  • What is the most suitable way to manage iSCSI storage for Virtual Environments?

    We are planning to place a HP MSA P2000 with two FC/iSCSI controllers in our network. We have two options to provide more storage to Virtual Machines (We are running Hyper-V): A) Add iSCSI targets to the Virtual Hosts and then create VHD that we would add to each guest server. B) Directly add iSCSI targets in each guest server. Just wondering if one of those options is better than the other, and which is the common practice in a virtualized environment.   • GF 3.0.1 + Virtual Server: www.myhost.com:8080/projectname-war => www.myhost.com. How?

    I need to change www.myhost.com:8080/myproject-war to www.myhost.com. This is what I try. In admin console in Glassfish 3.0.1, I create a http-listener-3 with port 9090 and address 0.0.0.0 (I want to have port 80, but got access-denied or some sort). I then create a virtual server call scholar, with Id=scholar, Hosts=${com.sun.aas.hostName}, Network Listeners: http-listener-3, Default Web Module=project#project-war.war(it is the only option from the drop down list since I only deploy 1 app). Then under Applications, I set the virtual server of the application to be scholar. Save and restart. I try localhost:9090, and expecting that it will load my project like as if I type localhost:9090/project-war. But it does not. I already set the Default Web Module, to be the project, why doesnt it load the project by default?

    I need a cluster filesystem for an iSCSI device. The problem is that the servers to which it is connected generate datafiles which must be read by every other servers. Except for the writing and deleting of such files, I do not need a full locking scheme like in OCFS2 or GFS2. So, can I use a distributed lock manager (DLM) on top of an ext3 filesystem or must I use only specialized filesystem ?

  • Does HyperV allow binding physical NIC on virtual machine with promiscues mode?

    I have HyperV on Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 installed with some Virtual Server running that I wanted to have ISA or NTOP to monitor traffic. I've added additional physical NIC to server and wanted to use this NIC as traffic monitor (I've enabled port mirroring on switch). I can see on physical machine that runs HyperV a lot of traffic coming to the NIC so port mirroring works fine. However in virtual machine even thou I've assigned that NIC to only this one and only server it sees 0 packets. In VWMare Workstation it worked without problem and I could see mirrored traffic on VM. Should this be possible or HyperV is crippled?

I need a site that uses port 80 but is like http://myserver/myvirtual instead of http://myserver which is what this one with the + does. how do I make a virtual directory with the tool like in IIS?     I am using ubuntu 11.04 virtual image with VMWare Player 4.0.2 build-591240. Because I found that the folder that holds the VMWare image goes to 8GB and want to shrink the size by using the utilities tool provided by the VMWare Image Player. However, I found that the button is disabled like this. Question How to enable the button so that I can use it to shrink the size of virtual image used by ubuntu? Question If I cannot enable the button, is there another way that I can shrink the size of used space? Thank you

  • why is drop box syncing so freakishly slowly in my linux virtual machine?

    i am setting up a linux virtual machine (windows 7 64 bit host, ubuntu 64 bit guest, using virtual box) and i just installed drop box and set it to sync. I've only got about 2Gb in there so i figured it should take just an afternoon, but it's going at about 0.5 kB/second and says it will take about 60 days. I usually get about 200 kB/second in the host OS, and downloading straight from the dropbox website through firefox in the ubuntu VM i get about that, but sync is really slow. any tips?

    On a Windows 7, the working set memory usage plus private memory does not add up to the total used memory in Task Manager and Windows 7 Resource Monitor. How do you find out where the used memory is coming from? The cached memory can't be part of it because sometimes the total cache is greater than the total in use. The commit memory plus the working set also doesn't add up to the total in use - but even that shouldn't be significant if it did, since commit is virtual.

