  • How much processor speed and cores do I need for these tasks?

    I am planning to buy a new laptop as I find my current one very slow. My question here is specifically related to RAM size and CPU power. I will mostly be doing development (not much games). I would be dabbling in distributed computing, multithreaded and data intensive parallelizable tasks on multi-cores. For e.g. I would want to be able to Concurrent programming in Scala/Java/Clojure etc. and be able to see parallelization. Furthermore, I would want the RAM to be enough. But from a developer machine standpoint, do you think 4GB RAM and 2.53GHz Dual Core processor would be enough.   • Unicenter Software Delivery 4 not able to connect to MS SQL 2000 Database after W2003 SP2 upgrade

    Hello Everyone Yesterday I installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 which has Unicenter Software Delivery 4 installed. Prior to the installation I disabled every CA service on the server (Brightstor, SDO , RCO, TNG) and the MS SQL 2000 service. After the installation of the SP2 I enabled the services again but the Unicenter Service is not able to connect to the MS SQL 2000 Database anymore. The database itself is up and running and I can connect to it with the Enterprise Manager. A dbcc checkdb doesnt return any errors on the Unicenter database.   • New hard drive for backup? [closed]

    I have come to realize that I need another external drive to use with my MacBook Pro. I currently have a 1TB WD MyBook Essential that I have been using for about a year and a half. I have it currently partitioned into two drives, one for backup (I named it Leonov) and one for movies, TV shows and other large files I don't need very often (I call that side Discovery One). I use Time Machine for backups since it is completely automated and I can restore from it without much trouble (I have had to at least three times now). As of now, Leonov is full enough that every backup deletes an old one and Discovery One is approaching it's limits. I would like to get a new drive and move one of the sides to it. What are some reliable, external (~1TB) drives for under or around $100? Would it be easier to move the movies (et al.) or the backups to the new drive? I also feel like I should say that all of my important documents (for school and the like, just not my music) are also synced to Dropbox as another form of backup and access.

  • How can I find the program making a harmonica sound?

    A friend has a Windows XP SP3 machine that plays a harmonica sound for about 5 seconds throughout the day at what seems to be random intervals (every couple hours). My question is how can I find the program making this sound? Is there a Windows API hook for monitoring audio access? I've gone through and checked all the standard Windows sounds in the Control Panel and right now the theme is set to no sounds and I personally checked to make sure none of the events have a sound specified. I also checked the Task Scheduler to make sure there wasn't something scheduled to go off every couple hours. Any ideas on how to go about finding the bugger?

  • usb wifi dongle on ubuntu server, cannot install realtek driver RTL 8188cus

    I got cheap Ebay wifi dongle from HongKong, Im trying to set it up on my ubuntu server. Occasionally need to move server, so it cannot always be connected to router via lan. Anyhow, usb wifi came with a driver cd.     I'm looking for a simple unmanaged switch with 4-8 GBit Ethernet ports and a fiber port (either as a GBIC slot or pre-installed with a 1000BASE-SX port). Does something like that exist? [EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot). All I found so far are very expensive managed switches with 12 or 24 ports for industry use.

    Is there any software 'easier to use' than Skype - ie to get a video conversation going you have to turn on the computer, make sure the speakers are turned on, make sure the web cam is connected, make sure you click answer with Video... I would like to buy a 'single red button' which does all of the above. - Any recommendations? So the answer is not necessarily a computer running a program, although it might be. I realise Skype makes a good attempt at helping to ensure speakers and web cam are working and helps you to sort them out if they are not, and for a person who isnt computer phobic this should be enough. However I am interested if there is anything available that is 'easier' than this - ie I'm looking for my 'single' red button. ie the mobile phone with video call maybe the closest answer so far, but I would prefer something as 'free' as Skype is.

The problem I'm having now is that I can't seem to find any actual high speed usb sticks. They all proclaim high speeds, but usually turn out to be ~30 mb/s - much lower than the 60 mb/s (480 mbit/s / 8 ) I understand USB 2.0 is at - no ? Can anyone enlighten me as to why no USB sticks seem to go past that low bar or alternatively point me in the direction of some actual high speed usb sticks ?
