• Remote desktop sessions - Unwanted automatic log off after period of time

  I'm having an issue whenever I connect to any of our servers via RDP - After a certain period of time, it seems to close these sessions, closing all the applications i had open etc... This is particularly annoying if I am running a long process - for example, copying a file - it cuts it off... I then re-connect via RDP, and it effectively loads a new session. Is this set somewhere in Group Policy? Or somewhere else? This is happening on Windows 2008 (it may also be on our 2003 servers, although I haven't noticed...)

• Application Launcher for Hyper-V Server

  We are currently in the process of setting up a HyperV R2 Server machine. Though there's not a lot we need to do wihtin the HyperV Server itself, the command line is sure minimalistic. There are a few administrative / Hardware Monitoring tools that we want to run on he machine itself (accessed through remote desktop). I am looking for a simple program/application launcher where we can hook up these maintenance tools (and one to open a new cmd.exe window in case I habitually close the one I'm working in!) However, all tools I tried by now more or less assume explorer is present, and fail in different ways. Before I go and write a simple one myself, any recommendations?

• How can I set a time-limit on a batch file?

  I have a batch file that calls an external program that periodically hangs. What I would like to do is set a time limit on the batch file / CMD prompt such that it automatically closes after a certain period of time. One catch is that the external program that hangs may have one or more instances running at a given time, and I only want the batch file hitting its time limit to close the instance of the program triggered by the batch. How can I accomplish this? Ideally a solution would work on Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

• "Thunderbird is already running" error every time I try to start Thunderbird, even if it is not running

  I cannot open Thunderbird. The process isn't running, but when I click on the icon, I get the the following error: Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system. I've tried the following: Ending the task in Task Manager Deleting parent.lock Uninstalling Thunderbird Uninstalling Firefox Running Thunderbird in software "safe mode" and Windows safe mode What can I do to fix this problem? The problem looks more serious than expected. I do not see any Mail folder in my profile at C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Mozilla\Thunderbird. I think I lost my email.

• Hybrid drive not booting faster than a normal HD

  I have used Windows 7 to create an image of my existing standard 160GB HD and copied this image back to a bigger 500GB Seagate hybrid drive. After copying the image to the hybrid I had to resize the partition, which was fine but after rebooting a few times to "teach" the hybrid, I have no increase in boot speed. It still takes 20-25 seconds to close down and then over a minute to start up. Is this something to do with the way the image lays itself on the drive indiscriminately? Do I need to load the OS on the drive from scratch to get the benefits? My PC with an i5 processor, is using AHCI mode.

• How do I get Chrome to not try to open in Windows 8 mode?

  It's not that I'm trying to make it more like 7. That's not the problem. My problem is that whenever I click the Google Chrome icon on my taskbar or even the desktop, Windows brings up this screen-spanning message box saying that my resolution is too low to launch run Google Chrome, and to set my computer to a higher resolution. (I can't.) It then continues to open Chrome correctly after I hit close. This also happens when I click a link in an external program like skype or psi.

• Scripts under pm/sleep.d are not getting called when suspending with KDE 4.3

  Fujitsu-Siemens H240, Slackware-current, KDE 4.3.2. I would like to perform some additional steps when my laptop suspends. I found this SU question which is very close to what I am asking, however the scripts that I placed in that directory are not being called for me. This could be a Slackware thing, or its possible that KDE has a different location for these scripts. I am suspending by using the "Suspend" radio button on the "Guidance Power Manager" dialog of KDE. Is there a standard location where I can place my scripts so they'll be run before and then after the machine has suspended?

• WinXP Movie Maker Codec Error

  I'm trying to use Windows XP Movie Maker, but when I try to import an AVI video, it shows an error telling me that it wasn't import due to an the fact that the codec wasn't available (I'm able to see the video using the windows media player) First, the error message suggested to enable the option "download codecs automatically" under "tools options general". I did it. But know the error tells me that the codec wasn't available and, if I already installed it, I should reinitialize movie maker. I also already did it... The error msg is: The file D:\movie1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. Any hints?

• Recover open but deleted file on Linux using ln instead of cp

  Say I have a file that's downloading (from a source that's hard to re-download from), but accidentally deleted from the filesystem namespace (/tmp/blah), and I'd like to recover this file. Normally I could just cp /proc/$PID/fd/$FD /tmp/blah, but in this case that would only get me a partial snapshot, since the file is still downloading. Furthermore, once the download completes, the downloading process (e.g. Chrome) will close the FD. Any way to recover by inode/create a hard link? Any other solutions? If it makes any difference, I'm mainly concerned with ext4. Thanks in advance.

  Supposing I know that someFile.php contains the definition for someFunction(). How would I go about displaying the whole body of the function in stdout? If I know that the body is 10 lines long then I would use cat someFile.php | grep -A 10 "function someFunction" [1] but in reality the function could be any arbitrary length. I figured that with sed I could use Vimesque commands such as /function someFunction<Return>/{<Return>% [2] but I can't figure out exactly how to format it. Ideally, the PHPDoc before the function would be output along with the function. Any help or links to the appropriate fine manual would be appreciated. Thanks! • Why does explorer restart automatically when I kill it with Process.Kill?

