• Eculidean space and vector magnitude

  Below we have distances from the origin calculated in two different ways, giving the Euclidean distance, the Manhattan distance and the Chebyshev distance. Euclidean distance is what we use to calculate the magnitude of vectors in 2D/3D games, and that makes sense to me: Let's say we have a vector that gives us the range a spaceship with limited fuel can travel. If we calculated this with Manhattan metric, our ship could travel a distance of X if it were travelling horizontally or vertically, however the second it attempted to travel diagonally it could only tavel X/2! So like I say, Euclidean distance does make sense. However, I still don't quite get how we calculate 'real' distances from the vector's magnitude. Here are two points, purple at (2,2) and green at (3,3). We can take two points away from each other to derive a vector. Let's create a vector to describe the magnitude and direction of purple from green: |d| = purple - green |d| = (purple.x, purple.y) - (green.x, green.y) |d| = (2, 2) - (3, 3) |d| = <-1,-1> Let's derive the magnitude of the vector via Pythagoras to get a Euclidean measurement: euc_magnitude = sqrt((x*x)+(y*y)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((-1*-1)+(-1*-1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((1)+(1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt(2) euc_magnitude = 1.41 Now, if the answer had been 1, that would make sense to me, because 1 unit (in the direction described by the vector) from the green is bang on the purple. But it's not. It's 1.41. 1.41 units is the direction described, to me at least, makes us overshoot the purple by almost half a unit: So what do we do to the magnitude to allow us to calculate real distances on our point graph? Worth noting I'm a beginner just working my way through theory. Haven't programmed a game in my life!

• Changing frontend cache

  Our architecture consists of a front-end cache that most read only users obtain their data from directly. The front-end cache sits in front of a farm of webservers that serve pages written in PHP. We need to be able to detect certain conditions at the front-end cache level and pass those values through to the back-end via HTTP headers. For example we would like to manually tag the carrier network based on the IP address. So, for incoming traffic if the user is say coming from an IP address in the range of "41.202.192.0"/19 we would tag them as being a Orange Cameroon user by setting the appropriate HTTP request header, e.g., X-Carrier = "Orange Cameroon". Based on the setting of this header we would like to vary the cache and serve a different banner to the end user. How would you go about doing this? Keep in mind that we don't want to pollute the cache and we also don't want to create too many small cache segments. Assumptions: You can assume that the X-Carrier has already been detected in our cache. So, for the purposes of your test you can just set this value manually in your example script.

• Spotlight on an Office – Reading TVP offices

  This month we’re in the UK at the Reading offices, for ‘Spotlight on an office’. The Reading Office, which is Oracle’s UK Headquarters, is based in Thames Valley Park (TVP), which is a bustling hive of activity that houses many different companies, a gym, and even a nursery. Overlooking the Thames and some of England’s beautiful countryside, this office, just a short free bus ride from Reading Town Centre is in a fantastic location. The offices themselves are made up of 5 different buildings, each with their own car park, restaurant, and design. The main building or TVP 510 as it is referred to, sits resplendent next to an extremely blue (for the UK) pond, filled with large koi-carp that on a sunny day like to come to the surface of the lake and bask. As the main hub of activity, TVP 510 is where you will find our Dry Cleaning service, the Ozone Gym, the main restaurant (which never fails to have someone in it), and the Marquee which sits outside the back amongst the picnic benches, and is where we have Barbeques in the summer time. Another highlight of the Reading Offices is tucked away in TVP530; the home of H20, and our sports and social club. This is the building that can be best be described as having the ‘cool’ vibe, where you can relax and unwind, all whilst sipping a Starbucks (or Costa if you prefer, located in TVP550), and playing a game of Pool in the cafeteria, or alternatively you can sit back and enjoy a seat in one of the luxury massage chairs! If you feel so inclined, you can also hire out an OraBike from any of the TVP offices, and if you are anything like some of my team, cycle from Reading to Bath using the towpath starting in Thames Valley Park. Oracle’s Reading Offices are a great place to work, they are home to a diverse range of people and have great atmosphere which would suit a graduate, intern, or anyone who is looking to come and work for Oracle in the UK.

