• Conference networking for the socially awkward

  Do you approach a room full of strangers with excitement at all the new people you’re going to chat to over coffee and a muffin as you swap tales of how you convinced your manager to give you the day “off”? Or, do you find rooms full of strangers intimidating and begin by scouting out a place you can stand quietly and not be in someone’s way until the next session begins? If you’re on the train to extrovert city, that’s great, well done, move along. If, on the other hand, a room full of strangers who all seem to inexplicably know each other already is more challenge than opportunity, then making those connections with other professionals can be more difficult. So, here’s some advice, some gleaned from other things I’ve read online when trying to overcome my own discomfort in large groups (hopefully minus the infuriating condescension), others are just things I’ve found helpful over the years. Start small Smaller groups are less intimidating, and, now that you’ve taken the plunge to show up, it’s harder to remain inconspicuous. I find it’s easier to speak to new people once the option NOT to has been taken away. You’re there now, smile through the awkward and you’ll be forever grateful when the three people you’ve met and gotten to know here are also at that gigantic conference later on (ideally, introducing you to other people). Smile, or at the very least, stop scowling You probably don’t even know you’re doing it. If your resting face doesn’t come across as manically happy, tinge that with some social anxiety and you become one great ball of unapproachable. Normally, I wouldn’t suggest this as a problem that needs fixing, I have personally honed this face to use while travelling alone all the time. However, if you are indeed hoping to meet some useful people and get the most out of this conference, you may need to remind yourself to smile. Prepare some ice breakers This is going to sound stupid, like “no one does this right?” stupid, but, just, trust me a minute. It’s okay to prepare. You don’t need to write word-for-word questions to ask people and practice them in a mirror – that would be strange. I’m suggesting to just have an arsenal of questions to ask people if you get stuck, what session has been your favorite, which ones are you most looking forward to, have you heard X presenter speak before, what did you think of them? Even just thinking about these things in advance can help, and, as a bonus, while the other person is answering it gives you a moment to tamp down that panic, I mean breathe, I mean get to know them. You’re not alone (in the least creepy way possible) See that person in the corner clutching their phone with a mild deer in the headlights look?  That is potentially your new conference buddy. Starting with something along the lines of: I don’t know about you, the sessions here are great but I find the crowds a little tough to deal with. Mind if I park here for a second? is a decent opener. Just walking around and looking at exhibitors (if applicable) is fine, but it’s a little too easy to wander about and not actually speak to anyone if that’s all you’re doing. If joining a group of people talking is too much to start with, one-on-one can be easier. Have goals Are there people in particular you wanted to speak to? Did you have a personal goal of speaking to at least “x” new people? Are you trying to get a contact in a specific company because you want to work with them on something? Does the business have vague goals as well that you may or may not be judged on later? Making specific goals you can accomplish lets you know whether you’ve actually succeeded in your “networking pursuits” or what you need to work on more for next time. Everyone’s got their own coping technique. Some people are able to remind themselves that “humans are fundamentally social creatures” and somehow that helps them, others drink which is not really something I recommend for professional conferences but to each their own, and some focus on the fact that networking can play a big role in their career path. Just do what works for you, and if there’re any tricks you’ve found helpful over the years, please share em.

