• MacBook for django development?

  Hi, I'm about to buy a new laptop (Asus G62) to replace my old ubuntu desktop. I will use it mostly for django development (and some legacy win32 stuff in a virtualbox). However, since I will need to do some iPhone development in the near future, I'm starting to think that it might be a wiser to buy a MacBook Pro, instead of the Asus and later a cheap (so to speak...) MacBook. How well suited is a MacBook Pro for Django development? I currently use WingIDE on Linux and love it, how does the Mac version compare to the linux one? Is the Ubuntu - Mac OS transition complicated? Will I be able to leverage my Linux knowledge? OTOH, I'm your average nerd, so I'm not sure if I'm cool enough for a Mac. Besides, having a double chin, a black turtle neck is completely out of question. Thanks in advance!

• When does innovative software development shows?

  I've been working as a software developer for almost a year (not much though) in a corporate environment but all I've done so far is a raw software implementation of company needs. Senior coworkers don't seem to be doing some fairly different stuff. In fact their "benefit" for being experienced is simply an app design and getting their hands on new projects first. My elder software developer friend's jobs don't seem to differ from the overall picture. Currently I'm a student of a CS department and what I really want to bring in this world is some innovative(not new but innovative) stuff that haven't been there. Something as great as google wave or JARVIS (if that can be done at all) or even much better, but yet it looked like that's not possible. The question is: when do people in a corporate environment choose to create something innovative? (from your experience/thoughts)

  I've looked on SO and it seems that most people have been recomending books as the best iphone development resource due to the lack of resources on the web. I've seen the book the The Pragmatic Programmer: iPhone SDK development been recomended a few times. I'm planning to go buy a couple of books. Which should I go for? Please give reason :) A bit of background : I have a strong background in C and I've played around with Cocoa so something iphone specific would be best ( but I'm open for suggestions ;)) Update I'm not looking for simple listings of iphone SDK related books, I can google that ;) I want books that people are reading/have read and would recomend :) Final Update I just ordered my copy of Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK. My main reasons on chosing it are that it's already in print (unlike the pragmatic one) and I looked at the preview on their website and I liked it.

  Something I think Jeff & Joel touched on in an early stackoverflow podcast, though I don’t remember if they reached a conclusion: which curriculum is better preparation for a career as a developer and software entrepreneur, computer science in the liberal arts college, or software engineering in the engineering school? or, put another way, which credential should I look for in someone being added to my team, or to hire for my company (if I had one . . . )?   I am looking for TDD resources that are specific to Rails. I've seen the Rails Guide: The Basics of Creating a Rails Plugin which really spurred my interest in the topic. I have the Agile Development with Rails book and I see there's some testing-related information there. However, it seems like the author takes you through the steps of building the app, then adds testing afterward. This isn't really Test Driven Development. Ideally, I'd like a book on this, but a collection of other tutorials or articles would be great if such a book doesn't exist. Things I'd like to learn: Primary goal: Best Practices Unit testing How to utilize Fixtures Possibly using existing development data in place of fixtures What's the community standard here? • Should we develop code on a local machine in a VLAN?

  Because of security reasons, we will not be able to use IIS on our local machines. I'm sure that many of you have faced the same problem, so how did you solve it? Here are the options that we're looking at: Create a VLAN that is isolated from the network for development. This will allow us to use any software, including IIS, that we want. A disadvantage is testing Web services with external organizations, which can be overcome by using stubs. Not use a VLAN and use only the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio, and then deploying that code to the development server. This has the disadvantage of not being able to replicate the production environment during local development. In addition, at least one developer needs IIS for GIS development, so he couldn't develop locally. Thank you for comments or suggestions that you may have!

• openVPN GUI does not run error about error opening registry for reading HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN

  I'm trying to run OpenVPN as a portable application and to that effect i have installed it on a Windows 7 machine, copied the files to another windows 7 machine and manually restored the registry settings using a .reg file. Whenever i try to run open vpn GUI i get the following error error opening registry for reading HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN I have verified that the key mentioned is indeed in the registry at the correct location with the correct values yet the GUI still complains. I have tried running the gui as an administrator (i'm logged in as an administrator) and also the compatibility modes but none helped. I have also tried openVPN portable "OpenVPNPortable_1.6.6.paf.exe" and it has the same problem. Can anybody help me with this issue?

