  I cannot help but think that this is currently wrong.  There are two editions of StreamInsight (SI), Premium and Standard.  A link to their differences is here Points to note Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition represent Enterprise Edition in SQL Server but not SI where they represent Datacentre Edition.  Won’t this be confusing when people evaluating SI find that it is not the same animal when they move to Enterprise Edition? If SI Premium is the only thing you want out of the SQL Server box then it is going to be a high cost. The latency rates as well quoted on the site above make Premium Edition essential if you are going to be using this to do Real-Time analytics.

• Open Source Shopping Cart Software

  Ive come into a bit of an issue lately regarding shopping cart software, and i would like some recommendations. I have been an OsCommerce developer for years now, and im finding alot of my clients are wanting updated looking backends ... OSC is fantastic, but the fact that its not being updated anymore and that its clunky and table based is taking up quite a bit of my time. I have built a few sites on Magento, and although it gives quite a good backend, it is the slowest shopping cart i have ever come across in my time, that and the fact that modifying it takes years, has convinced me not to use that again. So, i like any input as to what people are finding good in todays open source shopping cart software.

My company is moving more and more to SharePoint and I feel I need to learn to build application within the SharePoint system. I have some brief introduction to C# but that's about it. I've used some SharePoint Designer and the web interface but not that heavily (most of my "development" so far for SharePoint has been html/css/javascript page manipulation in SPDesigner). What, and in what order should I be learning to eventually develop applications for SharePoint? Also, any good resources for each step?

• Why does a computer science degree matter to a professional programmer?

  I have a degree in computer science. It has been great for opening doors, getting a job. As far as helping me in the professional field of C# .NET programming (the most popular platform and language in the area I work if not the entire united states on hands down the most popular OS in the world) its hardly useful. Why do you think it helps you as a programmer in your professional career (outside spouting off to prims algorithm to impress some interviewer)? In today's world adaptation, a quick mind, strong communication, OO and fundamental design skills enable a developer to write software that a customer will accept. These skills are only skimmed over in the cs program. In my mind, reading a 500 page C# book by Wrox offers far more useable a skillset than 4 years of the comp sci math blaster courses. Many disagree. So, why does a computer science degree matter?

• Fastest way to run a JSON server on my local machine

  I am a front-end developer. For many experiemnets I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. Is there any framework (on any language) that do stuff like this for me?

• Who does code coverage testing?

  Recently, I was given an opportunity to increase the code coverage in a project based on Java Swing, MySQL and other technologies. They told me to bring the code coverage to 100%, while it was only 45% at the time I joined. I am just starting, not a professional developer, right from the beginning I felt bad even though I write and understand computer programs well. (The developed code contains a lot of technical stuff like Generics and no documentation about the code is available.) Has anyone experienced the same situation before? Please tell who is the right person to do the job.

• Which version of Ubuntu is recommended for app developers?

  I've searched around Ask Ubuntu and the App Developer site, but I can't seem to find the answers to my questions. I'm wanting to get back into programming, and I'd eventually like get into app development for Ubuntu, but I'm not sure where to get started. Which version of Ubuntu is currently recommended for app development, especially for those wanting to publish their apps to the Software Centre? Should app developers use the current LTS release, or, can any of the new releases be used? Should developers use the 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Ubuntu, or does this not matter?   I am looking for some resources on the JVM bytecode. Ideally I would for a short book; something more than a blog post but not a 800 pages tome. If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

• Methodology for Documenting Existing Code Base

  I work as part of a team on an existing application that has no inline documentation, nor does it have technical documentation. As I've been working on various bug reports on the application, I've written a sort of breadcrumb trail for myself - bug numbers in various places so that the next developer can refer to that bug number to see what was going on. My question is thus: What is the most effecient method for documenting this code? Should I document as I touch the area (the virus method, if you will), or should I document from each section on its own, and not follow paths that branch out into other areas of the application? Should I insert inline comments where none previously existed (with the fear that I may end up incorrectly identifying what the code does)? What method would you use to accurately and quickly document a rather large application that has no existing inline documentation, nor inline references to external documentation?

• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! Background: Broadening my last question, there is a request for tender for a software system that's open and I have decided to take it on. I am a software developer & engineer by profession and, in this tender process, I have to put on the pricing for my bid. I have been provided a documentation consisting of functional and non-functional requirements only. I have to put a project manager's cap on and think of all aspects, e.g. cost for implementation for the project, resources needed, etc. My question is: Is there a project framework that I can follow that breaks the project cycle into steps and corresponding cost aspect or how would I go about best calculating/approximating the cost for the project?

I'm first class with distinction in graduation and in post graduation is first class.Companies are coming for campus recruitment.I have very less companies like 4 or 5 who don't impose any criteria. there is a company who work on PHP and i have cleared its aptitude test and technical only HR remaining. I'm actually interested in Java and have knowledge about it but company work on PHP.I was fretting about If i work on PHP for 6 or 1 year can I change later to Java ? because i will also have experience of 6 or 12 months ? Will be considered an experienced employee if I apply for java developer later ? Will manager think that I worked in PHP and not allowed for Java ? • Developing Salesforce apps in Ruby on Rails

  I want to build a web app that uses Salesforce.com data, and I want to build it fast. I'm a .NET developer (WPF, C#, ASP.NET MVC). I understand Ruby and RoR fairly well, but I haven't delivered any Rails apps. I'm wondering, is Ruby on Rails a suitable tool for rapidly building Salesforce apps, or is it better for the "traditional" web2.0 stuff like Groupon and Twitter? In other words, would using RoR help me achieve my fast (e.g., three months) goal over using .NET, which I already know?

• What tool do you use to organise your tasks?

  Hi, I've been a web developer for four years now and I've yet to come across a nice piece of software that allows me to manage my day to day tasks well. In theory, I should be able to just pull up a textfile and write: write test scripts check code into svn remember to go home But obviously this isnt very usable. I've tried stuff like Ta-da List but it feels quite limited. JIRA is great for bug tracking but what if I have to remember to go to the bank at 2pm. Is there anything piece of software out there that helps organise programmers? I'm really interested in hearing what you guys have to say on this one. Thanks.

  I'm having a discussion with a fellow developer, and I'm trying to argument this in something like a short "term". SoC (Separation of Concerns) is pretty straight forward design practice, but it dwells deeper. If we want to pick on it's deep corners, we can Google it and there are plenty of articles that pop up, and after taking a glimpse, we know a lot more, and might find some examples. But, what about "Use procedures that execute a single task"? That's also a great design principle to use when writing applications and it becomes more and more rewarding, the larger the application gets. Is there a term for Use procedures that execute a single task?
