• How to register a new domain name on a windows based domain controller?

  Is there an easy and quick way I can create a new subdomain on a windows based domain controller. My primary domain controller is also my primary DNS server on my network. I want to create a subdomain and have its ip directed to that of my IIS server. Thanks in advance... Sorry if my terminology is somewhat lacking... My domain is companyName.com What I want to do is create auditingResults.companyName.com... and have it route to 192.168.1.3 for example..... where on 1.3 I will have an IIS server presetup. Please feel free to leave comments to correct my terminology if required....

• after install python 2.7.3 yum is broken

  i installed libxml2-2.9.0 and libxslt-1.1.27 then yum is broken any yum command that i ran i got the result of : There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. • Ubuntu 10.04 problems - GVIM and Sound

  Hey Guys ! Well, i have 2 problems .. not exactly problems, but one is a question, and the other is a problem . QUESTION I have installed gVim on my laptop and now i want to install plugins and customize my vimrc . Where is the 'plugin' , 'color' , 'docs' directory located in order for me to drop those files in ? And where do i need to put the .vimrc file for gVim to be able to recogonize it ? PROBLEM Sound isn't working. I dont know whats the problem @ all. It just doesnt play . And NO its not on mute. i Checked. If any other input is required from the terminal , please ask for it. • Macbook superdrive got calibration problems

  I have an intel macbook dual 2Ghz, bought about three years ago. I've had some problems with the superdrive and changed it a year and a half ago. the drive is Matshita DVD-R UJ 857 now I'm into burning cd's again and try to burn a DVD with Toast Titanium from an .iso on my hard drive But it won't work. When I launch the burn, the disc suddenly stops turning, and an error log pops: medium error, sense code = 0x73, 0x03 then I try with the built in cd burner of the macbook as soon as I click burn, the cd stops turning in the drive, and error log says peripheral couldn't calibrate power of the laser required for medium so since I'm not that logical of a geek, I try my first idea: let's see with other brands of DVD! the problem is that it works, now. but I'd like for all of my medium to be usable, and I've already seen my ridata DVD being burn, so here's the question. What the hell is happening with my superdrive? :)

• Cannot connect to FTP server from external host

  I have a FTP server (vsftpd) setuped on a Linux box (Ubuntu server). When I try to connect with a computer on the same network everything works fine as expected. But as soon the IP is external it won't connect.. I first assumed the port was blocked, but then: localserver:$ sudo tail -f /var/log/vsftpd.log Wed Jan 13 14:21:17 2010 [pid 2407] CONNECT: Client "xxx.xxx.107.4" remotemachine:$ netcat svn-motion.no-ip.biz 21 220 FTP Server And it hangs there .. Is there any other ports other than 21 that are required to be open ?

• Microsoft CALs for Domain Controller

  I am designing a network and I've come to the point of specifying out the number of CALs required for this network. Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me. I plan to have 1 2008 std domain controller, another 2008 server (not a domain controller) and 200 Windows 7 devices connected to the domain for domain services. The 200 W7 devices will all authenticate to the domain controller with the same domain account. (this is a special type of network, not a user workstation network) Therefore, do I need to purchase 200 CALS for the 200 devices, or can I purchase say 10 CALS (user CALS) as the amount of unique user accounts is very low.   Since a few days, I get the following error on my server: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 262144) (tried to allocate 393216 bytes) Usually this error is due to a memory consumption that is exceeding the configured memory_limit, but in my case there is no relation. The memory_limit is set to 128MB, and in this case, we not even reach 1MB. Also the server does not have a big load, in fact it is an intranet server, and there are just a few people conected to it. System: Windows Server 2003, 1Go RAM, only 600 MB used. Apache 2.2.4 PHP 5.2.3 This error is appearing randomly. The memory limit reached also is randomly between a few kB to a few MB. Sometimes restarting Apache is required to get rid of the error, sometimes it disapears itself. Restarting Apache or the entire server helps temporarily. Where could this problem come from ? How could I narrow down the error source ?

• YUM and RPM crash due to the liblua-5.1 library being missing

  I've been playing around with a LiveUsb install of basic Fedora with persistence. I attempted to install moonscript, which requires Lua and LuaRocks. After installing Lua and discovering there were flaws in the install which prevented LuaRocks from working, I used rpm to force Lua off so I could use yum to re-install it. The result was an error of this sort being yielded by both rpm and yum: There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: liblua-5.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've concluded from this that my Lua version installed a library which both yum and rpm are now connected to. Is there anyway to fix this without reformatting my drive and installing everything from scratch?

