• cannot boot Ubuntu after removing packages?

  I have problem now with booting into Ubuntu because I removed some packages from package manager and its dependencies by mistake. After I saw desktop removing applications one by one and the theme starting to disappear. After I tried to restart the login, I tried to fix it usinh recovery mode but it's not working. I am sure there are important packages removed, the problem is that I have no backup for my files .. Also, I need my firefox stored passwords. , I tried to boot to Ubuntu live CD but files encrypted in home folder and no access to it !! is there away to access it ?

  I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

  In Google Analytics we're trying to add a property for each website of a WordPress multisite network. It works well for all of the sub-site but one. In the Default URL field we used the following: www.mywebsite.no/ - works www.mywebsite.no/nurse - works, as does a few other sub-sites www.mywebsite.no/doctor - doesn't work In the last case we get the following error: Value is not a valid domain. (e.g. example.com, www.example.com) We can't change the name of the sub-site but GA just won't accept the URL. Why is this and what can we do to solve this?

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

• How can I modify the knetworkmanager icon in my kde taskbar?

  I am using kubuntu 12.04 Precise 64 on my notebook. Almost everything works fine. I would like to modify the colors of the icon(s) used by knetworkmanager to indicate wifi online. Right now, I am using the (default?) Oxygen theme. What I want is to make the online icons some color other than gray - probably black, so the contrast is greater and they're easier for me to see (I use reading glasses.) I found an old article on how to do this, but when I added the icons it mentioned, they were ignored. Where are these icons stored? Can I just edit them with something like gimp to change the colors, etc.? TIA

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

  I'm so sorry because this question doesn't related to Ubuntu. I asked in Openstack forum but this forum is not very active. So I think if someone have experience with Openstack Nova can help me with my problem. I've read some explanations about nova-network and how to configure it like this one from wiki: http://wiki.openstack.org/UnderstandingFlatNetworking I'm confusing about a detail. If every traffic from the instances must go through nova controller node, then why we still need the public interface for nova-compute node? Is it necessary? What happen when a request from outside to an instance. For example I have a controller node and a nova-compute node. In nova-compute node I run an instance with a Wordpress website. Then someone connect to the public IP of this instance. So the request go directly from router to the nova-compute node or from router to controller node then nova-compute node? Thank you!

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps.   I am the webadmin of a WordPress site that serves up http pages statically. The problem is that some of the pages are shown as https in Google search results. For instance, if the search term "Example Press Kit" is entered the search result site link comes up as: https://example.com/presskit/ We don't have a site ssl certificate, so surfers are being bounced. I have tried everything. Most recently I created a new website in Google WebAdmin for the https version of our home page. Then, I added sitelinks that should have redirected site links intended for https://example.com/* to http://example.com/*. But it doesn't work! Google still shows a dead link to http://example.com/presskit. I didn't think dead links lasted very long on Google results, but there they are, two weeks later. Any ideas?

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? Why have I lost all my google image juice? Should I just wait some more, how long before really worrying?

• Boot delay and mouse lag at login after Ubuntu 12.04 update

  I am facing these weird problems after updating Ubuntu 12.04 with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade: It takes too much time to come to the Plymouth theme after selecting Ubuntu from the grub menu. Is it possible to correct this? On the login screen, before entering the password, whenever I move the mouse, it is kind of lagging/stuck. Only after entering the password and pressing Enter, it works normally. I think this may be because of the updated kernel. If so, is it possible to downgrade the kernel to the previous one ? If that is not the reason, what can be the problem?

• How can I stop a bot attack on my site?

  I have a site (built with wordpress) that is currently under a bot attack (as best I can tell). A file is being requested over and over, and the referrer is (almost every time) turkyoutube.org/player/player.swf. The file being requested is deep within my theme files, and is always followed by "?v=" and a long string (i.e. r.php?v=Wby02FlVyms&title=izlesen.tk_Wby02FlVyms&toke). I've tried setting an .htaccess rule for that referrer, which seems to work, except that now my 404 page is being loaded over and over, which is still using lots of bandwidth. Is there a way to create an .htaccess rule that requires no bandwidth usage on my part? I also tried creating a robots.txt file, but the attack seems to be ignoring that. #This is the relevant part of the .htaccess file: RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} turkyoutube\.org [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F]

• problem with template: negative margins on float

  hi, i'm having a very strange problem with the wordpress template. i'd like to place 2 divs besides each other like this: <div style='float:left;'> left div </div> <div style='float:right'> right div </div> normally this works as it should - both divs should stick directly to each other - but something in the style.css (which uses css reset) causes the right div to overlap the left div with ~ 5pixels. i searched the whole .css for it but couldn't find out :(( it's just a fact that it must be something with the default css. anyone knows what is causing this - some fix? thanks

  I have a script, and now it's the perfect time to have an option to change theme templates. I was looking forward to store these files in php files, or html files. with CSS file. I looked over some codes and I found that they use brackets to refer to the variable. Here's an example of a template block: <div class='block_div'> <center>{title}</center> {content} </div> I know that I can use PHP vars usering <?=$var;?>. I am not some noob on his first game so I appreciated constructive answers instead of "its hard, don't do it". What I want is to know how simulation game mechanics are put together. I figure it would be heaver on the AI than normal games and not knowing much about AI would like to know some programming techniques I should look into for this style game. specific techniques please not just a book on ai. what sort of architecture would be used?   Is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers? I'm working for a small development shop and 99% of the problems that I'm having is regarding curl. Most of the projects that I'm working on involves calling a web API. Most web API's suggests using curl by default since you have to pass in a POST data in the request. Every time I complain to my senior that the server that I'm working on doesn't have curl installed the excuse that I'm always getting is that curl is not needed you can always use file_get_contents. So the question: is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers that runs PHP, should I always develop using file_get_contents and not curl? Are there any advantages of using file_get_contents over curl or vise versa? If it helps, the context here is wordpress plugins, shopify apps, drupal modules and other bits of code that a lot of people can install.

  Hi! There's a bug with the menue of filezilla: When opening filezilla there is no menue list. Very inconvenient because you can't open the "settings"-dialog. There are several workarounds that I tried - none of them really work. change theme while filezilla is running, menue reapperars. Once you close and reopen it the menue is gone again. add "export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0" " to .bash.rc or just call it before starting filezilla. Doesn't have any effect for me - menue still missing. tried "sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk" cause it's obviously to do with unity but the funny thing is even this method has bo effect at all! How can I fix this? How to do the troubleshooting? thx fior reading, p.
