I do like the kind of work I do in our company. I also like the compensations. But lately, something in work environment makes me uncomfortable, to such an extent that, for instance, after a week off from work - even if totally exhausted by other activities; I get healthier. What move I make so that both my career and my health get along well? How do I use this situation for betterment ? Is it advisable to change the company in such a case ?

How does having assets saved on a secondary domain(s) reduce the load time of the website?

I went for an interview yesterday where I was asked this question: "How does having assets (images/videos) stored on a secondary domain (assets.example.com) reduce the load time of example.com?" To that I answered that by having the code "call" those assets from a secondary website it reduces the traffic that is coming to the main domain and therefore only applying bandwidth to the main domain vs having to also serve bandwidth to request assets. Is that correct? Also, If i am correct, would you say it makes sense to start new websites with this in mind or do you prefer having it done after large traffic rates are achieved?

Working in Germany (Munich) [closed]

My husband and I are relocating to Munich in August (He's German). I have been looking for jobs online since I heard that software developers are in great demand. And by the looks of it, seems to be correct. There are lots of offers on line but I have a problem, my german is not spectacular. I would rate it as basic. Good to be a tourist but not good to write anything formal, not even my cover letter. So I was wondering how hard is really going to be to find a job for me with virtually no german (I'm studying, but good german is not going to happen over night). Also, would it be possible to secure a job before arriving to Germany? I have nearly 10 years of working experience developing software, mostly in .net (c#, vb, winForms, asp.net) but I also know java. 3 years experience as a team leader for groups of up to 8 people. In the last couple of years I've been working mostly on digitalization of documents (such as birth certificates and the like) but I'm more than willing to try other fields Also I speak English, Spanish, Italian, a bit of portuguese and of course a bit of german.

Working alone vs with others

Being a student in a small school, there aren't a lot of people (well, there aren't any) that share the same passion or skill of programming that I have. I have been learning to program myself since the age of 9, and I believe I have reached the level where I am ready to do something more ambitious, as opposed to the little scripts and personal web design I do at the moment. The point is: would having a small group - or just another person - allow us to achieve greater things? If so, how would I begin building a team?

Possible Duplicates: Why did Facebook, Wordpress, vBulletin use PHP/MySQL? Why did Facebook use C++ beside PHP? While Facebook chose PHP and Twitter chose Ruby on Rails, I stopped and asked myself a question! why did they chose PHP and Ruby on Rails? Why not ASP.NET or Java? I feel i need a change and wanted to start programming, i have some experience (low-midd) with python and lisp, right now i am starting with c++ (stroustrup book)... Differences between a retail and wholesale website, and how difficult would it be to integrate them? [closed]

I was told to come here for some guidance, I know that my questions can be quite broad, but I just really want some kind of direction to go towards (links, articles, etc). So here it goes: For the past month I have been planning and started implementing a wholesale website, but plans got changed on me and I need to allow both retail and wholesale orders which will also depend on whether the account is a regular customer or also has a seller account. There are various types of products and it has been decided that I would use subcategories as tables to organize them and allow various specific item fields. So here are some of my specific questions: How different is the database structure for each item to be available for both wholesale and retail? Will it just be adding a quantity column and have two different pricing, or much more complicated? I am unaware if there's any price tables but would that be more difficult? They use Quickbooks POS software, how difficult/inefficient will it be to update inventory quantities if they have like 2000-4000 products? And what would be the best ways to extract the information and update the system? I know it export an excel spreadsheet so maybe a suggested php plugin for it? How difficult is this project in your professional opinion, and how big should a team usually be? (At the moment it is just me.) Projected time for planning, implementation, and quality assurance in accordance to team size? I am an entry level developer and I know that I do not have enough knowledge to direct myself on this website...What kind of web developer skills will I need to find to help me? (My company is willing to hire people to get this website done as fast as possible.) Also, what would be some great questionnaires to ask the product stakeholder about what he wants from the website? (He has made it clear he is neither computer or internet savvy...) Sorry for the amount of questions, I'm an entry level web developer and do not have a senior to look up to for guidance. I have knowledge in HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin. I have never used any frameworks like Zend, Magento, etc, and is doing this all from scratch. So far the website is built in an object oriented way, MVC architecture to the best of my abilities, but I have many doubts because I would really want to have this done right. I am very new to webdevelopment. I've been given this task to built an application to calculate final salary in the end of the month. The employees are callers and after every call they will get some form on which they will give their call summery like time duration. They are payed for each call depending on time duration. In the back end there will be sql database and some code to calculate the the final salary. Current they have to calculate the salary manually, they are just using google docs form.I have some idea that i need php in the front end sql in the back end but i am not clear about the whole picture please can someone give me a clear skeleton. My main question is what to use to calculate the salary from the database??And what should i use to create a front end form ??