  6.4.2 Is there separation of duties between personnel assigned to the development/test environments and those assigned to the production environment? What does the separation of duties here mean? Is it in the sense of http://www.sans.edu/research/security-laboratory/article/it-separation-duties or something else? The formulation "between test and production environment" is really confusing me, it looks like they mean that one should have different sysadmins for test and production? Or do they just mean that developers shouldn't have access to production? thanks.

  Hello sysadmins, We use Siemens Step7 and SCL for PLC programming in our company. I recently got to install Windows 7 and had yet to find out that the Siemens software suite doesn't install anymore. - Which is a pain... Checking through the setup files, I found following entries in the Setups.ini file: [OS] PlattformIDAllowed=1;2 WinXP=True WinXPExclude=0,Home,1 WinXPWarning=1 WinNETServer=True WinNETServerExclude=Home,0,1 WinNETServerWarning=Home,0,1 Win2003=1 Win2003Exclude=Home,0,1 Win2003Warning=Home,0,1 Win2003R2=1 Win2003R2Exclude=0,1 Win2003R2Warning=0,1 WinVista=1 Win2008=1 Win7=1 I added the last line to try things out and it still provides me the same error..   I have been trying a lot (but not smartly) to figure out setting up VIM, ctags, omnicomple for PHP development. On Googling I found this file. But have no clue how to use it. What have I done until now? Here it is: I am on Fedora 17 64-bit OS Logged in as root Found my VIM version to be VIM - Vi IMproved 7.3 (2010 Aug 15, compiled May 8 2012 15:05:51) Followed the install details as here http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3171 install details Place in $HOME/.vim/autoload/phpcomplete.vim and enable the php ftplugin What else I am missing? How do I start using omnicomplete. (this is the first time I am using omnicomplete) Why didn't I try IDE's? I have a single core machine running LAMP stack. Didn't wanted to slow down everything and hence sticking to command line environment.

• Software for failover across multiple external hosts

  I have multiple webservers with the same content, hosted across different providers. However, I can't seem to find a nice, simple failover solution. Load-balancing software (Pound, HAProxy, etc.) are unnecessary, and I need the flexibility to manage over 100+ domains, so the paid DNS failover solutions I've found are too expensive. So far the simplest solution I've thought of is just to set a very low TTL (30min - 1hr) in each zone entry on my nameservers (running BIND). Then, continuously monitor each server, and temporarily remove failed servers from zone entries. But this seems like something that should be currently available. I only have root access to different VPSes running CentOS. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• front end to linux std mailbox for development purposes

  I am actually a software developer, do have a fair amount of linux experience as a user though since 1997. I am normally on stackoverflow.com, please excuse me if this question isn't appropriate here. I am working on a web project. We send out emails. I work locally on a linux box. When coding I use my local mailboxes to check what's been sent. Emails sent out to valid email addresses are not arriving at my official mailbox; they might be stopped by the provider's mail servers (gmail, yahoo). Now, we are sending out HTML mails too. I need to check how they look like. Is there a GUI frontend to the standard linux BSD mailbox? Or should I install some IMAP/POP server for this? Will such server get the emails sent to username@localhost ? Thanks for any suggestion

• Postfix/Procmail mailing list software

  I'm looking for suggestions on mailing list software to use on an existing server running Postfix/Procmail. Something relatively simple. requirements: 1 list, < 50 subscribers list members dumped in a certain file by a script (being pulled from LDAP or MySQL on another box) Handles MIME, images, etc. Moderation features No subscription/unsubscription - just goes by the file or database. Mailman is far too heavy-weight, and doesn't seem to play (easily) with Postfix/Procmail. I'm currently using a PHP script that just receives mail as a user, reads a list of members from a serialized array (file dumped on box via cron on the machine with the MySQL database containing members) and re-mails it to everyone. Unfortunately, we now need moderation capabilities, and I don't quite feel like adding that to the PHP script if there's already something out there that does it. Thanks for any tips. -Jason

  Greetings, I am currently plagued with BSODS on startup (both normal and safe mode) for my XP Pro. After much troubleshooting I have determined it is a driver problem. However, because I cannot even boot I do not know how to fix it. I am looking for some specific driver diagnostic and repair software that I can use from another computer to access and fix the driver problem on the problematic XP drive.   I am using Eclipse 3.5.2. I want to install the CDT plugin so that I can compile C/C++ programs. I attempted to install the CDT plugin and it failed, given the following error message: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. • software RAID array not starting in initramfs on Debian

  One of my Debian servers (kernel 2.6.30-AMD64) refuses to start the software RAID array that houses the root partition in initramfs. It dumps me with a busybox console. When I follow the necessary steps to continue booting it works fine (start the array with mdadm -A and then have LVM scan the volumes with pvscan and then vgchange -ay). I've tried starting with boot options rootdelay=10 to no avail. Also I've updated the initramfs and unpacked it to inspect whether it really tries to assemble the raid array (it does). Output before dumping to console : mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device W: devtmpfs not available, falling back to tpmfs for /dev and then some lvm messages saying it can't find the volumes holding the root partitions. Does anybody have a clue how I could fix this?

