• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24. I'm a recent college graduate, and this would be my first "real" job out of school. • A question on choosing the next programming language between C/C++ and other languages

  I am a java developer (web app and standalone applications) who knows JavaScript, HTML, CSS and has mostly worked on Web applications. I have no knowledge of C/C++ or any other lower level languages. I feel like I should strengthen my CS basics by learning a fundamental language. Should it be C or C++? I am also inclined to learn Objective-C. Does it need basics of C or C++? Or should I go for new languages like Python, Google's Go etc. I know this is a cliche question asked very frequently, but I can use some help here.

• Does booting a live USB cause writes to occur to it?

  I know that Ubuntu will not and can not write to a live CD-R/DVD+-R when it is booting from it, as it is a read-only medium. However, the procedure (at least on the data level) for running Ubuntu off an optical disc is different from a USB drive, which is usually write-enabled. if I make a live USB, turn off persistent files, and boot from it, will any data be written to the USB drive (e.g. settings, error logs, temporary files)? Or will Ubuntu just read from it, nothing else?

• Constant noise in speakers and headphones

  On my laptop, Samsung 300V5A-S19 I have the constant noise from the speakers. If I wear headphones, the sound becomes more pronounced (at half volume it mutes the music). The noise level is independent of the volume control. The noise disappears only when volume is completely muted. For the record, the sound is reminiscent of the noise of the waves or something like that. System information: Ubuntu 12.10, kernel 3.5.0-18 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) All packages in the system updated. • Can't control connection bit rate using iwconfig with Atheros TL-WN821N (AR7010)

  I'm trying to reduce the connection bit rate on my Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 usb wifi adapter due to frequent instability issues (reported connection speed goes down to 1Mb/s and I have to physically reconnect the adapter to regain a connection). I know this is a common problem with this device, and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it, including using drivers from linux-backports; compiling and installing a custom firmware (following instructions on https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc#fw-free) and (as a last resort) using ndiswrapper. When using ndiswrapper, the wifi adapter is stable and operates in g mode at 54Mb/s (whilst when using the default ath9k_htc module, the adapter connects in n mode and the bit rate fluctuates constantly). Unfortunately, with this setup I have to run my processor using only one core, since using SMP with ndiswrapper causes a kernel oops on my system. So I want to lock my bit rate to 54Mb/s (or less, if need be) for connection stability, using the ath9k_htc module. I've tried 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M'; the command runs with no error but when I check the bit rate with 'sudo iwlist wlan0 bitrate' the command returns: wlan0 unknown bit-rate information. Current Bit Rate:78 Mb/s Any ideas? Here's some info (hopefully relevant) on my setup: Xubuntu (12.04.3) 64bit (kernel 3.2.0-55.85-generic) using Network Manager.   Why do we use to talk about addresses and memory of variable in C, where in other languages (like in Java, .Net etc) we do not talk about variable address and memory in a program, we will directly use the variables. But in C Language we are listening the word address and memory. How to explain this? I hope C is high level language designed over the assembly language. So C is a thin layer over assembly language (in assembly language we will use memory locations to store a variable and track a variable). But in other languages these addresses and memory related things are wrapped in that specific language, so that we will not listen these words.

  I am planning to set up a streaming server purely for internet radio using Icecast2. what software packages do i require during Ubuntu installation and any third party apps i may require. I am going to use BUTT(Broadcast using this tool) Encoder and would like to be able to run BUTT on any computer so that other people can broadcast to my server from anywhere. I am looking for tips or tutorials on how to achieve the above. I mainly need info on cofiguring Ubuntu Server and icecast2. Also GUI? if so what one. Preferablly lightweight. • Packaging an application written in C

  I have an application written in C. What I have is a bunch of c files and some .h files. Also, I created a Makefile to do compilation. How can I compile this into a deb package. I searched google, and put everything into a "name_0.1.orig.tar.gz" file and created a folder named "name-0.1", then inside that folder, "dh_make" Skipping creating ../name_0.1.orig.tar.gz because it already exists Currently there is no top level Makefile. This may require additional tuning. Done. Please edit the files in the debian/ subdirectory now. You should also check that the name Makefiles install into $DESTDIR and not in / . I have a Makefile in name.tar.gz, why it is not recognizing ?

• Adobe Air apps on the Mac App Store?

  Before you chastise me for asking this, I have an Adobe Air app that has a lot of investment in it, and if there is a way to utilize the existing code-base in any way, it is worth considering. I have heard news reports in passing about Adobe creating some kind of tool to allow flash or air apps to be ported to native objective-c code, but the information found in google is mostly commentary on the one-time Apple blockade. My question(s) is/are this: Is it even possible, at any level, to use an existing Air app to create a Mac Store app? If possible, what are the resources I can use to accomplish this?