• Stir Trek 2: Iron Man Edition

  Next month (7 May 2010) Ill be presenting at the second annual Stir Trek event in Columbus, Ohio. Stir Trek (so named because last year its themes mixed MIX and the opening of the Star Trek movie) is a very cool local event.  Its a lot of fun to present at and to attend, because of its unique venue: a movie theater.  And whats more, the cost of admission includes a private showing of a new movie (this year: Iron Man 2).  The sessions cover a variety of topics (not just Microsoft), similar to CodeMash.  The event recently sold out, so Im not telling you all of this so that you can go and sign up (though I believe you can get on the waitlist still).  Rather, this is pretty much just an excuse for me to talk about my session as a way to organize my thoughts. Im actually speaking on the same topic as I did last year, but the key difference is that last year the subject of my session was nowhere close to being released, and this year, its RTM (as of last week).  Thats right, the topic is Whats New in ASP.NET 4 how did you guess? Whats New in ASP.NET 4 So, just what *is* new in ASP.NET 4?  Hasnt Microsoft been spending all of their time on Silverlight and MVC the last few years?  Well, actually, no.  There are some pretty cool things that are now available out of the box in ASP.NET 4.  Theres a nice summary of the new features on MSDN.  Here is my super-brief summary: Extensible Output Caching use providers like distributed cache or file system cache Preload Web Applications IIS 7.5 only; avoid the startup tax for your site by preloading it. Permanent (301) Redirects are finally supported by the framework in one line of code, not two. Session State Compression Can speed up session access in a web farm environment.  Test it to see. Web Forms Features several of which mirror ASP.NET MVC advantages (viewstate, control ids) Set Meta Keywords and Description easily Granular and inheritable control over ViewState Support for more recent browsers and devices Routing (introduced in 3.5 SP1) some new features and zero web.config changes required Client ID control makes client manipulation of DOM elements much simpler. Row Selection in Data Controls fixed (id based, not row index based) FormView and ListView enhancements (less markup, more CSS compliant) New QueryExtender control makes filtering data from other Data Source Controls easy More CSS and Accessibility support Reduction of Tables and more control over output for other template controls Dynamic Data enhancements More control templates Support for inheritance in the Data Model New Attributes ASP.NET Chart Control (learn more) Lots of IDE enhancements Web Deploy tool My session will cover many but not all of these features.  Theres only an hour (3pm-4pm), and its right before the prize giveaway and movie showing, so Ill be moving quickly and most likely answering questions off-line via email after the talk. • Remote Desktop (Vino-Server) connects but display doesn't work?

  Ubuntu comes default with vino-server, I can remote into my machine, and connect to it, however, the display inside my remote client, is a mirror of my own desktop. I tried using one monitor, thinking that's what is the issue but still won't work. • MacBook Pro Late 2009 SATA Resets, Slowness (Is my motherboard dying on both machines?)

  My MacBook Pro runs slower the longer it's on. I am getting kernel warnings. Some, but not all, resets correlate with AC power connects and disconnects. I don't think the warnings do. (How do I tell?) What are these errors? What causes them? Can this damage the drive or corrupt data? • Perfect End to a Bad Day

  Yesterday's post about A Bad Day at Work actually had an addendum to it. There were apparently a bunch of guys on ice skates last night competing in some sport way the hell and gone over on the other side of the valley, and enough people couldn't live without seeing them that they had all major arteries heading west honked. I mean honked... the traffic guy reported the 101 had 16 miles of backup... yikes. Since I worked downtown for a number of years, my fallback is to cut across the city on surface streets to get to one of my old 'haunts' and just drive it home from there. Of course with the 101 backed up, then I17 would logically be as well, so I kept the news on rather than my Zune and heard where the bad stuff was going North. I popped out on the freeway about 7 miles south of my exit. Got to the exit which is about a mile from the house without killing or maiming me or anyone else. Waited patiently at the light in the inside lane to make a left and go under the freeway proceeding West. The light changed, I had full green, I started through and whoa... I've got someone in a little rat car crossing my bow! A little explanation... I drive a 3/4 ton pickup with a V-10, extended cab and shell on the back. It's not jacked up, but it sits up pretty good and is longer than any parking place I've ever tried to put it into. I consider this truck to be the consolation prize for paying uninsured motorist coverage for 45 years and having Pilar Martinez totally destroy a 3/4 ton Silverado on March 1, 2007 by plowing into me at traffic speed while I was stopped at a light. If you pay for uninsured motorist coverage, ask your insurance agent *exactly* what that means... I bet it's different than what you think it means. But I digress, sorry... So here I am with a car that is shorter from top to road than the hood on my truck, and the driver thought it would be safe to run a red light and see if they could get past me before I got into the lane. The right side of my front bumper was almost into the driver's window when I hit the brakes and wheeled it left. Fortunately for all involved, I saw it soon enough, and pulled into the 2nd lane for making a left to go back South. I looked in my mirror, signalled a move, then moved over behind the yuck in the rat car. I then punched it, and the future hood ornament and I both made it through the next light. I pulled alongside to let her know that she was DEFINITELY Number 1 in my book, and it's a middle-age woman looking at me with a "sorry, it was an accident" show of pouty face and arms held up. Tough $hit lady... that may have worked when you were 18, but it's not working anymore, and it wasn't an accident... you ran a freakin' red light and almost got yourself killed. That just about put a bow on the day... I was home later than usual, pissed off about work stuff, pissed off at traffic, and now that. I ate dinner, watched a little TV, and was asleep about 9:30 exhausted. Hope today is better.

