  • How to best migrate one Windows 2008 R2 / SharePoint / Exchange / Terminal Services (All-in-one) int

    Hello, My client has one machine with Windows 2008 R2 and everything on it. By everything I mean AD, DNS, SharePoint 2010 Standard, Exchange 2010 Standard, Terminal Services, Office 2010 and a bunch of additional apps. Everything stands on I7 x 2 and 36gb ram for 7 people total. I've decided that we should virtualize it and split things into 4 VM's and keep host only with Hyper-V installed to host all the machines. What problems should I expect? What good advices can you give. My plan is that when i move everything to VM's i will move vm's to safe place and format the host as it has a lot of really bad things happening on it. But this also means that everything will be wiped from current solution so I have to be sure that Exchange etc will work when host gets wiped. MadBoy

    I have a number of small portable apps and utilities. Where does Microsoft recommend we keep these? Lots of installed apps install themselves into \users{username}\appdata\local but it doesn't make much sense for me to put stuff there myself. \program files\ doesn't seem right either because non admin users don't have write access there. Is it recommended to create a \users{username}\applications directory?

  • Blocking a country (mass iP Ranges), best practice for the actual block

    Hi all, This question has obviously been asked many times in many different forms, but I can't find an actual answer to the specific plan I've got. We run a popular European Commercial deals site, and are getting a large amount of incoming registrations/traffic from countries who cannot even take part in the deals we offer (and many of the retailers aren't even known outside Western Europe). I've identified the problem area to block a lot of this traffic, but (as expected) there are thousands of ip ranges required. My question now (finally!). On a test server, I created a script to block each range within iptables, but the amount of time it took to add the rules was large, and then iptables was unresponsive after this (especially when attempting a iptables -L). What is the most efficient way of blocking large numbers of ip ranges: iptables? Or a plugin where I can preload them efficiantly? hosts.deny? .htaccess (nasty as I'd be running it in apache on every load balanced web server)? Cheers

  • Best Performing Remote Desktop Software for WAN

    I've been tasked with connecting a computer in one of our branches in the midlands to one in south wales. We have been using windows remote desktop but find it too slow. The ADSL on the computer were connecting to is about 6Mb Download and 470Kb Upload so not majorly fast. That connection is also shared with about 10 other internet users. I'm trying to find out if the is any remote desktopn connecting software that performs better than the microsoft remote desktop software. Or, would i be better using a KVM over IP? I've looked into connecting the offices through BT's fiber optic but at £21k a year rental were trying to find a cheaper solution! Any help would be great. Thanks, Dave,

It needs to be secure, so that only authorized/registered members can view and upload pics.     So, what's your favourite TC shortcut or shortcut combination ? Which one do you use and for what purpose ? Among my most often used: Ctrl-Left ( or Ctrl-Right ) - open archive or folder under cursor in opposite tab. Ctrl-Shift-Enter, Alt-F8, Ctrl-X - copy full file path to clipboard. Shift-F6, Shift-End(if needed), Ctrl-C - copy only file name w/o path. Select files, Ctrl-M - multi-rename, for example remove "DVDrip" from file names. Ctrl-\ - go to root directory. Ctrl-D, - go to directory with highlighted letter specified. For example, name a downloads directory "&Downloads" in favourites, and the letter after ampersand will be highlighted. Alt-F7, feed to listbox, Ctrl-A, Mark(menu)-Save selection to file - creates a file with all files and directories inside current, with full path. Ctrl-[3-6] - sort files by name(3), extension(4), date(5), size(6). For example, Sort by name, when you need movies and soundracks with the same name and different extension to group them together. Sort by extension, when you need to find EXEs in Windows directory. Sort by Date, when you need to find the latest file downloaded in your dir. Sort by size, when you need to delete the largest files for free space.

    Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages. What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?     I'm looking at moving away from using my DIR-825 as a gateway and moving into a Linux box to do it all for me. I've found IPCop, but I'm looking for something with a little more power. My main goal is basically to be able to point different external domain names to different internal servers. backup.example.com - 192.168.0.5 home.example.com - 192.168.0.1 I host my DNS on my own dedicated server (windows), so I don't know much about doing the gateway thing in my home (my hosting provider does it all for me). Do any of you know of any free Linux Distros that can accomplish what I'm looking for?

    Recent owner of a Dell PowerVault MD3600i i'm experiencing some weird results. I have a dedicated 24x 10GbE Switch (PowerConnect 8024), setup to jumbo frames 9K. The MD3600 has 2 RAID controllers, each has 2x 10GbE ethernet nics. There's nothing else on the switch; one VLAN for SAN traffic.   • Best way to integrate applications to windows 7 install.wim image

    I have right now an unmodified .iso of a windows 7 32bit and 64bit installation disk. And I need to integrate to that some applications (office, adobe reader etc) and windows updates so that when windows are installed the above applications/updates are already installed and working. Requirements: My output has to be a install.wim image containing the new/improved windows installation files because the deployment is done via a pxe server and a custom windowsPE enviroment. The procedure to create the install.wim has to be as automatic as possible. I can't create it manually every time I want to incorporate a new windows or application update to the image. The image will be installed on 100+ computers so it needs to be 'generic'. I've never done something like this before but from what I searched a possible solution to this issue would be: To create a reference installation (preferably on a vm so I can take snapshots) complete with its applications/updates/settings. After the complete setup I take a snapshot of the installation Run C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize /shutdown to sysprep the machine. Boot to a WindowsPE enviroment and capture the .wim image using gimagex. Deploy the .wim and enjoy the rapid installation times. :D Does that sound ok? Would you recommend anything else? Right now the applications are installed after the installation of windows is complete. So the total installation time is quite long. That's why I need a different approach.