• Windows Server (2012) ASP.NET

  I honestly don't even know where to start.. I created a Windows Server 2012 (Azure) VM, inside of VM I THOUGHT I did everything whatever is required to run ASP.NET application.. BUT that wasn't a case. I'm stuck and unable to run a simple ASP.NET app HelloWorld( and I blame Microsoft! I had everything running before they decided to wipe out my VM so that's why I'm redoing that VM. What can I do to resolve this? Where should I look? • unable to connect to remote sql server from SHDSL router

  Got a new leased line network to our office that came with a SHDSL router (Watson). Currently, we are unable to use Sql Server management studio to connect to remote Sql databases. It errors out saying A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 64) I logged into the Watson management panel and unblocked all the ports for TCP traffic (specified the range as 0 to 60000 and UDP as well - this include 1443 required for connecting to SQL Server). The router is the only thing that has changed. We are able to connect to it from other networks just fine. Is there something we are missing here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I regularly write and update technical documentation which will be used to set up a new virtual machine, or to have a lookup for system dependencies in networks with around 20-50 (server-side) computers. At the moment I use OpenOffice Writer with text tables, and create one document per intranet domain. To improve this documentation, I would like to collect some examples to identify areas where my documents can be improved, regarding general structure and content, to make it easy to read and use not only for me but also for technical staff, helpdesk etc. Are there simple text templates (for example for OpenOffice Writer) or tools (maybe database-driven) for structured documentation of a computer configuration? Such a template / tool should provide required and optional configuration sections, like 'operating system', 'installed services', 'mapped network drives', 'scheduled tasks', 'remote servers', 'logon user account', 'firewall settings', 'hard disk size' ... It is not so much low-level hardware docs but more infrastructure / integration information in these documents (no BIOS settings, MAC addresses).

• -ssadd is invalid when setting up Sessions on SQL Server 2005

  I have a dev and QA environment with SQL 2005 EE on dev and SQL 2000 on QA. On QA I run aspnet_regsql –ssadd –sstype t -E in command line and it works fine. I run the same command on dev and it returns "'-ssadd' is invalid". The working directory for both is C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727. I found some info on MSDN that said that SQL Express Edit. required a script to run before -ssadd will work, but this script didn't help me. I'm not sure where to go from here.

• Weird RAM Upgrade Experience

  I have a laptop, HP EliteBook 8540p having originally 4GB RAM and I've recently bought Corsair Value Select SO-DIMM 16 Go (2x 8 Go) DDR3 1333 MHz. It fits the required RAM specifications perfectly, and once I've inserted them, the BIOS recognizes the memory correctly, but my linux Gentoo running on kernel 3.1.6 SMP x86_64 crashes immediately when I'm running an app which consumes a lot of memory. The laptop crashes as if there's no more battery left, when the memory reaches at least 6000MB ram. Windows 7 doesn't want to run anymore, it shows a blue screen with the IRQ LESS OR EQUAL error if I set 8GB, and it doesn't boot at all if I set 16GB. Is there something I could do to fix this please ?

  I added the Dreamhost's nameservers like 12 hours ago to: I entered to the following panel: Nameservers -> Set Nameservers (I have specific nameservers for my domains) and added Dreamhost's nameservers liek this: Nameserver 1: NS1.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 2: NS2.DREAMHOST.COM Nameserver 3: NS3.DREAMHOST.COM So now in the admin panel I see this: Nameservers Nameservers: (Last Update 2/10/2011) NS1.DREAMHOST.COM NS2.DREAMHOST.COM NS3.DREAMHOST.COM But I get this when I run the analysis tools: Attention Required! There are critical issues Accessing Your Web Site Accessing Your Web Site Properly configuring your domain name and hosting account ensures that visitors can access your site. Did I do something wrong or I have to wait 24 to 48 hours? (Dreamhost does display my page because I can access the other domain name I bought together with the hosting) (By the way, if everyone uses the same nameserver, how will go GoDaddy know which is the hosting space that I purchased among all others)?   One fast question: if I buy an iPad 3G in Europe will it work on other places without jailbreak? I ask this because I heard that, in Europe, iPads are not blocked to any telecom but I am not sure about that. On the other hand I am afraid do buy because I know that their cousins, iphones, are blocked to a specific telecom. Another question is regarding activation. As far as I remembered, my iPhone required me to do an activation step on iTunes and I remember it was also activated (or whatever) on the store (I remembered the salesman connected it to a computer and did some stuff before giving me the device). Is the iPad in europe totally free of operator? totally unblocked? thanks.

