  • I Clean Solution'd my Winform App and now it's broken...

    I have a Winform App that uses a 3rd Party Library of Controls, DevExpress. I also created a bunch of Controls myself, extending those controls. Everything has been working fine when all of a sudden I opened VS today and on the Design Page all my extended controls were missing. I then tried rebuilding to no avail. Then I tried Cleaning and Rebuilding and made it even worse. Now I have tons(520) of erros stating things like -- Error 179 The name 'datBirthDate' does not exist in the current context D:\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\MatrixReloaded\MatrixReloaded\Controls\Member\ucGeneral.cs 339 17 MatrixReloaded also if I try to open a form or user control in Design Mode I first get this -- could not find type, "MyType" please make sure that the assembly that contains this type is referenced and then, if I click Ignore and Continue I get this for all Forms and Contros when I try and look at them in Design Mode -- Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown Help!?!? When I googled I came across mostly references to VS 2003...I am on 2008 sp1.

    Does anyone konw whether I can load .net 4.0 assemblies from SQL Server 2008? In particular, we are looking at SQL Reporting, with Custom Data Extensions. I have noticed that hte SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Studio does not seem to support VS2010 at the moment. If I release my CDE's as .net 4.0 assemblies, will I even be able to load them from within the SQL Server Reporting Server?

    Hi All, I have created a Custom C# Project Template for Visual Studio 2008. It works perfect. Only issue is that i have to place the zip file for the project template under the "C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Templates\ItemTemplates\Visual C#" Now as this folder is specific to each user on the machine, I will have to make sure that all the users on the machine has the project template installed seperately. Is there any way I can just install it once and all the users can get this project template. In short can I change the Custom Project template Install directory?

  • SQL Server indexed view matching of views with joins not working

    Does anyone have experience of when SQL Servr 2008 R2 is able to automatically match indexed view (also known as materialized views) that contain joins to a query? for example the view select dbo.Orders.Date, dbo.OrderDetails.ProductID from dbo.OrderDetails join dbo.Orders on dbo.OrderDetails.OrderID = dbo.Orders.ID cannot be automatically matched to the same exact query. When I select directly from this view ith (noexpand) I actually get a much faster query plan that does a scan on the clustered index of the indexed view. Can I get SQL Server to do this matching automatically? I have quite a few queries and views... I am on enterprise edition of SQL Server 2008 R2.

    I'm working on a project using Visual Studio 2008 and have moved from the the MVC 2 Preview to RTM version. We would like to use model validation such as: public class ViewModel { [Required(ErrorMessage="UserName is required.")] [StringLength(10, ErrorMessage="UserName cannot be greater than 10 chars.")] public string UserName { get; set; } } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Register(ViewModel model) { if (ModelState.IsValid){} // Always true } However the ModelState.IsValid always returns true. I have a suspicion that it might be something to do with the version of System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations.dll that we are referencing, currently version 99.0.0.0, which seems rather odd. Does anyone know what version of this dll is included with the MVC 2 RTM for Visual Studio 2008?

    I'm trying to write a SQLCLR function that takes a DateTime2 as input and returns another DateTime2. Based on this post I altered the parameter to be the C# type DateTime giving me the level of precision I require. However because the input can be null I would like it to be DateTime?; the return type as well. using System; using Microsoft.SqlServer.Server; namespace SqlServer.Functions { public class UserDefinedFunctions { [SqlFunction(DataAccess = DataAccessKind.None)] public static DateTime?   • Best way to auto-restore a database every hour

    I have a demo site where anyone can login and test a management interface. Every hour I would like to flush all the data in the SQL 2008 Database and restore it from the original. Red Gate Software has some awesome tools for this, however they are beyond my budget right now. Could I simply make a backup copy of the database's data file, then have a c# console app that deletes it and copies over the original. Then I can have a windows schedule task to run the .exe every hour. It's simple and free... would this work? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Web edition I understand that Red Gate Software is technically better because I can set it to analyze the db and only update the records that were altered, and the approach I have above is like a "sledge hammer".

  • $(MSBuildStartupDirectory) in Visual Studio points to different places on different machines

    In a large solution, I'm integrating Gendarme into Visual Studio 2008 compilation process. I am using GendarmeMsBuild task along with a .targets file to add a AfterBuild target to every project in the solution. I am looking for a way to import this file into .csproj files in a way that wouldn't require me to change the include path (the projects have different nesting levels). Apart from using NuGet SolutionDir variable, best way to solve this seemed to be to use $(MSBuildStartupDirectory). However, as it turns out, on some machines, using the same version of VS 2008 (as same updates installed, as far as I was able to check) this resolves to the solution directory, and on others to c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE. How can I either get this to always resolve to the solution folder or obtain the base folder in another consistent way?

