• Network manager broadband modem BUG

  just upgraded to ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04 using wvdial to connect to the internet (network manager doesn't detect my modem Huawei E367 ), though the new network manager detected my modem and asked me the enter the PIN, it doesn't connect, it shows my provider (Orange TN) and the signal (2 bars) but dosn't connect and I can't clic on the name of my broadband (ORANGE TN) . Just hoping that there will be a bug-fix for it or any other solution so I can go back to using the network manger :)

  Can the utility "Installation Monitor" from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools for administrative tasks be used on newer OS's, specifically, Windows Server 2008 R2. The main thing I am concerned about is it may error will not track things correctly without letting me know that that it errored due to how Windows has changed between 2000 and today. If that is not the correct tool to use to monitor what a application is writing to the hard drive and registry, can you recommend me what I should use instead?

• oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

  I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

• I.T. Chargeback : Core to Cloud Computing

  Contributed by Mark McGill Consolidation and Virtualization have been widely adopted over the years to help deliver benefits such as increased server utilization, greater agility and lower cost to the I.T. organization. These are key enablers of cloud, but in themselves they do not provide a complete cloud solution. Building a true enterprise private cloud involves moving from an admin driven world, where the I.T. department is ultimately responsible for the provisioning of servers, databases, middleware and applications, to a world where the consumers of I.T. resources can provision their infrastructure, platforms and even complete application stacks on demand. Switching from an admin-driven provisioning model to a user-driven model creates some challenges. How do you ensure that users provisioning resources will not provision more than they need? How do you encourage users to return resources when they have finished with them so that others can use them? While chargeback has existed as a concept for many years (especially in mainframe environments), it is the move to this self-service model that has created a need for a new breed of chargeback applications for cloud. Enabling self-service without some form of chargeback is like opening a shop where all of the goods are free. A successful chargeback solution will be able to allocate the costs of shared I.T. infrastructure based on the relative consumption by the users. Doing this creates transparency between the I.T. department and the consumers of I.T. When users are able to understand how their consumption translates to cost they are much more likely to be prudent when it comes to their use of I.T. resources. This also gives them control of their I.T. costs, as moderate usage will translate to a lower charge at the end of the month. Implementing Chargeback successfully create a win-win situation for I.T. and the consumers. Chargeback can help to ensure that I.T. resources are used for activities that deliver business value. It also improves the overall utilization of I.T. infrastructure as I.T. resources that are not needed are not left running idle. Enterprise Manager 12c provides an integrated metering and chargeback solution for Enterprise Manager Targets. This solution is built on top of the rich configuration and utilization information already available in Enterprise Manager. It provides metering not just for virtual machines, but also for physical hosts, databases and middleware. Enterprise Manager 12c provides metering based on the utilization and configuration of the following types of Enterprise Manager Target: Oracle VM Host Oracle Database Oracle WebLogic Server Using Enterprise Manager Chargeback, administrators are able to create a set of Charge Plans that are used to attach prices to the various metered resources. These plans can contain fixed costs (eg. $10/month/database), configuration based costs (eg. $10/month if OS is Windows) and utilization based costs (eg. $0.05/GB of Memory/hour) The self-service user provisioning these resources is then able to view a report that details their usage and helps them understand how this usage translates into cost. Armed with this information, the user is able to determine if the resources are delivering adequate business value based on what is being charged. Figure 1: Chargeback in Self-Service Portal Enterprise Manager 12c provides a variety of additional interfaces into this data. The administrator can access summary and trending reports. Summary reports allow the administrator to drill-down through the cost center hierarchy to identify, for example, the top resource consumers across the organization. Figure 2: Charge Summary Report Trending reports can be used for I.T. planning and budgeting as they show utilization and charge trends over a period of time. Figure 3: CPU Trend Report We also provide chargeback reports through BI Publisher. This provides a way for users who do not have an Enterprise Manager login (such as Line of Business managers) to view charge and usage information. For situations where a bill needs to be produced, chargeback can be integrated with billing applications such as Oracle Billing and Revenue Management (BRM). • Why can't I see my Hardrive for my compaq mini 110c from A windows Xp installation on usb stick?

I've downloaded mass storage driverpack and slipstreamed them into the install. when the bootup begins I press f6 at the appropriate screen to enable sata drivers for my harddrive. Then it comes to the partition/harddrive selection screen, I only see my usb flash stick. I'm at my wits end with this problem. I need to install xp.

• How to change screen resolution for installation

  I am trying to install Unity on an old computer with a 1.7 ghz cpu but the installation windows only show the top quarter of the window (so unable to see or select all the prompts in the window). I have tired going to system settings, but because I cannot see all of windows, I cannot change system settings to make the resolution smaller. Is there any way to change the resolution so that I can see the full window so that I can complete the installation?

• PHP/Oracle Connectivity randomly "drops out"

  Hi! Here's the current situation - I have two web servers (for now named A and B) and two database servers (named C and D). The web servers are quite old, and are running an early version of Apache 2 + PHP4, while the DB servers are running Oracle 9i and 10g respectively. We're experiencing a strange problem connecting (via PHP code) to database A while on web server B only. Web server A has no issues at all... Randomly, web server B will report a "Not connected to Oracle" error (3114). I can't see a real pattern with this, but refreshing a few times seems to fix the issue. Apparently there are no drop-outs on the network interface, which leads me to believe that there's some misconfiguration between PHP/Apache and Oracle (which uses connection pooling). We're running SunOS 5.8... Any ideas?
