• What are safe keys to remap in vim?

  So far I've been trying to use Vim in as vanilla a configuration as possible, so as to save myself hassle when moving between machines. However, there are a few things I'd really like to bind keys, such as to shorten "_diwP which I use often to delete the word under the cursor and replace it with one from the clipboard. Are there any particular keys that are conventionally reserved for user-defined mappings? The point of this question is mostly that I would like to avoid hassle later on when I decide to install some plugin or take my configuration files to vim on another OS and find that my key mappings clash with something else.

• CCUserDefault, iOS/Android and game updates

  My game uses cocos2d-x and will be published on iOS platform first, later on Android. I save a lot of things with CCUserDefault (scores, which level was completed, number of coins taken, etc...). But now I have a big doubt. What will happen when the game will receive its first update? CCUserDefault uses an XML file stored somewhere in the app storage space. This file is created and retained until one uninstalls the app. I am wondering what happens when the app is updated. Will the old XML file be maintained? Because if not, how should I handle app updates (updates in the sense that 2, 3 or more new level packages will be added, but the informations about the old ones, like scores, which level was finished and which not, number of coins, etc., need absolutely not to be lost)?

WebCenter is basically the new Portal framework in the Oracle stack - and one key thing that portals do is work with content, allowing you to compose and publish content from files as well as save and store content. In this demo you'll see how using a set of taskflows provided by WebCenter you can add a file management, creation and viewing capabilities to a regular ADF application. To try this out you don't need any fancy content management system - we'll just use your file system for now. All you need is the WebCenter extension installed in JDeveloper, and then you can follow the demo on your own JDeveloper instance. You'll define a connection to your content repository you'll be able to add a bunch of pre-built WebCenter taskflows into your page. Everybody is just focused on today's tasks and getting things done, however this means sometimes things have to be done the quick way, and that causes problems... you know, same old, same old. I'm bumping into code with several smells such as: big functions pointless utility functions/methods (essentially just to save writing a word), overcomplicated algorithms, extremely big files that should be broken down into different files/classes (1,500+ lines), etc. What would be the best way of improving code without making other developers feel bad/wrong about any proposed improvements?

  I want to use KDE file dialogs (file open, file save) in Firefox in Kubuntu 12.04. This requires something like the ancient KGtk script, but for KDE 4.x and recent Firefox versions. Does such a thing exist? Note, I'm not asking about theming/looks. I'm asking about actually using KDE file dialogs instead of XUL or GTK dialog. And the preference ui.allow_platform_file_picker doesn't affect this. I have already tried setting it to true and false. Neither options results in using KDE dialogs. Thanks.

• Set a specific screen resolution with xrandr

  So I installed LUbuntu 11.04 on my VirtualBox. I couldn't find the 1366x768 resolution so I installed Guest Additions but it wasn't there. So I used this code to set the correct resolution: gtf 1366 768 60 xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 $ xrandr --addmode VBOX0 1368x768_60.00 xrandr --output VBOX0 --mode 1368x768_60.00 The problem is that I can't find a way to save this information for the next reboot. I tried on .xinitrc and nothing happens. Then I tried on .bashrc but it's not working, I need to start a console before this commands are executed.

• No app icons in menus

  I have enabled icons in menus, and most of them show up well (folder icons, file icons, save icons, etc.). But whenever an app tries to use an icon specific to itself, such as GIMP, it replaces that icon with the app icon, so that when I look at a menu in GIMP, I see most of the time just icons of GIMP's logo (that seems to be the only problem; the text is fine). I thought this was proper to GIMP, but I also noticed it happening on AbiWord. Thankfully, as I said, it's not for all icons. But it still bugs me. Why is it so? Here is a screenshot of a menu in GIMP: I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, with Unity desktop (the problem also occurs on the Classic desktop, if I remember correctly). EDIT: This does NOT occur on the Classic desktop; only in Unity.

• Setup CRON weekly backup

  I want to make a backup of my /var/lib/mysql and /var/www folders and save them as tar.gz files to my mounted network file server (uslons001). My cron job looks like this. 30 7 * * fri /etc/cron.weekly/mysqlbackup.sh Which should execute at 7:30AM every Friday... What am I doing wrong? UPDATE1 - change the cron job line to the following: 44 8 * * 5 /etc/cron.weekly/mysqlbackup.sh with still no luck...is there a cron error log file that I can read to help pin point where the problem is?

  The brightness of my laptop is reset to Max on every restart. Is there any method I could follow to set the brightness to a fixed value on everyboot and vary it as and when I need it using the Brightness Control Keys.