  • Storing DateTime (UTC) vs. storing DateTimeOffset

    I usually have an "interceptor" that right before reading/writing from/to the database does datetime conversion (from UTC to localtime, and from localtime to utc), so I can use DateTime.Now (derivations and comparisions) throughout the system without worrying about timezones. Regarding serialization and moving data between computers, there is no need to bother, as the datetime is always UTC. Should I continue storing my dates (SQL 2008 - datetime) in UTC format or should I instead store it using DateTimeOffset (SQL 2008 - datetimeoffset)? UTC Dates in the database (datetime type) have been working and known for so long, why change it? What are the advantages? I have already looked into articles like this one, but I'm not 100% convinced though. Any thoughts?

    I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2008 ASP.NET Web Applications project. In one of my ASPX files I am trying to reference the Master file, which is actually located in the parent website. In other words, when I open the parent website, I see this project listed. But when I open this project separately, I do not see parent website and this project is the root. So now how do I use the Master file from the parent website? Currently, I have in my ASPX file: <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Site.Master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="EnhancedCreateUserWizard.aspx.cs" Inherits="Membership_EnhancedCreateUserWizard" Title="Untitled Page" %> But this won't work because it is a virtual path and since this project is the root, I can't access the Master file virtually. Instead I want to specify physical path. How accomplish I do this?

    Hi everyone, Does anyone out there use SQL Express 2008 R2 in a production environment? I am looking at hosting a Windows VPS as a server for a client software product I have developed. Clients connect to the server, send their data to a service running on the server, and the service updates the database. I'm trying to keep running costs down, and whilst I have a license for SQL Developer I obviously can't use this in a production environment. Would it be wise/possible to use SQL Express 2008, and if so why/why not? Thanks, JD

  • Getting Assert to work in Visual C++ Unit Tests?

    I'm using Visual Studio 2008's built in testing framework in my Visual C++ project. I'm adding a new Test Project, then a new Unit Test. However, I can't use any of the functions provided by Assert. Assert shows up in the Intellisense, but I can't do anything with it. I've done unit tests fine in Visual C#. Am I forgetting to do anything? EDIT: There isn't much code because everything I'm doing is auto-generated by Visual Studio 2008. Here are the steps I'm doing: File - New Project - Visual C++ - General - Empty Project Right click solution in Solution Explorer - Add - New Project... Visual C++ - Test - Test Project Open UnitTest1.cpp (auto-generated) Go to TestMethod1() From here, when I try to use the Assert class (like Assert.AreEqual), I can't do it. If I do the same in a Visual C# project, it works fine.

  • Can the Sequence of RecordSets in a Multiple RecordSet ADO.Net resultset be determined, controlled?

    I am using code similar to this Support / KB article to return multiple recordsets to my C# program. But I don't want C# code to be dependant on the physical sequence of the recordsets returned, in order to do it's job. So my question is, "Is there a way to determine which set of records from a multiplerecordset resultset am I currently processing?" I know I could probably decipher this indirectly by looking for a unique column name or something per resultset, but I think/hope there is a better way. P.S. I am using Visual Studio 2008 Pro & SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.

  • TFS: How do I view .cs files in the VS IDE when viewing details of a shelveset?

    For our code review process we open the details of a shelveset to see all files that have been worked on. Right clicking and choosing "Compare" works great for existing ( modified ) files. But, when a file has been added I just want to view the file. Double clicking ( or right click - view ) opens .cs ( and .sql )files in notepad. When I try to open a .PRC file ( extension for our stored procedures ) I get a prompt that allows me to choose what program to use for viewing. Does anyone know how to get this prompt to show up for .cs files ( and all other files, for that matter ) Thanks! Now, if we wish to join these two tables on the Broker column, and if a country exists in the CTMBroker table on the Country, we have the following two choices: SELECT T.TradeRef,T.TradeStatus FROM Trades AS T JOIN CTMBroker AS B ON B.Broker=T.Broker AND ISNULL(B.Country, T.Country) = T.Country or SELECT T.TradeRef,T.TradeStatus FROM Trades AS T JOIN CTMBroker AS B ON B.Broker=T.Broker AND (B.COUNTRY=T.Country OR B.Country IS NULL) These are both logically equivalent, however in this specific circumstance for our database (SQL Server 2008, SP1) two different execution plans are produced for these two queries with the second version significantly outperforming the first version in terms of both time and logical reads. My question really is as follows: as a general rule would (2) be preferred to (1), or does this just happen to be exploiting some particular idiosyncracy of the optimiser in 2008 SP1 (that could therefore change with future versions of SQL Server).

    My client has a XenServer 6.0.2 installation with 2 Window Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. Whenever the virtual machines are rebooted they lose their IP settings (IP address, subnet, gateway). Each time after a reboot I need to login to each VM via XenCenter and re-apply the required static IP settings.   • Difference between User Control and Custom Control Library

    I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?
