• Snow Leopard Permissions in Shared Folders reset on saving file

  I have several users who access their accounts on OSX through their windows machines over samba. As soon as they update/save a file, it sets the permissions to -rwxr----- which means no other users can read the files. This affects apache user, for example, so changes to their files under their Sites directory means Apache can no longer serve the pages. I've looked into /etc/smb.conf, /var/db/smb.conf, and /var/db/samba/smb.shares but I can't figure out how to force it to use the parent folders permissions. Thanks in advance.

• How to set up an SSL Cert with Subject Alternative Name

  To test a specific embedded client, I need to set up a web server serving a couple of SSL (HTTPS) sites, say "main.mysite.com" and "alternate.mysite.com". These should be handled by the same certificate, with a Subject Name of "main.mysite.com" and a Subject Alternative Name of "alternate.mysite.com". This certificate needs to be in an authority chain back to a 'proper' CA (such as GoDaddy, to keep the cost down). My question is, are there any good tutorials on how to do this, or can someone explain the process? What sort of parent certificate do I need to purchase from the CA provider? My understanding of SSL certificates is limited, but as Manuel said in Fawlty Towers, "I learn...". I'm happy to work in Windows (IIS) or Linux (Apache) (or even OSX, for that matter). • Disable Mailman Reminders

  We run a mailserver on OSX server, and a few mailing lists. The password/subscription reminds USED to come out at 8AM (local), but in the past months it's moved to 5AM, a nuisance to all involved. It would appear that mailman has been modified by Apple because there is no cronjob entry I can find that controls when these reminder notices come out, and I haven't found any launch agent/daemon plists that would control this ether. Nor have I found anything in the mailman configuration web pages. So... where are they?! Due to the specific-announcement style of use, they're a fairly worthless message to be originated, and they are a huge bother when announcing to support phones.

  Hey Guys, After installing vmware7, I tried to run a virtual machine with Mac OSX installed. When I tried to run this virtual machine I got an error message saying: Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization. I'v googled and found out that my processor (Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 Processor (2.93 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 Mhz FSB)supports Hardware virtualization. Does anyone know how to enable this in order to get this virtual machine running?

• How can I install an Apple Magic Trackpad on a PC without Boot Camp?

  I have a Apple Magic Trackpad and I'd like to use it with my PC. I have no other Apple hardware besides the Trackpad. I do not have OSX and thus no Boot Camp CD. The Trackpad uses Bluetooth and will pair with Windows 7 without specific drivers (appears as an HID-Compliant Mouse), but all it will do is point and left click (physical click, no touch tap). With Apple's Windows driver update, I should be able to achieve: Tap to click Dragging Drag lock Secondary click Two-finger scrolling Two-finger secondary tap/click But how can I obtain this driver without Boot Camp installed? Apple's Boot Camp update EXE will not install on my PC (non-Apple hardware).

Only to find out that vbox's virtual interface doesn't appear in the interfaces list on os x preferences. I know that on a linux host you could install something called bridge-utils and use that to bridge the two insterfaces. Is there any thing like that for Mac ?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.04 to my MacBook Pro (not the latest gen with i7, but one before that) on an external, USB harddrive (GRUB installed to the external as well). When I hold down the option key to try to select the external, it doesn't show up. After some looking around, my understanding is that it won't boot 'unsupported' operating system from an external drive. I have ran OSX from an external when I upgraded my harddrive. What can I do (or is it even possible) to allow my MacBook Pro to boot the Ubuntu drive?

• Terminal command to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer.

  I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right. • Running a command or script in terminal from anywhere by adding it to the PATH, what am I doing wrong?

  On osx/linux I want to be able to run a command/script on the terminal from anywhere which links to a program. ie I want to be able to run: alloy that runs: /usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin/alloy I'm guessing adding to .bashrc is the best way? I've tried running: export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin" and also: export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/share/npm/lib/node_modules/alloy/bin/alloy" Then I started a new terminal window but the alloy command doesnt work. Am I missing something?

• Compiling LaTeX document makes Google Drive crash

  I've the issue that when I compile a LaTeX document that is located inside my Google Drive this will after a few turns make the OSX Google Drive application crash. As this is an important document I want to keep it all the time inside the Google Drive location to ensure cloud backup but this ofcourse is not guaranteed if this makes my Google Drive crash all the time. I don't seem te be able to identify what is causing this and I was hoping that maybe some people here have any idea what might cause this? We're talking about a 8 pages document with 3 images, so nothing crazy big or complex.

  Possible Duplicate: Why does hardware get slower with time? You probably know this: A newly bought computer is snappy and responsive and just really fast. Then you use it for a couple of months and slowly but steadily the computer gets slower. Opening programs now takes a long time, accessing files takes longer, everything just takes longer than it used to. If you wipe your hard drive and reinstall, everything is back to its original snappyness, but will deteriorate again. This always happend with any operating system I used. Worst of all Windows XP, but also with Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Linux, OSX 10.5/10.6, Windows Vista... (haven't used Win 7 long enough to confirm this) Do you know the reason for this? Or even, a cure?

  As I understood EAP-TTLS and PEAP share same level of security when implemented in wireless networks. Both only provide server side authentication via certificate. The drawback of EAP-TTLS can be non native support in Microsoft Windows so every user has to install additional software. The benefit of EAP-TTLS can be support for less secure authentication mechanisms (PAP, CHAP, MS-CHAP) but why would you need them in modern and properly secure wireless system? What are you opinions? Why should I implement EAP-TTLS instead of PEAP? Let's say that I have most Windows users, medium Linux users and least iOS, OSX users.

