  • App.Config Ignored After Pre-Build Event

    I have a solution with several projects and several developers, each with their own environment (of course). To manage connection strings between each environment, I have created several app.config files for each environment: app.config.dev, app.config.qa, etc. The pre-build event simply copies the app.config.$(ConfigurationName) to app.config. This pre-build event is done for each project in the solution, and the config string is included in each (including the test project). When I use the pre-build events to manage the app.config files, the connection string cannot be found. I can get the tests to run fine by 2 methods: 1. Do not use the pre-build events to manage the app.config file selection, and do it myself or 2. If I check out app.config and make it writable, then the pre-build events work just fine. We are using Visual Studio 2008. I'm down to my last grey hair here, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • How to track deleted self-tracking entities in ObservableCollection without memory leaks

    In our multi-tier business application we have ObservableCollections of Self-Tracking Entities that are returned from service calls. The idea is we want to be able to get entities, add, update and remove them from the collection client side, and then send these changes to the server side, where they will be persisted to the database. Self-Tracking Entities, as their name might suggest, track their state themselves. When a new STE is created, it has the Added state, when you modify a property, it sets the Modified state, it can also have Deleted state but this state is not set when the entity is removed from an ObservableCollection (obviously). If you want this behavior you need to code it yourself. In my current implementation, when an entity is removed from the ObservableCollection, I keep it in a shadow collection, so that when the ObservableCollection is sent back to the server, I can send the deleted items along, so Entity Framework knows to delete them. Something along the lines of: protected IDictionary<int, IList> DeletedCollections = new Dictionary<int, IList>(); protected void SubscribeDeletionHandler<TEntity>(ObservableCollection<TEntity> collection) { var deletedEntities = new List<TEntity>(); DeletedCollections[collection.GetHashCode()] = deletedEntities; collection.CollectionChanged += (o, a) => { if (a.OldItems != null) { deletedEntities.AddRange(a.OldItems.Cast<TEntity>()); } }; } Now if the user decides to save his changes to the server, I can get the list of removed items, and send them along: ObservableCollection<Customer> customers = MyServiceProxy.GetCustomers(); customers.RemoveAt(0); MyServiceProxy.UpdateCustomers(customers); At this point the UpdateCustomers method will verify my shadow collection if any items were removed, and send them along to the server side. This approach works fine, until you start to think about the life-cycle these shadow collections. Basically, when the ObservableCollection is garbage collected there is no way of knowing that we need to remove the shadow collection from our dictionary. I came up with some complicated solution that basically does manual memory management in this case. I keep a WeakReference to the ObservableCollection and every few seconds I check to see if the reference is inactive, in which case I remove the shadow collection. But this seems like a terrible solution... I hope the collective genius of StackOverflow can shed light on a better solution. Thanks!

  • SSH new connection begins to hang (not reject or terminate) after a day or so on Ubuntu 13.04 server

    Recently we upgraded the server from 12.04 LTS server to 13.04. All was well, including after a reboot. With all packages updated we began to see a strange issue, ssh works for a day or so (unclear on timing) then a later request for SSH hangs (cannot ctrl+c, nothing). This now happens every single time. It is imperative that I get it sorted. The strange thing is that it behaves initially then starts to hang after several hours. I perused logs previously and nothing stood out.   • PostgreSQL to Data-Warehouse: Best approach for near-real-time ETL / extraction of data

    Background: I have a PostgreSQL (v8.3) database that is heavily optimized for OLTP. I need to extract data from it on a semi real-time basis (some-one is bound to ask what semi real-time means and the answer is as frequently as I reasonably can but I will be pragmatic, as a benchmark lets say we are hoping for every 15min) and feed it into a data-warehouse. How much data? At peak times we are talking approx 80-100k rows per min hitting the OLTP side, off-peak this will drop significantly to 15-20k. The most frequently updated rows are ~64 bytes each but there are various tables etc so the data is quite diverse and can range up to 4000 bytes per row. The OLTP is active 24x5.5. Best Solution? From what I can piece together the most practical solution is as follows: Create a TRIGGER to write all DML activity to a rotating CSV log file Perform whatever transformations are required Use the native DW data pump tool to efficiently pump the transformed CSV into the DW Why this approach? TRIGGERS allow selective tables to be targeted rather than being system wide + output is configurable (i.e. into a CSV) and are relatively easy to write and deploy. SLONY uses similar approach and overhead is acceptable CSV easy and fast to transform Easy to pump CSV into the DW Alternatives considered .... Using native logging (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/runtime-config-logging.html). Problem with this is it looked very verbose relative to what I needed and was a little trickier to parse and transform. However it could be faster as I presume there is less overhead compared to a TRIGGER. Certainly it would make the admin easier as it is system wide but again, I don't need some of the tables (some are used for persistent storage of JMS messages which I do not want to log) Querying the data directly via an ETL tool such as Talend and pumping it into the DW ... problem is the OLTP schema would need tweaked to support this and that has many negative side-effects Using a tweaked/hacked SLONY - SLONY does a good job of logging and migrating changes to a slave so the conceptual framework is there but the proposed solution just seems easier and cleaner Using the WAL Has anyone done this before? Want to share your thoughts?