  Does anyone know of any Windows software that will do forward-proxying load-balancing, like HAProxy does? There are tons of reverse-proxy solutions, but I can't find any that do what HAProxy does, that is, allows you to load-balance a group of forwarding-proxies. I have a proxy farm (don't ask) that I need to round-robin balance. HAProxy will do it, but is very unstable on Windows. Thoughts? I'd really appreciate it. And yes, this is an actual, production environment question.

  Hello I am trying to Burn a disk let me catch you up where I am at as I have a very SPECIFIC question and it may be difficult to explain but I will try to keep it simple: I have software already in an ISO file; I am using Daemon tools on a Windows based PC What I am wanting to do is create the actual Picture (not disk image file) that will show up on the Disk drive when I insert the disk Eg: if you put microsoft Office 11 in your comp. you open up My Computer to view all your HD and Disk drives you will see the image that microsoft put on the disk which is a silver CD and the Microsoft Office logo on the top corner. I would like to know how to edit my current ISO file or what I need to do in order to put "A PICTURE" or "AN ICON FILE" on the CD/DVD so that when I insert the disk into any PC it will show up with the PICTURE OR ICON file I chose and look proffessional. • Internet cafe software for linux

  I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

• Which software could I use to setup a 4in6 IP tunnel (RFC 2473) on GNU/Linux

  Here is my problem. I have a server A that has two IP addresses. One public IPv4 and one IPv6. Server B has only one IPv6 address. I want to host most of my services on server B (because I have more disk space on it, I can control it better) but I need the IPv4 of the server A. I would like to set up a 4in6 tunnel (RFC 2473) between A and B so that I can transfer the traffic from the IPv4 address in A to B. If needed, I can request another IPv4 address on the server A, but I'd prefer not to. My question is: which software use to do the 4in6 tunnelling? I suppose OpenVPN can do the thing, but is there any implementation of the 4in6 protocol on Linux? A little more challenging: the IPv4 address comes from a venet interface, which cannot be bridged. How could I transfer ownership of this address I don't use on server A to the server B? Thank you

  Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

• Creating cookieless application on development machine with asp.net

  I am thinking about setting up a new domain to host static content on my website and have it cookieless just like Stackoverflow with their static domain. So before going ahead and buying the domain and setting it up I wanted to test it on my developement machine first under localhost (I have to mention that i am planning on having IIS running on my new domain for the static files). I therefore created a new application under IIS and disabled session state and forms authentication. When my main application needs resources like css, images and js , I use the path to the "static" application where they are hosted. The problem is that when I look at the request and the response for the requested files, they still have the session_id cookie defined as well as the asp.net authentication cookie. Is it at all possible to accomplish what i am trying to do on a development machine or do i have to just go ahead and purchase the new domain which hopefully with make things right? I tried to read about cookieless domain but can't figure out what i might be missing.

• Can't assign software to non-admin account

  I'm trying to deploy software on our domain using group policy, but I am only able to do so if the user is a member of a group with administrative privileges. We do not want to allow users to install programs generally, but do want to be able to assign/publish. The test program I'm using is originally a .msi file, and it installs fine for users in the administrators group. How can we assign/publish to normal users without opening up the ability to install whatever? Also, from what I've read, I believe I have correct permissions on the folder/share where the .msi files are stored. This is on Win2008R2 with Win7Pro clients.

• Revision / backup software for folder?

  I'm looking for a simple backup/revision software that will monitor a folder for new changes and make a backup of newly modified files? I have a folder with some text files, a few Word/Excel files and I'd like to keep backup files of them when they're modified. (It's no more than 50 mb). I'd like what Dropbox does but just locally (not to be stored on the cloud). Thank you. Edit: I'm on Windows XP. And I'm looking for a freeware app, if possible.
