  • backup without overwriting old backups

    I'm using Ubuntu server 14.04 to backup all data from '/mnt/test/ folder' to '/home/john/' with TAR and archive to stuff.tar.gz and to make it to backup automatical. I use cron to backup it every week so what if i want to use cron to create an additional backup file instead of overwriting the existing one? So, after month I'd have 4 backups, each with a unique name. Is there a way? Script ar other backup tool what would do that?

  • How to complete remove macbuntu (even by formatting)?

    I just format my root partition (and keep my Home partition), and reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10. But the theme of macbuntu is still there. If I try to run it's "uninstall.sh" even with "--force" I get "The script is not able to determine what version is currently installed" (the version is 10.10). By the way, I also deleted ".macbuntu" from my Home directory, but I'm still not able to uninstall it. Any hint?

    I am trying to install VMWare Workstation 6.5.5 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit), but at about 2/3 of the progress bar, it freezes where it says: Installing VMWare Player 2.5.5 Configuring... Interestingly, it is so frozen, that even after I hit cancel, it is still stuck. CPU consumption is at 0% and the command with which I launched the installer is: sudo sh VMware-Workstation-6.5.5-328052.x86_64.bundle Anyone has seen this before? Any idea why this is happening and how to solve this?

  • Setting up Tomcat6 properly in Ubuntu 10.04

    We have a Tomcat6 instance running on Ubuntu 10.04LTS. Our test box was just a Windows machine running Tomcat6. Both machines (Linux and Windows) have 1GB of ram. Via the Tomcat configuration tool in windows, I was able to set the min/max/permgen sizes of the JVM. Those were set to 256/512/128 respectively. Now on the Ubuntu box, I've tried setting the JVM options in several different places including: Adding JAVA_OPTS & CATALINA_OPTS in /etc/environment Adding JAVA_OPTS in $CATALINA_HOME/bin/catalina.sh Creating setenv.sh and adding JAVA_OPTS in $CATALINA_HOME/bin Adding JAVA_OPTS directly to /etc/init.d/tomcat6 Un-commenting the JAVA_OPTS and modifying it in /etc/default/tomcat6 Nearly all of those methods did not work, except for modifying /etc/init.d/tomcat6 directly (and possibly the /etc/default/tomcat6 change, but I just did that). However, my understanding is that when you change these settings, only one JVM should be used for the entire tomcat6 instance, and that memory is shared among the applications. On our windows box, tomcat6 is run as a service, and appears to behave this way. However, when I look at htop on the linux box, there are 20+ tomcat6 instances (I have an app that triggers internal jobs every X seconds using chron, so maybe these are threads? Or are they actual instances) all with those memory settings. The app runs fine for a bit, but eventually ends up locking up. I'm guessing each of these apps thinks it has 512m to work with and never GC's and then locks tomcat up completely. What is the proper way to set all of this up?

  • Bad disk performance on HP DL360 with Smarty Array P400i RAID controller

    I have a HP DL360 server with 4x 146GB SAS disks and a Smart Array P400i RAID controller with 256MB cache. The disks are in RAID 5 (3 disks + 1 hot spare). The server is running VMware ESX 3i. The disk write performance is really bad. Here are some numbers: ns1:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 3364 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1685.69 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 18 MB in 3.79 seconds = 4.75 MB/sec ns1:~# time sh -c "dd if=/dev/zero of=ddfile bs=8k count=125000 && sync" 125000+0 records in 125000+0 records out 1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 282.307 s, 3.6 MB/s real 4m52.003s user 0m2.160s sys 3m10.796s Compared to another server those number are terrible: Dell R200, 2x 500GB SATA disks, PERC raid controller (disks are mirrored). web4:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 6584 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3297.79 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 316 MB in 3.02 seconds = 104.79 MB/sec web4:~# time sh -c "dd if=/dev/zero of=ddfile bs=8k count=125000 && sync" 125000+0 records in 125000+0 records out 1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 35.2919 s, 29.0 MB/s real 0m36.570s user 0m0.476s sys 0m32.298s The server isn't very loaded and the VMware Infrastructure Client performance monitor is showing 550KBps average read and 1208KBps average write for the last 30 minutes (highest write rate: 6.6MBps). This has been a problem from the start. Any ideas?

