  I formatted all the partitions in my computer to a single ext4 partition and did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 13.04. I'm getting: Failed to execute /init Kernel panic - not syncing: no init found. Try passing init=option to kernel. Even on clean reinstall the issue persist. Booting from recovery mode leads to same error, so not able to reach the terminal. But able to boot from Live CD. Any help much appreciated.

• Ask temperature on ubuntu 11.10 too hot

  I wonder why when I am using Ubuntu, my laptop temperature increases. It's around 62 degrees or less. I am already using Jupiter and have set it to power saving mode but if I use maximum performance the temperature can reach 70 degrees or more. Its too hot if I compare it when I am running windows where the temperature is quite normal at 56 degrees. How can I solve that?, sorry for my bad English.

• suspend error on 14.04 LTS

  I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed. System details: This is a clean freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit Laptop Dell D630 kernel 3.13.0-34-generic

• Battery died when updating from 12.04 to 12.10

  I started the update and went to sleep but I forgot to plugin AC adapter. When i woke up, laptop was off. I plugged in the AC cord and turned it on. Ubuntu boots and it is on 12.10 but may items are missing and neither gnome nor unity seem to work properly. It's also very slow and freezes sometimes. Is there a way to correct all those issues ? or revert back to 12.04 then re update to 12.10 without losing my data ?

  Installed Ubuntu over a Windows8 trial. After installation, Windows8 still tries to boot. Wiped disk clean with Acronis and reinstall Ubuntu. Windows8 still tries to start, but goes to blank screen. Ubuntu never tries to boot. Naturally live mode works fine. What do you think of wiping disk again, install Windows7 and try using GRUB approach or do you know how to remove Windows from the cleaned disk?

  I used to have button in my file viewer window that allowed me to easily change from list to compact to icons, which was really convenient. Now, in 12.04 (running gnome fallback mode to mostly keep my original layout) I don't have that anymore, I have to go to 'view' and then at the bottom of the menu choose the way I want to display the files. Any way to get this switcher back? In its place I just have a search function and buttons that I don't need and never use.

• Wireless mouse temporarily freezes when resume from standby

  I have been getting a very annoying problem since recently in Ubuntu 12.04, probably due to another update that did more bad than good... When I resume from sleep on my Lenovo Thinkpad T420, my wireless laser mouse (Logitech M705) freezes at regular intervals (15.20 seconds) for 5 seconds then works again. This happens regardless if the computer is on battery or on AC power. How do I debug this? I am getting tired of the fact that my system gets more and more unstable over time while it should be the opposite...

  for the longest time after about 5 minutes my screen would blank out. Now the screen will go blank after 5 minutes but then 2 seconds after that it will light up white and keep the laptop backlighting on. I didnt change any settings to my knowledge it just happened randomly after powering it on one day and has occurred since then. I wish to resort back to blanking the screen out completely since i leave this computer on all the time and its hard to sleep with a huge white light all the time.   I've recently developed a huge interest in cryptography, and I'm exploring some of the weaknesses of ECB-mode block ciphers. A common attack scenario involves encrypted cookies, whose fields can be represented as (relatively) short hex strings. Up until now, I've relied on my eyes to pick out repeating blocks, but this is rather tedious. I'm wondering what kind of algorithms (if any) could help me automate my search for repeating patterns within a string. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

• Ubuntu 12.04 VM goes dead unexpectedly

  I'm not a super savvy super user, so I'm not sure what to look for. I have a vm running 12.04. It runs fine, and then just dies (no ping, no ssh). When I log into vmwaresphere, I see the vm still 'UP', but the console gives me a response-less black screen. This lead me to believe that Ubuntu was going into some sort of sleep/hibernate state. I double checked the power settings and found nothing out of the ordinary, so now I'm stuck on how to fix the problem. There are 5-7 (centos-5.8 & 6) machines running on the same server/vm setup with no problems at all. thanks.

• 'mount: error while loading shared libraries: libudev.so.0 : no such file or directory' error while booting

  I was trying to load a version of CGminer which was returning a libudev type error, and followed a supposed solution here but it destroyed my system (so it seems). I loaded the system in recovery mode from GRUB but all that done was actually tell me what I something is broken, do not know what to do next. I think I somehow associated a libudev.so.0 to 1 or 1 to 0, I am not sure what I did and how to fix it.

  I tryied to set the JAVA_HOME environmet variable in the ~/.profile file and I made a mistake JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_37" PATH=$JAVA_HOME:PATH the error is in the PATH referencing. I put PATH rather than $PATH. this prevents me from login. I tried to edit the file using the recovery mode but it says that the file system is read only. so any suggestions how to deal with this issue. thanks

  We had a 3-drive Windows Server 2008 R2 RAID-5 fail (operating in redundancy mode): WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB We removed the failed hard drive, and put a WDC 1 TB drive (that we had standing by) into the machine. When launched, Disk Manager, asked permission to "initialize" the disk as either: Master Boot Record (MBR) Guid Partition Table (GPT) We initialized the disk as GPT, converted it to dynamic, and tried to use the Repair Volume command - except it was greyed out. (which is a terrifying thing on a failed production server hosting 3 virtual servers) i tried from the diskpart command line tool. First we look for our RAID-5 volume that is in Failed Rd mode: DISKPART> list volume Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- -------- Volume 0 E VMs (Raid5) NTFS RAID-5 1863 GB Failed Rd Volume 1 D DVD-ROM 0 B No Media Volume 2 System Rese NTFS Partition 100 MB Healthy System Volume 3 C NTFS Partition 1862 GB Healthy Boot There, Volume 0. • MultiView 2000 terminal emulator not printing correctly to Generic/Text Printer on Windows 7

  Guys & gals, Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix? Remote OS: AIX 5 Client OS: Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) Printer: Generic/Text on a FILE port TE Software: MultiView 2000 (320-bit) Thanks in advance.