How easy is it to change languages/frameworks professionally? [closed]

Forgive me for asking a career related question - I know that they can be frowned upon here, but I think that this one is general enough to be useful to many people. My question is: How easy/difficult is it to get a job using language/frameowork B, when your current job uses language/framework A? e.g. If you use C#/ASP.NET in your current job, how difficult would it be to get a job using python/django, or PHP/Zend, or whatever (the specifics of the example don't matter). Relatedly, if you work in client side scripting, but perhaps work on server-side projects in your own time, how difficult would it be to switch to server-side professionally? So, to sum up, does the choice of which languages/frameworks use at work tend to box you in professionally?

Applying Test Driven Development to a tightly coupled architecture

Hi all, I've recently been studying TDD, attended a conference and have dabbled in few tests and already I'm 100% sold, I absolutely love it TDD. As a result I've raised this with my seniors and they are prepared to give it a chance, so they have tasked me with coming up with a way to implement TDD in the development of our enterprise product. The problem is our system has evolved since the days of VB6 to .NET and implements alot of legacy technology and some far from best practice development techniques i.e. alot of business logic in the ASP.NET code behind and client script. The largest problem however is how our classes are tightly coupled with database access; properties, methods, constructors - usually has some database access in some form or another. We use an in-house data access code generator tool that creates sqlDataAdapters that gives us all the database access we could ever want, which helps us develop extremely quickly, however, classes in our business layer are very tightly coupled to this data layer - we aren't even close to implementing some form of repository design. This and the issues above have created me all sorts of problems. I have tried to develop some unit tests for some existing classes I've already written but the tests take ALOT longer to run since db access is required, not to mention since we use the MS Enterprise Caching framework I am forced to fake a httpcontext for my tests to run successfully which isn't practical. Also, I can't see how to use TDD to drive the design of any new classes I write since they have to be soo tightly coupled to the database ... help! Because of the architecture of the system it appears I can't implement TDD without some real hack which in my eyes just defeats the aim of TDD and the huge benefits that come with. Does anyone have any suggestions how I could implement TDD with the constraints I'm bound too? or do I need to push the repository design pattern down my seniors throats and tell them we either change our architecture/development methodology or forget about TDD altogether? :) Thanks

OpenGL Game development for the Desktop / Platform issues

Does anyone have experience writing professional OpenGL games on Windows? For the Mac, due to apple's control, the OS seems quite "uniform". For windows, due to different hardware, different drivers installed, etc ... the hardware base seems to have many many different configurations. In theory, OpenGL provides a API that abstracts all this away. In practice, many drivers are often buggy and have weird cases -- has this been a problem for developing games on Windows? Thanks!

