• .NET Framework Class Library Documentation

  Developing in .NET 3.5. Recently my well-worn link to the .NET Framework 3.5 Class Library documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229335.aspx) started taking me to the .NET 4.0 docs. This is a bit of a nuisance, because I'm not interested in .NET 4.0 (yet)--the project I'm working on is in 3.5. Previous versions of the .NET Class Library docs provided links to older versions; these don't appear to be present any more in 4.0 docs. And I can't seem to locate the 3.5 docs anywhere on MSDN. Does anyone know where these are located. Or (better) where I can download a static copy of the Class Library docs (something conveniently available with Java API javadocs) that Microsoft can't hide? • CommandManager "cannot resolve symbol"

  After adding "RelayCommand" class (that uses CommandManager class) into my Silverlight App I've got an error: The name 'CommandManager' does not exist in the current context This class is a member of System.Windows.Input namespace that is in PresentationCore.dll assembly. The problem is that I can't add this dll into my app... I am having a strange assumption: this class (CommmandManager) can't be used in the Silverlight. Am I right? How can I implement MVVM-pattern (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd419663.aspx)? Thanks.

• Compiled ASP.NET application can be viewed locally only

  I have a development website running on my local machine, I can access it locally by typing the address http://mycomputer.mynetwork.local/myapp/default.aspx however when anybody else tries to browse to it they get an error: Server Error in '/' Application. The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. I'm using IIS7, ASP.NET 3.5 and the application is pre-compiled. Any hints?

• ASP.NET request extension type

  Hello, I am working on a large web application which I have recently shelved tons of .aspx pages from the project. To avoid page not found error, I added these entities in the xml which came around 300+ in count. I wrote a http module that checks the request url in the xml entities and if they are found, my module is going to redirect the request to respective new pages. Everything works great, but my collection is getting iterated for all the requests, I mean for each and every .jpg, .css, .js, .ico, .pdf etc. Is there any object or property in .net that can tell the type of request that user requested for like HttpContext.request.type. So that I can avoid checking the request for all unwanted file types.

• vb.net session variable passing "space" from one page to another

  i have 2 aspx webpages with vb.net code. On the first page, I have a text box, on first page that says "Enter Hobby", but its not a required textbox. So if the user clicks submit, it'll load up the second page. Now in the second page i have textbox "hobby" which has maxlength = 10. and in the vb.net code i have hobby.text = session("hobby"). if the user doesnt fill up hobby in first page, the session comes with 10 "spaces" since maxlength is 10. I tried hobby.text = TRIM(session("hobby"), but nothing happens. Any idea how i can lose the spaces if nothing is inputted?

  How can I best create a webservice method which returns JSON data that is to be consumed by an application on a different domain? The following article talks about how to set it up: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webservices/ASPNET_JSONP.aspx I havent tried it out yet but it seems like there are a lot of steps and the ajax client has to do some extra work. My question, is there a better way to do this? Also, I dont know too much about WCF services. Would I still have to go through a lot of work to enable JSONP? Thanks in advance.

• Don't Change URL in Browser When Clicking <asp:LinkButton>

  I have an ASP.NET page that uses a menu based on asp:LinkButton control in a Master page. When a user selects a menu item, an onclick handler calls a method in my C# code. The method it calls just does a Server.Transfer() to a new page. From what I have read, this is not supposed to change the URL displayed in the browser. The problem is it that the URL changes in the browser as the user navigates the menu to different pages. Here is an item in the menu: <asp:LinkButton id="foo" runat="server" onclick="changeToHelp"><span>Help</span> </asp:LinkButton> In my C# code, I handle the event with a method like: protected void changeToHelp(object sender, EventArgs e) { Server.Transfer("Help.aspx"); } Any ideas how I can navigate through the menu without the browser's URL bar changing?

On my local machine works fine, but on testing environment (when I deploy the application with aspnet_compiler) the application could not found Login.aspx view. So the question is how to deploy such applications? There is a directive from aspnet_compiler to tell the compiler that there are some embedded resources? Thanks

  I am very new to Fluent NHibernate and I have a problem that I cant find the answer to. I have a string column in my database table, containing a mathematical expression i.e: "10 + 15 * 5". On my entity I have a property that I call Formula and this returns a class that contains the mathematical "formula" (not as a string). I beleive this post http://intellect.dk/post/Implementing-custom-types-in-nHibernate.aspx explains how to solve it for NHibernate. But I am not sure... How do I get this working with Fluent NHibernate?

• Drop Down Box (select) set URL on postback?

  I have a page with a ASP.NET DropDownBox control (HTML select) that's populated with some dynamic record values. When the user selects a record the entire contents of the page is updated to reflect the selection. If a user clicks a link and leaves the page and tries to go back, it pulls up the default unselected list, and they have to reselect it again. How would be the best way to retain their selection? I currently have the page set so if the url contains PageName.aspx?recordID=5 it will select the correct dropDown option. However I'm not sure how to change the URL's query string based on the selection.

  I am reading data from an html file to load into a div. The problem I am having is, the program that writes the html files is converting to <br /> SO when I execute $('#items').load('/News/list.aspx'); it displays as a string on my page instead of reading it as a page break. I have tried to read the above file into a variable to do a string replace on the <br /> but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

• What's the best way to handle web.config file versions in ASP.Net?

