• How to pull a RANDOM and UNIQUE record from SQL via LINQ.

  Okay, I found lots of posts on SO about how to pull a RANDOM item from the database when using LINQ. There seems to be a couple of differnet ways to handle this. What I need to do though is pull a RANDOM item from the database that the user has not seen before. The data I am pulling from the database is very small. Is there any way I can just hit the database once for 1000 records and then randomly scroll through those? Should I put a cookie on the users system recording the IDs of which items they have seen, pull a random record, check to see if it is seen and if so, pull from the database again? That seems like performance issues just waiting to happen. I don't expect anyone to code it for me, I am just looking for concepts and pointing in the right direction of how I should go about this. Need more details? Just let me know!

• How would I strip an '&' symbol out of an ESRI dropdown before any of it's default control logic is

  I have an ESRI dropdown control inside of an ESRI toolbar. One of the items in the dropdown needs to have an '&' symbol in it. As it turns out ESRI stuff builds it's callback strings as & delimited strings, so when an item is selected the parent toolbar immediately builds and handles the callback string. At one point it splits strings based on the '&' crashing the app. In effect, having an ampersand in an esri dropdown causes nasty stuff to happen when you select the item. What I need to do is find out how I can hop in before the callback stuff starts happening and strip that & out. I was thinking that perhaps I'd have to create a custom esri toolbar control, but I'm not sure and that'd be pretty undesirable. Any ideas?

• Best way to insert items from a Derived class's constructor into a Base class's private std::vector?

  I have these classes: class Base { ... private: std::vector<X> v; }; class Derived { Derived(X*, int n); } where the constructor of Derived is passed an array of item Xs, which I need to insert into my vector v in the Base class. (X is a smart pointer) Currently I see two ways to do this: 1) Create a function in Base: InsertItem(X*) that will insert an item into the vector. 2) Create a vector in Derived that contains the full list, then get it into Base by moving the entire vector. I dont see any advantages to #2, but was wondering if #1 was a good solution, or if there are better ways to do this. Thanks!

  I need to be able to display and edit a hierarchical list of tasks in a C# app. It can either be a Windows form app, or ASP.NET. Basically, I want similar behaviour to the way Microsoft Project handles tasks. The control would need to: 1) Maintain a list of items made up of several fields 2) Each item can have a number of children (at least 3 levels of nesting) 3) It needs to be very easy to change the parents/children of an item 4) It needs to be very easy to edit the fields (as fast as changing cells in Excel) 5) It needs to be very easy to reorder the items by dragging and dropping or cut and paste 6) If I can easily connect the control to a database, even better Anyone got any recommendations for controls for me to look at?

• Is there a way to determine the Variance of an Interface / Delegate in C# 4.0?

  So now that we have generic Covariance and Contravariance on interfaces and delegates in C#, I was just curious if given a Type, you can figure out the covariance/contravariance of its generic arguments. I started trying to write my own implementation, which would look through all of the methods on a given type and see if the return types and or arguments match the types in the generic arguments. The problem is that even if I have this: public interface IFoo<T> { void DoSomething(T item); } using my logic, it LOOKS like it should be contravariant, but since we didn't actually specify: public interface IFoo<in T> { void DoSomething(T item); } (the in parameter) it isn't actually contravariant. Which leads to my question: Is there a way to determine the variance of generic parameters?

• Paging & Sorting grids with ASP.Net MVC

  I'm new to MVC, and am not following how you'd do paging and sorting on a grid. I'm used to using the asp.Net GridView control with an ObjectDataSource pointed at objects in our business layer - and in that case the ODS handles all of the paging & sorting using the methods that our ORM generates on the objects. I've looked at using the same ORM with MVC - and things work out fine there - i just loop thru the collections to build the table on the page - but without the ODS to handle the paging & sorting, i'm confused as to how I'd handle that. Would I have a separate controller for the paging and sorting? I'm not sure what the best practices are for this scenario, so if someone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. Edit: Ok, so I understand that I need to roll my own - but where do I start? I've created a CustomerController, and a view that displays a table of customers that looks like below - and I want to sort on FirstName or LastName columns. My Model has a Sort() method on it that'll take a string sort expression in the format that would be used by a GridView/ODS pair. I have three model relationed in this way: Project(some_fields, item_id) ------belongsTo----- Item(some_fields, item_id) ------belongsTo----- User(some_fields campi, nickname) I need to do a find() and retrieve all fields from project, a field from Item and the nickname field from User. This is my code: $this->set('projects', $this->Project->find('all', array('recursive' => 2))); but my output doesn't contains the user object. • Re-ordering collection C#

  Hi - I have a problem which I cant seem to find answer to through searches (either that or I am searching for the completely wrong thing!). I have a list of items called "Top 10" in a sortedlist item that is populated from my DB (SortedList where int is position and string is item). I want to be able to move items up & down the list order at the click of a button and then save the new order back to the DB. I am OK with the DB part it is just the re-ordering I am really struggling with - is a sortedlist the correct collection for this? Many thanks for any advice offered.

  We have an xml node "item" with an attribute "style", which is "Header1". This style can change however. We have an attribute set named Header1 which defines how this should look in a PDF, generated through xsl:fo. • saving values of editText in replaced fragment

  I have a 2 fragment layout, on the left fragment, i have a list of the different table names, on the right, i open up a different table depending on what is clicked on the right fragment. my intention, is that the first list item is clicked, then values will be entered on the table, next the second list item is clicked, the next table opens up and those values are entered. what would be the best way to store the values of the results entered in the editboxes, so i can process them all at once? I'm sure i can use onPause to save them all, but would that be the best way? Thanks

Some nodes will be good XML and will go into an XElement, however, some will not. In the CATCH, I'd like to now only catch the standard XmlException stuff... I'd also like to catch an extract of the current Xml and a string. However, if I do any kind of READ operation on the node before I pass it to the XElement, it moves the reader forward. How can get a "snapshot" of the contents of the OuterXml of the reader without interfering with it's position?

What is the best way to achieve this? I was hoping to do something simple in the SelectionChanged event handler for the listbox but the textbox controls are presumably out of the SelectionChanged event's scope. Do I have to programmatically traverse the control hierarchy and find the controls?

• Trying to figure out how to check a checksum

  I'm trying to figure out how to check a checksum. My message looks like this: 38 0A 01 12 78 96 FE 00 F0 FB D0 FE F6 F6 being the checksum. I convert the preceding 12 sets in to binary and then add them together. Then attempt a bitwise operation to apply the 2s complement. I get a value of -1562, but I can't convert it back to hex to check if the value is correct.   I have an ObervableCollection of data items. This collection is bound to a ListBox. When the user selects a item from the listbox and clicks the Edit button a UserControl with the details of that item is displayed with the various properties bound to text boxes. Each binding mode is set for TwoWay. On this details UserControl, I would like to implement 2 buttons, OK and Cancel. This would be consistent with UIs in Windows. This application is using the Model-View_ViewModel pattern. Here is my question: 1) How can I implement the Cancel button when all the changes have already been committed?
