  Naming things well is arguably Job 1 for professional programmers. Yet we have all suffered from some bad naming choices from time to time. So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! • How do I get a right outer join in L2E?

  I have two tables that I set up through the VS Entity Data Model Diagram tool. I'm trying to do a right outer join and it doesn't return results from the 2nd table. I have set up a 0..1 to MANY relationship from the diagram tool. When I run a Linq-To-Entities query, it still defaults to an INNER JOIN. From my understanding of entities, if I set up the relationship using VS, when I join the tables, it should automagically figure out the join syntax based on the relationship I supply. It doesn't seem to be doing that. I am using EF v1 (not Linq-to-Sql). Query I'm running: from s in SomeTable join t in SomeOtherTable on s.ID equals t.ID select new { s.MyFieldName, t.MyOtherFieldName }

• How to notice unusual news activity

  Suppose you were able keep track of the news mentions of different entities, like say "Steve Jobs" and "Steve Ballmer". What are ways that could you tell whether the amount of mentions per entity per a given time period was unusual relative to their normal degree of frequency of appearance? I imagine that for a more popular person like Steve Jobs an increase of like 50% might be unusual (an increase of 1000 to 1500), while for a relatively unknown CEO an increase of 1000% for a given day could be possible (an increase of 2 to 200). If you didn't have a way of scaling that your unusualness index could be dominated by unheard-ofs getting their 15 minutes of fame.

• View bound to paged collection view not updating all of the time.

  I new to silverlight and trying to make a business application using the mvvm pattern and ria services. I have a view model class that contains a PagedCollectoinView and it is set to the item source of a datagrid. When I update the PagedCollectionView the datagrid is only updated the first time then after that subsequent changes to the data to not reflect in the view until after another edit. Things seem to be delayed one edit. Below is a summarized example of my xaml and code behind. • Adding ivars to NSManagedObject subclass

  When I create an entity using core data then generate a subclass of NSManagedObject from it I get the following output (in the .h): @class Foo; @interface Foo : NSManagedObject @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *name; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSSet *otherValues; @end However, in my .m file I want to make use of the name and otherValues values. Normally I would simply create a couple of ivars and then add the properties for them as I required. That way I can access them in my .m file easily. In this situation would it be acceptable to do this? Would adding ivars to the .h (for name and otherValues) cause any unusual behaviour in the persistance & retrieval of objects?

  I have two objects, a Trip and a Place. A Trip represents a journey from one Place to another Place, ie. a Trip needs a fromPlace and a toPlace. So, this is a 1-to-2 relationship, but I need to know which is the "from" and which is the "to". I am not sure how to model this in Core Data. I have created two entities (Trip, Place), and now I want to setup the relationship(s) so I have a fromPlace and a toPlace. Do I need to add an extra field on the Place entity called isFrom, or similar? If this was in a database, I would just have a id column on the Place table, and then two columns in the Trip table - fromPlaceId and toPlaceId. How do I achieve something similar in Core Data?

  Hi all, Here is the situation, in order to support our legacy system, we need to insert to a table whenever a user logs in. This is basically an CRUD operation, so it doesn't really make sense to create repository/entity/command/event for this since this doesn't tie to any business rules at all. The only benefit to create a CQRS command is that this database write can happen asynchronously under that model. Which is a better route to take? Use CQRS, and then call a stored proc. when handling that command? Just call database directly in the controller (I am using asp.net mvc)

  I'm using Hibernate validator 4.1 to validate my entity. I have a dashboard that I can access from the action : viewDashboard. We have the ADO.NET and with the more improved Entity Framework for Data Access. And ASP.NET for WEB UI. And even WCF for Facade and SOA. But what in the middle, what do we have for the Business Layer? Is it just Referenced DLLs? How do we deal with the Application Pulling this days?   I have a table with a column that will be encrypted by a trigger after the record is inserted. When I read the column, I need to apply a decrypt function in the hibernate domain class. While saving the object, the value of the column will be saved as such. While reading the column, apply a database function on the read data. @Formula and @Column annotation cannot be applied to an attribute in the entity class. How do I achieve this functionality without using one attribute for saving and another one with @Formula for reading it?

• Migrating shape sql to something equally powerful

  Hi, we are currently investigating a migration of an application that doesn't meet company standards. The application is built using VB6 and Shape SQL/Access. The application has about 120 reports by storing Shape SQL strings in a database which the user can modify using a wizard. Shape sql is not allowed at this company. We have investigated plain SQL, Linq, Entity Framework as alternatives... but all result in more complex solutions. Does anyone have another suggestion? • Why is the C# SerializedAttribute is sealed?