• ADO and Two Way Storage Tiering

Can you tier back to the original location if the data gets hot again? The answer is yes but not with standard Automatic Data Optimization policies, at least not reliably. That's not how ADO is meant to operate. ADO is meant to mirror a traditional view of Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) where data will be very volatile when first created, will become less active or cool, and then will eventually cease to be accessed at all (i.e. cold). I think the reason this question gets asked is because customers realize that many of their business processes are cyclical and the thinking goes that those segments that only get used during month end or year-end cycles could sit on lower cost storage when not being used. Unfortunately this doesn't fit very well with the ADO storage tiering model. ADO storage tiering is based on the amount of free and used space in the source tablespace. There are two parameters that control this behavior, TBS_PERCENT_USED and TBS_PERCENT_FREE. When the space in the tablespace exceeds the TBS_PERCENT_USED value then segments specified in storage tiering clause(s) can be moved until the percent of free space reaches the TBS_PERCENT_FREE value. It is worth mentioning that no checks are made for available space in the target tablespace. Now, it is certainly possible to create custom functions to control storage tiering, but this can get complicated. The biggest problem is insuring that there is enough space to move the segment back to tier 1 storage, assuming that that's the goal. This isn't as much of a problem when moving from tier 1 to tier 2 storage because there is typically more tier 2 storage available. At least that's the premise since it is supposed to be less costly, lower performing and higher capacity storage. In either case though, if there isn't enough space then the operation fails. In the case of a customized function, the question becomes do you attempt to free the space so the move can be made or do you just stop and return false so that the move cannot take place? This is really the crux of the issue. Once you cross into this territory you're really going to have to implement two-way hierarchical storage and the whole point of ADO was to provide automatic storage tiering. • Extending Programming Languages

  (Since I just posted this in another question, but my browser had to be annoying and submit it without content first, here it is again:) I'm a fan of clean code. I like my languages to be able to express what I'm trying to do, but I like the syntax to mirror that too. For example, I work on a lot of programs in Objective-C for jailbroken iPhones, which patch other code using the method_setImplementation() function of the runtime. Or, in pyobjc, I have to use the syntax UIView.initWithFrame_(), which is also pretty awful and unreadable with the way the method names are structured. In both cases, the language does not support this in syntax. I've found three basic ways that this is done: Insane macros. Take a look at this "CaptainHook", it does what I'm looking for in a usable way, but it isn't quite clean and is a major hack. There's also "Logos", which implements a very nice syntax, but is written in Perl parsing my code with a ton of regular expressions. This scares me. I like the idea of adding a %hook ClassName, but not by using regular expressions to parse C or Objective-C. Finally, there is Cycript. This is an extension to JavaScript which interfaces with the Objective-C runtime and allows you to use Objective-C style code in your JavaScript, and inject that into other processes. This is likely the cleanest as it actually uses a parser for the JavaScript, but I'm not a huge fan of that language in general. Basically, this is a two part question. Should, and how should, I create an extension to Python and Objective-C to allow me to do this? Is it worth writing a parser for my language to transform the syntax into something nicer, if it is only in a very specialized niche like this? Should I just live with the horrible syntax of the default Objective-C hooking or pyobjc?