    Hello, I'm trying to try the POCO library. I downloaded the zip file, and opened the vs solution file named "Net_vs90.sln" on VS 2008. When I try to build the solution, I get this ugly error: bla bla bla.... 1Linking... 1LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'PocoFoundationd.lib' bla bla bla.... Linking... 2LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'CppUnitd.lib' I'm surprised, because I haven't done any changes to the code or configurations. What could be the reason?

    This feels like a completely basic question, but, for the life of me, I can't seem to work out an elegant solution. Basically, I am doing a Linq Query creating a new object from the query. In the new object, I want to generate a auto-incremented number to allow me to keep a selection order for later use (named Iter in my example).   • How do I rotate only some views when working with a uinavigationcontroller as a tab of a uitabbarcon

    Here is a flow that I can not figure out how to work. ( when I state (working) it means that in that current state the rules for orientation for that view are working correctly) First View: TableView on the stack of a UINavigationController that is a tab of UITabBarController. TableView is only allowed to be portrait. (working) When you rotate the TableView to landscape a modal comes up with a custom UIView that is like a coverflow (which i'll explain the problem there in a moment). A Selection made on tableview pushes a UIScrollview on to the stack. UIScrollView is allowed all orientations. (working) When UIScrollView is in landscape mode and the user hits back they are taken to the custom UIView that is like the coverflow and only allows landscape. The problem is here. Because the UIScrollView allows full rotation it permitted the TableView to rotate as well to landscape. I have a method attached to a notification "UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification" that checks to see if the custom view is the current controller and if it is and if the user has rotated back to portrait I need to pop the custom view and show the table view. The table view has to rotate back to portrait, which really is okay as long as the user doesn't see it. When I create custom animations it works pretty good except for some odd invisible black box that seems to rotate with the device right before I fade out the customview to the tableview. Further inorder to ensure that my tableview will rotate to portrait I have to allow the customview to support all orientations because the system looks to the current view (in my code) as to whether or not that app is allowed to rotate to a certain orientation. Because of this I many proposed solutions will show the customview rotating to portrait as the table view comes back to focus. My other problem is very similar. If you are viewing the tableview and rotate the modalview of the customview is presented. When you make a selection on this view it pushes the UIScrollview onto the stack, but because the Tableview only supports portrait the UIScrollview comes in in portrait while the device is in landscape mode. How can I overcome these awful blocks? This is my current attempt: When it comes to working with UITabBarController the system really only cares what the tabbarcontroller has to say about rotation. Currently whenever a view loads it reports it supported orientations. It is responsible for poping the customview and showing the tableview. There are two different versions in place that originally were for two different versions of the SDK but both are pretty close to solutions. The reason the first is not supported on 3.0 is for some reason you can't have a view showing and then showen as a modal view. Not sure if that is a bug or a feature.     I have to mix some colors in a natural way. This means blue + yellow = green blue + red = purple and so on. I got the colors as RGB-Values. When I try to mix them I got the right "RGB"-results like green + red = yellow yellow + blue = white but not the right "natural-wet-paint"-results. Any good idea how to mix RGB in a natural way? It would be great if someone knew a solution within the Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics namespace but a generic solution would also help :)

  • Logging IP address for uniqueness without storing the IP address itself for privacy

    In a web application when logging some data I'd like to make sure I can identify data that came at differetn times but from the same IP address. On the other hand for privacy concerns as the data will be released publicly I'd like to make sure the actual IP cannot be retrieved. So I need some one way mapping of the IP addresses to some other strings that ensures 1-1 mapping. If I understand correctly then MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 could be a solution. I wonder if they are not too expensive in terms of processing needed? I'd be interested in any solution though if there is implementation in Perl that would be even better.

  • Clean conflicting class files from Temporary ASP.NET Files

    Class file Conflicts in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\ is preventing me from building the solution. Even though I try emptying out the folder, each time Visual Studio starts the build process, it brings in the class file in to the temp folder with the same folder name. If I restart the machine or leave it overnight, project build without error. Is there anyway to tell Visual studio to delete/ignore/clean any lingering class files that could be in the temp folder? Clean solution option in VS doesn't work either. Class file in conflict are from the App_Code folder.

