  • Does NAT change the source MAC address?

    I'm trying to secure my home network but don't really need the complexity of a VPN so I'm trying to figure out other options. I'd like to allow my iPhone remote access to my home servers but I can't depend on the IP address because it changes quite often (due to the 3G network, etc). Can I filter incoming connections on my router (pfsense) by MAC address or does NAT change the source as it's passing through the different routers on the internet?

  • identify a router that cuts certain port

    Is there a way to identify which particular router between me and some server blocks connections on certain port? I am in a hotel in Thailand, where they have recently changed some settings in their equipment, and now I cannot reach any of my servers in Europe and USA by SSH / port 22. More traditional ports like 80 or 21 are open. traceroute command shows each particular router in the middle. But is there a way to identify one that filters out port 22?

  • Bridging and iptables SNAT conflict

    Hello I am working on a setup here and have it working with one minor exception. Devices on one side of my bridge aren't getting SNAT'd to the Internet. The Diagram / Overview: Primary_Network (Site_A) | | Internet ------- Linux_Bridge_GW (GW) | | Secondary/CoLo Site (Site_B) Here is the setup: 1.) Site_A has all the production servers and workstations. 2.) Site_B has a set of servers that we would like to fail-over to and also serve our internet facing services from. 3.) GW has two interfaces that are trunked and carrying the appropriate VLAN traffic (allow layer-2 propagation of traffic between sites) //this all works perfectly fine. 4.) The problem that is being encountered is, hosts from Site_B have their default GW at Site_A (same subnet) GW does not have IPs on the VLANs that are being passed. 5.) All hosts at Site_A can reach the Internet without problem. 6.) GW has an addresses on a subnet that is ONLY for Internet destined traffic. (This was done so that Websense would not have to parse unnecessary traffic. We use this VLAN as the monitor port's source on the switch where Websense is sitting). What I think is happening: 1.) Packet/Frame comes in on physdev at Site_B destined for Internet. 2.) Kernel sees packet, and forwards it out the other side of the bridge to that host's default GW. 3.) Site_A (containing core-network's Default-GW) sees that packet is destined for a host it doesn't know about, so it sends it to it's default GW (the linux bridge, since it's Internet bound). 4.) The kernel says "Hey, I've seen you before" and therefore doesn't do SNAT'ing on the packet and sends it out to the Internet where it's black-holed. Why I think it's happening: 1.) A tcpdump on the internet facing NIC shows the packet leaving the interface with the private address as it's source. What I would like: 1.) Have the packet SNAT'd. 2.) Something like the below would be awesome a.) packet comes in from Site_B b.) kernel sees that the packet is NOT destined for itself or any private address c.) kernel says "OK, well since you're destined for the Internet I'm going to send you out this interface rather than forward you to your normal default GW that's WAAAY over there." d.) packet comes in from internet and is sent out the appropriate bridge physdev depending on which site the host it's destined for is at.     For some bad reason Microsoft decided to remove all standard desktop icons besides the Recyle bin. It is easy to create shortcuts to each single disk using create shortcut method. But I would like to have the computer icon too. I guess there will be an increased demand to create useful shortcuts on Windows 8 Servers Desktop, because the metro surface 'on the backside of your screen' is just impractical.

  • What would be a quick fix in case of server downtime due to sudden high traffic?

    Let's consider a scenario like below: A small web blog build based on LAMP stack and deployed on a shared hosting. Suddenly it becomes popular in one day and it gets million hits per day. Since the developer have not consider high traffic, it caused server downtime and crashes. What would be a quick fix for such a scenario? BTW I know on cloud Servers I may be able to add more RAM or CPU to avoid that like in Amazon EC2.

  • scp stalls and ssh sessions freeze up (but eventually start again)

    I am running ubuntu on various computers on a home wireless network. Some are on 9.04x64, some 10.04x64 and one 9.04x32. Running scp with a large file starts out at 2.1 mbps and drops down to about 200k, stalling and dropping until the transfer is complete. I've noticed this when I have a secure shell open on any of these servers as well. I have tried this with 2 different routers, both brand new, different brands.

    I was just poking around in /usr/bin and I found an ELF binary file called [. /usr/bin/[. I have never heard of this file and my first thought was that it was a clever way of hiding a program, possibly a trojan. However it's present on all my CentOS servers and seems to have no manual entry. I can hazard a guess as to what it is but I was looking for a more authoritative answer...

