• Basic C question, concerning memory allocation and value assignment

  Hi there, I have recently started working on my master thesis in C that I haven't used in quite a long time. Being used to Java, I'm now facing all kinds of problems all the time. I hope someone can help me with the following one, since I've been struggling with it for the past two days. So I have a really basic model of a database: tables, tuples, attributes and I'm trying to load some data into this structure. Following are the definitions: typedef struct attribute { int type; char * name; void * value; } attribute; typedef struct tuple { int tuple_id; int attribute_count; attribute * attributes; } tuple; typedef struct table { char * name; int row_count; tuple * tuples; } table; Data is coming from a file with inserts (generated for the Wisconsin benchmark), which I'm parsing. I have only integer or string values. A sample row would look like: insert into table values (9205, 541, 1, 1, 5, 5, 5, 5, 0, 1, 9205, 10, 11, 'HHHHHHH', 'HHHHHHH', 'HHHHHHH'); I've "managed" to load and parse the data and also to assign it. However, the assignment bit is buggy, since all values point to the same memory location, i.e. all rows look identical after I've loaded the data. I've tried following things, none of which worked: memcpy(current_tuple->attributes[k].value, &v, sizeof(int)); This results in a bad access error. Same for the following code (since I'm not quite sure which one would be the correct usage): memcpy(current_tuple->attributes[k].value, &v, 1); Not even sure if memcpy is what I need here... Also I've tried allocating memory, by doing something like: current_tuple->attributes[k].value = (int *) malloc(sizeof(int)); only to get "malloc: * error for object 0x100108e98: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed." As far as I understand this error, memory has already been allocated for this object, but I don't see where this happened. Doesn't the malloc(sizeof(attribute)) only allocate the memory needed to store an integer and two pointers (i.e. not the memory those pointers point to)? Any help would be greatly appreciated! • How do I do a table join on two fields in my second table?

  I have two tables: Messages - Amongst other things, has a to_id and a from_id field. People - Has a corresponding person_id I am trying to figure out how to do the following in a single linq query: Give me all messages that have been sent to and from person x (idself). I had a couple of cracks at this. Not quite right MsgPeople = (from p in db.people join m in db.messages on p.person_id equals m.from_id where (m.from_id == idself || m.to_id == idself) orderby p.name descending select p).Distinct(); This almost works, except I think it misses one case: "people who have never received a message, just sent one to me" How this works in my head So what I really need is something like: join m in db.messages on (p.people_id equals m.from_id or p.people_id equals m.to_id) Gets me a subset of the people I am after It seems you can't do that. I have tried a few other options, like doing two joins: MsgPeople = (from p in db.people join m in AllMessages on p.person_id equals m.from_id join m2 in AllMessages on p.person_id equals m2.to_id where (m2.from_id == idself || m.to_id == idself) orderby p.name descending select p).Distinct(); but this gives me a subset of the results I need, I guess something to do with the order the joins are resolved. My understanding of LINQ (and perhaps even database theory) is embarrassingly superficial and I look forward to having some light shed on my problem.

• Querying using table-valued parameter

  I need help please with writing a sproc, it takes a table-valued parameter @Locations, whose Type is defined as follows: CREATE TYPE [dbo].[tvpLocation] AS TABLE( [CountryId] [int] NULL, [ResortName] [nvarchar](100) NULL, [Ordinal] [int] NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [Ordinal] ASC )WITH (IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF) ) @Locations will contain at least 1 row. Each row WILL have a non-null CountryId, and MAY have a non-null ResortName. Each row will have a unique Ordinal, the first being 0. The combinations of CountryId and ResortName in @Locations will be unique. The sproc needs to search against the following table structure. The image can be seen better by right-clicking it and View Image, or similar depending on your browser. Now this is where I'm stuck, the sproc should be able to find Tours where: The Tour's 1st TourHotel (Ordinal 0) has the same CountryId (and ResortName if specified) of the 1st row of @Locations (Ordinal 0). And also if @Locations has 1 row, the Tour must have additional TourHotels, ALL of which must be in the remaining CountryIds (and ResortNames if specified) of these remaining @Locations rows. Essentially, I want each call to the AsyncTask to run, eventually in an infinite while loop, and update the TextView fields as I have attempted in setValues. I have tried since yesterday after asking a question which led to this code, for reference. Oh yes, I did try using the AsyncTask get() method, but that didn't work either as I found out that it is actually a synchronous call, and renders the whole point of AsyncTask useless.

So, I am able to restrict the runs using the distinct TestCases but when I want the pass and fails, since I am using case I am unable to eliminate the duplicates. Is there any way to achieve what I want? any help please? thanks.