The reason i'm asking is that my valuechangelistener method changes the values of the input boxes but when I run it, they don't seem to be rerender.     What is the best tool for creating an Excel Spreadsheet with C#. Ideally, I would like open source so I don't have to add any third party dependencies to my code, and I would like to avoid using Excel directly to create the file (using OLE Automation.) The .CSV file solution is easy, and is the current way I am handling this, but I but I would like to control the output formats. EDIT: I am still looking at these to see the best alternative for my solution. Interop will work, but it requires Excel to be on the machine you are using. Also the OLEDB method is intriguing, but may not yield much more than what I can achieve with CSV files. I will look more into the 2003 xml format, but that also puts a Excel 2003 requirement on the file. I am currently looking at a port of the PEAR (PHP library) Excel Writer that will allow some pretty good XLS data and formatting and it is in the Excel_97 compatible format that all modern versions of Excel support.     It's crunch time, deadline for my most recent contract is coming in two days and almost everything is complete and working fine (knock on wood) except for one issue. In one of my stored procedures, I'm needing to return a result set as follows. group_id | name A101 | Craig A102 | Craig Z101 | Craig Z102 | Craig A101 | Jim A102 | Jim Z101 | Jim Z102 | Jim B101 | Andy B102 | Andy Z101 | Andy Z102 | Andy The names need to be sorted by the first character of the group id and also include the Z101/Z102 entries. By sorting strictly by the group id, I get a result set as follows: A101 | Craig A102 | Craig A101 | Jim A102 | Jim B101 | Andy B102 | Andy Z101 | Andy Z102 | Andy Z101 | Jim Z102 | Jim I really can't think of a solution that doesn't involve me making a cursor and bloating the stored procedure up more than it already is. I'm sure a great mind out there has an elegant solution and I'm eager to see what the community can come up with. Thanks a ton in advance.

    hi, has anybody already programmed a iphone compass heading tilt compensation? i have got some approaches, but some help or a better solution would be cool! FIRST i define a vector Ev, calculated out of the cross product of Gv and Hv. Gv is a gravity vector i build out of the accelerometer values and Hv is an heading vector built out the magnetometer values. Ev stands perpendicular on Gv and Hv, so it is heading to horizonatl East. SECOND i define a vector Rv, calculated out of the cross product Bv and Gv. Bv is my looking vector and it is defined as [0,0,-1]. Rv is perpendicular to Gv and Bv and shows always to the right. THIRD the angle between these two vectors, Ev and Rv, should be my corrected heading. to calculate the angle i build the dot product and thereof the arcos. phi = arcos ( Ev * Rv / |Ev| * |Rv| ) Theoretically it should work, but maybe i have to normalize the vectors?!   • Multiple update panels and multiple postbacks cause entire page to refresh...

    I'm having the same problem I had yesterday... The solution Aristos provided helped solve the problem, but I have other places sending updatepanel postbacks causing the same problem. When an update panel is updated and another request for an update is called before it has a chance to render the first updates, the entire page refreshes instead of just the update panel. I used fiddler to see what was going on and here's what happens... If I wait for the request to return before doing another request I get this: 21443|updatePanel|dnn_ctr1107_CRM_SalesTool_LeadsUpdatePanel| But if I don't wait, I get this: 66|pageRedirect||http://mysite.com/salesdashboard.aspx| The code from the previous question is still the same except I added UpdateMode="Conditional" to the update panel. Any ideas? Or is the only solution to this making sure that 2+ updates for any number of update panels (as long as they're on the same page) never happen? Thanks, Matt

In the following I will describe the bug and clarify the requirements of the needed solution. Repro Steps: User visits A.aspx A.aspx uses Response.Redirect to bring the user to B.aspx#house On B.aspx#house, the user clicks a button that sets window.location.hash='test' Actual Results: B.aspx is loaded again. The URL now shows B.aspx#test Expected Results: No reload. The URL will just change to B.aspx#test Requirements: Page A must redirect to page B with a fragment identifier in the url Any user action on page B will set the location.hash Setting location.hash must not make page B refresh This must work on IE Notes: Bug only repros on IE (tested on ie6|7|8). Opera, FF, Chrome, Safari all have the expected results of no reload. This error may have nothing to do with ASP.NET, and everything to do with IE For any kind soul willing to have a look at this, I have created a minimal ASP.NET web project to make it easy to repro here

    Hopefully this question isn't as subjective as I think it may be. I have an Intranet application which needs to work with IE8 as the enterprise is replacing IE6 as the standard browser. Our testing team found that it did not work in IE8, little did they know that it actually did. Their browsers were set to run IE8 in compatibility mode for Intranet applications. I found that if I set the meta tag for X-UA-Compatible to IE=EmulateIE8 that I could force the browser to render this application as IE8 and the application worked fine. Are there any pitfalls that I don't know about for this solution? If so, is there a better solution?

  • Moving from WCF RIA Beta to RC: best practices?

    I have an existing WCF RIA project built on the Release Candidate; I'm now moving to the Release version & have discovered many changes. David Scruggs made the following comment on his (MSDN) blog: "If you’ve written anything in SIlverlight 4 RIA Services, you’ll need to rewrite it. There has been a lot of refactoring and namespace moves." Having made a brief attempt to compile the old solution with the new RIA framework I'm inclined to agree. My current plan is to: remove the Silverlight Business Application projects from the Solution rebuild the EF4 items from the database create a new Silverlight Business Application project re-add the files (XAML, CS) from the old Silverlight Business Application project Does this sound like a reasonable approach? I think it's cleaner than trying to manually alter the existing project.
