• A GFX card with two DVI and one HDMI with audio?

  I haven't upgraded my PC for a while nor kept up to date with pc hardware since 2007, but have recently come up with a requirement and I am wondering if I can solve it! Are there any graphics cards out there that have two DVIs and one HDMI output, with the HDMI supporting sound over it? Basically, I've got a two PC monitor setup, and both monitors are connected to the two DVI's of my GTX9800+. I want to upgrade my card to say, GTX 460, but can't find if there is such with two DVIs (for my monitors) and one HDMI with audio (for my TV). So I am wondering, if such solution possible at all? I noticed that there are some cards out there with two DVI's and one mini-HDMI, but they all say 'HDMI Output Yes x 1 (via DVI to HDMI adaptor x 1 )', which probably means that because of the DVI element, the audio won't work. • Has anyone found a (eg bash) shell terminal for Windows as good as the OS X one?

  I am mostly using 'git-bash' which came with the Windows install of Git vcs. I think it is the same one that comes with Cygwin. It works fine technically but the UI sucks: have to right-click the title bar and go to Properties to change the window width most annoyingly... copy and paste and highlight with the mouse are equally cumbersome In contrast, the Terminal app that comes with OS X manages these with aplomb and makes it so much more comfortable to work with. You can even drag and drop a file on it and it will paste the file path in at your cursor! I have also tried: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win-bash http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/bash/ http://www.hamiltonlabs.com/cshell.htm None of these do copy and paste of text without cumbersome right-clicking. I am specifically looking for a Unix-flavoured shell in Windows so I don't have to use different shells between my home dev (Windows), the live server (Linux) or dev at the office (Mac). Yes I have Googled and haven't found one yet...

  My goal is to figure out if i'm better off with one strong server, or multiple weaker servers with a load balancer. Does the fact of splitting the load between servers have an effect on the total load my website could take? It's hard to single that out, because there are of course a lot of parameters that affect the results, so some assumptions: Putting failover considerations aside - I know it matters, but for the sake of the question's simplicity, lets assume nothing fails. The servers in the multiple servers option have an accumulated "power" equivalent to the one server option (about the same amount of cores and RAM space). If that is too theoretical, here is a concrete question that could help: Suppose I have several instances of exactly the same server - lets call it S. Suppose that server S can serve a load of up to X calls per time unit. Will two S servers with a load balancer serve 2X calls per time unit? significantly more? significantly less?

• What could slow Excel on one PC but not another?

  I have 2 PC with the same configuration. I open an Excel File (~5M) on the network from both PC. The opening is not the fastest but that's ok. The problem is that on one PC, Excel is really slow. I mean if I hit the left arrow 10 times, I will have finished hitting like 3 seconds before the active cell is the next 10th one. The file contains graphics that takes time to initialize on the slowed computer. Both PC have the same graphic cards, same driver version; both remote access to the file on a local network. Both configured to perform calculations automatically. Both Excel 2007. Both Windows 32bit. On the other PC it runs really fast. I really don't know what to check next. Any suggestions ?

  I have an document/literal Axis 1 service which I'm consuming with an Axis 2 client (ADB databinding, generated from WSDL2Java). It receives a valid XML response, but in parsing that XML, I get the error "Unexpected Subelement" for any type which doesn't have a namespace defined in the response. I can resolve the error by manually changing the (auto-generated by Axis2) type-validation line to only check the type name and not the namespace as well, but is there a non-manual way to skip this? This service is consumed properly by other Axis 1 clients. Here's the response, with bits in ALL CAPS having been anonymized. Some types have namespaces, some have empty-string namespaces, and some have none at all. Can I control this via the service's WSDL, or in Axis2's WSDL2Java handling of the WSDL? Is there a fundamental mismatch between Axis 1 and Axis2?   Hi, I have the current scenario whereby an Article has only 1 Outcome each. Each Article may or may not have an Outcome. In theory, this is a one-to-one mapping, but since NHibernate does not really support one-to-one, I used a One-To-Many to substitute. My Primary Key on the child table is actually the ArticleID (FK).   Hi This is the third time I am asking this question. I am only looking for the syntax of how to solve this problem. I am using prestashop as the cart for my website. I have a problem; the website used to be in dynamic urls. I enabled friendly url writing. The problem is that one page has more than one url. You can access a same page from the dynamic url and static url. In fact a single page has 9 different urls. This obviously creates problems for seo as search engines penalize my website for this.   I am trying to set up an index page for the weekly magazine I work on. It is to show readers the names of companies mentioned in that weeks' issue, plus the page numbers they are appear on. I want to search all the PDF files for the week, where one PDF = one magazine page (originally made in Adobe InDesign CS3 and Adobe InCopy CS3). I have set up a list of companies I want to search for and, using PowerGREP and using delimited regular expressions, I am able to find most page numbers where a company is mentioned. However, where a company name contains two or more words, the search I am running will not pick up instances where the name appears over more than one line. For example, when looking for "CB Richard Ellis" and "Cushman & Wakefield", I got no result when the text appeared like this: DTZ beat BNP PRE, CB [line break here] Richard Ellis and Cushman & [line break here] Wakefield to secure the contract. [line end here] Could someone advise me on how to write a regular expression that will ignore white space between words and ignore line endings OR one that will look for the words including all types of white space (ie uneven spaces between words; spaces at the end of lines or line endings; and tabs (I am guessing that this info is imbedded somehow in PDF files). • Can Django admin handle a one-to-many relationship via related_name?

