  • How do you use the C language to produce a ruby gem?

    - by DJTripleThreat
I would like to see some source code or maybe a link to some that gives at least a stub for writing ruby gems in the C languages (C++?? is that possible too?) Also, some of you may know that Facebook compiles some of their code natively as php extensions for better performance. Is anyone doing this in Rails? If so, what has been your experience with it? Have you found it to be useful? Thanks. Edit: I guess I'll answer my own question with some stuff I learned today but I'm going to leave the question open for another answer because I'd like to see what others have to say on this topic

  • Can you recommend an in-browser Ruby/Rails 3D renderer?

    - by mohawkjohn
I want to draw some 3D network diagrams in a web browser, and the data for these diagrams are in a Rails app (in the database). I already use flotomatic as a Rails interface for pretty Javascript plots (e.g., independent variable, dependent variable). Certainly there are packages for drawing simple things in Javascript. What I'm looking for is (a) a Javascript package for 3D drawings that are displayed in a web browser (without a plugin), and (b) a Ruby API for that package, if possible. Any recommendations? Many thanks!

  • How do I inherit abstract unit tests in Ruby?

    - by Graeme Moss
I have two unit tests that should share a lot of common tests with slightly different setup methods. If I write something like class Abstract < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @field = create end def test_1 ... end end class Concrete1 < Abstract def create SomeClass1.new end end class Concrete2 < Abstract def create SomeClass2.new end end then Concrete1 does not seem to inherit the tests from Abstract. Or at least I cannot get them to run in eclipse. If I choose "Run all TestCases" for the file that contains Concrete1 then Abstract is run even though I do not want it to be. If I specify Concrete1 then it does not run any tests at all! If I specify test_1 in Concrete1 then it complains it cannot find it ("uncaught throw :invalid_test (ArgumentError)"). I'm new to Ruby. What am I missing here?

  • How did this Ruby on Rails app get deployed?

    - by Ciera
I have a Ruby on Rails app running on my server, and I can't figure out how it was deployed (someone else set it up). The app is located in /var/www/myapp. Before it was deployed, I had been able to go in there and make minor edits to the app. The person helping me out with RoR then "deployed" it. It was unclear what deploying actually did, since it points to the same database and is on the same server. However, I can no longer edit it (or at least, the files I am editing are not being pointed to by the server). Any way to figure out how this thing was deployed so I can take it down to edit it? Or should I basically just start over?

  • How can I remove Ruby, Rails & mysql to start the installation process again?

    - by ben
I've been trying to get setup with Ruby on Rails today, but I think I've followed some bad instructions along the way, and nothing seems to work. I've now borrowed the book "Agile Web Development with Rails, Third Edition" from a friend, and want to follow the setup instructions in that. Firstly, do I need to remove what I've setup previously? If yes, how do I do it? I can't seem to find instructions anywhere. I'm running OSX 10.6.1, so I know that it came with some stuff already setup, but I've been installing customized stuff over the top which I think I'll have to remove. Thanks for reading!

  • 45minute video on introduction to Windows Azure and running Ruby on Rails in the cloud

    - by Eric Nelson
Last week I presented at Cloud and Grid Exchange 2010. I did an introduction to Windows Azure and a demo of Ruby on Rails running on Azure. My slides and links can be found here – but just spotted that the excellent Skills Matter folks have already published the video. Watch the video at http://skillsmatter.com/podcast/cloud-grid/looking-at-the-clouds-through-dirty-windows  P.S. I really need to shed a few pounds!

  • Ruby Script Runner for Ubuntu Gedit

    - by Ygam
I have this Java script runner installed in my gedit external tools: #!/bin/sh cd $GEDIT_CURRENT_DOCUMENT_DIR if javac $GEDIT_CURRENT_DOCUMENT_NAME; then java ${GEDIT_CURRENT_DOCUMENT_NAME%\.java} else echo "Failed to compile" fi I tried modifying to it to something like this #!/bin/sh cd $GEDIT_CURRENT_DOCUMENT_DIR ruby ${GEDIT_CURRENT_DOCUMENT_NAME%\.rb} but it doesn't work. I may have missed something, I don't know what because I don't do bash scripting. Hehe

  • UITextView w/ Syntax Highlighting

    - by Travis
Is there a common library, parser, etc. for Cocoa or Cocoa-Touch that can take a chunk of text and do the proper syntax highlighting? As a simple example, I'd like to have a UITextView that has C/C++ syntax highlighting.

