  • Bonjour for Windows vs. SMB for printer sharing

    My landlord would like to print to her printer connected to her Mac from Windows machines in her house. (I'm unsure of what versions of windows, but I assume Vista or 7.) Looking at these docs from Apple, it sounds like I can set up the share via Bonjour for Windows or SMB. What are the pros and cons of doing it one way or the other? Has anybody who has tried both found one more reliable than the other, or is it pretty much a tossup?

  • How to remap a MacBook keyboard to windows keys in bootcamp?

    I just discovered bootcamp and I'm psyched that I can run Windows 7 RC on the MacBook Pro without using a virtual machine. However the virtual machines run a bit better because they support remapping the MacBook's keyboard. Currently I can't find an equivalent of the delete key (it is Fn + Delete when running Windows via Fusion or Parallels, but it doesn't work on a bootcamp install of Windows) Has anyone come up with a clever workaround?

  • removing the .local in local network name serving

    I have several local machines; I use a OSX 10.6 machine to do most of the serving. Annoyingly, it postfixes its network name with .local. How would I set up a system so that I could access it by its hostname? server: httpd apache2 default install I am accessing it with a web browser(surprisingly). also when I ping my osx machine as name, it doesn't work; ping name.local does work.

The script works fine but it fails while stopping and starting IIS.The account I use for remote connection is an admin on that box.   • Windows XP SP3 client printer error over AD

    I have Windows Server 2008r2 and a Windows XP SP3 client machine in Active Directory. My problem is that I've installed the printer on the windows server and shared it, the permissions are right, but when i try to connect to that printer from the windows xp client, it throws the following errer: "You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer". Again, the permissions are right. I think I'm missing something that I couldn't find on the web. :( please help!

  • No outbound connections for apache2

    I'm unable to hit my server from a browser on another machine (it gives a 'connection has timed out' error), although typing http://localhost or http://my-ip-here works from the browser within the machine. I can ping and ssh into the server from other machines; it just seems like apache is rejecting the port-80 browser connections. What can I do to further diagnose/fix this problem?     Hi, is it possible to set up an Apache server on a machine which is part of a LAN, then allow machines on the LAN to access the server via a custom ServerName (instead of Localhost). Is there a place online I can download the 8.1 upgrade from home on my fast internet so I can do a network or usb install at the office? I don't want to have to download 3GB+ of updates on each and every machine through the Windows store over our slow internet connection.   • Can I use REG_EXPAND_SZ for the locations of shell folders instead of REG_SZ

    I'm working on re-arranging a number of the shell folders in windows 7 to utilize Dropbox to keep a set of machines in sync. I'd like to create a .reg file which I can use to update the locations of these folders rather than manually changing them from the UI, but I don't want to rely on the path to the home folder being the same each time. So my question is, is it possible to replace the REG_SZ values in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders with REG_EXPAND_SZ values specifying an offset from %HOME% instead of an exact path?

    We are doing embedded device and due to low memory contraints and closed enviroment best option there would be using one of TLS-PSK ChiperSuites (pre shared key - no asymetric cryptography). As far as I see there is no TLS-PSK support in Schannel http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa374757%28VS.85%29.aspx but is there any way to use TLS-PSK on IIS?

  • can't delete some files or change their attributes on my FTP server

    I've installed a CMS on a shared host running Apache, now when I was deleting the root directory with FTP, some folders left with a "Permission denied" error and I can't change their attributes. the best explanation I've got is that the CMS installer has placed the files and has assigned its ownership to the Apache server instead of my user name. (i don't know it can be done) Ijust haven't use the uninstaller because I've lost my admin password - -" so how to delete those folders ?

    I want to run my Firewall/NAT software (pfsense) and an internal NAS (looking at freenas right now) for my SOHO on one machine. Right now I have them separated on two different machines, but I'd like to consolidate them. Is this generally a bad idea? I see the security concern where if the firewall or host OS is compromised, then your data is essentially screwed. But is it really a concern for me?