  The Django admin happily supports many-to-one and many-to-many relationships through an HTML <SELECT> form field, allowing selection of one or many options respectively. There's even a nice Javascript filter_horizontal widget to help. I'm trying to do the same from the one-to-many side through related_name. I don't see how it's much different from many-to-many as far as displaying it in the form is concerned, I just need a multi-select SELECT list. But I cannot simply add the related_name value to my ModelAdmin-derived field list. Does Django support one-to-many fields in this way? My Django model something like this (contrived to simplify the example): class Person(models.Model): ... manager = models.ForeignKey('self', related_name='staff', null=True, blank=True, ) From the Person admin page, I can easily get a <SELECT> list showing all possible staff to choose this person's manager from. I also want to display a multiple-selection <SELECT> list of all the manager's staff. I don't want to use inlines, as I don't want to edit the subordinates details; I do want to be able to add/remove people from the list. (I'm trying to use django-ajax-selects to replace the SELECT widget, but that's by-the-by.)

Python is installed on disk C on my computer: C:\Python25 And the twill folder (“twill-0.9”) is located here: E:\tmp\twill-0.9 Here is a code that I’ve been using in twill: go “some website’s sign-in page URL” formvalue 2 userid “my login” formvalue 2 pass “my password” submit go “URL of some other page from that website” save_html result.txt This code helps me to log in to one website, in which I have an account, record the HTML code of some other page of that website (that I can access only after logging in), and store it in a file named “result.txt” (of course, before using this code I firstly need to replace “my login” with my real login, “my password” with my real password, “some website’s sign-in page URL” and “URL of some other page from that website” with real URLs of that website, and number 2 with the number of the form on that website that is used as a sign-in form on that website’s log-in page) This code I store in “test.twill” file that is located in my “twill-0.9” folder: E:\tmp\twill-0.9\test.twill I run this file from my command prompt: python twill-sh test.twill Now, I also have installed “Google App Engine SDK” from “Google App Engine” and have also been using it for awhile. For example, I’ve been using this code: import hashlib m = hashlib.md5() m.update("Nobody inspects") m.update(" the spammish repetition ") print m.hexdigest() This code helps me transform the phrase “Nobody inspects the spammish repetition” into md5 digest. Now, how can I put these two pieces of code together into one python script that I could run on “Google App Engine”? Let’s say, I want my code to log in to a website from “Google App Engine”, go to another page on that website, record its HTML code (that’s what my twill code does) and than transform this HTML code into its md5 digest (that’s what my second code does). So, how can I combine those two codes into one python code? I guess, it should be done somehow by importing twill, but how can it be done? Can a python code - the one that is being run by “Google App Engine” - import twill from somewhere on the internet? Or, perhaps, twill is already installed on “Google App Engine”?

  I am trying to switch a table from being a many-to-one mapping to being many-to-many with an intermediate mapping table. However, when I switched it over and tried to do a query on it with NHibernate, it's giving me this error: "Interceptor.OnPrepareStatement(SqlString) returned null or empty SqlString." My query was originally something more complex, but I switched it to a basic fetch all and I'm still having the problem: Session.QueryOver<T>().Future(); It would seem to either be a problem in my model mapping files or something in my database. • Should I have one dll or multiple for Business Logic?

  In my situation, my company services many types of customers. Almost every customer requires their own Business Logic. Of course, there will be a base layer that all business logic should inherit from. However, I'm going back and forth on architecting this--either in one dll for all customers or one dll for each. My biggest point of contention deals with upgrading the software. We have about 12 data entry personnel that work with 20 companies and it's critical that they have little down time. My concern is that if I deploy everything in one dll, I could introduce a bug in company A's logic while only intending to update Company B's logic. I believe I could reduce the risk if each company's logic had their own dll, so then, I could deploy Company B's update w/o harming Company A's. -- I will be the only one supporting this. That said, this also seems like a nightmare to manage 20 different .dll's -- that's for the BLL alone. I also need to create a View layer and ViewModel layer. So, potentially, I could have 20 (companies) * 3 (layers) which would equate to 60 .dll's. Thank You.