But if I use taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe, or kill it from the task manager, it doesn't restart. Why is that? What's the difference? How can I close explorer.exe from code without restarting it? • Trouble with installing VMWare-Player 3

  After downloading the VMware-Player 3 from the VMware-Site I wanted to install it; because I used an older VMware-Player the system wanted this to be deinstalled this version first. After starting the deinstallation I had trouble with my machine - shutdown - now I have no proper deinstallation of the older VMware-Player and everytime, I want to install the 3.0, I get an error-message. Is there any possibility, to clean up the rest of the older installation (3-4 processes are still active or are starting again, when I try to close them and therefore I can't delete different .dll-files by hand)? One more application named "TVS" also running in and found there were many connections per second occurring to port 5009. netstat tool mentions that some fast connection open/close seen for port 5009 So first it will be listening mode like shown below TCP 0.0.0.0:5009 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING then establishes connection like TCP 127.0.0.1:5009 TEAMER12:49519 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:5009 TEAMER12:60903 ESTABLISHED After that iwill become TIME_WAIT and i could see several entries like shown below TCP 127.0.0.1:49156 TEAMER12:5009 TIME_WAIT after that it will establish connection like TCP 127.0.0.1:60903 TEAMER12:5009 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:64181 TEAMER12:microsoft-ds ESTABLISHED again it will go several entries like TIME_WAIT TCP 127.0.0.1:49156 TEAMER12:5009 TIME_WAIT Finally it will establish like this TCP 172.26.127.40:139 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING TCP 172.26.127.42:139 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING TCP 172.26.127.42:5009 TEAMER12:64445 ESTABLISHED TCP 172.26.127.42:64445 TEAMER12:5009 ESTABLISHED Can any body tell me whats the reason behind why many connections per second occurring to port 5009 and why application slow?

• Write permission when mounting Windows shares from Ubuntu

  I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents, but when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file). What gives?

• Find edited Word attachment opened via Windows Mail (Vista)

  If you open (not save) a Word attachment in Windows Mail, then it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. This is saved somewhere, and you can edit the file and save it (i.e. no "save as" dialog appears). If you then close Word without explicitly saving the file somewhere, how do you then find the edited file? (Assuming that it can be found, and isn't automatically deleted). Windows Search does not find the file (presumably because it's in the folders that are excluded from search).

  I have a live video streaming in my server using nginx + php. the php file reas a live streaming and it directly sends it to the client. I have only one problem. The problem is that i want each request to be in a new process of php-fpm. In a few words i don't want to have idle timeout for a process but instead i want them to close instant when a request is being closed. With idle timeout i have huge problems which are hard to explain at the moment but i'm really sure that if i disable the idle timeout everything will be perfect. Is there any way to do this? I'm using on demand php-fpm

• Notepad/Edit equivalent for Linux command line

  I'm looking for a simple text editor that I can use from the command line in Linux to edit files. I'm used to editing files in windows, so I'm looking for something with the same keyboard interface. That means: SHIFT+Arrow Keys/PGUP/PGDN to select text CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+V to copy/cut/paste And that's pretty much it. Surprisingly I'm having a tough time finding something like this. Vi/emacs are naturally out. Nano comes close, but has its own non-standard cut/paste/select keyboard shortcuts. Surely this thing exists somewhere.   Hi, I'm trying to set up something on my network so that when users connect and try and use the internet they are re-directed to a locally-hosted terms and conditions and policy page. Once they click "accept" then they will be passed through to their homepage, otherwise if they decline then the window will close or show them an error message. Edit /etc/inet/ipnodes, change /etc/defaultrouter, reboot in opensolaris there is not defaultrouter file. first thing I tried was System-admin-network switch to manual enter static address and netmask and gateway. press 'activate' "this interface cannot be activated". No error messages given. Close widget, open again. Now hangs for a minute and then closes try edit /etc/inet/ipnodes, reboot eth card not up. Network widget hangs then closes Works perfectly on DHCP

  Hi I'm a little confused to say the least when it comes to video formats and protocols. I'd like to view my laptop output on my HD TV. The TV has HDMI, S-Video, and RCA inputs. My laptop has a VGA female port on the side for driving a 2nd monitor, and an S-VHS output at the back. No, it has no DVI, which I've heard is a poor decision from DELL, and even poorer decision on my part to buy it. Can I get true HD output from this to my TV? What cable do I need, or would I need a converter? Any other suggestions are also welcome, such as how to get something close to HD on my TV. Thanks! Bernhard

• What would be better in my case - apache, nginx or lighttpd ?

  Hey everybody, I'm writing a php site that's expected to get about 200-300 concurrent users browsing it. When initializing the application will load about 30 php classes, some 10 maybe 15 images and a couple of css files. So my question is what else can I do (except optimizing my code and using apc/eaccelerator for php) to get as close as possible to those numbers of concurrent users ? Currently we haven't chosen a server for the site to be hosted on but most probably it'll be a VPS Dual core + 2 or maybe 4gb ram. Is it possible for such a server to handle that load ? Also how could I test it myself and be sure that it'll be able to handle it ? Thanks in advance, Me

• How do I open a pdf file with PDF X-Change Viewer so that I can still modify the pdf source?

  Whenever I open a pdf file with PDF X-Change Viewer it locks up the source pdf file to edits. Is there a way to open the pdf (with PDF X-Change Viewer) so that it doesn't lock-up the source file --- perhaps as a shell command with an option? The background: I use LaTeX to edit my pdf files, and preview the result with PDF X-Change Viewer. I must first close PDF X-Change Viewer before I can preview any changes I make in the LaTeX source. It would be nice if PDF X-Change Viewer did not lock-up the pdf source so that I could modify it without first closing PDF X-Change Viewer.