• SOA Suite 11g: Unable to start domain (Error occurred during initialization of VM)

  If you have recently installed SOA Suite, created a domain and then tried to start it only to find it fails with the error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. the solution is to edit the file <domain home>\bin\setSOADomainEnv.cmd/sh (depending on your platform) and modify the line: set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m -Xmx1024m to something like: set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m -Xmx768m Save the file and then try to start your domain again. • Can I test my affiliate ID on a dummy webpage without it being suspended?

  I've recently applied for an Amazon affiliate program (which was accepted) as I'm planning on advertising books I read, on my website. Before going live with my website, I would like to: 1 -test the whole affiliate program to make sure it's working properly. 2 -buy the books I will review and promote on my website under my own affiliate program in order to get some cash back and therefore save money. To do so, I thought about setting up a simple HTML page (on the actual domain I applied for) which will just list the products I will buy before going live. That way I test, get some cash back, and don't expose my website (Brand, content...) before going live. Can I do this without having my account suspended by Amazon (i.e. won't Amazon think I only applied to the program to get some cash back, will Amazon be happy with receiving affiliate traffic from an almost empty website...) ?

• Passing Parameters Between Web-Services and JSF Pages

  This is another quick demo that shows a common scenario that combines several demos I did in the past. The scenario – we have two web services, one returns a list of objects, the other allows us to update an object. We want to build a page flow where the first page shows us the list of objects, allows us to select one, and then we can edit that instance in the next page and call the second web service to update our data source. The demo shows: How to select a row and save the object value in a pageFlowScope. (using setPropertyListener). • Hard Disk Spins Down as long as Battery is in Laptop

  Hi, I just figured out today that as long as the battery is in my laptop, it doesn't matter if it's fully charged while plugged in, Ubuntu always spins down my hard drive. I noticed this because there was a huge difference in speed when I removed the batteries. My settings for power management is basically: on AC power, don't spin down harddrive, dont suspend or anything on battery power, basically save as much power as possible I assumed that if I plug in my laptop, it'll use the On AC Power settings no matter what but apparently, this isn't so. Is there a way to "fix" this?

• Saving an interface instance into a Bundle

  All I've have an interface that allows me to switch between different scenes in my Android game. When the home key is pressed, I am saving all of my states (score, sprite positions etc) into a Bundle. When re-launching, I am restoring all my states and all is OK - however, I can't figure out how to save my 'Scene', thus when I return, it always starts at the default screen which is the 'Main Menu'. How would I go about saving my 'Scene' (into a Bundle)? • Switching between levels, re-initialize existing structure or create new one?

  This is something I've been wondering for quite a while. When building games that exist out of multiple levels (platformers, shmups etc) what is the prefered method to switch between the levels? Let's say we have a level class that does the following: Load data for the level design (tiles), enemies, graphics etc. Setup all these elements in their appriopate locations and display them Start physics and game logic I'm stuck between the following 2 methods: 1: Throw away everything in the level class and make a new one, we have to load an entirely new level anyway! 2: pause the game logic and physics, unload all currents assets, then re-initialize those components with the level data for the new level. They both have their pros and cons. Method 1 is alot easier and seems to make sense since we have to redo everything anyway. But method 2 allows you to re-use exisiting elements which might save resources and allows for a smoother transfer to the new level.

• Multiple Vertex Buffers per Mesh

  I've run into the situation where the size of my mesh with all its vertices and indices, is larger than the (optimal) vertex buffer object upper limit (~8MB). I was wondering if I can sub-divide the mesh across multiple vertex buffers, and somehow retain validity of the indices. Ie a triangle with a indice at the first vertex, and an indice at the last (ie in seperate VBOs). All the while maintaining this within Vertex Array Objects. My thoughts are, save myself the hassle, and for meshes (messes :P) such as this, just use the necessary size ( 8MB); which is what I do at the moment. But ideally my buffer manager (wip) at the moment is using optimal sizes; I may just have to make a special case then... Any ideas? If necessary, a simple C++ code example is appreciated. Note: I have also cross-posted this on stackoverflow, as I was not sure as to which it would be more suitable (its partly a design question).

• Loading content (meshes, textures, sounds) in the background

  In my game, I am aiming for a continuous world, that is, a world where you can go anywhere without breaking the immersion through load times and "virtual seams". My world is broken up into regions, which are nodes in a graph. A region is considered adjacent to another if it can be travelled to or seen from that region. In order to keep this continuous, I want to preload the assets needed in the adjacent regions (such as world meshes, textures, and music) before they are actually used. As for actually loading the content, I use a manager that keeps at most one copy of each asset in memory at a time, accessible by its filename. When I try to access an asset, it loads it (if necessary) and then returns it. I can then unload any asset that is currently loaded to save memory. Clearly, I want to do this in the background so there are no hiccups. I assume I have to use threads in some way, but I'm not sure how.