  I was trying to create an attribute that implies [Serializable] but I noticed that this SerializableAttribute class is sealed. In Java it was possible to create an interface (say, MyInterface) that is inherited from Serializable interface and so all the subclasses of MyInterface would also be serializable, even its sub-sub classes would be so. Let's say I am creating an ORM and I want customers to annotate their entity classes as [DatabaseEntity] but in order to make sure that entities are serializable, I also need to ask them to attribute their classes with extra [Serializable] which does not look quite compact and neat. I am wondering why SerializableAttribute class is sealed and why has Inherited=false which implies that subclasses of serializable class will not be serializable unless it is explicitly stated. What motives are behind these design choices?

• Unicode and PHP - am I doing something wrong?

  I'm using Kohana 3, which has full support for Unicode. I have this as the first child of my <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> The Unicode character I am inserting into is é as in Café. However, I am getting the triangle with a ? (as in could not decode character). As far as I can tell in my own code, I am not doing any string manipulation on the text. In fact, I have placed the accent straight into a view's PHP file and it is still not working. I copied the character from this page: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/00e9/index.htm I've only just started examining PHP's Unicode limitations, so I could be doing something horribly wrong. So, how do I display this character? Do I need to resort to the HTML entity?

• How do I set default values on new properties for existing entities after light weight core data migration?

  I've successfully completed light weight migration on my core data model. My custom entity Vehicle received a new property 'tirePressure' which is an optional property of type double with the default value 0.00. When 'old' Vehicles are fetched from the store (Vehicles that were created before the migration took place) the value for their 'tirePressure' property is nil. (Is that expected behavior?) So I thought: "No problem, I'll just do this in the Vehicle class:" - (void)awakeFromFetch { [super awakeFromFetch]; if (nil == self.tirePressure) { [self willChangeValueForKey:@"tirePressure"]; self.tirePressure = [NSNumber numberWithDouble:0.0]; [self didChangeValueForKey:@"tirePressure"]; } } Since "change processing is explicitly disabled around" awakeFromFetch I thought the calls to willChangeValueForKey and didChangeValueForKey would mark 'tirePresure' as dirty. But they don't. Every time these Vehicles are fetched from the store 'tirePressure' continues to be nil despite having saved the context.

• Google analytics-style custom report builder UI

  I'm looking for a reporting engine/UI that can be integrated into a product, which has a UI along the lines of Google Analytics' Custom Reports builder. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The data is in our case is not page views/visitors/etc, but is similar in nature, in that there are limited entities or types of data, but each entity has many attributes/columns and many different ways of aggregating data (or in GA-style speak, metrics and dimensions). The analytics-style UI is very intuitive and allows many reports to be created in powerful ways, without having to know SQL. I have preference for a web-based tool (seeing that it is 2010 and this is a web app -- I mention only because it seems the vast majority of reporting tools still have only a non-web-based creation tool).

• Performance - User defined query / filter to search data

  What is the best way to design a system where users can create their own criterias to search data ? By "design" i mean, data storage, data access layer and search structure. We will actually refactor an existing application which is written in C# and ASP .NET and we don't want to change the infrastructure. Our main issue is performance and we use MSSQL and DevExpress to build queries. Some queries run in 4-5 minutes and all the columns included in the queries have indexes. When i check queries, i see that DevExpress builds too many "exists" clauses and i'm not happy with that because i have doubts that some of these queries skip some indexes. What may be the alternatives to DevExpress? NHibernate or Entity Framework? Can we build dynamic criteria system and store these to database in both of them ? And also do we need any alternative storage like a lucene index or OLAP database?

  In DDD, Repository takes care of saving and retrieving domain objects and also serves as collection of Aggregate Roots. My question is how do you retrieve the information for those child entities (let's say from DB) of an Aggregate where basic rule is Repository should just hold collection of Aggregate Roots (parent object) and not child objects? For example: User (parent object) Orders (child object) User domain object is stored in user table and Orders are stored in another table.   I have a few (hopefully) simple questions about aggregate roots in domain driven design: Is it okay to have an aggregate root as a property of another aggregate root? Is it okay to have a given entity inside two or more aggregate roots? My final question is a bit more involved. I have a website that has a few entities that really belong to a "website" aggregate root. They are 'News', 'Products', and 'Users'. There isn't a 'Website' table in the database, but a 'Website' seems like a good aggregate root for these three entities. How is this usually achieved? Thanks!

• Is there a way to hide annotations in Netbeans or Eclipse?

  Maybe a dumb question, but it would be nice if there was a way to hide or collapse Java annotations when viewing source in Netbeans (or Eclipse). I'm not finding an option and a quick search didn't turn anything up. Is this one of those "you should never want to do that, code folding is a sin!" things? Personally I'd find it useful for annotated entity classes. All the hibernate / etc annotations are just fluff that I never look at once my mapping is working fine. It's similar to imports, really. (Yes, I can use XML instead of annotations, which I might start doing. But I was just wondering...)