Optimize Use of Ramdisk for Eclipse Development

We're developing Java/SpringSource applications with Eclipse on 32-bit Vista machines with 4GB RAM. The OS exposes roughly 3.3GB of RAM due to reservations for hardware etc. in the virtual address space. I came across several Ramdisk drivers that can create a virtual disk from the OS-hidden RAM and am looking for suggestions how best to use the 740MB virtual disk to speed development in our environment. The slowest part of development for us is compiling as well as launching SpringSource dm Server. One option is to configure Vista to swap to the Ramdisk. That works, and noticeably speeds up development in low memory situations. However, the 3.3GB available to the OS is often sufficient and there are many situations where we do not use the swap file(s) much. Another option is to use the Ramdisk as a location for temporary files. Using the Vista mklink command, I created a hard link from where the SpringSource dm Server's work area normally resides to the Ramdisk. That significantly improves server startup times but does nothing for compile times. There are roughly 500MB still free on the Ramdisk when the work directory is fully utilized, so room for plenty more. What other files/directories might be candidates to place on the Ramdisk? Eclipse-related files? (Parts of) the JDK? Is there a free/open source tool for Vista that will show me which files are used most frequently during a period of time to reduce the guesswork?

Test multiple domains using ASP.NET development server

I am developing a single web application that will dynamically change its content depending on which domain name is used to reach the site. Multiple domains will point to the same application. I wish to use the following code (or something close) to detect the domain name and perform the customizations: string theDomainName = Request.Url.Host; switch (theDomainName) { case "www.clientone.com": // do stuff break; case "www.clienttwo.com": // do other stuff break; } I would like to test the functionality of the above using the ASP.NET development server. I created mappings in the local HOSTS file to map www.clientone.com to 127.0.0.1, and www.clienttwo.com to 127.0.0.1. I then browse to the application with the browser using www.clinetone.com (etc). When I try to test this code using the ASP.net development server the URL always says localhost. It does NOT capture the host entered in the browser, only localhost. Is there a way to test the URL detection functionality using the development server? Thanks.

Newbie - eclipse workflow (PHP development)

Hi all - this is a bit of a newbie question but hoping I can get some guidance. I've been playing around with Eclipse for a couple months yet I'm still not completely comfortable with my setup and it seems like every time I install it to a new system I end up with different results. What I'm hoping to achieve is (I think) fairly standard. In my environment I'd like SVN (currently using Subclipse), FTP support (currently using Aptana plugin), debugging (going to use XDebug) and all the usual bells and whistles of development (code completion, refactoring, etc.) My biggest current issue is how to set up my environment to support both a 'development' and 'production' server. Optimally I would be able to work directly against the dev server (Eclipse on my Vista desktop against the VM Ubuntu dev server) and then push to production server (shared hosting). I'd prefer to work directly against the dev server (with no local project files, just using the Connections provided by Aptana) but I'm guessing this won't allow for code-completoin or all the other bells and whistles provided for development. Any thoughts? Kind of an open ended question, but maybe this could be an opportunity for some of you with a great deal of experience using Eclipse to describe your setups so people like me can get some insight into good ways to get set up.

What's the difference between UI development and front-end development?

I'm a front-end developer and really enjoy jQuery and JavaScript. I've built a lot a websites, done some good jQuery work and built a few JavaScript based applications and would really like to get in UI development. Or so I thought. I guessed it would be pretty similar to what I already do except maybe a little more JavaScript heavy but when I looked into it all the job specs said I needed to know about Scrum or Agile development, knowledge of testing frameworks and a good knowledge of JavaScript frameworks and custom events. So, from the specs I get the idea that a UI developer is actually a dedicated JavaScript developer. Is that the case? I understand (with much help from the users on stackoverflow), about JavaScript OO, inheritance, closures, custom events, debugging in Firefox or Aptana etc, and the people I work with seem to think I pretty OK at what I do but clearly my knowledge is not good enough to go for UI jobs. If anyone could tell me a little more about UI development and if there are any good resources for learning about it I would be most grateful as I couldn't find much on the internet.

Framework or CMS for php web development?

