  • Is there a limit to how many sites can be hosted on a single IP address when using HTTP Host Headers on Windows 2008?

    For reasons that are lost in the mists of time, our older Windows (2000, 2003) servers have been configured with a "Administrative" IP address and three further "Hosting" IP addresses. There are also additional IP's for sites with SSL certificates. The "Administrative" IP address is where all our internal provisioning, monitoring and other such apps are bound to. We lock this down and don't permit access to it from the outside world (other than over our VPN). The three "Hosting" IP addresses are used for IIS website hosting (in conjunction with host headers). Historically, new site IP address allocations have been rotated through these three IP addresses. I'm not really sure why. I'm building a new batch of servers and I'm considering just having a single hosting IP address. Our servers can host up to 1200 sites on a single machine. Is there a technical limit to the number of IIS sites that can bind to a single IP address? Our Linux platform seems to do just fine with just a single shared IP + host headers. I initially thought this might be an SEO thing, but given that IPv4 address space conservation is paramount I hardly think Google or other search engines could reasonably penalise site rankings just because hundreds of sites hang off the same IP.

    Hi, I completed a project an year ago. Now a few modification were needed. While i try to test there was an index.html with a malicious script which had an iframe to this site's jar file. and kaspersky anti virus blocked it. So i browsed the ftp to find the file and i deleted it. and also disabled directory listing. May be the ftp details of the site owner would have been hacked. I want to report this site to google, msn and mozilla and other antivirus programs. How to do that. any idea? I hope kaspersky would have updated it in their database but still i want to explicitly inform it about this. here is the popup kaspersky showed.

    I've got a server with one site which I am redirecting to https via <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/secure ServerName secure.com Redirect / https://secure.com </VirtualHost> That works no problem. Now I'm trying to add another non-secure site <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/notsecure ServerName notsecure.com </VirtualHost> of course, because the redirect is on '/', all sites are getting redicted. I've tried changing the Redirect to the full document root, but no luck.

  • How to make Windows command prompt treat single quote as though it is a double quote?

    My scenario is simple - I am copying script samples from the Mercurial online book (at http://hGBook.red-bean.com) and pasting them in a Windows command prompt. The problem is that the samples in the book use single quoted strings. When a single quoted string is passed on the Windows command prompt, the latter does not recognize that everything between the single quotes belongs to one string. For example, the following command: hg commit -m 'Initial commit' cannot be pasted as is in a command prompt, because the latter treats 'Initial commit' as two strings - 'Initial and commit'. I have to edit the command after paste and it is annoying. Is it possible to instruct the Windows command prompt to treat single quotes similarly to the double one? EDIT Following the reply by JdeBP I have done a little research.     I'm trying to set up a Linux machine as the server and a Windows XP machine as the client. Both machines are connected to the same local network via a Wi-Fi router. I setup the stream with the following properties : http stream port 8080 play locally And not much else.     I'm running Apache 2.2.15-29 on RHEL 6 (actually Scientific Linux 6.4) and I'm trying to set up a reverse proxy with content rewriting so all of the links on the proxied web pages are rewritten to reference the proxy host. I'm running into a problem with some of the content rewriting and I'd like to know if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong (and how to do it right, if applicable). I'm proxying a subdirectory on an internal host (internal.example.com/foo) onto the root of an external host (external.example.com). I need to rewrite HTML, CSS, and Javascript content to fix all of the URLs. I'm also hosting some content locally on the external host, which I don't think is a problem but I'm mentioning here for completeness.   • Http Hanlder must be reset with each deployment. How can I add this functionality to the web.config

    My application is a dotnet 4 hybrid - MVC in some areas, web forms in others. This application was recently upgraded to dotnet 4 and includes a lot of older code and some mismatched parts. Unfortunately it includes a telerik component that requires me to run the Application pool in classic mode. In order to fix this (in IIS7) I have to add a handler mapping to the IIS configuration. This mapping is basically a wildcard mapping that points the wildcard path "*" to the %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll. The problem I am running into is this: For some reason this mapping gets dropped when deploying the site. So, can I add the functionality of this mapping to the web config? If so, How? Or is there another solution to make this manually added mapping "sticky" so that it remains in place during and after a deployment? (I am also asking this on StackOverflow, as I'm not sure if this should be a coding question or a Server question)

  • How many xml http requests is too much for a pc to handle?