  Which one gives you more advantages: Microsoft or SUN/Oracle certification? If you don't mind, please relate your answer to your career (dev, sys-admin, dba), industry (finance, general consulting, business apps, software house), and location (where you live, does it influence your decision?) as well. One reason I asked this because I heard that having MCP (in C#, MCSAD or whatever the cert is called these days) could give you extra point from the employer perspective if they're a Microsoft Partner. I don't quite understand why and am also wondering if SUN/Oracle certificate holder have similar edge/benefit. I'm also interested to know if Certification plays role where you live. For example: certification could be a big negative sign in Silicon Valley, but might be helpful if you're in other US/Canada cities or outside USA/Canada. If you are an independent software consultant, do these certification helps you win bids? I totally understand that this question might be subjective and could be "closed". But it doesn't hurt to ask I suppose. I also understand that there are people who dislike/disagree (or have negative perspective on technology certification). While there are people who have the opinion that "these are not the kind of employers you would want to work with", I respect you guys, but sometime a pure software product company might not exist in certain cities in the world. And if certification can help one's career somewhere else, I guess that means more opportunities right? I've had experienced in both platforms: (short) .NET and (not too long) Java (minus Oracle DB stuff), but I think it's about time I have to pick one of them and be good at. • Force dual-mono audio (L+L or R+R) in Youtube video playback for one-channel audio movies

  Occasionally, I find Youtube videos that have only one audio channel (only left or only right); example video (left channel only). This is quite annoying, especially with headphones on, as I hear sound in one ear, and no sound in the other. So, I want to be able to easily force dual mono (Left+Left or Right+Right) when I find that kind of video, and switch to normal stereo after I finish watching it. I have my headphones plugged well / I don't create audio/video - I want it for real-time playback only, In Windows audio config, setting balance 100% to Left / Right doesn't help (I have either still only left when moved to left, and no sound at all when moved to right), I've checked all the configurations in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback > Advanced like suggested in this post, in conjunction with moving balance left/right, and it doesn't seem to have any impact on actual sound I hear in headphones, No need to mix L with R, I just want L+L or R+R, I prefer software solutions to buying a stereo-to-mono adapter, Free solutions please, no $$$ ones, neither trials etc., In Control Panel > Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager I can turn on various mumbo-jumbo effects like: Concert Hall / Hangar / Bathroom / whatever environment (and in fact it makes the sound appear in two ears, but well, it's ridiculous to do this;), but there is no Dual Mono option. Finally, I know I can force L+L or R+R in VLC Player which supports Youtube (well, a little hack is needed, because Youtube internals change from time to time) but it is not very convenient to launch VLC just to play Youtube video - I want to keep it in the browser, I use Firefox generally (but well, if I don't find easier way, I will launch it in VLC).

• apache pointing to the wrong version of python on ubuntu how do I change?

  I am setting up a flask application on and Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS EC2 instance and everything seemed to be working well (i.e. I could get to the webpage via the publicly available url) until I tried to import a module (e.g. numpy) and realised the apache python differs from the one I used to compile the mod_wsgi and also the one I am using I am running apache2. • Ripping CD Audio simultaneously from 2 drives on one PC via USB or PATA - rip accuracy preserved?

  I'm considering ripping audio (reading audio) from CDs using 2 drives simultaneously to speed up the process of ripping the CDs - i.e. 2 at a time rather than 1. Are there any issues with achieving maximum rip accuracy? In general I wondered if people have tried this and if the simultaneous streams from both rip activities would overload the host machine and cause packet loss or read retries resulting in a sub-standard CD-DA Audio CD rip? If it just means the rip is slightly slower (but still faster than sequentially doing one rip followed by another) but still of maximum accuracy then that is OK for me. I will be using dbPowerAmp to rip the CDs and converting to FLAC lossless format. Specific examples: There are 2 machines I intend to do it on: A Toshiba NB100 1.6Ghz Atom netbook, 2Gb RAM, running Windows XP Home with 1 external LG DVD/CD burner and external 1 LG Blu-ray burner attached via USB 2.0, ripping to the machine's 5400rpm internal hard drive. This rips from one CD drive very well, more than adequate, it is a nippy, fast little machine for its specification. A Desktop PC running Windows 7 Home Premium with MSI P4M900M2-L/ MS-7255v2.0 motherboard and 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, 7200rpm hard drive and 2Gb RAM, with an internal LG PATA DVD/CD burner (master) and a Philips DVD/CD burner (slave) on the same PATA bus (perhaps separate buses would be another option to consider here). Thoughts?