UITableView, UInavigation etc.? I am running xcode 3.1.3. Thanks!

  • use AMF instead of JSON on iPhone?

    - by Henry
Although iPhone support JSON natively, AMF is a binary protocol and it supposes to use much less bandwidth. Do you think using AMF is a good idea? Just found this AMF library in cocoa (Objective-C): http://github.com/nesium/cocoa-amf/

  • How to set header and footer in print layout

    - by Miraaj
I have a very simple requirement: I want to show a header and footer in print layout of a view. One approach I can use is to manipulate the height of the page and display some text fields at appropriate positions as header and footer, but I think there must be smarter way to do this in cocoa. Can any one tell me- is there any default method to achieve this in cocoa or some smarter way to do this?

  • Key Window for background application

    - by jpoz
Dear Cocoa Developers, I'm creating a backgrounded cocoa application. The only thing that it's missing is the ability to take text inputs! I'm making the application backgrounded by setting "Application is background only" in the Info.plist But no matter what I do I can't make any window the keyWindow. makeKeyWindow makeKeyAndOrderFront Both don't work... I know apps can do this, anyone have any idea how you can get background application to have a key window? Thanks, JPoz

  • /sbin/getty process causing 100% CPU utilization

    - by scrrr
I have an instance of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-25-virtual i686) running as a KVM-VM on a host-machine that runs one more VM beside it. I deploy a Ruby on Rails application using the Capistrano deployment-gem. However, if I deploy twice in a row in a short time, the CPU usage jumps to 100% because of the /sbin/getty process. How can this be? I believe getty is a rather simple program that passes a login-name from a terminal to a login-process. Also: In my Capfile (Capistrano configuration file) I am running certain commands after the Rails application is deployed including a call to sudo /sbin/restart <APPNAME> which is an upstart task. Could this be related somehow? I can always kill the getty process and the problem is gone until the next deployment, but I would rather understand and fix the problem. Any help is appreciated. Attached is a screenshot of my problem.

  • Catering for client's web-hosting needs, minus the headaches ?

    - by julien
I'll be trying to sell my Ruby on Rails development skills to small local businesses. It seems I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I couldn't manage to put their apps into production, in fact catering for this would be a selling point. However, I do not want to bill every client monthly for the cost of their hosting, they would have to be the contract holders with the hosting service, and I'd only consult if they needed technical help when scaling. I've looked on one hand at cloud platforms, like engine yard, which seem like they would be too costly for the smaller clients, and on the other hand at vps providers which seem they would not be client friendly enough. Has anyone faced the same issue and come up with a decent solution ?

  • Rails Easy Data Dumping

    - by Madhan ayyasamy
    Hi Friends,The following useful snippets,you can find out the easiest way of ruby on rails environment data dumping. You’ll often need to get data from production to dev or dev to your local or your local to another developer’s local. One plug-in we use over and over is Yaml_db. This nifty little plug-in enables you to dump or load data by issuing a Rake command. The data is persisted in a yaml file located in db/data.yml. This is very portable and easy to read if you need to examine the data.01rake db:data:dump02 03example data found in db/data.yml04 05---06campaigns:07  columns:08  - id09  - client_id10  - name11  - created_at12  - updated_at13  - token14  records:15  - - "1"16    - "1"17    - First push18    - 2008-11-03 18:23:5319    - 2008-11-03 18:23:5320    - 3f2523f6a66521  - - "2"22    - "2"23    - First push24    - 2008-11-03 18:26:5725    - 2008-11-03 18:26:5726    - 9ee8bc427d94

  • Text Editor with SSH/Terminal/FTP/Putty combo for develeping in Rails on Windows

    - by Panoy
I plan to learn Ruby on Rails and would like to code in my development box which runs on Windows XP. I have Ubuntu Server (forgot the version ;p) running as my web server with Rails installed on it. I have been considering using Vim as my text editor of choice in XP but would like to know any text editor and accompanying shell/FTP/Putty/SSH (or whatever you may call it) program that can access those files in my Ubuntu server. It is better if the shell can be called or is bundled inside the text editor. I would like to know your combinations (text editor + shell) and your experiences on it when you were able to develop your Rails projects on that combination. Cheers!
