  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - How do I use an Interface as the Type for a Strongly Typed View

    I'd like to keep my concrete classes separate from my views. Without using strongly typed views, I'm fine. I just use a big parameter list in the controller method signatures and then use my service layer factory methods to create my concrete objects. This is actually just fine with me, but it got me thinking and after a little playing, I realized it was literally impossible for a controller method to accept an interface as a method parameter - because it has no way of instantiating it. Can't create a strongly-typed view using an interface through the IDE either (which makes sense actually). So my question. Is there some way to tell the controller how to instantiate the interface parameter using my service layer factory methods?   • How can one use the "Add view" dialog in Visual Studio efficiently when working with ASP.NET MVC?

    Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me? Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation. Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries. Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that?? Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example) EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784 Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - How do I use DropDownListFor ?

    I have a simple model / view with things like Username, Password etc. and use helpers fine to hook it up. I now have a field called "NumberOfChildren". I want to store a number in it (int) and I want it render a dropdown box containing "None", "1", "2" etc. My thoughts would be that the model would have a list or a method that returns a list, so I can specify the values such as NumberOfChildren_List that I put the data into, and then DropDownListFor pulls that list and renders it, matching the value to the value of the item in the dropdown. However after spending about 30 minutes on trying to figure out how on earth it works, I gave up and decided to ask here. Any ideas? Edit: Here's some code... <%: Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.NumberOfChildren, new SelectList(Model.NumberOfChildrenListValues))%> and in the model [Required] [DisplayName("How many children do you have?")] public string NumberOfChildren { get; set; } public IEnumerable<string> NumberOfChildrenListValues { get { List<string> list = new List<string>() { "None", "1", "2" }; return list; } set { } } I get an object not set to instance of object error though.     Given a basic repository interface: public interface IPersonRepository { void AddPerson(Person person); List<Person> GetAllPeople(); } With a basic implementation: public class PersonRepository: IPersonRepository { public void AddPerson(Person person) { ObjectContext.AddObject(person); } public List<Person> GetAllPeople() { return ObjectSet.AsQueryable().ToList(); } } How can you unit test this in a meaningful way? Since it crosses the boundary and physically updates and reads from the database, thats not a unit test, its an integration test. Or is it wrong to want to unit test this in the first place? Should I only have integration tests on the repository? I've been googling the subject and blogs often say to make a stub that implements the IRepository: public class PersonRepositoryTestStub: IPersonRepository { private List<Person> people = new List<Person>(); public void AddPerson(Person person) { people.Add(person); } public List<Person> GetAllPeople() { return people; } } But that doesnt unit test PersonRepository, it tests the implementation of PersonRepositoryTestStub (not very helpful).

  • Ajax Auto Complete in ASP.Net MVC project - How to display a an object's name but actually save it's

    I have implemented the Ajax Autocomplete feature in my application using a web service file that querys my database and it works great. One problem I am having is allowing the user to see the item's name, as that's what they are typing in the textbox, but when they select it, it saves the item's ID number instead of the actual name. I want it to behave much like a dropdown list, where I can specify what is seen and entered vs. what is actually saved in the database (in this case, the product ID instead of it's name.)     Hi, I'm trying to solve the problem: when a user is being logged into a WebSite (via user control .ascx stored on the Master Page), it's name is being stored in a Page.User.Identity.Name property. OK, but how to retrieve that user name in the controller ? Is it possible without registering System.Security.Principal namespace in the controller ? In the other words - the controller must know whose user wants to do some action (e.g. change account data). I could store it's name in the Html.Hidden control on each View but I don't want to have a mess in my Views

    In my application, an authorized user will Register a new customer and set their username and password, etc. The customer will not be registering them self.   • invasive vs non-invasive ref-counted pointers in C++

    For the past few years, I've generally accepted that if I am going to use ref-counted smart pointers invasive smart pointers is the way to go -- However, I'm starting to like non-invasive smart pointers due to the following: I only use smart pointers (so no Foo* lying around, only Ptr) I'm starting to build custom allocators for each class. (So Foo would overload operator new). Now, if Foo has a list of all Ptr (as it easily can with non-invasive smart pointers). Then, I can avoid memory fragmentation issues since class Foo move the objects around (and just update the corresponding Ptr). The only reason why this Foo moving objects around in non-invasive smart pointers being easier than invasive smart pointers is: In non-invasive smart pointers, there is only one pointer that points to each Foo. In invasive smart pointers, I have no idea how many objects point to each Foo. Now, the only cost of non-invasive smart pointers ... is the double indirection. [Perhaps this screws up the caches]. Does anyone have a good study of expensive this extra layer of indirection is?