• Adding array of images to Firebase using AngularFire

  I'm trying to allow users to upload images and then store the images, base64 encoded, in firebase. I'm trying to make my firebase structured as follows: |--Feed |----Feed Item |------username |------epic |---------name,etc. |------images |---------image1, image 2, etc. However, I can't get the remote data in firebase to mirror the local data in the client. When I print the array of images to the console in the client, it shows that the uploaded images have been added to the array of images...but these images never make it to firebase. I've tried doing this multiple ways to no avail. I tried using implicit syncing, explicit syncing, and a mixture of both. I can;t for the life of me figure out why this isn;t working and I'm getting pretty frustrated. • Sending formatted Lotus Notes rich text email from Excel VBA

  I have little Lotus Script or Notes/Domino knowledge but I have a procedure, copied from somewhere a long time ago, that allows me to email through Notes from VBA. I normally only use this for internal notifications where the formatting hasn't really mattered. I now want to use this to send external emails to a client, and corporate types would rather the email complied with our style guide (a sans-serif typeface basically). I was about to tell them that the code only works with plain text, but then I noticed that the routine does reference some sort of CREATERICHTEXTITEM object. Does this mean I could apply some sort of formatting to the body text string after it has been passed to the mail routine? As well as upholding our precious brand values, this would be quite handy to me for highlighting certain passages in the email. I've had a dig about the 'net to see if this code could be adapted, but being unfamiliar with Notes' object model, and the fact that online Notes resources seem to mirror the application's own obtuseness, meant I didn't get very far. Specifically, I need to work with an Access database that for various reasons can't be upsized to SQL. This MSDN page says: The .NET Framework includes ADO.NET providers for direct access to Microsoft SQL Server (including Entity Framework support), and for indirect access to other databases with ODBC and OLE DB drivers (see .NET Framework Data Providers). For direct access to other databases, many third-party providers are available as shown below. The reference to "indirect access to other databases" is tantalising but I confess that I am hopelessly confused by all the different names for data access technology.

• Vbscript - Checking each subfolder for files and copy files

  I'm trying to get this script to work. It's basically supposed to mirror two sets of folders and make sure they are exactly the same. If a folder is missing, the folder and it's content should be copied. Then the script should compare the DateModified attribute and only copy the files if the source file is newer than the destination file. I'm trying to get together a script that does exactly that. And so far I've been able to check all subfolder if they exist and then create them if they don't. Then I've been able to scan the top source folder for it's files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified attribute is newer on the source file. What remains is basically scanning each subfolder for its files and copy them if they don't exist or if the DateModified stamp is newer. • Brainstorming - MIDI over LAN

  I'm planning out a summer coding project for myself. I work with a lot of MIDI and have been researching it a lot. I know it's an old technology, but it works with a lot of music hardware/software so in my eyes, it's still viable. Anyway, I haven't ever worked with writing drivers or anything, so I don't know where I would start with this. So, provided I have MIDI data already being sent over LAN to a server (I know how to do that part), what steps would it take for the server to channel those received messages to an emulated MIDI device, that could then be accessed in music software and so on? Also, what would it take to also send MIDI data back through the LAN to be received by the device that originally received the message? I'm not really looking for too specific a solution. Really I am just trying to come up with a game plan right now and I need to figure out where/what to research.

• How to right-justify icon in a JLabel?

  For a JLabel with icon, if you setHorizontalTextPosition(SwingConstants.LEADING), the icon is painted right after text, no matter how wide the label is. This is particularly bad for a list, as the icons would be all over the place depending on how long the text is for each item. I traced the code and it seems to be that in SwingUtilities#layoutCompoundLabelImpl, text width is simply set to SwingUtilities2.stringWidth(c, fm, text), and icon x is set to follow text without considering label width. • Outlook Interop Send Message from Account

