• Rails 2.3.5: How does one add an error when it doesn't make sense to put it in a validation?

  I recently was trying to add errors.add_to_base code in the middle of some model logic and was wondering why it wasn't showing up in my view that was iterating over all errors. I then ran across this e-mail which explains why: http://groups.google.com/group/rubyonrails-talk/browse_thread/thread/e045ec1dead1ff06?pli=1 The question is then, how does one add errors with add_to_base if it doesn't make sense to put them into a validate method? I have some complex logic. The model needs to talk to a has_many relationship which has its own relationships that go through a myriad of conditionals to figure out if a request makes sense. It's nothing that can be tied to a validate method easily. How does one add errors then accordingly?

  How do you put an "IF DEBUG" condition in a c# program so that, at run time, it will ignore a set of code if you are running in Debug mode and yet, execute a block of code if the program is not running in debug mode? A situation where this can be used is if a time stamp is taken at the start of a block and another time stamp is taken at the end. THey will hardly differ at run time. Yet, if you are stepping through the code in debug mode, they will differ a lot, and error conditions in an "if block" might be kicked off leading to the untimely (pun) execution of some code.

  I have a general question about best practice in OO Delphi. Currently, I put try-finally blocks anywhere I create an object to free that object after usage (to avoid memory leaks). E.g.: aObject := TObject.Create; try aOBject.AProcedure(); ... finally aObject.Free; end; instead of: aObject := TObject.Create; aObject.AProcedure(); .. aObject.Free; Do you think it is good practice, or too much overhead? And what about the performance?

  I have a long list of items (say, a few million items) in a mysql table, let's call it mytable and it has the field mytable.itemid. The items are given an order, and can be re=ordered by the user by drag and drop. If I add a field called mytable.order and just put numbers in them, it creates problems: what if I want to move an item between 2 other items? Then all the order fields have to be updated? That seems like a nightmare. Is there a (scalable) way to add order to a table that is different from just giving every item a number, order by that, and do loads of SQL queries everytime the order is changed?

Most of my unit testing will be done in the service layer as this will contain all the business logic. So I will be mocking out the repo. In some cases I will query my a repo from my controller(say I just need all users in the database and I am not doing any business logic for it). So I am thinking that I need to have ninject used in my framework project. Where is the best place to put it so I can use them against my repos in my service layers?

• Is it possible to put a form control on its own thread?

  I'm using a DataGridView and some operations that I do cause it to become unresponsive for periods of time. Normally I would put data processing in its own thread to make the form more responsive, but in this case it's the DataGridView itself that's taking so long. This leads me to wonder whether it's possible to have the main form on one thread and the DataGridView on another thread so it doesn't prevent the main form from responding. I completely understand that doing so is probably not 'safe' and likely opens up a can of worms that makes it hardly worth trying and I fully expect this post will be getting down votes for merely suggesting such a ridiculous idea. Is this possible? And if so how would you go about it?

  I have a simple .NET app that makes a SOAP call to a third party Axis web service. When I trace the HTTP traffic, I see that the Request looks fine, however I'm getting an exception: "Response is not well-formed XML." The return object is null, as it seems the XML can't be deserialized. One question regarding the various namespace declarations inside the wsdl. Several of these declarations point to URLs / domains that no longer exist. Could this cause any problems?   I am troubleshooting the setup of Varnish 3.x on my Ubuntu server. I'm running Drupal 7 on two sites set up on the box, via named-based vhosts. Before trying to get Varnish to play nice with Drupal I'm trying to just get Varnish to a PNG from cache. I can already do simple apps that perform gesture recognition but am not sure where to hook in the gesture views/obj with an IME. Here is a starting skeleton of what I have for the IME so far.   I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server.
