• no sound in flash 11.10

  I am on 11.10 64bit. I have installed flash from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/. I had downloaded install_flash_player_11_linux.x86_64.tar.gz and move libflashplayer.so to ~/.mozilla and ~/.mozilla/plugins I also have OSS installed because alsa does not work for me. I generally follow steps mentioned at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound and everything works fine. But for 11.10, flash has got no sound. I am not sure if that is OSS problem. Could you please help me.

• How to create contracts in python

  I am just moving to python from Java and have a question about the way the two do things. My question relates to contracts. An example: an application defines an interface that all plugins must implement and then the main application can call it. In Java: public interface IPlugin { public Image modify(Image img); } public class MainApp { public main_app_logic() { String pluginName = "com.example.myplugin"; IPlugin x = (IPlugin) Class.forName(pluginName); x.modify(someimg); } } The plugin implements the interface and we use reflection in main app to call it. That way, there's a contract between the main app and the plugin that both can refer to. How does one go about doing something similar in Python? And also, which approach is better? p.s. I'm not posting this on SO because I'm much more concerned with the philosophy behind the two approaches.

• Multi database link and mix and match email alert

  I have a site which is a large database of people that have different knowledge in different domains, such as teaching (maths, french, science etc...) On the site there is a page where you can search people base on different request, such as distance from home, grade, sex. Now, I would like to add a page where people that are looking for mentor will fill a request, and when a tutor in his area of search will match request, a email will be send to this researcher. Because I know for sure, that when in January you look for a math teacher for your 10 year old son, and you find none, you won't go again in February, March... and on and on just to see. Maybe there is one now, you want to be informed when the tutor will get into database automatically (more or less like www.jobboom.com) So the question is, what CMS do I need to be able to do that ? Wordpress, drupal or something custom made?

• How to setup NX server and client?

  I installed NX server on my desktop and able to run it successfully following this tutorial: http://michigantelephone.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/how-to-install-nx-server-and-client-under-ubuntukubuntu-linux/ When i run the command sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver –status I am seeing the following output : NX 900 Connecting to server .. NX 110 NX Server is running. NX 999 Bye. It means i have setup NX server correctly.. But on other machine when i open NX client it is asking for hostname..what name should i give there? Every tutorial is explaining about how to install and start NX server but not about how to connect to the server from client.. Could you guys please help me? Thanks in Advance Deter

• Design for a plugin based application

  I am working on application, details of which I cannot discuss here. We have core framework and the rest is designed as plug in. In the core framework we have a domain object. This domain object is updated by the plugins. I have defined an interface in which I have function as DomainObject doProcessing(DomainObject object) My intention here is I pass the domain object, the plug in will update it and return it. This updated object is then passed again to different plugin to be updated. I am not sure if this is a good approach. I don't like passing the DomainObject to plugin. Is there a better way I can achieve this? Should I just request data from plugin and update the domain object myself?

• Permissions & File Structure w/ nginx & multiple sites

  I am using nginx for the first time as a long time Apache user. I setup a Linode to test everything and to eventually port over my websites. Previously I had /home/user/www (wwwroot) I am looking at doing something similar with /srv/www/domain/www (wwwroot) Rather than using /srv/domain (wwwroot), the reason is many of the sites are WordPress and one of the things I do for security is to move the config file one level above wwwroot and can't have multiple configuration files from multiple domains in the same top level folder. Since I own all the sites, I wasn't going to create a user for each domain. My user is a member of www-data and was going to use 2770 for www and have domain/www for each new domain. www would be owned by group www-data. Is this the best way to handle this?

• Unable to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit). The upgrade went smoothly (far more than I expected). Unfortunately, I cannot seem to install the flash plugin in either Firefox or Chrome. chrome://plugins does not show flash. I tried 19:17farhat ~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done flashplugin-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Yet, I cannot seem to find anything related to flash on the system. 19:17farhat ~$ sudo updatedb [sudo] password for farhat: 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer.so 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflash /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libflashlo.so 19:17farhat ~$ I am at the end of everything I know. • Easy user management on html site?

  I hope I'm not asking a question for which the answer is obvious...If I am, apologies. Within my html site (i.e. not Wordpress, Joomla, etc.) I want to be able to have a level of user management. That means that some pages I want to be only accessible to certain people with the correct username and password. What's the best way to do this? Are there any available scripts out there? • How do I enable Flash 11.2 in Chrome?

  I'm trying to force Chrome to use Flash 11.2 rather than the packaged Pepper version because it doesn't support DRM and I want to be able to use Amazon Instant Video/HBO GO. I followed Adobe's instructions to a tee but when I restart Chrome and view the plugins, the Pepper flash version is still the only one available. I have expanded the details and am certain I have not just missed the other version. I checked the directories where the files were being copied to verify that it worked and it appears that they successfully copied without issue. Unfortunately, since I didn't run into any problems until finding that it just didn't work, I don't have many other details that might help shed some light on this. I'm crossing my fingers though and hoping that someone else might have had some experience with this. Thanks in advance.   I'm redesigning the website for my academic library and am examining other sites to determine to identify the technologies used. Things like: Web frameworks Javascript frameworks Server-side technology Content management system Now I've had some real success in Firefox using plugins like Wappalyzer, Firebug, and the DOM Inspector. But some sites just don't display any of the info. I'm looking for using these tools, especially it seems it an enterprise-level CMS is being used. Does anyone know of any other tools to detect this kind of data? Also with Firebug & the DOM Inspector, there is a lot of info. displayed and I wondered if there was a way to derive the presence of server-side technologies, CMS's, etc. within certain elements of a web page? Also, if this question is more relevant to another Stack Exchange site, please let me know and I'll post it there instead. Much thanks, Jason

  I have a wordpress site which is located at a .com address. The site is a simple 4 page personal site with my academic credentials, publications and a health blog that I started. I have done quite a bit of seo and I rank pretty high for the keywords i want on google.co.uk. However, I do not rank at all on google.com.mt which is the Malta specific search. I have therefore just bought the .com.mt domain and pointed the DNS nameservers to my current host provider and redirected it to the .com address. My goal is to make sure I don't screw up my google.co.uk search ranking, while starting to rank on google.com.mt I'm I doing the right thing or do you have any suggestions??

