• iPhone Accelerometer Values

  My question is about the iPhone accelerometer. Does the accelerometer measure acceleration or movement of the iPhone? What I mean is if I hold the iPhone and go from 0mph to 60mph, I would expect the measure of acceleration to increase in value from 0 to 60, but once I reach 60, I expect the value to return to 0 since I am "no longer accelerating" but am moving at a constant speed. Now if the accelerometer measure motion, I would expect it to register 0 to 60 and continue to provide a change in value as I move forward at 60mph. Sorry, I looked at a few books, programmed some code (values seemed to small to give a recognizable result over short distances or speeds), and a lot of web searches, and I am trying to get an answer to this question. • How can I get my UserControl to look like a ComboBox?

  I have a user control containing a TextBox, ToggleButton and Popup, just like the real ComboBox. Now my problem is to style it so that it looks just like the normal ComboBox. In Blend, I can "Edit Template/Edit a Copy..." of a real ComboBox to get the bits and pieces I need to get it to look right. For one Windows theme (Aero). If the application is run on another theme (e.g Luna), the control does not change its look, it still has the Aero look. Do I have to supply a style/template for each Windows theme, or can I somehow get hold of (at run-time) the default ComboBox style and apply it to my UserControl? Instead of making a UserControl, I have tried modifying a real ComboBox to my needs, but I just couldn't get it to work. How can I replace ALL the logic of a ComboBox with my own?

• Database design: one huge table or separate tables?

  Currently I am designing a database for use in our company. We are using SQL Server 2008. The database will hold data gathered from several customers. The goal of the database is to acquire aggregate benchmark numbers over several customers. Recently, I have become worried with the fact that one table in particular will be getting very big. Each customer has approximately 20.000.000 rows of data, and there will soon be 30 customers in the database (if not more). A lot of queries will be done on this table. I am already noticing performance issues and users being temporarily locked out. My question, will we be able to handle this table in the future, or is it better to split this table up into smaller tables for each customer?

  I'm writing a SQL statement to select a user on a table if that user does not exist on another table, then I want to pull in all their data from another table then I'll be outputting all that in Coldfusion. How do I do this? I have tried, my atempt is below: pro_profile == All employees mod_userStatus == All Professional Staff members I am doing the not exists to remove professional stuff to just get our student staff. mod_StudentCertifications is a listing of the certifications they (students) hold. If we do an AND statement between the where statements it returns no users, or only users that meet both conditions, if we do an OR it will return users with only 1 condition. I need it first Match the not exists then proceed to the exists statement. Is that do able? • How to trigger Mouse-Over on iPhone?

  This might seem like a really dumb question, but I am writing an application and I have come across where my mouse-over, mouse-click and mouse-hover need different events bound to them. Now on Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. It all works as expected. However, on my iPhone the actions will not trigger. Now my question is are their any specific ways I can have the Mouse-Over essentially be fired when I hold my finger down and trigger an event? An example where this doesn't work is right on this website when you hover over a comment it is supposed to display the +1 or flag icon. I am using jquery.

• Value of A.S. Degree in Programming

  I am in a quite unusual family situation. For the next two years, I have to stay at home where the only post-secondary institution available is a community college. After two years, I will have to start earning a living. I do not really have any real-world programming experience to put on my résumé. I did some not-too-advanced work in PHP for family and friends, and I’m pretty sure that I want to program for a living. I have been working on an A.S. Degree in Computer Programming and Analysis since fall. My question regarding the degree is: is it worth anything to potential employers or am I just wasting my time? Is there a better way to spend the oncoming two years? If I could get an internship and some experience, would that hold more weight than a two-year degree without experience?

• How do I cancel a text selection after the initial mousedown event?

  I'm trying to implement a pop-up menu based on a click-and-hold, positioned so that a (really) slow click will still trigger the default action, and with the delay set so that a text-selection gesture won't usually trigger the menu. What I can't seem to do is cancel the text-selection in a way that doesn't prevent text-selection in the first place: returning false from the event handler (or calling $(this).preventDefault()) prevents the user from selecting at all, and the obvious $().trigger('mouseup') doesn't doesn't do anything with the selection at all. This is in the general context of a page, not particular to a textarea or other text field. e.stopPropogation() doesn't cancel text-selection. I'm not looking to prevent text selections, but rather to veto them after some short period of time, if certain conditions are met.