Meaning one that would allow easy creation of multyple processes running in paralell inside one hoster app on one machine. In level not harder than needed for threads creation (so no seprate server apps - just one lib doing it all) Is there ny such lib and what can you propose for research topic?

• How do I install OSQA with limited access to the server?

  I would very much like to install OSQA on my host (provided/owned by my friend), but I can not make heads or tails of how I would go about doing it; a lot of the dependancies and such can't be installed with the current level of access (or most probably just knowledge) that I have. I can provide any further information required, and attempt to contact (friend) to see if he can do any of it for me, but I'm unsure as to how often I will be able to contact him. exec and shell_exec are not disabled on the server. If there are any other alternatives that I could use, please let me know! I tried Qwench but that was pretty buggy. I can usually deal with these kind of things, but this is my first foray into Python stuff!

• How can I perform a masked erase in SDL2?

  I'm trying to implement some shadow/lighting effects in my 2D-project, and I've concluded that if there is an easy way to perform a masked erase on an SDL_Texture, it would make the drawing operations quite cheap. Let's say I have a texture of the part of the level where light is not meant to be rendered. I also have a texture with my "light map"; I want to use this to just draw omni lights from my light sources. Then I want to use the first image to 'subtract' the portions of the light map that are not to be rendered on the final scene. Then I draw my "light map" texture on top of my scene, with additive blending enabled. This sounds like a good theory in my head, but I can't see any functions in the SDL2 API that let me do masked erase from a texture. Am I overlooking something? Does anything like this exist?

  Right-click within the Projects window in NetBeans IDE 7.2 and from the "View Java Packages As" menu, you can now choose "Reduced Tree".I never really understood the difference between "Reduced Tree" and the already existing "Tree". But it makes sense when you see it. Here's Reduced Tree view: And here's Tree view, where you can see that the "actions" and "nodes" packages above each have their own top level package nodes, which takes up more space than the above: What's cool is that your selected package view is persisted across restarts of the IDE. To be complete, here's the List view, which is the third option you have in the "View Java Packages As" menu: Seems to me like the new Reduced Tree view combines the best of the Tree view with the best of the List view! • Confused about my future. Doubt about .Net or Java way.

  I'm very confused about choosing the programming langage to follow in the next step of my life. I'm right now so familiar with C++, VB.NET and PHP, but to jump to a higher level I must choose between JEE(JSP, Servlets, JSF, Spring, EJB, Struts, Hibernate,...) and .NET(ASP.NET, C#). Because I cant learn them at the same time. And you realize that, when I mentioned JEE a lot of things comes to the head. In my personnal experience I prefere the .NET, but Java seems to be a better choice. believe me, i'm not writing a subjective topic. I just want to know what must I follow to get succes in my life. The question here is : Is there any things that can be done with Java, and cannot be done with .NET. Is there any chances that I can follow the uncounted number of frameworks that are always in developpement. ... (also something not said) ?

• Should a complete newbie use mongoose js? [on hold]

  I drank from the koolaid and jumped aboard the node.js bandwagon even though I barely know javascript. That said, I have the opportunity to work with one of 2 templates. One is just node, express and mongodb, and the second includes mongoose and jade with the other 3 and is easier for me to understand. Yet I'm concerned that if I begin with mongoose, I'll be too high level and miss some of the fundamentals. Is my concern warranted? Should I work my way up or should I just start playing with all the toys from day one?

• 1 year to learn as much as possile - How would you plan this time?

  I have been messing around with web development and programming in general for a couple of years now, working in web development agencies and the like. I have now decided that I want to move to more general programming and do this permanently and as a career and have set myself a goal of 1 year to learn as much as I can before I go out and find a 'proper' job as a programmer. Do any programmers out there have any opinions on how this time should be split and what the most important things to focus on will be over the year. The languages I will be focusing my learning on are: c, php, python and go - all of which i have varying degrees of familiarity with. The ultimate goal here is to gain as good as foundation as possible and to be of a good enough level to interview successfully for a decent company.

  I've been playing Zaz recently as a time waster and stress beater, but it seems not to be actively maintained, and is not saving profile data under Ubuntu 12.10. It's getting to be more stressful than fun, because it keeps crashing, and under Unity, Gnome Shell, KDE (in other words, any opengl enabled WM) it makes the GPU lockup. How can I make it save the profile data or create a profile that I can manually place my level info in? I'm tired of playing the same levels over and over and not being able to start from the ones I've already passed. I am still yet to find any info on fixing this. Any clues?