• tail-like view on HTML logfiles

  I'm working on an application that creates HTML log files. I'm tired of having to manually reload and scroll to the bottom in the browser to see the latest entries. A solution that does not really satisfy me is using the Firefox plugins ReloadEvery and ScrollyFox. In many situations reloading frequency and scrolling speed are just to slow. Of course I could actually use tail, but I would prefer a rendered HTML page. Do you have any suggestions? Firefox extensions are preferred, but any other tip is appreciated, too.

• How do freelancers know how much their work is worth?

  I want to start a bit of freelancing in web development using ASP.NET MVC3 and PHP and I already have some people who are interested in hiring me, but I still can't figure out how much to charge for projects since I have never done it. For example how much would this site cost? Would it cost more if the author built it from scratch instead of using WordPress as the CMS? Or what about a simpler site like this? How much time spent is considered good/normal for building sites like these? And maybe some freelancers with experience can tell me what the usual requests are that they get from clients. What sites are the most in demand? I'm asking because I'm a student and I really can't work every day in a full-time job but I need the money so I guess a little freelancing would help me out.

• Slow Wireless Reconnect After Suspend - Broadcom 4312 with STA drivers

  I am using 10.10 with STA drivers, I reinstalled ubuntu because the b43 drivers were giving me a huge hassle along with some weird kernel issues. My wireless speed is fine, everything works well, except upon restart of computer and after taking the computer out of suspend. It takes about 30-45 seconds for the wireless to reconnect, and I think it is a driver issue (I clicked on the network manager at the top and for about 30 seconds there are no wireless networks listed.) I tried this advice already: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/fix-ubuntu-dropping-wireless-on-suspendhibernate-resume/ which basically says to change this: STOP_SERVICES="" to STOP_SERVICES="networking" in the file /etc/default/acpi-support This did not help anything. Something to note is that the issue does not occur when I am logging back in after already logging in once and logging out.

• How do you promote your blog or website?

  I tend to get (what I think are good ideas) and I go out and either build software/websites from scratch or use an existing software/tool such as wordpress. But when I'm done, and even though I get a few users that say they really like it, I can't seem to get my apps out there, or rather get a large set of eyes on it. So I'm interested in knowing how others do it. I read people's stories of how they did this amazing thing and within 2-3 months they're getting thousands or hundreds of thousands of users per month. It just seems to be all smoke and mirrors. So how have you done it? Or anyone you know who has... Does everyone throw lots of money into their promotion, something else?

• Grant a user permissions on www-data owned /var/www

  I have a simple web server setup for some websites, with a layout something like: site1: /var/www/site1/public_html/ site2: /var/www/site2/public_html/ I have previously used the root user to manage files, and then given them back to www-data when I was done (WordPress sites, needed for WP Uploads to work). This probably isn't the best way. I'm trying to find a way to create another user (lets call it user1) that has permission to edit files in site1, but not site2, and doesn't stop the files being 'owned' by www-data. Is there any way for me to do this?

• MP4 files show up but won't stream to xbox 360

  I set up a basic media server to stream to my 360 using uShare. Here are the instructions I used: http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/howto-ubuntu-upnp-server-to-xbox-360/. I can stream avi files fine but I cannot stream mp4s. When I go to videos on the xbox, I can see all of the videos and folders but when I click play for an mp4 nothing happens. On my ubuntu desktop I can click on the mp4 file and it plays fine. And if I take that file, stick it on a thumb drive and plug it directly into the xbox the mp4 will play off the thumb drive. I'm lost for why it won't work through ushare. Any ideas?

• Why doesn't compiz show the outline when I use the grid?

  When I drag windows, instead of getting an outline like I would on a clean install, I get nothing, so I don't know what function the plugin will use before releasing the mouse, other than what I guess it will do. Is there something known to cause this to happen, and what can I do to get back the outline? (NB: I have the outline enabled in the plugin settings, so please do not ask me to enable it :D (lol)!) EDIT: Now I have reinstalled the compiz plugins cleanly and still noting :(. What can I do?

• SEO for site with 301 redirect on root domain to subfolder

  I've been asked to do SEO for a site. The site is made using Wordpress and prestashop. Because of this the root domain has a 301 redirect to a subfolder - domain/shop/ For my SEO submission work, I know it's not good practice to submit urls that have redirects on them and a lot of the time it's not allowed. After searching the net I think my best bet is to do all my site submissions using the url - domain/shop/ even though it will take a lot more listings to get them up in ranking compared to using their root domain. I'm not sure how it will work. The root domain has the greatest rank then passes rank to the rest of the site. If I'm targeting the subfolder will it work?

• A good example project to 'prove' my skills [closed]

  I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!