  Any time there is an update within my music community (song comment, artist update, new song added, yadda yadda yadda), a new row is inserted in my "updates" table. The row houses the artist id involved along with other information (what type of change, time and date, etc). My users have a "favorite artists" section where they can do just that -- mark artists as their favorites. As such, I'd like to create a new feature that shows the user the changes made to their various favorite artists. How should I be doing this efficiently? SELECT * FROM table_updates WHERE artist_id = 1 and artist_id = 500 and artist_id = 60032 Keep in mind, a user could have 43,000 of our artists marked as a favorite. Thoughts?

• LINQ to SQL DB Connections not closing

  I am using LINQ to SQL in an asp.net mvc application. I am calling stored procedures via ajax calls. The active connections for 2-3 users goes to 100 active connections. and then server timeouts happen. I then used IOC -autofac to resuse the same repository that has a datacontext. now tho i get an active connection on the SQL server per loggedin user plus one. I have never seen this before. Why wouldnt Lin2sql not drop a connection when not in use? would calling a stored procedure in an ajax call in a loggedin session creat an a new active connection? Could a Stored Procedure with loops and or a waitfor hold open a connection??

• Bitmap manipulation as a referenced object

  I am working with a Bitmap object that I add annotations or copyright material to the image and then return the modified bitmap. My problem is that the Bitmap won't hold the changes made to it as it moves along the chain. I am treating it as a reference type and would assume that as it gets passed to each class it would carry the changes made to it. I have verified that the code inside of the MarkImage() classes does function, but which ever one gets called last is the one that has changes.   Hiya, Basically I have a table which is used to hold employee work wear details. It is formed of the columns: EmployeeID, CostCentre, AssociateLevel, IssueDate, TrouserSize, TrouserLength, TopSize & ShoeSize. An employee can be assigned a pair of trousers, a top and shoes at the same time or only one or two pieces of clothing. As we all know sepeoples sizes and employee levels can change which is why I need help really. I need to be able to select the most recent clothes size and associate level for each item of clothing for each employee. So for example if employee '54664LSS' was given a pair of 'XL' trousers and a 'L' top on 24/03/11 but then received a 'M' top on 26/05/10. Then the values of the 'M' sized top and the 'L' sized trousers would need to be returned. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty stuck :(. Thanks.

• Threading and iterating through changing collections

  In C# (console app) I want to hold a collection of objects. All objects are of same type. I want to iterate through the collection calling a method on each object. And then repeat the process continuously. However during iteration objects can be added or removed from the list. (The objects themselves will not be destroyed .. just removed from the list). Not sure what would happen with a foreach loop .. or other similar method. This has to have been done 1000 times before .. can you recommend a solid approach?

  Hi, I need to work with many images, and I can't hold them as UIImage in memory because they are too big. I also need to change colors of image and merge them on the fly. Creating UIImage from underlying NSData, change color, and combine them when you can't have many images on memory is fairly slow. (as far as I can get) I thought maybe I can store underlying CGLayerRef(for image that will be combined) and CGContextRef(the resulting combined image). I am new to drawing world, and not sure if CGLayerRef or CGContextRef is smaller in memory than UIImage. I recently heard that w*h image takes up w*h*4 bytes in memory. Does CGLayerRef or CGContextRef also take up that much memory? Thank you

• convert flv to mp3 with Java

  Hi, I'm pretty new in developing programs in Java. I'm currently writing a program that converts a flv video into mp3. I have already written such a program in Visual Studio.net C#, but the Problem is, that it isn't cross platform compatible... I used the ffmpeg binary to convert the video into mp3, but I can't find ffmpeg binaries for Mac and Linux. (if so, I could start the specific binaries from java, depending on the OS) So I tried to convert the video with Xuggle, but the final mp3 has 0 bytes. • Programmatic binding in Silverlight

  I'm missing the boat on something here, kids. This keeps rearing its head and I don't know what's going on with it, so I hope my homeys here can help. When working in Silverlight, when I create bindings in my c# code, they never hold up when the application is running. The declarative bindings from my xaml seem ok, but I'm doing something wrong when I create my bindings in C#. I'm hoping that there is something blindingly obvious I'm missing. • How much more productive is an extra monitor?