    I have a server which has centos installed in it. Recently I have installed jdk 1.6 into it. When I try to run java command from shell it's working perfectly fine. Java is stored into /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_25 and path is set to /usr/bin/ when I type which java.     What is the best way of doing SCP from one box to the other as a sudo user. There are two servers Server A 10.152.2.10 /home/oracle/export/files.txt User : deploy Server B 10.152.2.11 /home/oracle/import/ User : deploy Sudo user : /usr/local/bin/tester all i want is to copy files from server A to Server B as a sudo user... In order to do this, first i normally login as deploy user on the target server and then switch as a sudo user without password. after that SCP to copy file, this is the normal way i perform this activity... In order to auotmate i have written script #!/bin/sh ssh deploy@lnx120 sudo /usr/local/bin/tester "./tester/deploy.sh" I have generated the private key for deploy user, so it allows me to login as deploy user without password. afterthar the sudo command is executed it will switch the user to tester... after that nothing happens.. i mean the script is not getting executed ... is there any way to accomplish this in a different way...

  • RTL8192SU Linux Issue Installing Driver

    OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2 [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# any help appreciated. and just encase I'm running currently Mandriva Spring 2010 Free

    Ah, confusion. I'm trying to install a python library called lxml as needed by a python script. I've been through numerous SU quesitons and answers. I haven't been able to make much progress.   • Bacula v5.0.2 Windows Installation Issues

    First off, I am very new to Bacula but I'm very intriqued from what I've read. I'm looking to set up Bacula 5.0.2 on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've run the installer and at the end it asks me to configure DIR name, DIR password, DIR Address. Windows documentation is somewhat hard to come by and I'm not certain what exactly I'm supposed to enter here. Do I need to create a local account that matches this info? Will the installation process create the account for me? Will this be the account that handles the FD daemon/service? I'm also not certain if Address means network location or local direcory. I apologize for my ignorance. Currently I'm trying to use the following information: Name: john pass: john address: thin1 (server name although I have also tried thin1.fqdm.local and 10.0.0.104) This info allows for the installer to complete successfully. However, when I run the BAT it hangs at, "Connecting to Director thin1:9101". The Bacula File Service is currently running under the local system account. What am I doing wrong? What do I have yet to do? Once I get this working properly I assume I will need to install clients on all my Windows boxes? Also, this is a 64-bit cpu but I am installing the 32-bit client. Are there any issues with this? Should I be using the 32-bit client? Thanks very much for the help.

  • Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

    Hi there. I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

First of all I want to say that I have 2 OS on my laptop, and when I load Windows XP I still may to access to the wireless network.   • Dell PE2950 - slow IO rates for writing and reading locally

    I'm having a serious issue with dell server PE2950. The server has really slow IO rates, so slow that I'm not able to use it anymore I tried few things to solve this: changing disks to new disks (configured them as raid1) changing perc card + perc cables reinstalling the OS of course, had to cause of changing of disks, centos 5.5 x64bit firmware update to everything virtual disks policy: No Read Ahead,Write Back, disk cache policy disabled. openmanage doesn't alert about anything, also i ran dell's diag tests, everything passed, also dell didn't see anything in deset log. dell offered to reseat everything, including the cpu, we did that as well, still io rates are slow I have several PE2950 servers, and I never had such a thing with any of those. All have similar or exact hardware as this one, all configured the same, with the same os centos 5.5 x64, same disks, same raid, same policy.     I just installed xampp on my mac os x. When I tried start mysql it display a message that mysql is already running on this computer. In order to start mysql stop first mysql.     I use a Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std (SVN revision 13064) which I am trying to make forward all HTTP and HTTPS traffic to an external app called Fiddler (used as proxy) on port 8888.
