Dave Lumley presents a Reporting services disaster recovery solution for SQL Server Standard Edition, using 2 servers. Worth the read if you don't run Enterprise.
I've successfully install Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (x86) on an old(er) laptop that unfortunately has a broken screen, so there is an external monitor plugged in. On the livecd it come up on the secondary display just fine and I was able to install ubuntu and everything.
Unfortunately when I reboot into Ubuntu proper now, the secondary display is off and I'm literally driving blind here trying to switch it to the secondary display.
Using Nvidia open source drivers.
Things I've tried:
Rebooting back into livecd, mounting the partition and trying in vain to find a config file (it uses the open source drivers so no Xorg.conf I could edit manually)
Trying to blind-type xrandr settings into what I hope is terminal:
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto
(nothing happened)
Trying to blind install openssh-server so I could ssh into it and maybe configure it from my working computer. For some reason though, no luck.
Ubuntu really should default to expanding to all screens for this use case.
<b>the Human Journey:</b> "...while servers are individually more important, you can far more easily, cheaply, and effectively test and upgrade your server fleet than you can your desktops and laptops."
I've been trying to find a solution on how to change the screen resolution on the login screen and other users. .xprofile will only affect my account. I've been searching for a few months but I got nothing. Please help. It would be easier if the "Default Resolution" was still there in the monitors settings. Plus, I'm afraid of editing the xorg.conf. Last time was ugly...
My specs:
HP dc5000 Small Form Factor
Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot i386
Intel Pentium 4 2.40 GHz
Intel 82865g x86/MMX/SSE2 Integrated Graphics (Standard Experience, OpenGL 1.3 and Runs Unity 3D :P)
SoundMax Integrated Audio Card
Broadcomm Integrated Ethernet
994.1 MiB RAM
38.3 GB HDD
Acer X203H (Maximum Resolution 1600x900)
I run several different web pages on different servers (with different IP addresses). These pages are linking to each other in order to boost number of back links pointing to my pages.
I would like to move all those projects to a single virtual host (with a single IP address). My question is, how google handles links within different domain names but same ip address. Is there some penalization for it? Could this lead to lower page rank?
In this great site http://www.connectionstrings.com/ you can find about 517 connection strings and 120 providers, drivers and class libraries listed in the database. These for Database Servers as well Data Files. Just you need to choose the needed element then you will get all the information that you calling for. Hope this helps,
Many people deploy performance monitoring solutions in a "one-size-fits-all" manner. That is, they tend to build a solution that can be easily deployed to multiple servers and capture basic information from each server. The trouble is that not every server is identical, not even within the same shop. For example, not every server may have database mirroring deployed, which means your performance monitoring solution may be missing some critical pieces of information with regards to monitoring database mirroring.
Torrent files are being increasingly scrapped for magnet links, "mini torrent files" in concise and plain-text form that can be simply copy pasted around. Those link to the actual .torrent file "in the BitTorrent cloud", without relying on servers that may be temporarily overtaxed ("OMG NEW UNBUNT MUST GET NAO") or simply offline.
Does Canonical offer magnet links for their Torrent distributions? Where can one find them?
<b>PC World:</b> "Kubuntu 10.4 ("Lucid Lynx") hit the servers late last week so I thought I'd upgrade. Plenty of people appear to have had a great upgrade experience. Mine was a nightmare. But few Linux disasters are unrecoverable. Here's how I got through mine ... albeit with a few outstanding issues."
With Reporting Services 2008, it is now much easier to produce charts from data in SQL Server, and the variety of charts seems almost limitless. All you need to get started is a quick step-by-step guide that tells you the basics and gets you past the stage of creating the first chart. Well, here it is.

When trying to create simple file copy backups in Windows, a common problem is locked files which can trip up the operation. Whether the file is currently opened by the user or locked by the OS itself, certain files have to be completely unused in order to be copied. Thankfully, there is a simple solution: Shadow Copies. Using our simple tool, you can easily access shadow copies which allows access to point-in-time copies of the currently locked files as created by Windows Restore. This T-SQL Tuesday is about Automation in SQL Server, and I'll bet you think I'm going to talk about PowerShell. Well, you're partially right. What I'd like to talk about today, though, is setting up alerts to automate some responses to naturally occuring phenomena on your SQL Servers. (Note: I first introduced this technique in an article on Simple Talk here ). Without going back to the original article, I'm talking about a safety valve process for when your transaction logs start to fill at rates...(read more)

I have a Thinkpad T61p with Quadro FX570M. I just installed the Ubuntu 11.10.
I have tried to download the driver LINUX DISPLAY DRIVER - X86 version 295.20 from NVIDIA, but I do not manage to install it. If I open System Screens, there is an unknovn screen driver.
My installation works fine except, fails on resume with a black and white pattern all over the screen and I have difficulties detecting an external monitor.
Please, if you have any clue - help me out.

How can we move our domain name from 1&1's control over to our new host with as little affect (if any) on downtime for our domain name.
We've tried moving name servers before and our site went dark despite us defining all the old records on to the new name server host, now this time we're going to move the entire domain to another company but we've been bit so many times by this that I'm trying to find out what the process should be, and whether it can be done in a way to prevent down time
I have the same web application running on several different servers.
Now I want a central place to administer everything in one web interface. What is the best way to do this?
Should I provide a REST interface on every web application and let the admin application make all the calls?
This seems like a common problem that's already been solved by smarter people than me.
UPDATE: I want to change the application data per web application + see the results per web application

SQL Server places data into cache as it reads it from disk so as to speed up future queries. This dmv lets you see how much data is cached at any given time and knowing how this changes over time can help you ensure your servers run smoothly and are adequately resourced to run your systems. This dmv gives the number of cached pages in the buffer pool along with the database id that they relate to: USE [tempdb]
GO
SELECT COUNT(*) AS cached_pages_count ,