  I am mulling over whether to buy a new monitor, to go along side my current setup of two 24 (ish) inch monitors. What I want to know is whether this is worth the money (probably around £200)? I think most of us will agree that two monitors is much more productive than one when programming and developing (Jeff Atwood has said this many times on his blog, and I imagine that most of you are fans of his), but is three much more productive than two? What I'm worried about is that I will have so much space that one monitor will be used for things that are not related to the task (music, facebook etc.) and it will actually make me less productive.

  I often go to a site to look stuff up. I thought to myself: "Hold on. I can program. Why am I going to this site manually when I can write a piece of software that does it for me?". And so I started. I'm using C#, so I found WebClient and Uri. I've managed to get the source code for the site, yet the problem occurred that the specific data I'm looking for is generated via AJAX, after the source code has loaded. So that's my problem. How can I get that code, if it needs to be requested via an AJAX call first?

  Sorry, this is probably a terrible question. I've JUST started learning python today. I've been reading a Byte of Python. Right now I have a project for Python that involves time. I can't find anything relating to time in Byte of Python, so I'll ask you: How can I run a block for a user specified amount of time and then break? For example (in some pseudo-code): time = int(raw_input('Enter the amount of seconds you want to run this: ')) while there is still time left: #run this block or even better: import sys time = sys.argv[1] while there is still time left: #run this block Thanks for any help. Also, additional online guides and tutorials would be much appreciated. I really like Byte of Python. Dive into Python can't quite hold my attention, though. I suppose I should suck it up and try harder to read that one.

• Am I underestimating MySQL ?

  Hi I'm about to implement a feature on my website that recommends content to users based on the content they already have in their library (a la Last.fm). A single table holds all the records of the content they have added, so a row might look something like: -------------------- | userid | content | -------------------- | 28 | a | -------------------- When I want to recommend some content for a user, I use a query to get all the user id's that have content a added in their library. Then, out of those user id's, I make another query that finds the next most common content among those users (fx. 'b'), and show that to the user. My problem is when I'm thinking about the big picture here. Say that eventually my site will hold something like 500.000 rows in the table, will this make the MySQL response very slow or am I underestimating MySQL here?

• Using std::bad_alloc for C pointers

  I'm using a library written in C in a C++ project. I'd like to use C++ exceptions to handle C errors. In particular, it would be nice to have an exception thrown if an allocation fails. I can do this in constructors of classes which hold C-style pointers to C structs : if (c_object == NULL) throw std::bad_alloc(); But if the class is responsible for several C objects they are no ways of free-ing all already allocated pointers since the destructor isn't called. I have a feeling I could use smart-pointers, but I don't have much experience with them. What's more, I have to have access to the original C pointers to use the C api properly. Is there an elegant solution to this ?

• Is it possible to creating a Service without starting it?

  Hello all, I wonder, is it possible to create a Service, set some data, and then start it? I haven't come across a thread specific to this problem, so I would like to know if it is possible (if it is known of course). My problem is that I have a Service which listens to a DatagramSocket, but the socket in question needs to be set after creation, but before the start of the Service. The setting of the socket happens through the use of a Broadcast (I broadcast 2 Strings which hold the IP-Address & Port and the BroadcastReceiver then constructs a socket for me). When the Service is started, a Thread will start to run and listen to the supposedly created socket. This, sadly, doesn't happen. The socket will remain null and I can't set it when the Thread is running (This is another issue I hope to tackle in the future, if anybody got any ideas about this, please notify me). So, is what I want possible, or should I come up with another construct for achieving this goal?

• A non-blocking server with java.io

  Everybody knows that java IO is blocking, and java NIO is non-blocking. In IO you will have to use the thread per client pattern, in NIO you can use one thread for all clients. Now my question follows: is it possible to make a non-blocking design using only the Java IO api. (not NIO) I was thinking about a pattern like this (obviously very simplified); List<Socket> li; for (Socket s : li) { InputStream in = s.getInputStream(); byte[] data = in.available(); in.read(data); // processData(data); (decoding packets, encoding outgoing packets } Also note that the client will always be ready for reading data. What are your opinions on this? Will this be suitable for a server that should at least hold a few hundred of clients without major performance issues?

  Hi all, I am creating dynamic label and textbox based on the number of values from the database for the selected item of the dropdownlist. Then the dynamic labels will have the names and the text box with the values. To retain the values of these controls im using Page_init event. So im using cache to hold the selectteditem from the dropdownlist. Problem: The process is going fine. But if i try to refresh the page no items are selected in the dropdown list but the cache is not getting clear so using this cache value dynamic control are creating. Geetha