Hi all, I am a C++,Unix developer who has never dabbled in web development apart from creating simple HTML pages. I am going to change that and develop a website at a personal level soon. I am going to use php,mysql on a linux machine. In this regard I am browsing through relevant literature. The language isn't a problem but reading about CMS's and frameworks is confusing. And since I am new to web development, the number of CMS's and Frameworks are overwhelming. ? My question is do I need to have knowledge of one or more CMS' and/or Frameworks like Drupal,Joomla,Zend,Wordpress etc. If yes which is the best open source CMS' and/or Framework suggested for a newbie. ?? If the answer to the above question is yes, does the choice changes if one delves into the realms of commercial web development? Determining failing sectors on portable flash memory

I'm trying to write a program that will detect signs of failure for portable flash memory devices (thumb drives, etc). I have seen tools in the past that are able to detect failing sectors and other kinds of trouble on conventional mechanical hard drives, but I fear that flash memory does not have the same kind of predictable low-level access to the hardware due to the internal workings of the storage. Things like wear-leveling and other block-remapping techniques (to skip over 'dead' sectors?) lead me to believe that determining if a flash drive is failing will be difficult at best, if not impossible (short of having constant read failures and device unmounts). Flash drives at their end-of-life should be easy to detect (constant CRC discrepancies during reads and all-out failure). But what about drives that might be failing early? Are there any tell-tale signs like slower throughput speeds that might indicate a flash drive is going to fail much sooner than normal? Along the lines of detecting potentially bad blocks, I had considered attempting random reads/writes to a file close to or exactly the size of the entire volume, but even then is it possible that the drive might report sizes under its maximum capacity to account for 'dead' blocks? In short, is there any way to circumvent or at least detect (algorithmically or otherwise) the use of block-remapping or other life extension techniques for flash memory? Let me end this question by expressing my uncertainty as to whether or not this belongs on serverfault.com . This is definitely a hardware-related question, but I also desire a software solution - preferably one that I can program myself. If this question is misplaced, I will be happy to migrate it to serverfault - but I do need a programming solution. Please let me know if you need clarification :) Thanks!

DIY a simple .inf on an existing .sys?

In continuation of attempting to get an old Digi ST-1032 working on a new server, we've downgraded a server to Windows 2000 in an attempt to use the NT4 drivers. And it works, the old software setup works, finds the device on the SCSI bus, and connects the 32 ports to COM3..COM34 or any other set using the port remapper tool. The minor issue that remains is that Plug-and-Play still detects this device over SCSI and tries to wizard you into selecting a driver for it. Which doesn't exists (Digi Intl support confirms this device is so old, a 2000 or XP driver was never made). The exact name displayed is "DigiIntl ST-1032 SCSI Net Device" (Oddly enough, two devices get detected with this name, on two neighbouring LUN's, could one be the built-in terminator?) Is there a way to concoct a simple .inf that would (re-)register the existing sts.sys that appears to get registered by the (old) installer of the driver software?

Force RAID to read "exiled" disk?

We have a RAID 6 array (Infortrend EonStor DS S16F) that recently had two disks fail. Immediately prior to replacing these two disks, a third, good, disk was accidentally ejected from the array. After reinserting this disk it is marked as "exiled" by the array's firmware, and so even after replacing the two failed disks with new ones the array refuses to rebuild the logical volume and remains inaccessible. Since the temporarily-ejected disk is still functional and nothing has been written to the array since it was ejected, it seems that it should theoretically be possible to recover all the data on the array, but how can we convince the array to use the data from the "exiled" disk? Differences between KVR16N11H/8 and KVR16N11/8 memory except for height?

I accidentally ordered KVR16N11/8 instead of KVR16N11H/8 and I'm wondering if I'm going to have compability issues with my Intel DP67DE motherboard. When searching for compatible RAM on Kingstons site for that motherboard the KVR16N11H/8 RAM was one of the compatible ones. The KVR16N11/8 did not show up as compatible for that motherboard. The only difference I can see is that they have different physical height, or am I missing something?