    We have 3x ESX hosts and 2x SANS that we wish to move to a redundant 10G networking infrastructure. We have 4x Dell PowerConnect 8024F's to provide our backbone and are configured as so (only core switches relevant to this question): So the questions are: 1) Do the interconnects between the 4x 8024F's need to be LAG'd or just STP'd 2) As the NICs on the servers are split across 2 switches, does any special configuration need to be done here or on the switches? 3) If a link or switch fails will the switches automatically find a new path to the Server/SAN?

  • Best way to script checking whether a machine is on the corporate network

    I am writing a Powershell script to determine if a machine is on the corporate network. The machine may or may not be on the domain, so I want to check at "IP" level. Have written something to check by pinging a couple of servers on a couple of different subnets (to get around the risk of someone being on another (external) subnet with a host on the same IP.) Works, but it's a bit slow, and not especially "future-proof" - e.g. in 2 years time when I decomission the server it'll break. Is there a way I can use the dns suffix being given by the local dhcp server? Just direct me what I need to check - I can figure out the script. Ta, Ben

  • Best video codec to store my own collection

    Hello! I think this question has already been asked but with different flavours. My problem resised in the fact that my camera (Canon G9) creates video with almost raw codec (I think it's plain old MPEG) so a 10 minutes video is almost 900mb. I would like to convert them in a format that has a good trade-off between space and quality, but I would prefer having the quality as good as the original (of course this is not possible because of lossy compression) just saving as much space is possible with a minimal lose of quality. Which codec should I look for? H264? It seems to be the champion of the moment.. otherwise which other ones could I try? XviD? Which parameters should I use? I mean how many kbits/s is a fair good bitrate to keep high quality? And what about audio codec? video specs are 640x480 at 30fps or 1024x768 at 15fps.. thanks in advance!

    A while back when I first started with my company, the domain had already been set up using a "xxx.net" DNS name for the internal AD namespace. The shortname is just fine and I feel no need to change it but I have always hated how we used an internet DNS name for our internal AD. We are planning an AD upgrade from 2003 to 2008R2 and I would like to work this DNS name change if possible. I know there are procedures for doing a full domain name change but my question is: Is a FULL domain name change neccessary if all I want to change is the internal DNS name of the domain? Would it be better to do this change after the 2008R2 domain upgrade?

I need to know what the best way to add and delete these lines would be. So when they click "Add Text Line" it finds out how many list elements are in the unordered list, adds a value of 1 to that and places a new list element with the id TextItem1 or TextItem2 or whatever number we're on. The problem i'm running into is that when you click delete item, it screws everything up because when you add an item again all the numbers aren't correct. I thought about writing some kind of logic that says all the numbers above the one you want deleted get 1 subtracted from their value and all the numbers below stay the same. But I think i'm just going about this the wrong way. Any suggestions on the easiest way to add and delete these text lines is appreciated.

  • Best way to handle Many-to-Many relationships in PHP MySQL

    I am looking for the best way to handle a database of many-to-many relationships in PHP and MySQL. Right now I have 2 tables: Users (id, user_name, first_name, last_name) Connections (id_1, id_2) In the User table id is auto incremented on add and user_name is unique, but can be changed. Unfortunately, I don't have control over the user_name and its ability to be changed, but I must account for it. The Connections table is obviously, user1 and user2's id. The connection table needs to account for these possible relations: user1 --> user2 (user 1 friends with user 2 but not user2 friends with user1) user2 --> user1 (user 2 friends with user 1 but not user1 friends with user2) user1 <--> user2 (user 1 and user 2 mutually friends) user1 <-!-> user2 (user 1 and user 2 not friends) That part is not the problem, The problem I am having with is keeping these relations unique when and if they change in batches. Possible solution 1: delete all of user 1's relations and readd them with the updated list. I think this might be too slow for my needs. Solution 2? Anyone else encounter this problem? How should I best handle this? update: distinguishing relationships: i handle relationships like this: user1, user2 user1, user3 user2, user1 in that example the following is true: user1 follows user2 and user3 user2 only follows user1 but doesn't follow user3 user3 doesn't follow either user1 or user2

    Possible Duplicate: What is the easiest video editing program to use on Windows hi, i want to edit videos, i'm looking for a good, premiere like software. but it seems premiere it self is too much for me... frankly i can see how those settings can be helpful for any one.. but it doesn't matter. i've just imported an HD video from my new camera (CS4), first, it cut most of the video, and second, it actually made the quality worse... i've tried a few free, programs, but as soon as i've seen the GUI of those, i closed them... i really like premier, but i honestly don't understand who needs all this PAL/DV stuff... is there any similar application that intend to more intermediate users? tahnks.
