• Windows Software to Save Arbitrary Application State

  VM software does a great job of saving state when you "turn it off," allowing instant and immediate return to that previous state. Is there some application for Windows that allows me to do the same thing, for any arbitrary software? It would allow me to save/restore state, possibly via a shell command or button that it appends to every window. Edit: For clarity, there are two types of apps: those that save their own states, and those that save others' states. Those that save their own state are like Chrome, which on load, reloads the windows you had open last time. That's not what I'm asking about; I'm asking for an app that can save the state of other apps, kind of like VM software does; but for any app. (A trivial test would be load notepad++, type a bunch of stuff, and save-state; on reset-state, you should be able to multi-level undo a lot of what you wrote, as if you never shut down the application.)

  Hello everybody! I want to transfer big files (1GB) over unreliable transport channels. When connection is interrupted, I don't want start file transfering from the begining. I can partially store it in a temp table and store last readed position, so when connection is reestablished I can request continue uploading of file from this position. Is there any best-practice for such kind of things. I'm currently use chunking channel. Thanks in advance.

• PDF - re/generate image using stream content

  I have pdf file with 8 content streams (bytes) which behave like image layers (but they are not layers that I can turn off/on in Adobe Reader). I would like to extract these images separately, because they overlap each other (thus I am not able to "Take a Snapshot" or "Copy File to Clipboard"). So now I have these streams in below format: <Start Stream> q 599.7601 0 0 71.99921 5951.03423 4282.48177 cm /Im0 Do Q q 599.7601 0 0 71.99921 5951.03432 4210.48177 cm /Im1 Do Q q 599.7601 0 0 71.99921 5951.03441 4138.48177 cm /Im2 Do [...] My question is: how to use these data to generate or regenerate these images to be able to save it as raster or vector file? I have already tried pstoedit, but it doesn't work properly beacuse of these multi streams. Same with PDFedit.

  I'd love for one of you smart and helpful folks to post a list of common causes of delays during an ssh login. Specifically, there are 2 spots where I see a range from instantaneous to multi-second delays. Between issuing the ssh command and getting a login prompt and between entering the passphrase and having the shell load Now, specifically I'm looking at ssh details only here. Obviously network latency, speed of the hardware and OSes involved, complex login scripts, etc can cause delays. For context I ssh to a vast multitude of linux distributions and some Solaris hosts using mostly Ubuntu, CentOS, and MacOS X as my client systems. Almost all of the time, the ssh server configuration is unchanged from the OS's default settings. What ssh server configurations should I be interested in? Are there OS/kernel parameters that can be tuned? Login shell tricks? Etc?

  I have an app that reads xml from a database using NHibernate Dal. The dal calls stored procedures to read and encapsulate the data from the schema into an xml message, wrap it up to a message and enqueue it on an internal queue for processing. I would to secure the channel from the database reads to the dequeue action. What would be the best way to do it.   I want to use Originate API of Asterisk to place an outbound call on a FXO channel, for testing purpose I am using X100P card and, as expected, card is not able to detect if the number is busy/ringing or when it is answered.   Is it at least possible to build Hadoop cluster from Raspberry Pi-based nodes? Can such a cluster meet hardware requirements of Hadoop? And if so, how much Raspberry Pi nodes are required to meet requirements? I understand that a cluster from several Raspberry Pi nodes being cheap is not powerful. My purpose is to organize cluster without possibility of loosing personal data from my desktop or notebook, and to use this cluster studying Hadoop. I'd appreciate if you suggest any better ideas of organizing a cheap Hadoop cluster for studying purposes. UPD: I've seen that recommended amount of memory for Hadoop is 16-24GB, multi-core processors, and 1TB of HDD, but it doesn't look like minimal requirements.

  My program needs to listen incoming socket connections (lets agree on port 8765), but it doesn't know which addresses it can bind on a particular machine. Of, course, it could simply to listen to all of them, but it need to send to the client program over a different(slower) channel the addresses which it should try in order to rich me on port 8765. So the flow is like this: My program lisens on all available interfaces on port 8765 Finds out a list of inet4 adresses by which it can be possibly reached (this step is the actual question) Posts that address on a whiteboard (blogpost or something) Interested clients try out all of them, to see using which one they can reach my program.   Hi, I am wanting to implement a multi-server specialised hosting environment. I currently have a cloud solution comprising of 3 centos boxes (2 lamp web servers, 1 mysql). What I am wanting to do is, implement a 5 server solution where they is 3 web servers, 1 mysql box and a fileshare. Basically I want the fileshare to host all the web files for the servers, the caching will remain on the individual servers and the sessions will be stored in mysql. • Is the console command cd a wildcard of sorts? [closed]

  I was wondering while developing some application (though this is not a development question) if the cd command used in Windows is a wildcard or cross-platform command of sorts. I looked up on table with comands for Unix/Linux and MAC OS X and it turns out that it seems to be there. • Uptime concerns in case of AWS outage

  I am running an Elastic Load Balancer backup by 2 instances in different Availability Zones in US East. I am using Multi-AZ RDS as well. Ideally this should ensure that if one AZ goes down, it should not effect the app because everything is spread across multiple AZs. But the recent AWS outage took the app down for a long time. I am not sure how this can happen. It would be great if someone can point out what went wrong. Major question here I have is how can I avoid this in future? I can setup app servers across different regions or even providers and use DNS for load balancing but what do I do with MySQL? Read Replicas will introduce some lag which I would want to avoid.

• Windows Recovery partition unusable after Ubuntu 12.04 install on Eee PC 1005P

  Installed Ubuntu 12.04 over the secondary (D:) partition with Grub2 handling multi-boot. Never accessed the 'Recovery' option in the boot menu until Windows7 Starter became unusable due to HDD failure (bad sectors on C:). Tried creating an USB recovery stick using the OEM's recovery application (F9) on hidden partition: all I got was a clean C:\ and an error telling me the recovery images cannot be found [R:\recovery\windowsre\ - or something very much like that] although everything is there (changed 'hidden' flag to check and copy contents). Nothing happens upon pressing F9, then Grub takes over giving the recovery option. The application starts but halts about 30s after initializing, very briefly displaying the error message above. I guess every time it goes through this it actually wipes C:\ but crashes immediately afterwards not being able to find what-ever .wim image files it needs. How to make it work?

  I am using an IBM ThinkPad T30 running Windows XP. It is connected to a TV system via S-Video output. Windows is currently set up in multi-monitor mode with monitor 2 being output to S-Video. However, since there is no preview monitor, I can't interact with anything I drag to monitor 2 as I can't see it. I would rather have the system set up so that there is only one monitor and the output is cloned to the laptop display and S-Video. This allows me to see what I'm doing on the TV system. Is this possible?

• Windows Remote Desktop with multiple monitors

  I'm looking for a remote desktop product that will allow me to switch on the fly between how many monitors the desktop is using. This would be going from one Windows 7 machine to another, one is running Ultimate, the other Enterprise. I know I can use Windows RDP with multi-monitor support, but it seems that only allows me to use ALL monitors, and if I switch to a windowed view, I get huge scrollbars because I'm going from 3 monitors to 1 window. What I'm looking for is something that will allow me to switch from 1, 2, or 3 monitor displays without restarting the RDP and would end up with a true 1/2/3 display - ie, if I go from 3 monitors to 1, or a window, I don't get scrollbars. Is there any such product?