  I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)? It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.

• Why does this VBS scheduled task (to call a URL) not work in Windows Server 2008?

  This same script worked in older server OS environments, and even on my desktop; and allows me to kick off a nightly process on my website's URL. It simply will not execute the URL in my Windows Server 2008 environment. It does not generate any errors, claiming task completion I can pull the same URL up just fine in the server's web browser I have the script running with "highest privileges" I even tried to create a batch file which executes it, so I can explicitly "Run as Administrator" and it still will not execute the URL (but will not generate any errors either). • ReportViewr: Hyperlink to a local file doesn't work

  I need to add 2 type of links to existing report with c#. For exapmle: 1) http://www.google.co.il/ 2) file:///C:/index.html I added the links, but only the "http://" works. when I press the link of "file:///" nothing happens. • TFS Automated Builds to Code Packages

  I would like to hear the best practices or know how people perform the following task in TFS 2008. I am intending on using TFS for building and storing web applications projects. Sometimes these projects can contain 100's of files (*.cs, *.acsx etc) During the lifetime of the website, a small bug will get raised resulting in say a stylesheet change, and a change to default.aspx.cs for example. On checking in these changes to TFS, and automated build would be triggered (great!), however for deploying the changes to the target production machine, I only need to deploy for example: style.css default.asx MyWebApplications.dll So my question is, can MSBuild be customized to generate a "code pack" of only the files which require deploying to the production server based on the changeset which cause the re-build?

When you click the Update Cart button it just updates the cart page it's on, but when you click the Shop More button it links to Shop.aspx a different page, and the Checkout links to another page as well. I can't figure out how it is linking just from that code, anybody have any insights?

  Hey all, Im looking to Extract a SharePoint List (WSS 2.0) to a SQL(2005) Table using SQL Server Integrated Services. First off I am aware of the "adapter" that does this from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd365137.aspx however I'm just wondering for compatibility purposes if it can't just be done "out of the box". There are only a limited number of "Data Flow Sources" to select as alternatives and I am unsure if any of these would be able to work in a similar way either directly to SharePoint or via SharePoints web services (e.g. http://server_name/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx) From the list of these sources it looks like the best option would be the OLE DB connector, but not sure how it would do this. • When is it safe to do a Response.Redirect() without throwing an exception?

  I have an intermediary class extending System.Web.UI.Page for all of my pages that require authentication. The class mostly does custom authentication handling. When a user with insufficient access attempts to visit a page, I try to redirect the user back to the login page while preventing any further page events from being executed (ie. Page_load). The first solution that came to mind was the default implementation of Response.Redirect. Of course the downside to this is the possibility of ThreadAbortExceptions being thrown. • How to Retrieve Values of A Dynamically Created Control's Child Controls on PostBack?

  Given: I have a custom server control in the markup of an aspx page. This control creates child controls in its CreateChildControls() method (e.g. it retrieves content from a database and based on that content dynamically creates either a CheckBoxList or a RadioButtonList) Now I understand that I cannot access the dynamically created controls on postback unless I add them again on Page_Init or Page_PreInit (as per here). My question is, how do I add them again explicitly in Page_Init or Page_PreInit if they are just going to be added yet again when we get around to calling Render() on each of the custom server controls? I'm very certain this is not a unique problem, so there must be a best practice way of doing it...I just don't know what it is :/

• Adding a textblock to a custom wpf control (piepiece control from codeplex)

  Hi Stackoverflow! I'm currently building a Surface application where the main navigation is a circular menu. For each menu item I'm using a custom control that I found on codeproject.com: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/PieChartDataBinding.aspx (PiePiece control) The number of submenu items (which is also piepiece controls) comes from a database and thus dynamically loaded. What I can't figure out is how I add a textblock to this custom control to display the submenu item text. It needs to follow the PiePiece's RotationAngle property to line up correctly. Anyone got a hot-fix for this? I was thinking about adding another dependencyproperty to the piepiece custom control, but that way I can't set the font-family, size etc (can I?) Any input on this is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  We are developing an ASP.NET web application where some of the features that we will need to implement are quite standard: for example, a chat between users, a forum, etc. There are ASP.NET chats and forums components available. However, they all have a predetermined GUI and html markup that is almost impossible to change and very difficult to customize. And this is a very common situation for most controls like grids, etc.: you have very low control over the html markup that is being generated by the control. In our case, our web app will have its own web design created by a professional web designer in PhotoShop, and then it will but transformed into html markup that will then be transformed in aspx pages. We would ideally like to create the html markup for the forum and chat by ourselves, and use only the non-GUI part of the ASP.NET components. Is this approach feasible? Has anyone dealt with such approach in practice?

• Microsoft learning support for VS2010

  OK, I am a big fan of WPF, and while it is large area to fully understand, Microsoft has been great in posting loads of training video at http://windowsclient.net/learn/videos_wpf.aspx However with the release of 2010 it all seams to have gone very quiet. I expected a lot of the support to be updated for 2010 and I also expected a lot of new videos on the best way to use the new features in 2010. Currently I find myself working through videos based on 2008 (or even 2005) and trying to apply them to 2010. Don't get me wrong it not that I mind doing this, it just that I fear I may be learning methods which have better or different solutions in 2010. It is just me expecting too much of Microsoft, or have I missed out on a new website?