  Hi all, My situation is next: there are to entities with many-to-many relation, f.e. Products and Categories. Also, categories has hierachial structure, like a tree. There is need to select all products that depends to some concrete category with all its childs (branch). So, I use following sql statement to do that: SELECT * FROM Products p WHERE p.ID IN ( SELECT DISTINCT pc.ProductID FROM ProductsCategories pc INNER JOIN Categories c ON c.ID = pc.CategoryID WHERE c.TLeft >= 1 AND c.TRight <= 33378 ) But with big set of data this query executes very long and I found some solution to optimize it, look at here: DECLARE @CatProducts TABLE ( ProductID int NOT NULL ) INSERT INTO @CatProducts SELECT DISTINCT pc.ProductID FROM ProductsCategories pc INNER JOIN Categories c ON c.ID = pc.CategoryID WHERE c.TLeft >= 1 AND c.TRight <= 33378 SELECT * FROM Products p INNER JOIN @CatProducts cp ON cp.ProductID = p.ID This query executes very fast but I don't know how to do that with NHIbernate. Note, that I need use only ICriteria because of dynamic filtering\ordering. If some one knows a solution for that, it will be fantastic. But I'll pleasure to any suggestions of course. • cakephp find('list') - problem using

  I'm trying to get an array to poplulate a Counties select. If I use find('all') I can get the data but this array needs flattening to use in the view with $form-input($counties). If I use find('list') I can't seem to get the right array - which is simple array of county names. What I have tried is this: $ops=array( 'conditions' => array( 'display' => '!=0', 'TO_DAYS(event_finish) >= TO_DAYS(NOW())' ), 'fields' => 'DISTINCT venue_county', 'order' => 'venue_county DESC' ); $this->set('counties', $this->Event->find('list',$ops)); but the SQL this generates is: SELECT Event.id, DISTINCT Event.venue_county FROM events AS Event WHERE display = 1 AND TO_DAYS(event_finish) = TO_DAYS(NOW()) ORDER BY venue_county DESC which generates an error because it first inserts the Event.id field in the query - which is not wanted and causes the error. In my database I have a single table for Events which includes the venue address and I don't really want to create another table for address. What options should I be using efor the find('list') call?

• Which httpd.conf and php.ini files does plesk use

  If i disable the include_path in /etc/php.ini, i can still see that there is an include path loaded from somewhere. I want to know where this file is. If i use phpinfo(); on my domain i get that there is a include path /usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php, even though in the php.ini i used: ;inlucde_path=".:" In the section for aditional php.ini files this is the list: /etc/php.d/curl.ini, /etc/php.d/dbase.ini, /etc/php.d/dom.ini, /etc/php.d/gd.ini, /etc/php.d/imap.ini, /etc/php.d/json.ini, /etc/php.d/mbstring.ini, /etc/php.d/mysql.ini, /etc/php.d/mysqli.ini, /etc/php.d/pdo.ini, /etc/php.d/pdo_mysql.ini, /etc/php.d/pdo_sqlite.ini, /etc/php.d/wddx.ini, /etc/php.d/xmlreader.ini, /etc/php.d/xmlwriter.ini, /etc/php.d/xsl.ini, /etc/php.d/zip.ini I have checked all these files but i can nowhere find a reference to pear. This said the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file is questioning to me too. If i check this file i can see the following values are defined. • Is there a fix to display 0 when arithmetic underflow occurs on the Windows 7 calculator?

  I have a problem that exasperates me: When I take the Windows 7 calculator in standard mode, if I do 4, then v (square root), the result is 2 Fine. But, at this point, if I do - (minus), then 2, the result is -1,068281969439142e-19 instead of 0! OK, I know about ? (machine epsilon), and yes, -1,068281969439142e-19 is less than the 64 bits ? (1.11e-16), so, we have an arithmetic underflow, in other words in this case: 0. Great, my computer is able to represent subnormal numbers instead of just flush to zero when this happens, and it seems that it is an improvement! Subnormal values fill the underflow gap with values where the absolute distance between them are the same as for adjacent values just outside of the underflow gap. This is an improvement over the older practice to just have zero in the underflow gap, and where underflowing results were replaced by zero (flush to zero). BUT: this result is false! when you try to explain the concept of the square root to a child and you end up with this kind of result, it only complicates your task... what is the point to represent subnormal numbers in a standard, non scientific calculator? So, is there a way to fix this?

• Strange ASP.NET Queue Performance Counters Behavior?

  We have an ASP.NET 2.0 site running in classic mode. I am seeing very strange behavior in the performance counter values. Perhaps these are bugs (I've been all over Google trying to verify this, without much luck), or perhaps it is just my inexperience with monitoring these things. This PerfMon graph (http://imgur.com/Jv5io5J) represents a load test where I add up to 350 virtual users to the site, at a rate of about 1/sec, performing relatively simple page browsing. At the end of the test, I gradually taper off the number of users. This is a 4 CPU server. Machine.config settings for are at the defaults. The solid blue line is ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Executing for the application in question. The profile makes perfect sense, with a quick ramp-up to 32 executing requests (minWorkerThreads x 4CPUs), followed by a slower ramp-up to 48 ((maxWorkerThreads - minWorkerThreads) x 4CPUs). The solid yellow line is ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued. Again, this makes sense: after the initial 32 request threads are activated, the queue begins to build as new thread initialization can't keep pace with incoming requests. But as executing requests reaches its highest possible value of 48, the counter for ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Queued (green solid line) suddenly springs to life and maintains step with the yellow counter. As far as I can tell, and with no other apps running on the server, these two counters should have had the same values from the start. One other odd thing: The counter for ASP.NET v2.x\Request Wait Time (dotted yellow line) also does not spring to life until executing requests reaches 48. Shouldn't I be seeing values here from the moment ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued begins to build? And likewise, why would ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Request Execution Time (dotted blue) increase significantly only after that peak of 48 is reached? Shouldn't it ramp-up gradually along with queued requests?

