. Ideally we would like to disable printing altogether when our users launch any contents. If this can't be done, we would like to hide the print content so the users will print a blank page. Additionally, we would also like to disable the print screen option if possible. Please help!!!

Help: Best way to do a TV-out in 7300GT Nvidia video card?

I'm planning to recycle my old PC and build a Media Center using an open-source (C#) software called MediaPortal. My old PC has a GeForce 7300GT with a TV-out plug built-in. When I tested it last night, it wouldn't detect my JVC tv (CRT) using the current drivers. I even purchased a new copper-based TV-Out to RCA cable. I searched all 3 AV channels. The video card has 3 output ports: 2 DVI & 1 s-video. I used the s-video with a S-Video to RCA out cable. I swapped between PAL & NTSC So what I did was I downloaded the first version of an Nvidia driver for 7 series cards, but still even with the old console, it couldn't detect the TV. I'm running out of viable ideas. Anyone here had the same problem and fixed it? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you!

Office jukebox systems

We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.