• What Poor Project Management Might Be Costing You

  For project-intensive organizations, capital investment decisions define both success and failure. Getting them wrong—the risk of delays and schedule and cost overruns are ever present—introduces the potential for huge financial losses. The resulting consequences can be significant, and directly impact both a company’s profit outlook and its share price performance—which in turn is the fundamental measure of executive performance. This intrinsic link between long-term investment planning and short-term market performance is investigated in the independent report Stock Shock, written by a consultant from Clarity Economics and commissioned by the EPPM Board. A new international steering group organized by Oracle, the EPPM Board brings together senior executives from leading public and private sector organizations to explore the critical role played by enterprise project and portfolio management (EPPM). Stock Shock reviews several high-profile recent project failures, and combined with other research reviews the lessons to be learned. It analyzes how portfolio management is an exercise in balancing risk and reward, a process that places the emphasis firmly on executives to correctly determine which potential investments will deliver the greatest value and contribute most to the bottom line. Conversely, it also details how poor evaluation decisions can quickly impact the overall value of an organization’s project portfolio and compromise long-range capital planning goals. Failure to Deliver—In Search of ROI The report also cites figures from the Economist Intelligence Unit survey that found that more organizations (12 percent) expected to deliver planned ROI less than half the time, than those (11 percent) who claim to deliver it 90 percent or more of the time. • Insurance Outlook: Just Right of Center

  On Tuesday June 21st, PwC lead a session at the International Insurance Society meeting in Toronto focused on the opportunity in insurance.  The scenarios focusing on globalization, regulation and new areas of insurance opportunity were well defined and thought provoking, but the most interesting part of the session was the audience participation. PwC used a favorite strategic planning tool of mine, scenario planning, to highlight the important financial, political, social and technological dimensions that impact the insurance industry. Using wireless polling keypads, the audience was able to participate in scoring a range of possibilities across each dimension using a 1 to 5 ranking; 1 being generally negative or highly pessimistic scenarios and 5 being very positive or more confident scenarios. The results were then displayed on a screen with a line or "center" in the middle. "Left of center" was defined as being highly cautious and conservative, while "right of center" was defined as a more optimistic outlook for the industry's future. This session was attended by insurance carriers' senior leadership, leading insurance academics, senior regulators, and the occasional insurance technology executive. In general, the average answer fell just right of center, i.e. a little more positive or optimistic than center. Three years ago, after the 2008 financial crisis, I suspect the answers would have skewed more sharply to the left of center. This sense that things are generally getting better for insurers and that there is the potential for positive change pervaded the conference. There is still caution and concern around economic factors, regulation (especially the potential pitfalls of regulatory convergence with banking) and talent management, but in general, the industry outlook is more positive than it's been in several years. • Hotspotting - tying Visualization into Other applications

  AutoVue 20 included our first step towards providing a rich hotspotting capability that will allow visualization capabilities to be very tightly integrated into a wide range of applications. The idea is to have a close link between the visual representation of an object or place, and the business objects associated with that object or place. We've been working with our partner Enigma to enable this capability in their parts catalogue - the screenshot above shows what it looks like - the image on the right is a trimmed down version of AutoVue displaying a drawing of the various parts in an interactive way - when you click on item '6' in the AutoVue drawing, the appropriate item is highlighted in the parts catalogue - making it easy to select the parts you need, and to ensure that the correct parts are selected. The integration works in both directions - when you select a part in the part catalogue, the appropriate part is highlighted in the drawing as well. To get slightly technical for a moment, this is a simple javascript integration - the external application provides a javascript callback that AutoVue calls whenever an item is clicked on, and AutoVue provides a javascript function to call when an item is selected in the external application. There are also direct java APIs available. This makes it easy to tie AutoVue into many types of applications - you can imagine in an asset lifecycle management application being able to click on the appropriate asset in a drawing to create a work-order, instead of finding the right asset ID to enter. Or being able to click on a part or sub-assembly to trigger a change order in a product lifecycle management application. We're pretty excited about the possibilities that this capability opens up, and plan on expanding on it a lot in the future. Would this be useful in your enterprise applications? • Examples of limitations in IT due to different bit length by design