    I am trying to determine the reason for some FTP servers requiring a blank line in the script as follows: open server.com username ftp_commands bye Refer to blank line required after username credentials. Admittedly FTP is outdated, but many clients still have legacy systems, which they cannot upgrade or replace. The reason thereof should not be discussed here. The intention of this question is to invite a positive response. Please do not respond if you disagree with the above. If you have never encountered this same issue, please do not respond. I suspect this may be limited to FTP scripts executed from Windows machines, but have been told that this happens often and with many different servers. My specific interest is to understand what may cause this as I have a real world example of a production system suddenly requiring this as a workaround fix, after running for many years without issue. The server belongs to a third party who claims no change on their end. Server details unknown and cannot be determined. Any help or encouragement from someone who has come across the same, would be appreciated. ps. Sorry for the many words and references to painful responses, but I have asked similar questions on serverfault and elsewhere and unfortunately got back kneejerk responses to FTP and respondents debating the validity of the question. I would truly not ask, or re-post this question online if I had a better understanding of the issue. I know of people who have seen this issue, but don't know what causes it. I am wary that this question would again turn into another irrelevant discussion. Please, I ask very nicely: Please do not respond if you have not encountered a similar issue. FURTHER EDIT: Please do not suggest changing the product. The problem is not the blank line requirement. We know this fixes the issue. The problem is not being able to explain the reason for the blank line in the first place. Slight difference, but a critical point to note wrt the answering of this question.

    My network engineer states I am part of a cluster where two apache application servers(512G RAM each) have 142 instances each of Tomcat (of which my company represents 6 each with 2G RAM). This seems like a lot and my latency issues move with the hour of the day - 7AM CST software functions fine, 10AM CST - system slows significantly this slowness continues until 6PM CST. My question is how many Tomcat instances can one application server handle?

I need to define nginx error page (for error codes like 500, 501 etc), but i want to keep the layout same as that in other site pages. For site pages, i use the include functionality of django but in this case, since django won't preprocess the page, i need to create a pure html page. Is there a way to reuse the master page that i created in django for creating this error page?

  • Apache with mod_php high memory utilization

I have observed that sometime apache server starts consuming high memory which causes memory swapping and results in high load on servers. whenever there is high load on apache server, the apache processes which are causing the high load were in sleep mode at mysql end and CLOSE_WAIT state at client side. Any help is appreciated to resolve this issue.

  • Git push from post-receive

What I would like to do is put "git push" in post-receive, but there is one problem. Post-receive is executed as the user doing git push to first server, so I can't chmod 600 ssh key with no pass.   • Other processes take over port 80 when restarting Apache - why, and how to solve?

    I have a CentOS 5.5 server running Apache on port 80 as well as some other applications. All works fine until I for some reason need to restart the httpd process. Doing so returns: sudo /etc/init.d/httpd restart Stopping httpd: [ OK ] Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs First I thought perhaps httpd had frozen and was still running, but that was not the case. So I ran netstat to find out what was using port 80: sudo netstat -tlp Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 *:7203 *:* LISTEN 24012/java tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:smux *:* LISTEN 3547/snmpd tcp 0 0 *:mysql *:* LISTEN 21966/mysqld tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN 3562/sshd tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN 3780/python26 Turns out that my python process had taken over listening to http in the instant that httpd was restarting. So, I killed python and tried starting httpd again - but ran into the same error. Netstat again: sudo netstat -tlp Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 *:7203 *:* LISTEN 24012/java tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:smux *:* LISTEN 3547/snmpd tcp 0 0 *:mysql *:* LISTEN 21966/mysqld tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN 3562/sshd tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN 24012/java Now my java process had taken over listening to http. I killed that too and could then successfully restart httpd. But this is a terrible workaround. Why will these python and java processes start listening to port 80 as soon as httpd is restarted? How to solve? Two other comments. 1) Both java and python processes are started by apache from a php script. But when apache is restarted, they should not be affected. And 2) I have the same setup on two other machines running Ubuntu and there's no problem there. Any ideas? Edit: The Java process listens to port 7203 and the python process supposedly doesn't listen to any port. For some reason, they start listening to port 80 when apache is restarted. This hasn't happened before. On Ubuntu it runs fine. For some reason, on my current CentOS 5.5 machine, this problem arises.

  • Where is the best place to label a server?

    There isn't much room on server chassis and I'm wondering where a label with the servers name should go? Is there any other information in addition to the name that should go on the label? Does it make sense to label each hard drive in a server or is that not necessary? There certainly is overkill, when I worked at Big Blue labeling was a huge source of bureaucracy, even a projector needed to be labelled and have it's whereabouts routinely reported.

  • Network share permission issues

    I have an IIS server running a site, appPool is running under local system, this is done because its easier to have full permissions to certificates and other file based resources on the local server. Problem is when I try write or copy a file to a network share, permissions are obviously not in place on the remote system for the IIS server local system. Is it possible to grant permissions on the remote system to include read/write or even full access to the IIS servers local system account?