  I ran yum update on my CentOS5 webserver a few days ago. Today I just noticed that I have 3 httpd-* rpms! How can I end up with three RPMs for httpd (My other servers only have one httpd rpm). I want to make sure that my server has a patched, updated version of /usr/sbin/httpd. How can I tell which one of these packages provides the httpd binary at /usr/sbin/httpd? • Is 30 calls / second a lot for one IIS server?

  We have a RIA application that 300 clients concurrently use in an intranet environment. Together they make 30 calls / second to IIS (asp.net) (actually it's 60 but calls are loadbalanced over two IIS servers). Half of the calls is getting an asset (Caching Profile is used so most of the time cache is hit), the other half is saving data to a sql server. Retrieving an asset is done with a aspx page. Saving the data happens via WebORB, asp.net and Sql Server. So some processing is needed by WebORB (amf decoding, GZIP, ...). We also use Spring.NET, and some of the container objects have a request scope (not a lot). IIS servers -- Virtual machines, 4 CPU, 2 gb RAM. They are based on Windows 2008 x64 SP2 Enterprise Edition. Sql Server 2008 is used. Apparently CPU of both IIS serers is constantly around 60-70%. Now, my question, is the load of 60-70% acceptable and how could we possible bring that down to less % (maybe using only one IIS server)? + Is 2 gb RAM enough? Assets can be up to 20mb, but on average, they are about 30kb. (the load of 60-70% is achieved with assets around 30kb). The data that gets saved with weborb is very small (2kb) and is just one object.

When receiving e-mails from google (google apps with own domain) for example, the header looks like this: [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dkim=pass reason="1024-bit key; insecure key" header.d=yyy.com [email protected] header.b=OswLe0N+; dkim-adsp=pass; dkim-atps=neutral<br> [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; spf=pass (sender SPF authorized) smtp.mailfrom=yyy.com (client-ip=2a00:1450:400c:c00::242; helo=mail-wg0-x242.google.com; [email protected]; [email protected]) [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dmarc=pass header.from=yyy.com<br> [...] This means any of these programs creates it's own Authentication-Results:-Line. Is it possible to tell postfix to merge this into one single Authentication-Results:-Line? When I send an e-mail to google, it says: [...] Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as permitted sender) [email protected]; dkim=pass [email protected]; dmarc=pass (p=NONE dis=NONE) header.from=xxx.com [...] And this is exactly what I want. • Can one really fry a monitor by setting the wrong HorizSync and VertRefresh?

  I've encountered this problem on several different systems with several different monitors: a monitor functions perfectly under Windows. I install a Linux and the max resolution is at some impossibly low value, mostly 640x480, changing it in Xorg.conf doesn't work. The X.org log file then shows that the driver cannot determine the correct refresh rate for the monitor, so it ignores everything in Xorg.conf and just loads in some default minimalistic mode. Googling the problem leads to an easy solution: set the HorizSync and VertRefresh in Xorg.conf, and everything works. The problem seems to be a common one, and I've seen dozens of results recommending the solution. Each of them contains the warning that you should use the value ranges provided with the monitor. Because if you don't, and your video card sends a signal with the wrong refresh rate, this can damage your monitor. Of course, you don't have a user manual for your monitor any more. If you are lucky to find one on the attic or on the net, it doesn't contain any information about the supported refresh rate. So you just type in the value suggested in the solution description, which varies wildly depending on your source, and cross your fingers. You restart, and... ... you've set the wrong values. So the monitor shows a short message like "input signal out of range", and you do a hard restart, repair your Xorg.conf in recovery mode, and everything is fine, including your monitor. So does this warning reflect a real possibility, or is it just a geeky urban legend? Or is it something which used to happen in the past, before manufacturers started protecting the monitors against it? Is it technically possible with every monitor technology, or is it maybe something which can only happen to a CRT? If you think that it's true, why? Have you ever witnessed a monitor die from the wrong refresh config, or have you read of it in a reputable source?

• How should I configure my Active Directory servers so that if one goes down, users are not kicked off SQL?

  Today, we shut down one of our Active Directory servers during office hours to check the loading on a UPS. Since all the server did was provide Active Directory in a separate building incase the main building caught fire, or whatever, we didn't think it would have any effect on our users. Seconds after the server was shut down, we had a dozen phone calls from users experiencing this issue:- [Microsoft SQL Server Login] SQLState: '28000' [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with authentication. Once we realized what had happened, we quickly rebooted the down Active Directory server. Problem solved. But why did this happen. And what if one day a server has a breakdown and is offline for hours, or days? Shouldn't the other Active Directory servers in the domain service authentication requests without disruption to users? We have 3 Windows Server 2003 Standard servers running Active Directory as Domain Controllers with Global Catalogs, all physically located on the same network at Gigabit speeds. I believe the domain was originally Windows Server 2000, or maybe even NT 4.0. Could the issue be to down to old Group Policies inherited from these old server OS's, or some default setting in Active Directory that needs changing?