  I have to concatenate a number of files in a directory structure which contains spaces in the folder names looking like this: ./CH 0000100014/A10/11XT/11xt#001.csv find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 cat > allmycsv.txt does the job, however now I need to include the information contained in the path, i.e. CH 0000100014/A10/11XT as a header of each inputfile to cat. find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -I % sh -c 'echo %; cat %' >allmycsv.txt would do the job, if I had no spaces in the path, but in my case, cat does not get along with the space in the path name.   I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition. I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it. Any ideas how to proceed from here? Thanks.

  I have a linux box running Debian server with minimal number of packages (so no GUI for network management). The box has two ethernet cards, one of which (eth0) is connected to a Mac OSX computer using a cross-cable. I can bring up eth0 and assign a static ip (10.10.11.16) to it. This way I can ssh to the box through the cross-cable. This is what I run on Linux box: ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I also installed/started a file server (AFS) on Debian. So far, the file server can only be accessed through eth1 which is exposed to my home LAN and www. My goal is to set up the file server so that it's only visible through eth0. Is this possible? and if yes, how can I do it?

• Xdebug 2.0.5 with Zend Server CE PHP5.2.12 possible?

  I'm using Zend Server CE with PHP 5.2.12 on OSX Snow Leopard and want to use Xdebug. I've turned off Zend Data Cache, Zend Optimizer+, and Zend Debugger in the console. When I run $ cd ~/Downloads/xdebug-2.0.5 $ /usr/local/zend/bin/phpize I get Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20041225 Zend Module Api No: 20060613 Zend Extension Api No: 220060519 The PHP API Version, 20041225, seems to be off from the documentation (aka wrong). When I continue installation with $ ./configure ---with-php-config=/usr/local/zend/bin/php-config $ make $ sudo make install The installed xdebug.so seems to be the wrong one. Which version of xdebug do I need for this PHP API version? The Zend API numbers are ok. I'm just confused at why the PHP API Version doesn't match. • Preferred OS for hosting Tomcat servlet container

  I know that I'm taking a risk, pitting the differing OS religions against each other, but I would like professional opinions about hosting a servlet container. In my case the container is set, we will be using Tomcat. But what is in question is the hosting operating system. We have administrators experienced in Windows Server 2003. We have developers experienced in Solaris, OSX, and Linux. There is no warring between these groups, just a question of who will ramp up through the learning curve necessary to use the OS that they are unfamiliar with. • Is there an Alternative to TextMate's mate and rmate for Windows?

  As part of the upcoming TextMate 2 release, there will be a new feature called rmate, which will allow you to edit files from a remote machine (Linux/Unix/OSX) via SSH using your local copy of TextMate... Is there something similar for Windows? I know i could use CyberDuck, find the file i want to edit, download locally, work on it and then re-upload, but rmate looks like you just type rmate on the remote server, and text mate pops up with the file. (i have not tried since i am not a TextMate owner) Is there something similar for Windows?

  Hi, I use Macports on Mac OSX to install some software. But there are somethings that I find very strange. For instance, yesterday I installed some app. and the it needed to get gcc43 and compile completely from source! It took a lot of time, although now everything works right. I understand that compilation of everything in the gentoo spirit is eomthing nice, but in the Mac case, not necessary. There are ony sole hardware variations, so it will be easier to get the binaries. I wonder if Macporst can be forced to get the binaries when available and therefore avoid these time consuming compilations. Thanks

• wireshark not seeing all packets on WiFi

  I'm using Wireshark on OSX, trying to sniff my home network over WiFi. While I can see packets that are sent to/from the host I'm sniffing on, I'm not seeing anything else that goes over the WiFi. It's like I'm not in promiscuous mode or something (the promiscuous mode box is in fact checked). The router is an Apple Airport Extreme, protected by WPA2. I'm attached to the network I'm trying to sniff, so I'm confused about why I can't see other traffic. Edit: I solved this by the following: Plug Macbook directly into the Airport Extreme router Enable "internet sharing" on Macbook, with no password. Bind wireless device (the one I wanted to sniff) to the WiFi hotspot generated by Internet sharing in step 2. Run Wireshark on the Macbook, bound to device en1. Don't forget to disable sharing after you're done. :-)

• How can I port forward with an airport extreme and a NAT enabled modem?

  I run an Actiontec HD701D modem with NAT to an Airport extreme base station to laptop etc. As you might expect I get double NAT issues. I tried a lot of different things to forward a port, but no luck. Currently the airport is in bridge mode letting the modem handle the NAT, but still can't forward the port. Also to note: firewall is off on the router, firewall is set to allow the application in OSX 10.6.3 and I did forward the port in the router. No luck.

• How do you map a solo press of a modifier key to its own function or mapping on Windows?

  Today on hacker news there was a clever article on custom shortcut keys. The author talks about a technique for remapping a modifier key such as CTRL to ESC if CTRL were pressed without a modifier. This is useful in vim because of how often you need to press ESC. Another technique he describes is mapping the open parenthesis, ( to the left shift key, and ) to the right shift key. If another key is pressed when shift is held down, the shift key behaves normally. The author describes the software he uses on OSX, but is there a way to do this on Windows? I've heard of AutoHotKey but it seems to only fire macros when simple keys are pressed, rather than the conditional state switch that this would require.
