  When I type a command $ grep \h junk then shell should interpret \h as \h as two pairs of \ become \ each, and grep in turn, should interpret \h as \h as \ becomes \, so grep should search for a pattern \h in junk, which it is doing successfully. But it's not working for \$. Please explain why ?

• Connect to powershell through SSH with keyexchange?

  I have little experience with Windows systems. Coming from a Linux background I was wondering if there is a way that I can ssh to powershell from a Linux shell? If this is not possible, is there a key exchange like way to connect from powershell to powershell? I prefer it if I do not need to enter a password for every single server every time. If this all sounds a bit crazy and there are better ways that windows does this, then feel free to share.

• Is it possible for a directory to get unlinked while its contained files remain?

  I used to wonder why deleting directories via PHP or shell wasn't as easy as it was in Windows with just clicking delete. I realize now that deleting is simply unlinking files from the file allocation table, so to delete a directory, you must unlink all the files inside it. Is it ever possible for the directory's entry to be removed, but not those of the files inside it? Do operating systems periodically check for files that can't be reached in the file system?

• What is the easiest way to scale a Quicktime MOV to a different size in Windows?

  I've tried a ffmpeg, and it doesn't know how to read Quicktime MOV, neither does VirtualDub. Avidemux crashes when I open the Quicktime MOV. In Linux, I'd just use MEncoder, but I'm telling someone over the phone how to resize this 1080p MOV file, so having them use MEncoder in a command shell would be annoying. Any ideas?

• Removing files on a limit access backup server

  I have an account on a backup server but it's full, so I need to clear it. The problem is that It's only accessible via FTP, SFTP and Rsync (no shell) Deleting lots of small files (as in, multiple full Linux installations), which I have to do, is undoable over FTP/SFTP because it cannot recursively delete directories in one command (Yes, most clients will fake this by issueing all the seperate commands for you but the overhead is huge and the process takes several days...well it crashes before that). What do I do?

  I'm trying to configure the cygwin to work with TWiki, I have to input this in the Cygwin bash shell: mount -b -s c:/... but it doesn't recognize the "-s", I already fixed the problem with -b, it changed the syntax and now is "mount -o binary" for the "mount -b"part. But now it says unknown option with the "-s" anyone?? help?? or what does the -s mean, so I can look it up :S

• Run Java Project from Ubuntu Terminal?

  I have a small java project that handle connections. In order to run it from the terminal I have to cd into the folder that contains the source and run the following command: java -cp classes com.packagename.mainclass Where classes is the folder that contains the classes. I want ubuntu to run this application on startup, is there a Java command I can use? Or am I just better off creating a shell script? Thanks!

• Preventing some apps from appearing on the start menu on vista

  Vista start menu shows your most frequently used apps, which is great, I love it. However, there are some apps which I use frequently through shell or such, that I do not want to appear on that menu. Winrar, Media Player Classic, Infranview... I can right click on it to remove it, but it'll return to the menu shortly, how can I set it so that those apps never appear on the start menu. Thanks.

• Best way to Start Over on my Dreamhost server?

  I have made a mess of my Dreamhost slice and want to know if there's a way to clean install/fresh install/wipe everything and start over? Is there a shell script to do this or would I have to do it through the Dreamhost admin panel or even contact Dreamhost to get them to do it for me?   Using Solaris and Linux servers and OpenSSH, is it possible to prevent users from copying files using "scp" while still allowing shell access with "ssh"? I realize that 'ssh $server "cat file" ' type file accesses are much harder to prevent, but I need to see about stopping "scp" for starters. Failing that, is there a way to reliably log all SCP access on the server side through syslog?

  I see lots of documentation on how to manually set up a network bridge and then manually add vm's tun devices to these bridges and then write a shell script that glues it all together. lots of work, very manual, and not impressive. On the other hand if you want to use NAT to KVM+libvirt VMs to the network you just click the new network button in the virt-manager gui and relax. Am I missing "the easy way" of causing a VM to share the physical network with the host?

  The default behavior for 'less' is to clear the screen after quitting. This behavior stopped when I started using: export TERM=xterm Now 'less' leaves the last page I viewed on the screen, and I want to re-enable the default behavior of clearing the screen. Googling this problem I found that people use the following command in their ~/.screenrc: altscreen on I'm not sure if this is a mac-issue but I don't have this command available.   I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. • vsftp hangs at "150 Here comes the directory listing."

  In a vsftpd server enviroment, shared various directories from nfs mountpoints, I can log in without problem, but when I send the first "ls", the vsftp give me the directory listing: lftp [email protected]:~ ls -rw-rw-rw- 1 1160 1016 392 Jun 06 09:28 test.gif but not give me the shell again (lftp client). In the server log I can see that the last message is: "150 Here comes the directory listing." Why happend this?

• Is it theoretically possible to toggle hidden files without relaunching Finder?

  There are several ways how to toggle hidden files - via shell command, or AppleScript, or Automator action, or even Dashboard widget. All of them close and reopen Finder windows, which is quite annoying. On the other hand, for Open File dialog one can easily toggle hidden files by pressing Command+Shift+Period. Is it possible to avoid relaunching Finder? At least theoretically?

• scp stalls and ssh sessions freeze up (but eventually start again)

  I am running ubuntu on various computers on a home network. Some are on 9.04x64, some 10.04x64 and one 9.04x32. Running scp with a large file starts out at 2.1 mbps and drops down to about 200k, stalling and dropping until the transfer is complete. I've noticed this when I have a secure shell open on any of these servers as well. I have tried this with 2 different routers, both brand new, different brands.