  Okay, the specs have changed on this one somewhat. Maybe someone can help me with this new problem. Manually, what the user is doing is opening an new message in Outlook (2007 now) which has the "From..." field exposed. They open this up, select a certain account from the Global Address List, and send the message on behalf of that account. Is this possible to do? I can get the AddressEntry from the Global address list like so: AddressList list = null; foreach (AddressList addressList in _outlookApp.Session.AddressLists) { if (addressList.Name.ToLower().Equals("global address list")) { list = addressList; break; } } if (list != null) { AddressEntry entry = null; foreach (AddressEntry addressEntry in list.AddressEntries) { if (addressEntry.Name.ToLower().Equals("outgoing mail account")) { entry = addressEntry; break; } } } But I'm not sure I can make an Account type from the Address Entry. It seems to happen manually, when they select the address to send from. How do I mirror this in the Interop? Thanks! (My Original Question): I developed a small C# program to send email using the Outlook 2007 interop. The client required that the mail not be send using the default account - they had a secondary account they needed used. No problem - I used the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Account class to access the availabled accounts, and choose the correct one. Now, it turns out they need this to work in Outlook 2003. Of course, the Account class doesn't exist in the Outlook interop 11.0. How can I achieve the same thing with Outlook 2003? Thanks in advance.

• git-p4 submit fails with "Not a valid object name HEAD~261"

  I've got a git repository that I'd like to mirror to a Perforce repository. I've downloaded the git-p4 script (the more recent version that doesn't give deprecation warnings), and have been working with that. I've figured out how to pull changes from Perforce, but I'm getting an error when I try to sync changes from the git repo back. Here's what I've done so far: git clone [email protected]:asdf/qwerty.git git-p4 sync //depot/path/to/querty git merge remotes/p4/master (there was a single README file...) So, I've copied the origin to a clean, new director, got a lovely looking merged tree of files, and git status shows I'm up-to-date. But: > git-p4 submit fatal: Not a valid object name HEAD~261 Command failed: git cat-file commit HEAD~261 This thread on the git mailing list seems to be relevant, but I can't figure out what they're doing with all the A, B, and Cs. Could someone please clarify what "Not a valid object name" means, and what I can do to fix the problem? All I want to do is to periodically snapshot the origin/master into Perforce; a full history is not required. Thanks.

• Why is Dispatcher.Invoke not triggering UI update?

  I am trying to reuse a UserControl and also borrow some logic that keeps track of progress. I'll try and simplify things. MyWindow.xaml includes a MyUserControl. MyUserControl has its own progress indicator (Formatting in progress..., Copying files..., etc.) and I'd like to mirror this progress somewhere in the MyWindow form. But, the user control has some logic I don't quite understand. I've read and read but I still don't understand the Dispatcher. Here's a summary of the logic in the user control that updates the progress. this.Dispatcher.Invoke(DispatcherPriority.Input, (Action)(() => { DAProgressIndicator = InfiniteProgress.AddNewInstanceToControl(StatusGrid, new SolidColorBrush(new Color() { A = 170, R = 128, G = 128, B = 128 }), string.Empty); DAProgressIndicator.Message = MediaCardAdminRes.ActivatingCard; ActivateInProgress = true; })); I thought I'd be smart and add an event to MyUserControl that would be called in the ActivateInProgress property set logic. public bool ActivateInProgress { get { return _activateInProgress; } set { _activateInProgress = value; if (ActivateInProgressHandler != null) { ActivateInProgressHandler(value); } } } I'm setting the ActivateInProgressHandler within the MyWindow constructor to the following method that sets the view model property that is used for the window's own progress indicator. private void SetActivation(bool activateInProgress) { viewModel.ActivationInProgress = activateInProgress; } However, the window's progress indicator never changes. So, I'm convinced that the Dispatcher.Invoke is doing something that I don't understand. If I put a message box inside the SetActivation method, the thread blocks and the window's progress indicator is updated. I understand basic threads but this whole Dispatcher thing is new to me. What am I missing?

• using wget against protected site with NTLM

  Trying to mirror a local intranet site and have found previous questions using 'wget'. It works great with sites that are anonymous, but I have not been able to use it against a site that is expecting username\password (IIS with Integrated Windows Authentication). • Android media thumbnails. Serious issues?