  We are currently running Unix dedicated servers for everything (Web cluster, database, FTP, batch, ...) except for a Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services. The sole purpose of this Windows box is to provide client side certificates to our clients browsers. All our clients are required to install a client side certificate on order for them to be able to access our website. Is there an alternative in the Unix space? The purpose is to make sure only the approved hardware of an approved client can access our website. I'm open for any solution that provides me with this level of security. We are however talking about thousands of certified computers just so you can factor that in in a proposed solution. Optionally we would also like to be able to revoke access. With Regards.

  I am trying to provide taskpads to few admins to operate on few tasks delegated to them at OU level.I ran into the following problem; lets say i delegated access to the admin on OU X and which is ability to modify groups such as sample group X1 , he must be able to add any users from OU X to the group X1. The issue here is while testing i found out the admin can do the above but also can add a user Y1 from the OU Y(which he doesnt have delegated permissions) to the group X1.What am i missing? how to restrict admin from adding users out of OU to the groups he has modify access to? Please ask me if any more details/clarification required.

  I'm trying to use xvpviewer (based on TightVNC) to VNC into my VMs running on Citirx XenServer. There are a couple of caveats required with trusting the certificate from XenServer which I've got working. • Ubuntu from console/command-line/shell

  Earlies linux distros though required lot of manual work they were quite good to use from commandline. If the X-server didn't start or you just want a shell to work they all supported. Network was configured by init; sound was up and ready; new devices inserted would be configured and their configureation was placed in fstab. Also there were small scripts I found on many distros which on X used windows while on console they switched to ncurses. But now this all needs GUI with a desktop manager (KDE, GNOME) for the new paradigms :'-( require GUI (NetworkManger, hal etc.). So if on just command line you have to be root, looks like they believe only geeky admins need that, and need to edit config files or type big commands. Any way so that this is easy in Ubnubtu through shell again.

• Can I use CAT 6a connectors with 7a cable (and get 6a performance)?

  I'm re-wiring a building and want to get the best cable possible laid - it required re-plastering to make a change to the cables and the cables will be there for the next 10 - 20 years. Currently there appears to be cat 7a cable available but not too much in the way of cat 7a connectors. Also - I won't be using 40Gig hardware in the near future. So, my question: is it possible to use cat 6a connectors / patch panels with cat 7a cable and get the same performance as I would had I used cat 6a cable? Are there any gotchas in trying to do this?

• Using VLC to Unicast High Definition Webcam over local gigabit LAN with low/zero delay

  We're setting up a webcam "window" between two offices in the same buildilng. The two PC's are connected to the same gigabit switch. We're using VLC to stream the webcam over HTTP using the following commands. vlc dshow:// :dshow-caching="0" :dshow-size="640x480" :sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=0,scale=0}:http{mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=:8080/} :no-sout-rtp-sap :no-sout-standard-sap :ttl=1 :sout-keep vlc http://192.168.0.1:8080 :http-caching="0" Even with the caching set to zero, the delay in the image is a good 2-3 seconds. The CPU usage of each pc is also maxed. I'm guessing it's the transcoding that's causing much of the delay. Can anyone give me some changes to these command lines that will reduce the transcoding power, or send the webcam over a different protocol, or anything that will reduce the delay of the cameras? Bandwidth is not an issue at all as the pc's can be connected to a dedicated switch/vlan if required.

• Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 - does 32/64 depend on RAM?

  Just got in a Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 (Xeon E3-1225V1) and a (new, sealed, holographed, looks legit) copy of Windows Server 2008 32/64 (standard) to run on it for a pretty lightweight job (currently handled, adequately, by a terrifyingly old Optima P4 running Windows 2000 server - really lightweight, but long-past-due for replacement, without any particular need or excuse for server 2012...) The 64 bit disc sits there and does nothing. The 32 bit disc boots. I haven't spotted any mention of this in the TS130 Manual (I have now combed it, and find no mention of a need to populate in pairs - a preferred order to populate in, yes, but no mention of pairs being required) but I begin to wonder if it's due to the fact that the 4GB RAM suppled with it was a single DIMM, rather than a pair. Better for upgrading, but perhaps requiring an upgrade (or sidegrade) right away to install the x64 version?? Anyone know? I tried the 64-bit DVD on a desktop with an AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor which normally runs Windows7 in 64 bit, and it booted up just fine.