  • How to handle checkboxes in ASP.NET MVC forms?

    This seems a bit bizarre to me, but as far as I can tell, this is how you do it. I have a collection of objects, and I want users to select one or more of them. This says to me "form with checkboxes." My objects don't have any concept of "selected" (they're rudimentary POCO's formed by deserializing a wcf call). So, I do the following: public class SampleObject{ public Guid Id {get;set;} public string Name {get;set;} } In the view: <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <%foreach (var o in ViewData.Model) {%> <%=Html.CheckBox(o.Id)%>&nbsp;<%= o.Name %> <%}%> <input type="submit" value="Submit" /> <%}%> And, in the controller, this is the only way I can see to figure out what objects the user checked: public ActionResult ThisLooksWeird(FormCollection result) { var winnars = from x in result.AllKeys where result[x] != "false" select x; // yadda } Its freaky in the first place, and secondly, for those items the user checked, the FormCollection lists its value as "true false" rather than just true. Obviously, I'm missing something. I think this is built with the idea in mind that the objects in the collection that are acted upon within the html form are updated using UpdateModel() or through a ModelBinder. But my objects aren't set up for this; does that mean that this is the only way? Is there another way to do it?

Is it done in the repository where I fetch the data or in the View? For the Active column I want to show a checkBox that will AutoPostBack on selection change and update the Active filed in the Database. How is this done without Ajax or jQuery?

  • Quick methodology to show client a working demo

    I am not starting an argumentative discussion here and this post is not about career development, but from the commercial point of view: If a company was using ASP.Net MVC as a main methodology to build their web sites and application. However, ASP.Net MVC takes more time to show a functional application than ASP.Net Web Forms, for example, building domain models would take some time which obviously can't be represented on a UI at that current stage. My question is, if a client wants to see a functional demo application (just a proof of concept) so he knows that the company he is dealing with is professional and capable of doing that. Would it be better to do that demo in ASP.Net Web Forms only to show the client, and then work on the real application using ASP.Net MVC? If not, what are the (quick) alternatives?, I mean, if we tell the client to wait till we have a working demo (by ASP.Net MVC) we may lose the client and the whole project opportunity.

    How can I intercept submitted form input and modify it before it is bound to my model? For example, if I wanted to trim the whitespace from all text.   • Does php mvc framework agavi use CRUD compliant to REST?

    The agavi framework uses the PUT request for create and POST for updating information. Usually in REST this is used the other way around (often referring to POST adding information while PUT replacing the whole data record). If I understand it correctly, the important issue is that PUT must be idempotent, while POST does not have this requirement. Therefore, I wounder how creating a new record can be idempotent (i.e. multiple request do not lead to multiple creations of a record) in particular when usually the ORM uses an id as a primary key and the id of a new record would not be known to the client (since it is autocreated in the database), hence cannot be part of the request. How does agavi maintain the requirement of idempotence in light of this for the PUT request. Thanks.

    I'm building ASP.NET MVC2 website that lets users store and analyze data about goods found on various online trade sites. When user is filling a form to create or edit an item, he should have a button "Import data" that automatically fills some fields based on data from third party website. The question is: what should this button do under the hood? I see at least 2 possible solutions. First. Do the import on client side using AJAX+jQuery load method. I tried it in IE8 and received browser warning popup about insecure script actions. Of course, it is completely unacceptable. Second. Add method ImportData(string URL) to ItemController class. It is called via AJAX, does the import + data processing server-side and returns JSON-d result to client. I tried it and received server exception (503) Server unavailable when loading HTML data into XMLDocument. Also I have a feeling that dealing with not well-formed HTML (missing closing tags, etc.) will be a huge pain. Any ideas how to parse such HTML documents?

    I'm creating a new project, asp.net mvc3 with Razor, and wanting to turn the LogOn into an ajax request. HTML @using (Ajax.BeginForm("LogOn", "Account", new AjaxOptions { HttpMethod="post", OnSuccess="LoginSubmitted"})) { } Controller if (Request.IsAjaxRequest()) { return Json(new { ResultMessage = "Username or password provided is incorrect"}); } else { ModelState.AddModelError("", "The user name or password provided is incorrect."); } Everything else remains the same. First, looking at the the http response with Fiddler, I notice there is no x-requested-with header. So I add <input type="hidden" name="X-Requested-With" value="XMLHttpRequest" /> That seems to work, but now what I receive back is a Json object, which isn't being parsed and instead Google Chrome is just rendering the Json to screen. Whats happening?