  I am teaching the course "Introduction in Programming" for the first-year students and would like to find interesting examples where the datatype size in bits, chosen by design, led to certain known restrictions or important values. Here are some examples: Due to the fact that the Bell teleprinter used 7-bit-code (later accepted as ASCII) until now have we often to encode attachments in electronic messages to contain only 7 bit data. Classical limitation of 32-bit address space leads to the 4Gb maximal RAM size available for 32-bit systems and 4Gb maximal file size in FAT32. Do you know some other interesting examples how the choice of the data type (and especially its binary length) influenced the modern IT world. Added after some discussion in comments: I am not going to teach how to overcome limitations. I just want them to know that 1 byte can hold the values from -127..0..+127 o 0..255, 2 bytes cover the range 0..65535 etc by proving examples they know from other sources, like the above-mentioned base64 encoding etc. We are just learning the basic datatypes and I am trying to find a good reference for "how large" these types are.

Because the economy, demographics, technology, etc. are constantly changing, retailers must always be evolving their business to capture the next market.  But it takes guts to change something that appears to be working, and it takes a bit of luck to get the timing right.  To a large extent, innovation is about "guts and luck." To help retailers innovate, Oracle Retail provides all the necessary software to create Your Experience Platform.  There is no "Oracle Experience Platform" as each retailer needs something different to deliver on their brand promise.  We provide the actionable insight, optimized operations, and connected interactions, but its still up to the retailer to make it theirs. • How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

  I'm in charge of managing mobile application development at my company, and I am currently building a mobile device "library" for testing. Essentially, we want to have a representative device in-house for each of the OSes we are developing for, currently iOS (iPhone-only), Blackberry, and Android. Simulators only go so far, but I'm placing into the process a step to test software on the devices themselves. The problem we're finding is with Android. I don't think any of us here ever really understood just how fragmented the whole platform is until we started looking at devices to acquire. We are going to wait until v2.3 of Android is released, but which products to choose? Do we go by the most popular by market share? Do we get a small range of products by specs from least to most powerful overall? We're trying to avoid having to manage a dozen different devices to test each app, if not because of cost if only for the repeated time sink. How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

  What's a "Cloud Operating System"? Oracle's recently introduced Solaris 11 has been touted as "The First Cloud OS". Interesting claim, but what exactly does it mean? To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. This provides the elasticity needed for cloud systems by supporting on-demand creation and resizing of application environments; it supports the safe partitioning of cloud systems into multi-tenant infrastructures, adding resources as needed and deprovisioning computing resources when no longer needed, allowing for pay-only-for-usage chargeback models. For cloud computing developers, add to that the next generation of Java, and you've got the NIST requirements covered. The results, or one of them anyway, are services like the new Oracle Public Cloud. And Solaris is the ideal platform for running your Java applications.   I'm trying to set a DHCP server on 12.04. I installed: sudo apt-get install isc-dhcp-server My configuration files look like this: /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server INTERFACES="eth0" /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf ddns-update-style none; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; log-facility local7; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.1.235 192.168.1.240; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255; option routers 192.168.1.1; default-lease-time 100000; max-lease-time 100000; } When I run sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart I get: stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 15384 After this if I run sudo service isc-dhcp-server status it shows that its stopped: isc-dhcp-server stop/waiting What am I doing wrong here?