    I have setup a virtual host which specifies a default file to load when the URL is called. The problem I have is that I need that default DirectoryIndex file to appear in the URL. So when I go to: www.mysite.co.uk, I want www.mysite.co.uk/app.php to appear in the URL. How can I achieve this using my virtual host configuration within my apache.conf file?     I am writing a program that will eventually be used on a computer with a physical parallel port and will need to set certain pins high or low in order to signal to an external device. However, the development laptop I am using does not have any physical parallel ports and is too low powered to run a virtual machine.     I have Apache set up to serve several Virtual Hosts, and I would like to see how much bandwidth each site uses. I can see how much the entire server uses, but I would like more detailed reports. Most of the things I have found out there are for limiting bandwidth to virtual hosts, but I don't want to do that; I just want to see which sites are using how much bandwidth. This isn't for billing purposes, just for information. Is there an apache module I should use? Or is there some other way to do this?

Archived configurations are read-only, but you can clone, export, and delete them. Sounds like what Capture to Workspace does.

  • After moving our Servers to a virtual environment using VMware - SQL timeouts came in, why?

    We moved our servers to a virtual cloud (VMware) where only our servers are in. But as soon as we finished migrating everything we are fighting against SQL Timeouts and machine slowdowns we can't explain. Even though we ~ doubled the servers capacity while switching from physical to virtual. Now I googled and found that we are not alone. People are complaining about poor performance after moving to a cloud managed by VMware. Are there any known issues? Sometimes our services can't access a disk or SQL receives a timeout and we have no idea why.

    Hello, I'd like to know what performance impact I could expect running Linux in a virtual machine in Windows. The job I need Linux for is heavy and almost non-stop code compilation with GCC. Dual-boot doesn't look like a very attractive solution, so I'm counting on low VM overhead right now (10-20% would be fine for me, but 50% or more will be unacceptable). Did anyone try to measure the performance difference, are there any comparison tables? What virtual machine with the lowest overhead possible will you suggest? My host OS is Win7 and I've got a modern Core i7 with VT-x present. Thanks!

    hi guys, I have an ASP.NET 3.5 application using Windows Authentication and implementing our own RoleProvider. Problem is we want to restrict access to a set of pages to a few thousand users and rathern than inputing all of those one by one we found out they belong to an AD group. The answer is simple if the common group we are checking membership against the particular user is a direct member of it but the problem I'm having is that if the group is a member of another group and then subsequently member of another group then my code always returns false. For example: Say we want to check whether User is a member of group E, but User is not a direct member of *E", she is a member of "A" which a member of "B" which indeed is a member of E, therefore User is a member of *E" One of the solutions we have is very slow, although it gives the correct answer using (var context = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain)) { using (var group = GroupPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, IdentityType.Name, "DL-COOL-USERS")) { var users = group.GetMembers(true); // recursively enumerate return users.Any(a => a.Name == "userName"); } } The original solution and what I was trying to get to work, using .NET 3.5 System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement and it does work when users are direct members of the group in question is as follows: public bool IsUserInGroup(string userName, string groupName) { var cxt = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, "DOMAIN"); var user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(cxt, IdentityType.SamAccountName, userName); if (user == null) { return false; } var group = GroupPrincipal.FindByIdentity(cxt, groupName); if (group == null) { return false; } return user.IsMemberOf(group); } The bottom line is, we need to check for membership even though the groups are nested in many levels down.     Hi, In one of my projects, I have some classes that represent entities that cannot change once created, aka. immutable classes. Example : A class RSAKey that represent a RSA key which only has const methods. There is no point changing the existing instance: if you need another one, you just create one. My objects sometimes are heavy and I enforced the use of smart pointers to avoid copy. So far, I have the following pattern for my classes: class RSAKey : public boost::noncopyable, public boost::enable_shared_from_this<RSAKey> { public: /** * \brief Some factory. * \param member A member value. * \return An instance. */ static boost::shared_ptr<const RSAKey> createFromMember(int member); /** * \brief Get a member. * \return The member. */ int getMember() const; private: /** * \brief Constructor. * \param member A member. */ RSAKey(int member); /** * \brief Member. */ const int m_member; }; So you can only get a pointer (well, a smart pointer) to a const RSAKey. To me, it makes sense, because having a non-const reference to the instance is useless (it only has const methods). Do you guys see any issue regarding this pattern ? Are immutable classes something common in C++ or did I just created a monster ? Thank you for your advices !