  I've been playing with android's thumbnails for a while now, and I've seen some inconsistencies that make me want to scream. My goal is to have a simple list of all Images (and a separate list for video) with the thumbnail and filename. Device: HTC Evo (fresh from Google I/o) First off: http://androidsamples.blogspot.com/2009/06/how-to-display-thumbnails-of-images.html That code doesn't seem to work at all, thumbnails are duplicated... some with the "mirror" effect and some without. Also some won't load and just display a black square. I've tried rebuilding the thumbnails by deleting the "alblum thumbs" directory from the SD card. HTC's gallery application seem to show everything fine. This approach seems to work: Bitmap thumb = MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.getThumbnail( getContentResolver(), id, MediaStore.Video.Thumbnails.MICRO_KIND, null); imageView.setImageBitmap(curThumb); where id is the original images id and imageView is some image view. This is great! But, strangely, way too slow to be used inside a SimpleViewBinder. Next approach: String [] proj = {MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails._ID}; Cursor c = managedQuery(MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, proj, MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.IMAGE_ID + "=" +id , null, null); if (c != null && c.moveToFirst()) { Uri thumb = Uri.withAppendedPath(mThumbUri,c.getLong(0)+""); imageView.setImageURI(thumb); } I should explain that I feel the needed WHERE condition is required because there doesn't seem to be any guarantee that your uri will have the same ID for both a thumbnail and its parent image. This works for all of the current images, but as soon as I start adding pictures with the camera they show up as blank! Debugging shows a dreaded: SkImageDecoder::Factory returned null error and the URI is returned as invalid. These are the same images that work with the previous call. Can anyone either catch my logical failure or point me to some working code?

• Update PEAR on MAMP MacOsX

• Extending Python and Objective-C

  I'm a fan of clean code. I like my languages to be able to express what I'm trying to do, but I like the syntax to mirror that too. For example, I work on a lot of programs in Objective-C for jailbroken iPhones, which patch other code using the method_setImplementation() function of the runtime. Or, in PyObjC, I have to use the syntax UIView.initWithFrame_(), which is also pretty awful and unreadable with the way the method names are structured. In both cases, the language does not support this in syntax. I've found three basic ways that this is done: Insane macros. Take a look at this "CaptainHook", it does what I'm looking for in a usable way, but it isn't quite clean and is a major hack. There's also "Logos", which implements a very nice syntax, but is written in Perl parsing my code with a ton of regular expressions. This scares me. I like the idea of adding a %hook ClassName, but not by using regular expressions to parse C or Objective-C. Finally, there is Cycript. This is an extension to JavaScript which interfaces with the Objective-C runtime and allows you to use Objective-C style code in your JavaScript, and inject that into other processes. This is likely the cleanest as it actually uses a parser for the JavaScript, but I'm not a huge fan of that language in general. Should, and how should, I create an extension to Python and Objective-C to allow me to do this? Is it worth writing a parser for my language to transform the syntax into something nicer, if it is only in a very specialized niche like this? Should I just live with the horrible syntax of the default Objective-C hooking or PyObjC?

• Are there any FreeRTOS interpreted language libraries available?

  I work for a company that created firmware for several device using FreeRTOS. Lately our request for new features has surpassed how much work our firmware engineers are capable of, but we can't afford to hire anyone new right now either. Making even tiny changes requires firmware people to go in and modify things at a very low level. I've been looking for some sort of interpreted language project for FreeRTOS that would let us implement new features at a higher level. Ideally I would like to get things eventually so the devices become closer to generic computers with us writing drivers, rather than us having to implement every feature ourselves. Are there any FreeRTOS projects that interpret java, python or similar bytecode? I've looked on google, but since I'm not a firmware engineer myself I'm not sure if I'm looking for the right keywords. Thanks everyone

• USB Serial cable with CDC support

  Hi All, I bought a USB to Serial cable which claims to be CDC compliant. But the bInterfaceClass value in interface descriptor is 0xFF(which is vendor specific). I was expecting it to be 0x02 (Communications and CDC control). In the device manager, i found that the drivers being loaded are ser2pl.sys and serenum.sys. I had learnt usbser.sys is the windows CDC driver, but it was not loaded for my cable. I am pretty much new to this CDC, so i have following questions 1.Does this indicate that the cable is not CDC compliant 2.Can i make this cable CDC compliant (since CDC is a driver functionality), by loading usbser.sys. If yes how?