I don't want to accuse someone of trying to break into an account without being sure that they were actually trying to break in. My question is this: is it almost definitely someone guessing a password, or could the 11 "failed to authenticate" messages be caused by something else?

• Parsing text files

  I encountered a situation tonight where I wanted to parse a text file. I had a very, very long word list that contained English words delimited by lines. I wanted to get rid of every word (or line) that was longer than 7 characters. This would be simple in Linux but I can't seem to find a simple solution in WindowsXP. I tried using Notepad++ regular expression search but that was a huge failure. I tried using the expression .{6,} without finding any matches. I'm really at a loss because I thought this sort of thing would be extremely easy and there would be tons of tools to accomplish a task like this. It seems like Notepad++ supports every other feature in the world except the very basic ones that seem the most obvious. Another one of my goals was to put some code before and after the word on each line. aardvark apple azolio would turn into INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('aardvark'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('apple'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('azolio'); What suggestions/tools/tips do you have to accomplish tasks similar to this in WindowsXP?

• Copy/paste filtered column in Excel - error message

  Firstly I should state that I don't believe in spreadsheets; my normal mode of operation is that data should either exist in a database or a text file... However - employment requires... In short, I have filtered a worksheet by column A, and I want to copy/paste from column B to column C. Obviously I don't wish to copy/paste values from rows that were filtered-out here. The above sounds ridiculously simple, right? First I tried simply copy/pasting on the filtered worksheet. This appeared to select and copy only the filtered data, however pasting appeared to insert values into hidden/filtered rows - as you might expect. So my initial research suggests I may wish to select the filtered data and press Alt+; (that is, ALT plus semicolon), which is a shortcut key for Goto Special Select Visible. Then just copy-paste. CTRL+C correctly copies the filtered data, however when I go to paste the values into another column, it pastes into hidden rows as well. Okay, so perhaps I should also "Select Visible" on the cells I wish to paste into as well? Nope - that gives me the error That command cannot be used on multiple selections. What am I doing wrong?!

Server Setup: 4 Tomcat Servers (version 7.0.22) that are load balanced (not clustered) by 2 Apache Servers. And the Apache servers themselves supply static content and routing to these 4 tomcat servers. Java Runtime Version: java version "1.6.0_30" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_30-b12) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.5-b03, mixed mode Memory Startup Parameters: MEMORY_OPTIONS="-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -Xss192k -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=500 -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled" Monitoring – Wily monitoring is available in all the production servers that monitors key server parameters and sends out configurable alert emails based on pre defined settings. Note: Each of the servers also has two other separate tomcat domains that run different applications Investigated area: There is no Heap Memory Leak and the GC is running fine without any issues over any period of time The current busy thread count corresponds directly to the application usage – weekends and nights have lesser no. of threads compared to business hours ThreadLocal uses a WeakReference internally. If the ThreadLocal is not strongly referenced, it will be garbage-collected, even though various threads have values stored via that ThreadLocal. Additionally, ThreadLocal values are actually stored in the Thread; if a thread dies, all of the values associated with that thread through a ThreadLocal are collected. If you have a ThreadLocal as a final class member, that's a strong reference, and it cannot be collected until the class is unloaded. But this is how any class member works, and isn't considered a memory leak. The cited problem only comes into play when the value stored in a ThreadLocal strongly references that ThreadLocal—sort of a circular reference. In this case, the value (a SimpleDateFormat), has no backwards reference to the ThreadLocal. There's no memory leak in this code. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of this and what to be monitored?

• PC power supply & normal range for voltages reported in BIOS hardware monitor?

  I'm trying to diagnose whether my computer has an ample power supply. Sometimes when I play a video-intensive game, both monitors lose the video signal, even though the computer remains on and sound playing. A theory I have is: the video card isn't getting sufficient power. I can't imagine it's overheating because the machine is well-ventilated and the video card isn't hot to touch when this happens. Anyway, in my PC's BIOS there's a Hardware Monitor page, and among other voltages reported (such as CPU, DRAM, South Bridge, etc.) I can see the following values: 3.3V 3.152V 5V 4.944V 12V 11.872V Are those the voltages used by peripherals? What voltage should I be referencing if I want to know what my video card (PCI Express) is consuming? What is the normal range of values reported for those? My values above appear to be under by approximately 4.5%, 1.1%, and 1.1% respectively. Is that cause for concern? How else should I be determining if my power supply is "right-sized" for my PC and video card, or am I perhaps barking up the wrong tree?

• Fixed width, free, sans serif fonts

  I'm a dyslexic and i generally use arial for most things, since its probably the most readable font for me. However i'd like to have a fixed width font with similar charecteristics (sans serif, distinct, 'simple' characters etc) since some things break with non fixed width fonts, but at the same time, most of the 'standard' fonts are harder to read for me- any suggestions?