    I'm running mediawiki on an apache on a regular pc running vista (don't know the specific specs, but I'm guessing at least duo core 2 2 giga hertz processor, broadband connection (500 kb/s at least, probably 1 mega). I want to use the MediaWiki api to send a lot of requests to this server. Most of the time the requests will be sent through LAN (but sometimes through the internet). I'm talking thousands of requests every few seconds at worst case. (A lot of these requests may repeat themselves, I guess some sort of cache would help) Will the server handle this, or do I need a stronger/dedicated computer? (I'm not looking for specific yes/no, but just want to get an idea as to what configuration of computer will support how many request per second) Thanks

  • CentOS 5: Can't access webserver via http from host OS?

    My server is installed on a guest OS on vmware. It really bugs me because I can't access it from the host OS's browser even though there is no discrepancy between /etc/hosts, /etc/sysconfig/network, httpd.conf files. Issuing ifconfig command also returns the same IP. I have also enabled netwroking in the vmware settings. And I can ping the guest OS's IP from the host. Any insights pls???

    I have an HTTP server running on 127.0.0.1:8000. How can I use iptables or something to route external traffic to it?     I have been trying to get to the bottom of this problem off and on for the past 2 days and I'm really stuck. Hopefully some smart folks can help me out. The issue is that I have a function that I call in a thread that downloads a file (using Synapse libraries) from a website that is passed to it. However, I've found that every once in a while there are sites where it will not pull down a file, but wget or Firefox/IE will download it without issue. Digging into it, I've found some curious things.   • SQL SERVER – Index Created on View not Used Often – Limitation of the View 12

    I have previously written on the subject SQL SERVER – The Limitations of the Views – Eleven and more…. This was indeed a very popular series and I had received lots of feedback on that topic. Today we are going to discuss something very interesting as well. During my recent performance tuning seminar in Hyderabad, I presented on the subject of Views. During the seminar, one of the attendees asked a question: We create a table and create a View on the top of it. On the same view, if we create Index, when querying View, will that index be used? The answer is NOT Always! (There is only one specific condition when it will be used. We will write about that later in the next post). Let us see the test case for the same.   • apt-get doesn't see packages in my trivial repository

    I've tried to set up a trivial repository with binary .debs for internal use, but apt-get doesn't see the packages. I've done the following: On the web server: Created the binary debs with dpkg-buildpackage Put all of the binary debs in a web-accessible directory which corresponds to http://www.example.com/packages Generated a Packages.gz file in the same directory by doing: dpkg-scansources . /dev/null | gzip -9c > Packages.gz On the client machine: Added the following line to my /etc/apt/sources.list file: deb http://www.example.com/packages / Ran: sudo apt-get update The output related to my trivial repository looked like this: Ign http://www.example.com Release.gpg Ign http://www.example.com/packages/ Translation-en_US Ign http://www.example.com Release Ign http://www.example.com Packages Ign http://www.example.com Packages Hit http://www.example.com Packages But I can't install the package by name. For example, there's a package called "python-nova" which corresponds to package python-nova_2011.3-custom~bzr680-0ubuntu1_all.deb I've tried to do: apt-get install python-nova, but I get the following error: $ sudo apt-get install python-nova Reading package lists...   • Yahoo sitemap validation

    Hello, I am trying to submit sitemap.xml (index) to Yahoo Site Explorer but with no luck. I tried using website feed option in the site explorer to submit the sitemap, but I got validation errors. However, when submitting the same sitemap to google webmaster tools, the sitemap was validated successfully. Could it be for the fact that I am using sitemap with image tag: <image:image> <image:loc>http://www.domain.com/pic.jpg</image:loc> <image:title>picture</image:title> </image:image> When I tried validating the sitemap with inline tools such as http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html and http://www.w3.org/2001/03/webdata/xsv the error I received was: Attempt to load a schema document from http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1 (source: new namespace) for http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1, failed: Not recognised as W3C XML Schema or RDDL: html However, the declaration of the sitemap I use in the top of the document is the same as suggested by Google on their official page at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=178636 : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:image="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1"> <url> Any ideas how to resolve this issue? This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. I use every script which I write on this blog, the matter of the fact, I write only those scripts here which I was using at that time. It is quite possible that as time passes by my needs are changing and I change my script. Here is the updated script of this subject. If there are any user data types, it will list the same as well.