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools But the way I see it, at least when it comes to interaction with the customer, there is a fundamental problem: How the customer thinks is fundamentally different to how a software engineer thinks That may be a bit of a generalisation, yes. Arguably, there are business domains where this is not necessarily true---these are few and far between though. In many domains though, the typical customer is: Interested in daily operational concerns--short-range tactics ... not strategy; Only concerned with the immediate solution; Generally one-dimensional, non-abstract thinkers; Primarily interested in "getting the job done" as opposed to coming up with a lasting, quality solution. On the other hand, software engineers who practice agile are: Professionals who value quality; Individuals who understand the notion of "more haste less speed" i.e., spending a little more time to do things properly will save lots of time down the road; Generally, very experienced analytical thinkers. So very clearly, there is a natural culture discrepancy that tends to inhibit "customer collaboration". What's the best way to address this?

• Calculating the "power" of a player in a "Defend Your Castle" type game

  I'm a making a "Defend Your Castle" type game, where each player has a castle and must send units to destroy the opponent's castle. It looks like this (and yeah, this is the actual game, not a quick paint drawing..): Now, I'm trying to implement the AI of the opponent, and I'd like to create 4 different AI levels: Easy, Normal, Hard and Hardcore. I've never made any "serious" AI before and I'd like to create a quite complete one this time. My idea is to calculate a player's "power" score, based on the current health of its castle and the individual "power" score of its units. Then, the AI would just try to keep a score close to the player's one(Easy would stay below it, Normal would stay near it and Hard would try to get above it). But I just don't know how to calculate a player's power score. There are just too many variables to take into account and I don't know how to properly use them to create one significant number(the power level). Could anyone help me out on this one? Here are the variables that should influence a player's power score: Current castle health, the unit's total health, damage, speed and attack range. Also, the player can have increased Income(the money bag), damage(the + Damage) and speed(the + speed)... How could I include them in the score? I'm really stuck here... Or is there an other way that I could implement AI for this type of game? Thanks for your precious time.

  I have been working in my current job for less than a year and at the beginning didn't have the courage to say anything about the things that bothered me. Now I'm a bit fed up and need things to get better. The first problem is not random but I'll mention it anyway. We are running out of space so every new employee gets a smaller table. We are promised that the space problem will be fixed soon. Almost every employee has a different keyboard, mouse, headphones (if any). Mine are $10 keyboard, some random cheap mouse and some random crappy headphones with a mic. All these were used and dirty when I got them. The number of monitor is 1-3 and with different sizes. I have 2 nice monitors and can't complain but some are given 1 small monitor. When it's their first job they don't have the guts to ask for 2 even if most others have 2. Nobody seems to care too. Project manager asked if it's ok? He obviously said he can handle the 1 small one. Then the manager said you can go ask for 1 more. I'm watching this and think go and ask where? The company is trying to hire more people but is not doing much after the person has signed the contract. We are put in one room that is open to the hallway and it's super noisy. Almost like a zoo at times. Even if nobody is talking the crappy keyboards make too much noise. Is this normal? Am I too negative and should I just do my job with what I was given? Should I demand better things? Should the company have some system that everybody gets things in some price range?

• In a Tower defense game, how to do buffs/debuffs

  The question is at the very bottom. If you understand Buffs/Debuffs in tower defense games then you should skip the bulk of this question and go to the bottom (seperated with the long line) I plan on making an IPhone TD game. The fact that its an iPhone game isn't relevant but I am coding in Objective-c with Cocos2D. I am relatively inexperienced in the field of game design so I'm looking for some advice from someone experienced in this field. In tower defense, there are two things that are relevant to my question: towers/enemies (both have their own classes/children). They each have stats like hp, damage, speed, etc. I want to add buffs/defuffs, for instance: Towers A,B and C each have 15 base damage. Tower D would be a buff tower with no damage, a tower with an AOE(area of effect) aura that gives 10% damage to all towers in range. Tower E might slow enemies in its AOE, a debuff. Stuff like that. The same could go for enemies. Enemy A is a boss that has a slow aura that affects towers and slows their base attack speed or something along those lines. So the question is, what would be the most effective way to implement this? If it was just towers then I would just mess around with the tower classes, but since tower classes and enemy classes are both affected, should I make a buff class? TD games can consume quite a bit of memory with large amounts of creeps and towers, and buffs I feel like would also consume quit a bit... So I'm trying to be as effective as possible.
